What are your thoughts on blocking AI scraper access? Any attempts to improve that on the side of Lemmy? Basic things like allowing to customize the robots.txt easily would already help.
I also recently tried this new AI block tool called Anubis with Lemmy, but for some reason it fails with Lemmy-ui. Might be interesting to investigate further.
You can load a different robots.txt in your nginx config, something like this:

Additionally 1.0 will change the "private instance" to work with federation enabled (see github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull…). Then only logged-in users will see content, while AI scrapers wont see anything except the login page.
The private instance setting makes it so that only logged-in users can browse posts. It also includes a check which requires that federation is disabled. The idea was that content on such instances...
You can export your settings, community follows etc and import them in another instance. Moving your existing posts and comments doesnt work well with federation.
I like Lemmy a lot, but when you share a URL it's just an ID number. Compare that to Reddit, where you can get a lot more information on what you're about to look at just from the URL alone.

There's also protocol handlers. On your home instance, lemmy-ui (or your favourite app would register itself as a web+lemmy: protocol handler. In JS this looks like navigator.registerProtocolHandle...
Potentially, using some sort of predictable hashing to get the same id across instances might also help in the detection of duplicate links so that they can be aggregated in a single place (sort of what was suggested at point 2 here).
I fear this could be too much of a breaking change though.
Im not familiar with that user, turns out he is already banned from lemmy.ml and many other instances. So there are consequences, but as long as lemmy.world admins are okay with him, he can keep posting there. This is a big benefit of Lemmy's federation compared to Reddit: even if theres a user you dislike, you can join an instance where he is completely insivible, while you can still interact with other users in the network. There is no single person or organization that can decide who can or cannot post on Lemmy, every instance decides for itself.

Afaik Bluesky is a for-profit company with millions in budget and probably a dozen or more fulltime employees. Of course they have much more resources to polish the new user experience, and also have an actual marketing budget. Plus in practice its completely centralized, they dont need to worry about all the difficulties that federation brings. Its only natural that they are more successful than Mastodon in the short term. But sooner or later they will also have problems when the Bluesky admins make decisions that the community doesnt like, and then there may be another migration wave to the Fediverse.
For the same reasons mentioned above, Lemmy cant become as easy as Bluesky. But the more contributors and donors we have, the closer we can get.
Lots of new features, so many that its hard to keep track of all. The biggest one might be private communities, where only users approved by moderators can browse and post.
What is your opinion on Bluesky being more popular than Mastodone because it is easier for most?
It shows only that like most open source tools, US media institutes a general conspiracy of silence about platforms like the fediverse, and mastodon (or lemmy). Not because they're not user-friendly enough, but because ultimately it's not something the US can control. Bluesky is really just a rebranded twitter, founded by the same people, but with owners more friendly to the US democratic party, as opposed to musk who is more friendly to republicans. Both are US corporations subject to its laws and beholden to push pro-US foreign policy lines.
I hope most of the world will choose to escape all these monopolistic US-controlled platforms, and for countries to fund open source, and encourage their own citizens to use community-run alternatives.
Lemmy won't become bluesky, because we're a community/topic-focused link aggregator, not a person-focused microblogging platform.

But if users are not getting a consistent experience with these across platforms, it leads to confusion.
Spoiler text syntax is clumsy. I like the idea of having collapsible text, but ::: spoiler [display text] is an insanely wordy way of doing it. In what other context is markdown do anything similar to requiring the literal text spoiler? It would be great if (a) an inline spoiler text syntax could be implemented, similar to >!Reddit's!< or ||Discord's||, and (b) if a more elegant collapsible text syntax could be created.
Lemmy has a nasty habit of transforming user input. I just found out it converts your backslashes into forward slashes (see this comment), but a while ago I noticed that it completely removes text posted between angle brackets , which is annoying when trying to write pseudo-XML. {does it allow braces?} [square brackets?]. It feels to me like a relatively lazy attempt to sanitise user inputs, and it creates a poor UX, especially since I'm sure prepared statements and other safe data handling is employed. In my opinion any time you're changing what a user wrote, that's an anti-pattern. If you can't just leave it how it is, it's better to just block posting with a clear error message explaining why
Basically, I'd just like to see an overall focus on the user experience and how it all fits together as a system.
Also my little pet feature: keyboard navigation. Back on that other site, before the redesign, there was incredible keyboard navigation thanks to the Enhancement Suite. j/k to navigate up/down through comments. Enter to collapse. a/z to up/downvote. Etc. It's a delight to use, and is a big part of the reason I could never move to the redesign, before I came over here. Not having that is a big drawback IMO.

