Il 12 giugno dalle ore 19 alla Casa del Parco in Caffarella si terrà il primo appuntamento formativo organizzato da Tech Workers Coalition (TWC) Roma, sezione cittadina dell'organizzazione internazionale alt-labour che si propone di migliorare le condizioni delle lavoratrici e dei lavoratori del settore tecnologico.

Siamo programmatori, ingegneri, sistemisti, grafici, copywriter, analisti software. Insieme possiamo cambiare il modo in cui (non) funziona l'industria tecnologica. Abbiamo questioni importanti da affrontare come body rental e partite Iva, smart working e orari di lavoro, adeguamenti all'inflazione e gender pay gap, ruolo delle Rsu e Rsa, diritto alla disconnessione e reperibilità, rinnovi contrattuali nazionali (Ccnl) e aziendali, vertenze in corso, presidi e scioperi.

Lavoriamo tutti i giorni con la tecnologia, possiamo quindi anche utilizzarla per coordinarci e organizzarci. L'appuntamento di formazione sindacale sarà un'occasione per conoscerci, parlare dei problemi e acquisire competenze sui nostri diritti per migliorare la nostra condizione lavorativa.

Speaking to Al Jazeera from on board the Madleen, Yasemin Acar, says that four vessels approached the ship and that two remain nearby.

“We sounded the alarm because we saw exactly four vessels approaching us all at the same time, two of which had blue lights,” she said.
“We had many lights suddenly surrounding us, and the four vessels suddenly just stopped.”

The UN Special Rapporteur on the the Occupied Palestinian Territories has said “all looks calm and safe now,” after alarms earlier sounded on board the Madleen.
“I just spoke again with the Flotilla, [including] its [Communication] Room in Catania”, Albanese said in a post on X.
“All looks calm and safe now. Speedboats watching; but the flotilla continues its sailing.”
“It will be a long night. And as they say and we say, ‘we are together’.”

(22:58 GMT) Freedom Flotilla Coalition says surrounding boats have left

In an audio message on the coalition’s Telegram, activist Thiago Avila has said the boats that surrounded the Madleen have now left.
“This, unfortunately, has been a very unlikely false alarm. we have been surrounded by many lights all at once. And they were circling our boat, but in the end, they kept going their own way,” he said.
“Could be IOF (Israel occupation forces) vessels, but in this case they just left and we don’t know,” he added. “We’re not sure.”

(22:35 GMT) UN rights expert says Israeli speedboats surrounding Madleen

In a post on X, Francesca Albanese said that she is in contact with the Madleen crew as they are now surrounded by Israeli vessels.
“They have just been reached by the Israel speedboats – 5 vessels circling the flotilla,” Albanese said.
“The captain is instructing the team to stay calm and seated, with their passports and life jackets on.”
“I hear them speaking with Israeli soldiers as I type… telling they are carrying humanitarian aid and go in peace. For the time being they are just circled. I am with them, recording everything.”

(19:35 GMT) Israel planning to intercept Madleen tonight

The Israeli Haaretz newspaper has reported that Israel’s Navy is planning to intercept Madleen tonight, and will seek to do so as far from the coast of Gaza as possible.
The newspaper framed the plan to intercept the Madleen deep in international waters as meant to avoid having to take the vessel by force, saying it will give the crew ample time to turn around.
Madleen’s crew has said they remain resolute in breaking the Israeli blockade.
Meanwhile, a senior Israeli official told Israel’s Channel 12 that the vessel will be boarded by commandos if it does not turn around and will be taken to Ashdod port.

(16:50 GMT) Thiago Avila, a Brazilian activist on board the Madleen vessel, tells Al Jazeera the boat is currently about 185km (100 nautical miles) off the coast of Gaza.

“We are here to support Gaza and demand an end to the bombing and starvation,” Avila said. “Despite threats, we will continue our journey. The world must stand with us.”
He said drones are flying overhead and communication systems had been jammed.
“We know Israeli forces are prepared to confront us with weapons, but we are not afraid,” he said. “What we face is nothing compared to what Palestinians in Gaza endure.”

Left Party MP Cansin Köktürk was thrown out of a German parliament plenary chamber on Wednesday for wearing a t-shirt with the word "Palestine" printed on it, a move deemed a political statement by the parliamentary leadership.

Bundestag President Julia Klöckner intervened during the session, reminding MPs that political messages on clothing are not permitted in the chamber.

While the Bundestag does not have a detailed dress code, its rules require MPs and visitors to dress "in keeping with the prestige" of the institution. Enforcement of this standard is left to the discretion of the session chair.

You can register on an existing instance or install it on your own server. Then you can start editing on the topic of your choice, and connect to other Ibis instances for different topics. Federation ensures that articles get mirrored across many servers, and can be read even if the original instance goes down. With this version Ibis can finally federate with other Fediverse platforms such as Lemmy (example) and others. If you notice any federation problems please open an issue. Note that Mastodon currently ignores activities sent by Ibis for unknown reasons. See the article for more details how federation works.

There are many improvements to signup and account management. Admins can configure OAuth so that users can login with existing accounts from other platforms. Email is also supported now, with a config option email_required to enable email verification for new users. Notifications can also be sent by email if desired. And there is an account settings page to change password and email.

When creating a new article, users can choose which instance it should reside on. Admins can remove articles, making the config option article_approval obsolete. Various other parts of the api were also changed. Additionally the code was split into different crates for faster development. There have also been many bug fixes and minor improvements.

If you are interested what a federated wiki can do, join and give it a try. You can register on ibis.wiki, open.ibis.wiki or other instances. You can also install Ibis on your own server. It is very lightweight and can easily run on an existing server alongside other software. This release includes an additional installation method using Docker. The labour aristocracy provides the major vehicle for bourgeois ideological and political influence within the working class. For Lenin, "opportunism" in the labour movement is conditioned by the preponderance of two major economic factors, namely, either "vast colonial possessions or a monopolist position in world markets." These allow for ever-greater sections of the metropolitan working class to be granted super-wages so that it is not merely the haute bourgeoisie which subsists on profits. Thus, according to Lenin, it is not simply capitalists who benefit from imperialism:

The export of capital, one of the most essential economic bases of imperialism, still more completely isolates the rentiers from production and sets the seal of parasitism on the whole country that lives by exploiting the labour of several overseas countries and colonies.

For Lenin, superprofits derived from imperialism allow the globally predominant bourgeoisie to pay inflated wages to sections of the (international) proletariat, who thus derive a material stake in preserving the capitalist system:

In all the civilised, advanced countries the bourgeoisie rob---either by colonial oppression or by financially extracting "gain" from formally independent weak countries---they rob a population many times larger than that of "their own" country. This is the economic factor that enables the imperialist bourgeoisie to obtain super-profits, part of which is used to bribe the top section of the proletariat and convert it into a reformist, opportunist petty bourgeoisie that fears revolution.

There are several pressing reasons why the haute bourgeoisie in command of the heights of the global capitalist economy pays its domestic working class super-wages, even where it is not forced to by militant trade-union struggle within the metropolis.

Economically, the embourgeoisement of First World workers has provided oligopolies with the secure and thriving consumer markets necessary to capital's expanded reproduction.
Politically, the stability of pro-imperialist polities with a working-class majority is of paramount concern to cautious investors and their representatives in government.
Militarily, a pliant and/or quiescent workforce furnishes both the national chauvinist personnel required to enforce global hegemony and a secure base from which to launch the subjugation of Third World territories.
Finally, ideologically, the lifestyles and cultural mores enjoyed by most First World workers signifies to the Third World not what benefits imperialism brings, but what capitalist industrial development and parliamentary democracy alone can achieve.

In receiving a share of superprofits, a sometimes fraught alliance is forged between workers and capitalists in the advanced nations. As far back as 1919, the First Congress of the Communist International (COMINTERN) adopted a resolution, agreed on by all of the major leaders of the world Communist movement of the time, which read:

At the expense of the plundered colonial peoples capital corrupted its wage slaves, created a community of interest between the exploited and the exploiters as against the oppressed colonies---the yellow, black, and red colonial people---and chained the European and American working class to the imperialist "fatherland."

