Edit: it appears to be a mistake, so I’m not making any changes for now. Either way, I still ❀️Fastly for the support they’ve given me and the capabilities their services provide.

Original:

Oof. I have to make some changes to infosec.exchange and related services - I just got a massive bill from Fastly. I’m hoping it’s a mistake, but I can’t afford to risk it not being a mistake so will be working to reroute traffic through a server in Hetzner.

sigh. i fucking hate that shit, man. i just got to do that with tesla. we had an outage last week and the powerwalls just 'didnt do shit'. i called and asked about it and apparently:

- there is a new feature for manual or automatic backup that a user can toggle
- it defaulted to manual
- it doesnt show up in my app anywhere
- i had to wait on hold for 90 mins, twice, to have them toggle it for me

fuckin useless, these people

in reply to Viss

@Viss it’s interesting. I got a bill in email but my account doesn’t show a bill and I’m pretty sure it isn’t phishing

hey who knows maybe they decided to let an LLM do shit.

im pretty sure thats what happened to me that one time a couple years ago that paypal 'fired me as a customer' when i paid one of my massage therapists without any warning or cause or explanation, and nobody cared until i made a big fuss on twitter about it and krebs noticed. someone came to fix it, but refused to say anything other than 'our machine learning ai made a mistake'.

but now i know.
they were using an llm
it was high

in reply to Viss

@Viss
That would essentially be the only straw to break for me to rip it out and replace it.

in reply to Fennix

@fennix spoken like a dude who has no idea how much it took to put it in in the first place
in reply to Viss

@Viss
Dunno about rules in your locality, but nah. Done it twice.
@Viss
in reply to Fennix

@fennix @Viss in fairness, the Fastly service is about the best thing to happen to infosec.exchange (from a usability perspective), so it makes me incredibly sad to have to move off them. But I can’t afford another $8000 per month while having no income.
in reply to Jerry πŸ¦™πŸ’πŸ¦™

l think this is a mistake. To be clear, the Fastly service IS worth the amount they charge, just that it’s not normally something I can afford.
in reply to Jerry πŸ¦™πŸ’πŸ¦™

maybe there was a process/policy change, or a staffing change or something, and the infosec.exchange account got shuffled inadvertently?
in reply to Viss

@Viss ...or a billing process error and their systems processed the correct billing/comp plan after the bill was sent since it doesn't show the amount due. @jerry

infosec.exchange/@jerry/115488…

@Viss it’s interesting. I got a bill in email but my account doesn’t show a bill and I’m pretty sure it isn’t phishing

in reply to Paul Chambers🚧

@paul yeah that sorta thing suggests someone fucked up internally, either via misclassifying the account, or not noting it correctly, or a code push/change caused it to barf because its a comped account

no matter how you slice it, this telegraphs 'some shit changed under the hood' to me, be it because a person did something, or a process changed, or something to that effect

in reply to Viss

@Viss @paul I’m not going to give them too much crap because they offer a good service at the right price for us (and many other mastodon instances), and if that’s the worse that happens, it’s not bad. But I do need to get my blood pressure down now
in reply to Jerry πŸ¦™πŸ’πŸ¦™

I watch this way too much... for that. @Viss youtube.com/watch?v=v_EjNbjQk7…

in reply to Jerry πŸ¦™πŸ’πŸ¦™

@paul oh totally, i wouldnt shit on them either, im just spitballing about why it could have happened
in reply to Jerry πŸ¦™πŸ’πŸ¦™

I welcome you to Hetzner and joining Hippodon there.

My brain thought you used Bunny.net though for some reason.

in reply to Sraars

@sraars I used bunny for a long time. Fastly’s service is absolutely amazing, particularly compared to bunny. Hetzner is where our infrastructure currently is/has been for about 5 years, so not new to me fortunately.
in reply to Jerry πŸ¦™πŸ’πŸ¦™

Well at least I’m not remembering incorrectly.

I’ve enjoyed Hetzner for the most part. Though I keep this server in Helenski.

in reply to SpaceLifeForm

@SpaceLifeForm I am hoping a mistake. But it costs $300 for each day I let it go if it’s not a mistake.
in reply to Jerry πŸ¦™πŸ’πŸ¦™

That is a lot of bandwidth that you do not know if the users actually engaged with.

Maybe I am cranky2.