edit 2: I was just reminded of another example of the lemmy-ui vs Jerboa confusion, as well as another example of well-intentioned by ultimately anti-patternesque transformation of user text: how user and Community mentions are handled.
@nutomic@lemmy.ml will not be a hyperlink for viewers in lemmy-ui, but /u/nutomic@lemmy.ml will be...despite the latter being generally not the preferred way to do it. lemmy-ui also does this awkward thing where if you use the autofill suggestions when typing a name, it wraps them in a hard-instanced URL instead of the better UX of taking someone to their profile on your instance: @dessalines@lemmy.ml.
Communities are even weirder. Allowing the autofill of !announcements@lemmy.ml will create a hard-instanced URL ([!community@domain](https://domain/c/community)), but then the parser ignores this and creates a URL to the user's instance. If, instead, URLs went where the user's text input says they go, but the autofill would default to naked Community mentions such as !announcements@lemmy.ml, this would be a much better experience.
Meanwhile, Jerboa doesn't have an autofill capability for users or Communities. Users who are mentioned with /u/ are not linked, while users who are linked with @ get a link that is handled within the user's instance, regardless of whether it's a hard-instanced link or a naked mention. Communities are also always handled within the user's instance.
Regarding the markdown point for lemmy-ui, I think part of the issue is that we don't use a markdown parser tailored to our purposes. We use markdown-it, and our custom (non-common mark, so stuff like the spoiler blocks) stuff uses plugins for it like this one. One of these days I'd like to make a markdown parser specifically for Lemmy.
Markdown-it - modern pluggable markdown parser.. Latest version: 14.1.0, last published: a year ago. Start using markdown-it in your project by running `npm i markdown-it`. There are 4715 other projects in the npm registry using markdown-it.
The plugin architecture for markdown makes a lot of sense, because it allows other projects to mix and match markdown rules for their specific use case. I also used some of your Rust markdown plugins for Ibis.
All these are due to a lack of developers for open source in general. Jerboa needs more devs than just me and @MV-GH, but no one else has stepped up to take on fixing any of these. If there were 5 more of me, I could get these done, but I'm too busy.

if on my instance downvotes are deactivated, do they still influence my home when I browse subs from other instances that have downvotes?

I only work on the backend, lemmy-ui and other frontends could definitely use more contributors to work on these things. Im not familiar with all the different apps but they are probably missing many features that already exist in the backend. That said subscribing to blocklists and allowlists seems a bit risky, as you can end up with most instances subscribing to the same list, giving the creator a lot of power. I believe Mastodon or Twitter had some drama like that. Anyway this could be implemented with the API.

Lemmy is not a company with a boss ordering the workers what to do. Everyone including me and Dessalines are volunteers, and chooses for himself what he wants to work on. As its all open source its not really competition, more users on NodeBB is also good for Lemmy as it means more user choice and activity.
One reason Im working on Ibis is because I waited for a long time for someone to start a federated wiki project. Its a major thing thats missing from the Fediverse. As no one else did, I have to do it myself. The other reason is to have something different that Lemmy to code on. Working on Lemmy can be quite exhausting because the project is already very mature, so every new change needs to pass tests, be approved by other maintainers and work with the existing features. Ibis is still in early stages and under my control alone, so I can do whatever I want.

A lot of things would be nice to have, but with the very limited resources we have there is only so much we can do. So we need to focus on the main functionality, its basically the unix philosophy: "Do one thing and do it well".

This is all a matter of dev resources. If we had maybe 6 full-time devs, we could handle things like backwards compatibility.
People forget that lemmy, like other open source hobby projects, don't have the resources that large corporations do. People understandably get frustrated when there's breaking changes, but they also need to not put enterprise-level expectations on a small number of people.
If someone wanted to work on that, of course we wouldn't be opposed, but you should know how monumental a task that would be.

Lemmy didnt have a single breaking change since version 0.19 which was released 1 year and 4 months ago. And the breaking changes in that version were quite minor. Before that was 0.18, 1 year and 6 months earlier. That version only removed websockets, so most third-party app devs who used the HTTP API didnt notice any difference. Meaning the API has been almost unchanged for over three years which is quite long for a project that hasnt reached a stable version yet. 1.0 includes all the breaking changes that were held back over the years, so that we dont need any more breaking changes for a long time.