Advocates of imperialism understood very early on that imperialism would and could provide substantial and socially pacifying benefits to the working classes in imperialist countries. Cecil Rhodes, arch-racist mining magnate, industrialist and founder of the white-settler state of Rhodesia, famously understood British democracy as equaling imperialism plus social reform:

I was in the West End of London yesterday and attended a meeting of the unemployed. I listened to the wild speeches, which were just a cry for "bread!" "bread!" and on the way home I pondered over the scene and I became more than ever convinced of the importance of imperialism ... My cherished idea is a solution for the social problem, i.e., in order to save the inhabitants of the United Kingdom from a bloody civil war, we colonial statesmen must acquire new lands to settle the surplus population, to provide new markets for the goods produced in the factories and the mines. The Empire, as I have always said, is a bread and butter question. If you want to avoid civil war, you must become imperialists.

Has anyone explored a decentralized, federated alternative to Know Your Meme (KYM)?

Know Your Meme (KYM) is a long-established platform that documents and researches internet memes, viral videos, catchphrases, and more. It uses a hybrid model of community wiki-style contributions and professional editorial oversight, making it a rich historical archive of online culture. Originally part of Rocketboom in 2007, KYM was later acquired by Cheezburger Network (2011) and then Literally Media (2016). It's even recognized by the U.S. Library of Congress.

However, as comprehensive and useful as KYM is, it's still a centralized platform. That centralization limits control, transparency, and long-term resilience, especially when meme culture itself thrives in decentralized, community-driven spaces.

This got me thinking: has anyone ever considered a decentralized and federated alternative to KYM? Something built on the ActivityPub protocol (like Lemmy, Peertube, Mastodon, etc.), where communities could:

Why use `Room` and not `DataStore`?

I'm new to Android dev, and I recently added my first contribution to ThumbKey (the Key Modifications feature).

I noticed that ThumbKey saves user settings using a Room database rather than using DataStore, or its outdated equivalent SharedPreferences.

Why is that? What's the advantage?

You can use either, but I will never use anything but SQL-type databases for data storage. I've been burned too many times with alternative data storage methods that didn't think through all the problems sql devs have dealt with for decades.

I don't understand. Nearly every successful anti-colonial revolution in the 20th century was communist or Marxist influenced, Vietnam was no different. Vietnam was successful because their decades long struggle against french and US imperialism, guided by Marxist theory.

There's far too many of these to list, but lets take Vietnam and the DPRK as examples:

The US was not an anti-colonial country; it was a british settler garrison that broke away in order to conquer the continent unhindered by British treaties with native peoples. Westward genocidal expansion and the theft of land were the goals.

The actual anti-colonialists in the revolutionary war (the indigenous peoples), rightly sided with the British in that conflict. Unfortunately their loss resulted in the decimation and near-genocide of hundreds of tribes. Sun-yat-sen and Ho Chi Minh and other revolutionaries were rightly scared that their countries would suffer the same fate.

I was aware of the atrocities and agreement violations, but not that perspective that colonials wanted to get free from any agreements the British did with the natives... Is that a common knowledge in the academia, disputed or a minority one? It is not to discredit it at all the idea, just to genuinely know its status at university level?

I believe they have noted it, but they consider it more minor and less important than Marxist historians do.

Interestingly just like the british, the US itself went through various phases of disputes with its own settler frontier terrorists that it empowered, when it wanted to do the conquering in a more "orderly" manner (although the goal never changed). A lot of these are chronicled in Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz - an indigenous people's history of the US.

Meanwhile the success in question: The 3rd world communist countries have managed to more or less industrialize and build up wealth, but under (state) capitalist system with all the bells of whistles which are markets, commodity production, wage labor, etc. In other words, they used capitalism to build up wealth.

Don't get me wrong, I actually think they had some absolutely amazing policies for the workers like free housing and social benefits, and good on them for building themselves up. However, this has nothing to do with socialism (socialist mode of production in this case) or communism as it was achieved with, and is therefore a win for capitalism - the same system that drove colonialism and the system that had already built up wealth for 'non-socialist' feudal/agrarian countries in the 19-20th century.

China specifically can't be called state capitalist in the slightest, considering that the CPC stands above the political system, unlike capitalist dictatorships where capital rises above political power:

If a state (CPC controlled or otherwise) oversees an economy where wage labor, capital accumulation, commodity exchange persists, then it's still state capitalism.

Socialist states have a surplus, after all, they do need to use some of the value to defend themselves from imperialist aggression, and to direct it into social services, research / science, and capital accumulation just like any country. The point is, that this surplus is not controlled by private capital, but by political decision within the communist party, whose members are made up of the worker-peasant alliance.

They also could shop in stores that carried Western goods such as bananas, jeans, and Japanese electronics. The U.S. press never pointed out that ordinary East Germans had access to public pools and gyms and could buy jeans and electronics (though usually not of the imported variety). Nor was the “lavish” consumption enjoyed by East German leaders contrasted to the truly opulent life style enjoyed by the Western plutocracy.

Second, in communist countries, productive forces were not organized for capital gain and private enrichment; public ownership of the means of production supplanted private ownership. Individuals could not hire other people and accumulate great personal wealth from their labor. Again, compared to Western standards, differences in earnings and savings among the populace were generally modest. The income spread between highest and lowest earners in the Soviet Union was about five to one. In the United States, the spread in yearly income between the top multibillionaires and the working poor is more like 10,000 to 1.

Third, priority was placed on human services. Though life under communism left a lot to be desired and the services themselves were rarely the best, communist countries did guarantee their citizens some minimal standard of economic survival and security, including guaranteed education, employment, housing, and medical assistance.

Fourth, communist countries did not pursue the capital penetration of other countries. Lacking a profit motive as their motor force and therefore having no need to constantly find new investment opportunities, they did not expropriate the lands, labor, markets, and natural resources of weaker nations, that is, they did not practice economic imperialism. The Soviet Union conducted trade and aid relations on terms that generally were favorable to the Eastern European nations and Mongolia, Cuba, and India.

All of the above were organizing principles for every communist system to one degree or another. None of the above apply to free market countries like Honduras, Guatemala, Thailand, South Korea, Chile, Indonesia, Zaire, Germany, or the United States.

But a real socialism, it is argued, would be controlled by the workers themselves through direct participation instead of being run by Leninists, Stalinists, Castroites, or other ill-willed, power-hungry, bureaucratic, cabals of evil men who betray revolutions. Unfortunately, this “pure socialism” view is ahistorical and nonfalsifiable; it cannot be tested against the actualities of history. It compares an ideal against an imperfect reality, and the reality comes off a poor second. It imagines what socialism would be like in a world far better than this one, where no strong state structure or security force is required, where none of the value produced by workers needs to be expropriated to rebuild society and defend it from invasion and internal sabotage.

The pure socialists’ ideological anticipations remain untainted by existing practice. They do not explain how the manifold functions of a revolutionary society would be organized, how external attack and internal sabotage would be thwarted, how bureaucracy would be avoided, scarce resources allocated, policy differences settled, priorities set, and production and distribution conducted. Instead, they offer vague statements about how the workers themselves will directly own and control the means of production and will arrive at their own solutions through creative struggle. No surprise then that the pure socialists support every revolution except the ones that succeed.

The current McCarthyite tactic is to use "tankie" and "authoritarian" as the code-words for anyone who dares to oppose US / NATO hegemony and align themselves with the anti-colonial projects. Only the US-aligned countries are allowed to be "authentic marxists", and everyone else is labeled a tankie.

Liberals desperately need to read Losurdo - Liberalism, a counter-history.

Even the liberal equality before the law, (ie, the illegality for the rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges and beg for food) was denied to colonized peoples and peoples of colonial origin.

Every one of your liberal ideologues was extremely racist, and didn't think colonized peoples deserved any of the rights they proclaimed for the white community. John Locke, and the first 5 or so US presidents owned slaves. Tocqueville pushed for the decimation of civilians in Algeria at the hands of the french imperialists, and wrote a book on the US that ignored slavery, lynchings, and native eviction. There are too many more cases to cover.

There is absolutely a discussion to be had here.

Of course people should be allowed to have their own government setups and authorities. It would be wrong to assume that we in the west have it all figured out.

However there are still questions of fundamental human rights. In many places of the world a woman can legally be raped, it's the woman's responsibility to always have a male relative with them. If we were to ask women what they thought about it they would probably say that there is no problem with it, that's just how it works. These women have been so indoctrinated by it that they don't question it.

We could also use slavery in America as an example. Many slaves probably accepted the argument that they had a better living standard as slaves, or some other argument that made them accept the status quo. Should Europe just have accepted that that is the way life goes over there?

Where does the line go between fundamental human rights and respecting other ways of life go? Western fundamental rights such as equal rights, right to a trial, right to life, etc. are just that, western.

Lemmy Development Update April 2025

Starting now, we are changing the dev update to a monthly schedule. This is more predictable and gives us more time to write it.

Last month saw the release of Lemmy 0.19.11. It included a lot of changes backported from the development branch. This way improvements can already reach users while the main branch is still under heavy development in preparation for the 1.0 release.

There were numerous other contributions:

Leoseg added a new keyword filter.
SolninjaA added support for using separate subdomains for federation and web interface.
travis-jean@rblind.com made various accessibility improvements to the UI.
@xaegit@lemmynsfw.com added some NSFW-related fixes.
Nutomic and Flamingo-cant@feddit.uk fixed different federation bugs and got Peertube federation working again.
Nothing4You and Matc-pub also contributed different bug fixes, speedups, and picture fixes.
MrKaplan@lemmy.world helped with some release-related tasks, and backported some existing mainline bug-fixes.

On the 1.0 front Dessalines was busy with different rewrites of the database to improve pagination, adding read, liked, and hidden content endpoints, speeding up compilation time, and also getting lemmy-ui updated.

For Lemmy to have a future, it's been a long-term goal to ensure that donations can cover the two full-time devs' living expenses, and possibly add more developers to the co-op. Nutomic worked on various tasks to aid this, including:

A redesign of the donation page on join-lemmy.org.
A new donation dialog shown directly in the Lemmy web interface.
A call for donations which was widely shared and discussed.

Although the goal is not reached yet, it looks like a success as the amount of recurring donations was almost doubled within a few days. It also helped to clarify and resolve some of the reasons why people were unwilling to donate.

Lemmy needs more donations

An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and I work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Unfortunately the amount of donations has decreased to only 2000€ per month. This leaves only 1000€ per developer, which is not enough to pay my bills. With the current level of donations I will be forced to find another job, and drastically reduce my contributions to Lemmy. If you want more information before donating, consider the comparison with Reddit. It began as startup funded by rich investors. The site is managed by corporate executives who over time have become more and more disconnected from normal users. Their main goal is to make investors happy and to make a profit. This leads to user-hostile decisions like firing the employee responsible for AMAs, blocking third-party apps and more. As Reddit is a single website under a single authority, it means all users need to follow the same rules, including ridiculous ones like censoring the name "Luigi".
Lemmy represents a new type of social media which is the complete opposite of Reddit. It is split across many different websites, each with its own rules, and managed by normal people who actually care about the users. There is no company and no profit motive. Much of the work is carried out by volunteer admins, mods and posters, who contribute out of enthusiasm and not for money. For users this is great as there is no advertising nor tracking, and no chance of takeover by a billionaire. Additionally there are no builtin political or ideological restrictions. You can use the software for any purpose you like, add your own restrictions or scrutinize its inner workings. Lemmy truly belongs to everyone.
Dessalines and I work fulltime on Lemmy to keep up with all the feature requests, bug reports and development work. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. Previously I sometimes had to rely on my personal savings to keep developing Lemmy for you, but that can't go on forever. We partly rely on NLnet for funding, but they only pay for development of new features, and not for mandatory maintenance work. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached Dessalines and I can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. Ibis uses markdown, not wikitext because the former has better support in Rust. There are some tools for converting from wikitext to markdown for example this one. By the way ibis.wiki is specifically for articles related to open source projects, you can use open.ibis.wiki for other topics.

May I please have some book recommendations on Communist China? I am interested in learning about the origins of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). I would like to understand the events leading up to the formation of the PRC, the rise of the CCP, and the development of Communist China. I am particularly interested in learning about key figures such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, Liu Shaoqi, Deng Xiaoping, and Xi Jinping, as well as other prominent leaders.

For a longer history, I highly recommend CGTN's historic journey video series. It's a 20 or so part series (10 hours in all) that was created to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the CPC. It spans the entire history of modern China to the present day, and touches on all the lessons learned. It's very watchable and you'll go through all the important figures, periods, and struggles.

This one isn't history but is a must read: Roland Boer's socialism with chinese characteristics, a guide for foreigners.

An extremely advanced but thorough book (i'm about 70% done with it), is Jin Huiming's - Marxism and Socialism with Chinese characteristics.

I haven't read these yet, but Edgar Snow's red star over china, and anna louise strong's the rise of the chinese people's communes document different periods while they were happening, and have interviews with many of the leaders above.

Also good to read their source material, including the quotation of Mao Zedong, and Deng Xiaoping's selected works. These are both remarkably readable and insightful.

Why on earth would the PRC or any communist country "abolish production relations". History has shown that the most important task of any country that frees themselves from colonial oppression, is to build industry, and develop production to uplift their people out of poverty.

Ignoring this task and focusing on "abolishing the commodity form" is ultra-left/anarchist nonsense, trying to insert vague ideological statements instead of the objective material reality and tasks at hand. The PRC went through an entire historical period to learn from and reject this nonsense.

Lemmy needs more donations

An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and I work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Unfortunately the amount of donations has decreased to only 2000€ per month. This leaves only 1000€ per developer, which is not enough to pay my bills. With the current level of donations I will be forced to find another job, and drastically reduce my contributions to Lemmy. If you want more information before donating, consider the comparison with Reddit. It began as startup funded by rich investors. The site is managed by corporate executives who over time have become more and more disconnected from normal users. Their main goal is to make investors happy and to make a profit. This leads to user-hostile decisions like firing the employee responsible for AMAs, blocking third-party apps and more. As Reddit is a single website under a single authority, it means all users need to follow the same rules, including ridiculous ones like censoring the name "Luigi".

Lemmy represents a new type of social media which is the complete opposite of Reddit. It is split across many different websites, each with its own rules, and managed by normal people who actually care about the users. There is no company and no profit motive. Much of the work is carried out by volunteer admins, mods and posters, who contribute out of enthusiasm and not for money. For users this is great as there is no advertising nor tracking, and no chance of takeover by a billionaire. Additionally there are no builtin political or ideological restrictions. You can use the software for any purpose you like, add your own restrictions or scrutinize its inner workings. Lemmy truly belongs to everyone.

Dessalines and I work fulltime on Lemmy to keep up with all the feature requests, bug reports and development work. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. Previously I sometimes had to rely on my personal savings to keep developing Lemmy for you, but that can't go on forever. We partly rely on NLnet for funding, but they only pay for development of new features, and not for mandatory maintenance work. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. I love lemmy the project. But there has too much political arguments in some communities and they will hate you if you aren't 100% agree with them. Even the post and the group/community are not political, comments will turn it to political. I am kind of tired(although I know some ppl are thrilled with political arguments). There is not much the devs can do, but the content does affect the user experience quite a lot.

Nevertheless, thanks for all the hard work, nutomic and dessalines. I will donate.

Fully agree that theres too much politics. Like you say too often about attacking some kind of enemy rather trying to understand other perspectives. For better or for worse, those seem to be the types of people more likely to use a new platform like Lemmy. Hopefully in the future they will also get tired of this stuff.

Should Lemmy hide downvotes on your own posts by default?

There is a pull request which adds a new setting show_downvotes with these settings:
- Show (current behaviour)
- Hide (all downvotes hidden in ui)
- ShowForOthers (only downvotes on other user's posts are visible)

Importantly the last option would become the new default, which means that users wont be aware that their post or comment was downvoted unless they manually change the setting. This may be good for mental health, but may also make it harder for users to realize that their content is unpopular. What do you think about it?

Yes. As a hexbear user where down votes are disabled I find the experience is much more enjoyable. Ideally down votes off would be the default for servers.

This setting is only about how downvotes are displayed. They still exist and will be visible to other users, but not to the post creator. Disabling downvotes entirely as default is a separate discussion.

Based on the feedback here, I've changed the PR to have Show be the default, and its been merged.

ShowForOthers is still an option, just not the default.

I’m making an initial version of places.pub available today. places.pub is a collection of Place objects suitable for use in geosocial applications on the ActivityPub network.

One important need for geosocial software is that all objects in ActivityPub, including Place objects, need to have a permanent URL as their id property, which shares the description of that object in Activity Streams 2.0 format. However, there isn’t a good dataset of geographical objects — countries, states or provinces or regions, cities, buildings, businesses, parks, streets — available in AS2 on the Web right now. That is slowing down experimentation in the Geosocial Task Force.

Using the service

So, I worked on making places.pub for geosocial hackers to experiment with. It’s a service that exposes places from the amazing OpenStreetMap collection of data as AS2 objects on the Web. So, given an OpenStreetMap object like the Rogers Centre Ottawa, it provides an AS2 version suitable for use in geosocial activities in ActivityPub. It also has a rudimentary search mechanism, although I think most users will want to use the Nominatim service for searching the OpenStreetMap database, and then map the IDs onto places.pub.

Once you know the places.pub ID for a place, you can use it for geotagging objects, people, activities, or using special geosocial activity types like check in, check out, and travel. There is a good list of examples on the places.pub home page, but obviously this is not an exhaustive list!

How it is built

This wasn’t my first time trying to build places.pub; I’d done two earlier versions with different architectures and the same interface. The first time out, about 7 years ago, I created a full NodeJS server that used a full mirror of the OpenStreetMap database, so I didn’t need to hit the OSM API to fetch data. It worked pretty well, but it was really expensive — hundreds of dollars per month to keep a database server of that size running and synched.

I tried a second version a few months ago, which did batch generation of AS2 Place objects from the OpenStreetMap exports, and then uploaded them to the S3 service at Amazon Web Services. This was a whole lot cheaper, but it took a long time to download, convert, and re-upload the data.

This third implementation, with source code available on GitHub, is a little bit easier than both. Instead of sloshing the huge OSM dataset back and forth, I used the version of the data stored in the Google Cloud Public Datasets system on BigQuery. This let me ignore the effort of moving data, and just focus on giving it a good ActivityPub-compatible interface using a Google Cloud Run function. It seems to work pretty nicely.

Next steps

I’d love to see some experimentation with using places.pub for geosocial activity in the social web. I’m going to work on some implementations in my own ActivityPub software. If you find problems with the software, please add an issue on GitHub or let me know on the Fediverse at @evanprodromou.

This is an amazing initiative!! 🌍

The small problem with OpenStreetMap IDs is that they're not stable. This can happen for example:

- a node/way keeps its id but gets moved around, or

- a new node/way gets created with a new id but it really describes the same previously deleted object

There are various systems to come up with stable IDs all with their own pros and cons but no good one-fits-all solution.

Maybe fine for a prototype for now but we need to keep this in mind.

The promotion of anarchism within capitalist media, coupled with the suppression of Marxist thought, is damning evidence against anarchism as viable opposition to capitalist hegemony. In fact, the two happen to be perfectly compatible. Meanwhile, history demonstrates time and again that revolutions require centralized authority to dismantle oppressive systems. Capitalism tolerates anarchism precisely because it poses no systemic threat, while revolutionary movements succeed only by embracing disciplined, organized force.

Capitalist media platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime glorify anarchist individualism with shows like Money Heist and The Umbrella Academy while demonizing Marxist collectivism. The narratives in the media fetishize lone rebels "fighting the system" through symbolic acts such as heists or sabotage that never threaten the core machinery of the system. By contrast, media vilifies Marxist movements as "authoritarian" as seen in The Hunger Games' critique of collective resistance vs. glorification of individual heroism. Anarchism's rejection of centralized power also neatly aligns with neoliberalism's war on institutional solidarity. Capitalist elites amplify anarchism precisely because it atomizes dissent into spectacle, ensuring resistance remains fragmented and impotent. If anarchism actually threatened capital, it would be censored as fiercely as Marxism.

The reality of the situation is that every effective society of meaningful scale, be it capitalist or socialist, relies on centralized power. Capitalist states enforce property rights, monetary policy, and corporate monopolies through institutions like central banks, militaries, police, and courts. Amazon''s logistics empire, the Federal Reserve's control over currency, and NATO's geopolitical dominance all depend on rigid hierarchies. On the other hand, anarchists refuse to acknowledge that dismantling capitalism requires confronting its centralized power structures with equal organizational force.

What anarchists fail to acknowledge is that revolutions are authoritarian by their very nature. To overthrow a ruling class, the oppressed must organize into a cohesive force capable of seizing and wielding power. The Bolsheviks built a vanguard party to crush counterrevolutionaries and nationalize industry in order to dismantle the Tsarist regime. Mao's Red Army imposed discipline to expel bourgeoisie and landlords. Engels acknowledged this reality saying that a revolution is certainly the most authoritarian thing there is; it is the act whereby one part of the population imposes its will upon the other part by means of rifles, bayonets, and cannon.

Rejecting this authority ensures that a movement becomes irrelevant in the long run. The Spanish anarchists of 1936, despite initial successes, were crushed by fascists because they lacked centralized coordination. Modern "autonomous zones" such as CHAZ dissolve quickly, as they cannot defend against state violence or organize production.

Anarchism's fatal flaw is its lack of a cohesive vision. It splinters into countless factions such as eco-anarchists, insurrectionists, anprims, mutualists, and so on. Each one prioritizes disparate goals of degrowth, anti-work, anti-civ, etc., that are often at odds with one another. Movements like Occupy with their "leaderless" structure are effortlessly dispersed by the state. By contrast, capitalist states execute power with singular purpose of ensuring profit accumulation in the hands of the oligarchs. Marxist movements, too, succeed through unified strategy as articulated by Lenin in What Is to Be Done? where he prioritized a centralized party precisely to avoid anarchist-style disarray. The capitalist ruling class understands perfectly well that it is easier to crush a hundred squabbling collectives than a single disciplined force. Hence why anarchism becomes a sanctioned form of dissent that never coalesces into material threat.

Meanwhile, revolutions demand the use of authority as a tool for the oppressed to defeat capitalism. Serious movements must embrace the discipline capitalists fear most. The kind of discipline that builds states, expropriates billionaires, and silences reactionaries.

Excellent post. Its def striking that anarchism's "propaganda of the deed" non-solution to society's problems is becoming mainstream in a lot of modern media (v for vendetta is another example). Fidel has this to say:

Anarchists are more concerned with morality than actual concrete reality. They have the liberal mindset that the political and economic system is merely a reflection of the beliefs and ideas of that society and has no connection to the society's material conditions, and therefore to change a political or economic system, all that is necessary is changing people's ideas.

Because of this, they think building a utopia merely requires imagining that utopia in your head and convincing everyone else of it, and by extension, any country that has failed to achieve a utopia has only done so due to a moral failing on their part. They think the reason every single socialist experiment failed to achieve some imagined utopia is because of moral corruption, that the leadership was just evil and immoral.

They extend this idea not to just the leaders of those countries, but anyone who supports those countries. If you defend any actually-existing socialist country, they will assume you must only do so because you are morally inferior, they will accuse you of being an "evil tankie" and whatever other insult they can imagine to try and attack your character, rather than your arguments, because in their mind, they don't believe you believe what you believe due to good arguments. They believe you believe what you believe due to a moral failing.

Let's stop talking in generalities and take a look at a very concrete example: economics. Going back to Smith's LTV, we understand how capitalist economies are capable of, to some degree, balancing resources to convert the supply into the goods and services demanded, and how market pressures push companies into buying and selling roughly at cost of production. A planned economy can also balance resources because, in principle, they would have access to the information and computational power needed to directly calculate costs of production and allocate resources efficiently to achieve similar, and with sufficient infrastructure and technology, even better, results.

Many anarchists will propose some economic system outside of markets and economic planning, what they call the "gift economy". They don't propose this system because they arrived at it objectively through a rigorous analysis of the development of capitalism as Marxists arrive at their understanding, no, they propose it because it sounds morally good to them.

The problem is, a gift economy fundamentally has no way to balance resources. If I could take whatever I want without expectation of returning sufficient materials, you would inevitably have huge shortages in the economy.

Shortages are avoided in market systems by requiring direct recuperation of cost upon consumption (payment), while centrally planned systems may recuperate cost immediately, but since they are centrally planned, resources from one sector can be allocated towards another, i.e. health care could be provided free at the point of service but funded by another sector of the economy, and it would balance out, because planning is centralized and able to do such a thing.

A gift economy lacks both of these features. It has no planning capabilities nor any market capabilities to regulate consumption of resources. It's not that economic calculation can't be done, it's that in a gift economy, economic calculation never even takes place. Once you begin to introduce any sort of mechanism for economic calculation, you inevitably end up with either a market system or a planned economy. The only way economic calculation could be done away with entirely is if we had a post-scarcity society, i.e. the conditions to achieve full communism, which obviously doesn't exist.

Of course, this is just one example. Anarchists believe in many things and not all believe in gift economies, but it's an example of something many anarchists fundamentally believe in purely on moral grounds despite it being nonsense economically.

Anarchism is fundamentally based in decentralization which plenty of Marxists such as Friedrich Engels and Che Guevara already criticized this concept as nonsensical and pointed out how decentralized production is the basis for capitalism and will inevitably return to capitalism.

Anarchism is an incredibly self-contradictory ideology that fundamentally is based in morality without any concerns for concrete reality. It's concerned with trying to force reality to fit into an idealized utopia rather than deriving answers from concrete reality itself. Political and economic systems are not in our heads, they're in the real, material world, and they have to operate and maintain complex social relations and modes of production. You can't build a political and economic system based on morality any more than you can build a smartphone based on morality.

This is a continuation of this thread around Mastodon/Lemmy integration.

I am trying to understand the formatting rules around Mastodon to Mastodon/Lemmy posts. My Mastodon instance is www.mstdn.games.

I was able to get this point:

Let me walk through the key points.

1. Thumbnail

This works really well. You attach an image on Mastodon and it outputs the correct thumbnail on Lemmy (it even works across instances, I know there are issues with LW vs other instances in custom thumbnail attach).

2. Markdown Formatting

Doesn't seem to work on the Mastodon side. Not a big deal, the only somewhat relevant piece is the markdown URL syntax, but I can just use [Text - UR

Lemmy dev here. Making the same post to multiple communities is not possible, so you need to post multiple times tagging a different community each time. Links are taken from Activitypub attachment, but Mastodon only seems to support image attachments. So it is not possible to add other types of links unless Mastodon adds an option for that. Markdown would also have to be supported by Mastodon.

There are various other microblogging platforms on the Fediverse which may support these features and may be better suited to your purpose. For example Mbin, Hometown, Pleroma, Misskey or Mitra to name just a few.

[Help Design Lemmy] How to improve the Joinlemmy Donation page?

This is a follow-up to my previous post asking for design suggestions for the new donation dialog. It gave a lot of valuable feedback which is why I'm making another similar post.

This time it's about the donation page on join-lemmy.org (linked above). What can be done to improve the texts and design? For a start I already changed the text to the same one from the donation dialog. Here more space is available, so a longer text with more details could be written (possibly below the donation buttons).

What do you think about the available donation options? Do they work for you or would you prefer to donate through a different platform? On the other hand it is possible that the number of available options is already too confusing. Would it help to add a short description for each button?

So I would remove that whole section which will leave a lot of free space. What else can we put there, maybe a list of reasons why people should donate?

By the way I plan to make a recurring series of posts like this. The next ones will likely cover onboarding for new users, the reports page and more. If you know a catchy name for this series you can also comment it below.

[Help Design Lemmy] What is a good text for the donation dialog in Lemmy?

The next Lemmy version will add a donation dialog, which is shown once a year to every user, in order to increase the amount of donations for Lemmy development. You can see the current text in the screenshot above and in the translations repo. You can also checkout the frontend PR. Is there anything you would change about the text?

I looked around for some info about A/B testing but it seems relatively complicated to setup. Do you have any tools to suggest for that?

Not really. i know wikimedia foundation did that but it is probably not the best option. googling gives a few results but that's not really insightful.

And I can see what you mean about the text sounding unsure. What do you think about this one?

I don't think this solves the problems i mentioned (including in the pull request). donations and working full time are a means to an end. the average response by average joe might be "well they can just get a regular job like the rest of us".

I don't we should insist on just having a elevator pitch. sure an elevator pitch is very useful but i know that when i wanted to donate to charities I looked for a decent chunk of information to help me make a decision.

Curious about socialism

Hi! I am a stranger on this instance, I have read a lot of warnings about the "tankie triad", but wanted to see for myself and keep an open mind.

I watched this video, and it made me want to take a deep dive into socialism/communism, with

I understand how capitalism works, and I have doubts that it is a sustainable system for society long term, but social democracy has been a good way of keeping capitalism in-check in Norway. So even if capitalism is not ideal, it is in theory possible to tax the rich more and keep the whole thing going in the future. I also understand the exploitation and the extraction of surplus value, rent seeking etc.

Other capitalist countries such as the US is currently struggling with basic human needs. And that is "the shining beacon of capitalism".

In Norway it has for a long time been common to use the US as an example of what not to do.

I would actually say its much worse under a Republican administration, since Trump wants Gaza to be the home of a new golf course.

Do I support him in terms of Gaza and his support of Zionism? Not even remotely.

Do I support him standing up to Trump? Yes, definitely.

That doesn't make me forgive what he's done. I am just recognizing one thing being good. If I held back all support for any action based on another action I didnt agree with, or in this case loathed, then I'd be pulling support from pretty much any representative throughout all of history.

You're welcome to your opinion of course, but I think mine is pretty clear for what exactly I am supporting here.

Has anyone implemented automatic image compression?

Disclaimer: I'm not an instance admin, just a user. I hope it's okay to post here.

Problem

I had several photos which wouldn't post for some reason. After poking around a bit, I found out that my home server has an upload size limit of 5 MB.

Now, an upload size limit is perfectly reasonable. Storage is expensive, and Lemmy is primarily designed for link aggregation and discussion, not file hosting.

However, the way Lemmy currently behaves when it encounters a large file is not ideal, and varies depending on the app/UI.

At best, you get a cryptic error message like {"data":{"msg":"Exceeded maximum dimensions","files":null},"state":"success"} or {"data":{"files":null,"msg":"Too many pixels"},"state":"success"}, and at worst, your webpage/app stalls for an indefinite amount of time.

Solution?

Obviously, it would be prudent to improve the comprehensibility of the error messages, but if there were a way to automatically compress large images to below the size limit, that would eliminate the error me

Lemmy 1.0 will have automatic resizing for uploaded avatars and banners. Based on your post I also added some more config options to resize other uploads (for post images and markdown embeds). As well as options to disable video/animation uploads.

Wanted to start a convo with @johnonolan@mastodon.xyz from Ghost and @angus@socialhub.activitypub.rocks from Discourse about AP resource discovery.

A common use case from fediverse users is to be linked out to a site, and attempt to "bring it in" to their local instance/app of choice. This is done by taking the browser URL and pasting it into their site/app's search bar, or equivalent.

For example:

How has learning a language as an adult helped you to learn about a culture / gain new perspective?

I personally feel like I understand German-speaking people better the more I study the language.

E.g. my experience was that they are generally good listeners because their language has a sentence structure which forces the listener to wait for the most important information at the end of a sentence.

Funny, as a German speaker who learned Spanish its exactly the other way round. Here people already start responding to what you say before you can finish the sentence. And generally people love to talk very fast.

[Help Design Lemmy] What is a good text for the donation dialog in Lemmy?

The next Lemmy version will add a donation dialog, which is shown once a year to every user, in order to increase the amount of donations for Lemmy development. You can see the current text in the screenshot above and in the translations repo. You can also checkout the frontend PR. Is there anything you would change about the text?

From my POV not only „free of adds and tracking“ are important to underline. Also „free of political and commercial pressure“ is key, from my POV this is the most important, especially in the current political climate. I know this is not directly a reason why donations are needed, like the others are. But for someone to decide about a donation this is a very important reason to throw money in.

What are your thoughts on blocking AI scraper access? Any attempts to improve that on the side of Lemmy? Basic things like allowing to customize the robots.txt easily would already help.

I also recently tried this new AI block tool called Anubis with Lemmy, but for some reason it fails with Lemmy-ui. Might be interesting to investigate further.

You can load a different robots.txt in your nginx config, something like this:

location /robotx.txt {
    index /path/to/my/robots.txt;
}

Additionally 1.0 will change the "private instance" to work with federation enabled (see github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull…). Then only logged-in users will see content, while AI scrapers wont see anything except the login page.

You can export your settings, community follows etc and import them in another instance. Moving your existing posts and comments doesnt work well with federation.

I like Lemmy a lot, but when you share a URL it's just an ID number. Compare that to Reddit, where you can get a lot more information on what you're about to look at just from the URL alone.

There's some discussion of this here. It's not something I care too much about, but anyone is free to add more detailed URLs to either lemmy-ui or other front-ends.

Its been years but no one has found it important enough to them to work on.

Another issue is that post links are instance-specific, since the post ID isn't the same across instances.

There are external tools like lemmyverse.link/ and some browser addons to alleviate those issues, but it'd be nice if this could be addressed at the source if doable.

Potentially, using some sort of predictable hashing to get the same id across instances might also help in the detection of duplicate links so that they can be aggregated in a single place (sort of what was suggested at point 2 here).

I fear this could be too much of a breaking change though.

We won't add UUIDs or any "universal" sort of identifier, but universal links are still possible without them.

Im not familiar with that user, turns out he is already banned from lemmy.ml and many other instances. So there are consequences, but as long as lemmy.world admins are okay with him, he can keep posting there. This is a big benefit of Lemmy's federation compared to Reddit: even if theres a user you dislike, you can join an instance where he is completely insivible, while you can still interact with other users in the network. There is no single person or organization that can decide who can or cannot post on Lemmy, every instance decides for itself.

Afaik Bluesky is a for-profit company with millions in budget and probably a dozen or more fulltime employees. Of course they have much more resources to polish the new user experience, and also have an actual marketing budget. Plus in practice its completely centralized, they dont need to worry about all the difficulties that federation brings. Its only natural that they are more successful than Mastodon in the short term. But sooner or later they will also have problems when the Bluesky admins make decisions that the community doesnt like, and then there may be another migration wave to the Fediverse.

For the same reasons mentioned above, Lemmy cant become as easy as Bluesky. But the more contributors and donors we have, the closer we can get.

Lots of new features, so many that its hard to keep track of all. The biggest one might be private communities, where only users approved by moderators can browse and post.

What is your opinion on Bluesky being more popular than Mastodone because it is easier for most?

It shows only that like most open source tools, US media institutes a general conspiracy of silence about platforms like the fediverse, and mastodon (or lemmy). Not because they're not user-friendly enough, but because ultimately it's not something the US can control. Bluesky is really just a rebranded twitter, founded by the same people, but with owners more friendly to the US democratic party, as opposed to musk who is more friendly to republicans. Both are US corporations subject to its laws and beholden to push pro-US foreign policy lines.

I hope most of the world will choose to escape all these monopolistic US-controlled platforms, and for countries to fund open source, and encourage their own citizens to use community-run alternatives.

Lemmy won't become bluesky, because we're a community/topic-focused link aggregator, not a person-focused microblogging platform.

I'm not a Lemmy dev (well I've made a couple of small commits lol), but this type of question can be hard to answer from the inside of a project.

It would probably be easier to answer a question more like: "Do you plan to implement feature XYZ in order to be easier to use like Bluesky?"

There are some more obvious things, like mod tooling, but I'm gonna concentrate on smaller, niche UX issues that I think arise from how it is designed already, because I think there are probably already enough voices who will speak up for the bigger things.

It's bad enough that third-party apps do these things (and others, like spoiler text) without following the spec consistently. But can they really be blamed when even the two main first-party UIs don't do it right? The post/comment language feature is awesome, as is the fact that you can do such a wide variety of syntax including subscript. But if users are not getting a consistent experience with these across platforms, it leads to confusion.

Spoiler text syntax is clumsy. I like the idea of having collapsible text, but ::: spoiler [display text] is an insanely wordy way of doing it. In what other context is markdown do anything similar to requiring the literal text spoiler? It would be great if (a) an inline spoiler text syntax could be implemented, similar to >!Reddit's!< or ||Discord's||, and (b) if a more elegant collapsible text syntax could be created.
Lemmy has a nasty habit of transforming user input. I just found out it converts your backslashes into forward slashes (see this comment), but a while ago I noticed that it completely removes text posted between angle brackets , which is annoying when trying to write pseudo-XML. {does it allow braces?} [square brackets?]. It feels to me like a relatively lazy attempt to sanitise user inputs, and it creates a poor UX, especially since I'm sure prepared statements and other safe data handling is employed. In my opinion any time you're changing what a user wrote, that's an anti-pattern. If you can't just leave it how it is, it's better to just block posting with a clear error message explaining why

Basically, I'd just like to see an overall focus on the user experience and how it all fits together as a system.

Also my little pet feature: keyboard navigation. Back on that other site, before the redesign, there was incredible keyboard navigation thanks to the Enhancement Suite. j/k to navigate up/down through comments. Enter to collapse. a/z to up/downvote. Etc. It's a delight to use, and is a big part of the reason I could never move to the redesign, before I came over here. Not having that is a big drawback IMO.

edit 2: I was just reminded of another example of the lemmy-ui vs Jerboa confusion, as well as another example of well-intentioned by ultimately anti-patternesque transformation of user text: how user and Community mentions are handled.

@nutomic@lemmy.ml will not be a hyperlink for viewers in lemmy-ui, but /u/nutomic@lemmy.ml will be...despite the latter being generally not the preferred way to do it. lemmy-ui also does this awkward thing where if you use the autofill suggestions when typing a name, it wraps them in a hard-instanced URL instead of the better UX of taking someone to their profile on your instance: @dessalines@lemmy.ml.

Communities are even weirder. Allowing the autofill of !announcements@lemmy.ml will create a hard-instanced URL ([!community@domain](https://domain/c/community)), but then the parser ignores this and creates a URL to the user's instance. If, instead, URLs went where the user's text input says they go, but the autofill would default to naked Community mentions such as !announcements@lemmy.ml, this would be a much better experience.

Meanwhile, Jerboa doesn't have an autofill capability for users or Communities. Users who are mentioned with /u/ are not linked, while users who are linked with @ get a link that is handled within the user's instance, regardless of whether it's a hard-instanced link or a naked mention. Communities are also always handled within the user's instance.

Regarding the markdown point for lemmy-ui, I think part of the issue is that we don't use a markdown parser tailored to our purposes. We use markdown-it, and our custom (non-common mark, so stuff like the spoiler blocks) stuff uses plugins for it like this one. One of these days I'd like to make a markdown parser specifically for Lemmy.

The plugin architecture for markdown makes a lot of sense, because it allows other projects to mix and match markdown rules for their specific use case. I also used some of your Rust markdown plugins for Ibis.

All these are due to a lack of developers for open source in general. Jerboa needs more devs than just me and @MV-GH, but no one else has stepped up to take on fixing any of these. If there were 5 more of me, I could get these done, but I'm too busy.

There's a forum sort called NewComments, that servers and any user can use to turn lemmy into a forum-style feed.

Instances can already disable downvotes site-wide, but we also already have fine-grained vote display settings:

Merging communities is no more possible than merging mastodon users.

Which mod tools do we need?

We already have RSS feeds.

We already have the ability to save posts and comments.

Word filters and flairs are in the works.

There's too many other things here for me to answer.

Im not a fan of microblogging, so for me Lemmy should definitely be more like a forum.

As mentioned by others, downvotes can already disabled by the instance, so that local users cannot downvote and federated downvotes are ignored. Lemmy 1.0 will also add per-community downvote settings.

I only work on the backend, lemmy-ui and other frontends could definitely use more contributors to work on these things. Im not familiar with all the different apps but they are probably missing many features that already exist in the backend. That said subscribing to blocklists and allowlists seems a bit risky, as you can end up with most instances subscribing to the same list, giving the creator a lot of power. I believe Mastodon or Twitter had some drama like that. Anyway this could be implemented with the API.

Lemmy is not a company with a boss ordering the workers what to do. Everyone including me and Dessalines are volunteers, and chooses for himself what he wants to work on. As its all open source its not really competition, more users on NodeBB is also good for Lemmy as it means more user choice and activity.

One reason Im working on Ibis is because I waited for a long time for someone to start a federated wiki project. Its a major thing thats missing from the Fediverse. As no one else did, I have to do it myself. The other reason is to have something different that Lemmy to code on. Working on Lemmy can be quite exhausting because the project is already very mature, so every new change needs to pass tests, be approved by other maintainers and work with the existing features. Ibis is still in early stages and under my control alone, so I can do whatever I want.

A lot of things would be nice to have, but with the very limited resources we have there is only so much we can do. So we need to focus on the main functionality, its basically the unix philosophy: "Do one thing and do it well".

We have gone back and forth a few times on how deleted content is returned by the API, its very tricky to get right.

This is all a matter of dev resources. If we had maybe 6 full-time devs, we could handle things like backwards compatibility.

People forget that lemmy, like other open source hobby projects, don't have the resources that large corporations do. People understandably get frustrated when there's breaking changes, but they also need to not put enterprise-level expectations on a small number of people.

If someone wanted to work on that, of course we wouldn't be opposed, but you should know how monumental a task that would be.

I would reply directly to that post, but it looks like the admin (who is also the Tesseract dev) has completely blocked federation with lemmy.ml by IP block or useragent block. So Im going to respond here to his complaints:

Lemmy didnt have a single breaking change since version 0.19 which was released 1 year and 4 months ago. And the breaking changes in that version were quite minor. Before that was 0.18, 1 year and 6 months earlier. That version only removed websockets, so most third-party app devs who used the HTTP API didnt notice any difference. Meaning the API has been almost unchanged for over three years which is quite long for a project that hasnt reached a stable version yet. 1.0 includes all the breaking changes that were held back over the years, so that we dont need any more breaking changes for a long time.

That said it would be great if we could keep backwards compatibility with the existing API in Lemmy 1.0. Problem is with all the major changes we are doing now, it would take a huge amount of work to implement this kind of backwards compatibility. If w

This only states the multiple ways of how one can use lemmy, but neither envisions how one should use it. And vision is important for the non technical user, especially when exploring new grounds, because vision makes him go further. Not infinite overwhelming possibilities, technicalities and potential headaches.
It's simple or it's complicated.

I still don't follow you. In the very first link, we direct people a page that lets them explore or join a server. You don't need to know anything about federation to use lemmy.

How do we avoid defederation through leemy.world and lemmy.ml? What I mean is, there are instances for Canada, or FOSS, or any other inalienable trait. Most can communicate with eachother with exception of porn specific instances. When new people sign up, they look for popular instances and there are no restrictions on what you can join. So, larger instances like .world and .ml will have more foot traffic and more new signups. I think that's just an immediate path to recreate reddit and I think that needs to be recognised and seriously avoided, at all costs. The whole point is that this is not-for-profit, free of advertisements and already voyager as downloaded for android contains ads. Also, unless specifying only foss software during the building process of app on linux, ads are present there too. I would love to see some community driven livestreams or events, where we could fund the developers ourselves through donations. We're all refugess from reddit, but that doesn't mean we have to be "libre reddit." I think we could easily fund ourselves if we fostered more of a connected se... mostra di più

Any possibility for hash tags to be added? Cross instance topics would be so much easier to browse especially when similar topics are discussed across different community names across difference instances.

This is a serious problem, that we didn't anticipate during the first reddit migration wave. Since then, we added a join dialog to join-lemmy.org, and tried to make its join page sort by random, to spread out users more evenly.

Unfortunately, the people evangelizing lemmy on other platforms like reddit, continue to link specific popular servers, rather than join-lemmy.org or server pickers that sort by random. And people also tend to just link their own home server as a sign-up, instead of join-lemmy.org, so we'll likely continue to see centralization problems.

We're doing what we can to fight it, but other need to also.

I would love to see some community driven livestreams or events, where we could fund the developers ourselves through donations. We're all refugess from reddit, but that doesn't mean we have to be "libre reddit." I think we could easily fund ourselves if we fostered more of a connected sense of community through events and conversations

Random general question, how do you feel about file hosting? When posting, I tend to avoid uploading media larger than like, 5MB, just cause I know that the cost of storing said media can get exorbitant very quickly and I wouldn't want to be part of the burden.. I'm not able to donate just yet. Knowing this, I am currently on the fence on whether I should create a "gaming clips" community.

That said, it's nice to be able to embed media from other sources (despite it potentially not working natively for mobile platforms if I'm not mistaken?), which got me thinking: it'd be nice to have some sort of preference list of image/video hosting hosts that users can add to or remove from, and uploading directly from the comment/create post view would use the first working file hosting domain from the list.. Just spitballing here.

The upload function is mainly meant for images, like others said its better to use external sites for video uploads. Integrating upload to those remote sites seems like a lot of work for little benefit though.

Torrents should be used, as it entirely solves the static data distribution problem, and keeps servers from having to shoulder potentially enormous hosting costs.

I've even added a lot of torrent-support related features to lemmy-ui and jerboa, that will come in 1.0

Communities should be more unified across servers, especially for niche ones. I want to see an active Metroid community, I don't give a crap what instance is hosting it (or if it's a mostly-opaque medley of instances) so long as I'm federated with it. This is probably the biggest UX misunderstanding new users have.

Having distinct communities is a feature, not a bug. If two cities set up their own lemmy instances, say lemmy.sao_luis.br, and lemmy.lagos.ng, they can each have a news community, without them overlapping.

Do a search for metroid, and subscribe to whichever ones you like.

Look, this is just my take -- I think this is bad UX. I'm not saying federation isn't a good idea -- on the contrary, I like the idea that many different posts in the same community are all hosted on different instances. Sure, for a community like news it doesn't make as much sense -- fixes for this would be that some communities don't have the behaviour I'm suggesting, or the convention is to call it sao_luis_news or something.

When a instance goes permanently offline, does the content vanish? If so, could there possibly be a way for another instance to "adopt" the content on their instance so those posts aren't lost to time?

I think it might help reassure people to pick smaller instances.

It can't be transferred, but the posts / content will never vanish. Most importantly, it will stay searcheable.

The best option is just to create another community on a living server, and link to the local version of a dead one in a sidebar.

Edit: I suppose I shouldn't be answering this. Kinda forgot the thread I'm in. I guess I asked something as well.

If your instance was federated with it when it existed then your instance automatically has its own backup of it is as far as I understand things. I would like clarity on this however. My instance is a few days older than this account. Therefore the smaller instances that have already died are already duplicated locally here at sh.itjust.works. I can still view vlemmy, waveform.social, lemmy.film, (etc.) communities/posts as essentially an archive.

What I'd like to know is if I linked a sh.itjust.works link to one of those threads could a user of a more recent instance load the content?

I'm not sure what point it would ultimately serve as with the host instance being offline nothing could federate out between us anyway.

This, content is already mirrored to federated instances and stored forever (though media may not be included).

What I’d like to know is if I linked a sh.itjust.works link to one of those threads could a user of a more recent instance load the content?

Lemmy only loads content from the original instance where it was created, otherwise it would be possible to impersonate users. So it is not possible to load that.

Coming from Reddit I feel Lemmy could use a way to sort posts within communities by top posts within a time frame we choose. That without this feature gamers and gooners will default to reddit over Lemmy.

Lemmy already uses recommendation algorithms for most of its sorts.

As far as a "personalized" one that isn't the communities you explicitly subscribed to, I don't think its really necessary, but it wouldn't be impossible to add (someone could probably come up with some good adjacent-community queries based on the most partipipated communities of users who you've liked comments and posts of. Make an issue for this on the lemmy github if you would like.

I'm quite discontent with how few options there is to explore Lemmy. And it doesn't helps that the top posts are always related to politics.

We should have community unifying.

I dont think theres an issue for this yet, feel free to open one. It could be a checkbox for "Blocked Instances" setting, eg "Also block users".

What are the plans the improve discoverability?

There is an issue for easier discovery of federated communities which is part of our roadmap. Piefed recently implemented a similar feature which we will take inspiration from. It also helps if you block communities that you dont want to see. Are there any other ideas you are thinking of?

More customization for site owners. I have an independent instance and there's a lot of things on there that are confusing for people unfamiliar with the fefiverse or lemmy. The easiest solution would be to mention in the sidebar or in a welcome post that donations are not for you, but for the developers of the software. Also the frontend supports custom css so you can change the entire design. It is also possible to use a different frontend or write your own, as its all open source.

To be honest its quite bold of you asking to remove the donation buttons. Working on Lemmy has been our fulltime job for the past years, and we rely on user donations to pay for food and rent. Yet you are getting the results of our work entirely for free. Having some donation links is a very small price for that.

Indeed it is a big ask, however, It would be something I'd be willing to pay for. Many foss projects make money from paying customers as well as donations. I also mention and explain what lemmy is and encourage people to check it out in the getting started area of the site.

How much would you be willing to pay for this? Im not sure if its worth the effort because its not clear if anyone else besides you would be interested, and it would require a bunch of work to setup. It would require an automated way to check donation status, and a way to build and distribute these private releases. Feel free to respond via private message.

I guess I wasn't thinking about how much work it would actually be in order to enforce it. I doubt I could afford the cost. Maybe if it was coupled with a managed services type of deal and you had enough subsrcibers it could be enough to hire another staff member? It seems like adding "premium" features could alieanate the userbase unless it's just cosmetic changes.

No worries that's what the AMA is for. I thought about managed hosting before, but it would likely involve mainly support and sysadmin work, while my passion is programming.

You could always outsource and automate the basic troubleshooting aspects. Running updates accross multiple customers would be a breeze. I beleive I've seen one managed services company that will set up an instance and manage it for around $20/mo.

That would mean hiring someone, which requires initial funding like a bank loan. It is also necessary to get the funding and skill to setup a website, automate the hosting and most importantly run a marketing campaign. Otherwise no one will know about the service nor use it. So it requires setting up a whole business, do you know how to do that?

Do you have any plans to make it easier to manage the images stored in pictrs? One issue I have is that I used to proxy images, I no longer do that, but now I have like 300GB on backblaze doing nothing. In this post I outlined more precisely what I mean.

Do you plan to introduce some kind of post tags into Lemmy, preferably something that will behave like Hashtags on Mastodon and other activitypub platforms? I know that Lemmy has been embedding community name as a hashtag for a while now, though having tags that can be populated by users would help discovery greatly.

Well they don't have to show up as hashtags to users on Lemmy, they can show up as their own designated tags you add to the post on creation of editing. Just some form of post tags to indicate the category of a post (could even be specific to communities like subreddit flairs) but they would show up as hashtags on Mastodon, similar to how Lemmy already embeds a hashtag of the community into posts.

I live in Spain, the cost of living here is much cheaper than Germany or especially the United States. I also dont need luxuries, and have enough money saved to last for a while. If donations are not enough I could always work for some company, and spend less time on Lemmy.

The only thing that concerns me about handling spoilers is how the third party apps handle them. Do you think it would be a good idea to also blur the entire image (not only the thumbnail) and remove the blur only when the user clicks the image?

From my perspective we need better Mod and Admin tools. Forum software has a lot of them but Lemmy is lacking in this department.

The key important one is being able to move posts to different communities. You'll often get reports of posts not being appropriate for a community but there is no way to actually move it.

It shouldn't be too difficult. A move is essentially a cross-post but it keeps the OP as the poster (rather than the cross-poster). You'd then want to lock the original post, and either hide it or add a message directing people to the new post. That's all current forum software does.

The main question is how this can work in terms of federation. When creating a new post it directly references the community url. If the user and community are on different instances then the community instance cannot rewrite the post to reference a different community. So it would have to tell the post creator to (automatically) resubmit the post to the new community. Same for all comments, they would have to be recreated by the respective author's instance in the new post. Seems quite complex to implement.

Lemmy like all federated services, can't rewrite history, but you can already cross-post. It would just take someone adding that as an issue to lemmy-ui and working on it.

This post makes some good points about reports federating (being worked on, I believe) but also about the lack of what we'll call a "moderation panel" where you can access tools for the community, like seeing a list of banned users and being able to add to it there or unban someone.

There are other "nice to have" tools like post approval

I am curious to see what moderation tools PieFed, has and NodeBB now they are federated, but the documentation is skimpy on that front.

I really don't get this. Why is editing user content with slur_filter or modifying URLs accepted but allowing mods/admins to change the NSFW toggle isn't? It also ignores that savvy-enough admins can edit user content with SQL queries.

I think slur filters, tracking param removals, and local link rewriting are acceptable, because (with the exception of the slur filter) they're non-moderation actions, and also applied uniformly regardless of who made them.

It also ignores that savvy-enough admins can edit user content with SQL queries.

That's unavoidable of course, anyone with DB access ultimately can edit things. But if people catch on, I doubt your server would gain many users or last that long. Most importantly, we shouldn't allow that to happen via the API.

You're free to start a "Should mods be able to edit user's data?" discussion, but I doubt it would get much support, especially from reddit allowing this and it souring everyone to it.

Most importantly, we shouldn’t allow that to happen via the API.

My view is that not adding this to the API will only encourage admins who want this to do it through less transparent means, like injecting fake activities into the sent_activity table. Most admins are reasonable people, and have good relations with their users, so if admins explained themselves then I think most users would be pretty accepting.

You’re free to start a “Should mods be able to edit user’s data?” discussion, but I doubt it would get much support, especially from reddit allowing this and it souring everyone to it.

I mean there's been like 3 or 4 GitHub issues opened about this, so there's clearly some demand for it. Should I make a post in !lemmy@lemmy.ml? So users not on GitHub can chime in.

mod mail, so that users can reach out to the whole mod team at once, and the team can come back to them
a more structured mod queue, allowing to filter by community. The Reddit one on old.reddit was good to help keep an overview on the mod actions to take

The upcoming combined modlog has this, as well as other more detailed filters.

You can read through these issues related to modmail, but the short version is that it's way out of scope for us, and not something we have time to do. Replicating private group chats is better done by other services like matrix, or using a shared email inbox.

Onboarding experience needs to be simpler for mass adoption

If the fediverse is to be adopted by the masses, the onboarding experience needs to change. A new user can't be presented with a choice of instances as part of signing up or at least the process of making the choice needs to dumbed down a lot. I don't know how or if this can be solved, I just know as someone involved in app development and UX that the current experience won't work.

My mother would not know how to handle this paragraph:
"Lemmy.world is one node in a network of hundreds of Lemmy instances. Before you sign up here, take a moment to explore all the instances at lemmyverse.net. You may find an instance with a regional or topical emphasis that speaks to you! Don’t worry about being left out; Lemmy instances are interconnected so users from each instance can participate with communities on other instances."

For mass adoption it needs to be so simple that even non-techie older people can get through it without feeling like they might be doing something wrong.

I think they should stick to the "email provider" analogy. Whole paragraph should be something like:

The only thing you need to start interacting with the Fediverse is an account with one of the many providers, just like with email! Providers are freely available across the globe: pick one that suits your location or interests best! You can start browsing the content of nearly the entire Fediverse from whatever provider you choose. Don't worry, you can always create an account with a different provider later.

You could add a sentence or two about where to find sensible defaults or link an article that explains the more subtle things.

I think the emphasis on instances (and not naming them the more familiar providers) hinders adoption.

Also noteworthy, for those instances using lemmy-ansible (should be most) this release should fix video streaming for Safari clients (videos refusing to play), and enable progressive streaming for all pictrs videos (before in chrome/firefox/native players they would have to finish downloading before playing).

For those instances using a custom nginx reverse proxy with caching enabled, please enable the slice module! After upgrading to 0.19.10 feel free to ask me and I can help out to check to make sure it's working properly.

I (Evan) also spoke on stage with Peter Cottle of Threads, Mike Masnick of Techdirt, and David Imel. We had a great conversation about the way the Fediverse is developing in 2025, how the different connected networks are interoperating, and what to look forward to in the coming year.

One compelling part of the Fediverse House experience was the outreach to different communities that can benefit from using social web technologies: marketers, creators, and publishers. I think addressing broader sets of needs can be helpful for spreading the technology. The talks were recorded and will be released online over the coming months.

Thanks to everyone who attended or spoke at Fediverse House; especially to Cory Doctorow, who gave a great talk about enshittification and the social web. And a special thanks to the team at Flipboard, including Mike McCue, Marcie McCue, and Mia Quagliarello for making the whole event happen and for inviting SWF to participate. The Social Web Foundation will be at Fediverse House in Austin, TX on March 9 and 10, at the same time as South by Southwest Interactive. This is the first ever Fediverse event at SXSW, and we can’t wait to reach out to new and old fediversians at the event in downtown Austin. We’ll be coordinating two events at the space, and I’ll also be speaking on stage.
I’ll be speaking with David Imel, Peter Cottle and Mike Masnick at 10AM at the “Fediverse Corner” roundtable panel. (RSVP)
We’re organizing a Networking Session and Light Lunch for Fediverse participants and the fedicurious from 11:30AM to 1:30PM on Sunday, March 9. It’s the best place to meet up with Fediverse-involved people during South by. (RSVP)

great to hear they were recorded and will be released. re the different communities that fedi can benefit, my focus is on the civic potential. that we can someday have our public conversation most influenced by the info and ideas the public thinks deserve attention, not big money media & advertisers. for that to ever be true, we need mass adoption. we need it integrated into all media. and we also need to deal harshly with harassment, but kindly with other stuff we don't like :)