What's the vision for using lemmy? User should create an account on one server, and use all? Or should create users on multiple servers? The first one seems like the way to go, but it wasn't quite clear for me when I signed up
This only states the multiple ways of how one can use lemmy, but neither envisions how one should use it. And vision is important for the non technical user, especially when exploring new grounds, because vision makes him go further. Not infinite overwhelming possibilities, technicalities and potential headaches. It's simple or it's complicated.
I still don't follow you. In the very first link, we direct people a page that lets them explore or join a server. You don't need to know anything about federation to use lemmy.
How do we avoid defederation through leemy.world and lemmy.ml? What I mean is, there are instances for Canada, or FOSS, or any other inalienable trait. Most can communicate with eachother with exception of porn specific instances. When new people sign up, they look for popular instances and there are no restrictions on what you can join. How do we avoid defederation through leemy.world and lemmy.ml? What I mean is, there are instances for Canada, or FOSS, or any other inalienable trait. Most can communicate with eachother with exception of porn specific instances. When new people sign up, they look for popular instances and there are no restrictions on what you can join. @nutomic recently added Donation dialogs, which adds support for wikipedia-style banners (which are annoying, but they work). I think most of lemmy's problems could be solved if we were able to add a few more full time devs. We currently don't even have a single dev funded.
Random general question, how do you feel about file hosting? When posting, I tend to avoid uploading media larger than like, 5MB, just cause I know that the cost of storing said media can get exorbitant very quickly and I wouldn't want to be part of the burden.. I'm not able to donate just yet. Knowing this, I am currently on the fence on whether I should create a "gaming clips" community.
That said, it's nice to be able to embed media from other sources (despite it potentially not working natively for mobile platforms if I'm not mistaken?), which got me thinking: it'd be nice to have some sort of preference list of image/video hosting hosts that users can add to or remove from, and uploading directly from the comment/create post view would use the first working file hosting domain from the list.. Just spitballing here.
The upload function is mainly meant for images, like others said its better to use external sites for video uploads. Integrating upload to those remote sites seems like a lot of work for little benefit though.
Torrents should be used, as it entirely solves the static data distribution problem, and keeps servers from having to shoulder potentially enormous hosting costs.
I've even added a lot of torrent-support related features to lemmy-ui and jerboa, that will come in 1.0
Communities should be more unified across servers, especially for niche ones. I want to see an active Metroid community, I don't give a crap what instance is hosting it (or if it's a mostly-opaque medley of instances) so long as I'm federated with it. This is probably the biggest UX misunderstanding new users have.
This should be among the first priorities. It would really help kick things off. Not only niche communities, but bigger ones as well. They represent topics of interest. I think I've seen a thing like macro community in one of the clients?! Could that be it?
Having distinct communities is a feature, not a bug. If two cities set up their own lemmy instances, say lemmy.sao_luis.br, and lemmy.lagos.ng, they can each have a news community, without them overlapping.
Do a search for metroid, and subscribe to whichever ones you like.
Look, this is just my take -- I think this is bad UX. I'm not saying federation isn't a good idea -- on the contrary, I like the idea that many different posts in the same community are all hosted on different instances. Sure, for a community like news it doesn't make as much sense -- fixes for this would be that some communities don't have the behaviour I'm suggesting, or the convention is to call it sao_luis_news or something.
When a instance goes permanently offline, does the content vanish? If so, could there possibly be a way for another instance to "adopt" the content on their instance so those posts aren't lost to time?
I think it might help reassure people to pick smaller instances.

If your instance was federated with it when it existed then your instance automatically has its own backup of it is as far as I understand things. I would like clarity on this however. My instance is a few days older than this account. Therefore the smaller instances that have already died are already duplicated locally here at sh.itjust.works. I can still view vlemmy, waveform.social, lemmy.film, (etc.) communities/posts as essentially an archive.

I'm not sure what point it would ultimately serve as with the host instance being offline nothing could federate out between us anyway.

Lemmy only loads content from the original instance where it was created, otherwise it would be possible to impersonate users. So it is not possible to load that.
Coming from Reddit I feel Lemmy could use a way to sort posts within communities by top posts within a time frame we choose. That without this feature gamers and gooners will default to reddit over Lemmy.

As far as a "personalized" one that isn't the communities you explicitly subscribed to, I don't think its really necessary, but it wouldn't be impossible to add (someone could probably come up with some good adjacent-community queries based on the most partipipated communities of users who you've liked comments and posts of. Make an issue for this on the lemmy github if you would like.

There is an issue for easier discovery of federated communities which is part of our roadmap. Piefed recently implemented a similar feature which we will take inspiration from. It also helps if you block communities that you dont want to see. Are there any other ideas you are thinking of?

More customization for site owners. I have an independent instance and there's a lot of things on there that are confusing for people unfamiliar with the fefiverse or lemmy. It would also be nice to remove the donation beg at the top. I know Lemmy needs funding, but it makes it look like I'm asking for donations.
The easiest solution would be to mention in the sidebar or in a welcome post that donations are not for you, but for the developers of the software. Also the frontend supports custom css so you can change the entire design. It is also possible to use a different frontend or write your own, as its all open source.
To be honest its quite bold of you asking to remove the donation buttons. Working on Lemmy has been our fulltime job for the past years, and we rely on user donations to pay for food and rent. Yet you are getting the results of our work entirely for free. Having some donation links is a very small price for that.
Indeed it is a big ask, however, It would be something I'd be willing to pay for. Many foss projects make money from paying customers as well as donations. I also mention and explain what lemmy is and encourage people to check it out in the getting started area of the site.
How much would you be willing to pay for this? Im not sure if its worth the effort because its not clear if anyone else besides you would be interested, and it would require a bunch of work to setup. I guess I wasn't thinking about how much work it would actually be in order to enforce it. I doubt I could afford the cost. Maybe if it was coupled with a managed services type of deal and you had enough subsrcibers it could be enough to hire another staff member? No worries that's what the AMA is for. I thought about managed hosting before, but it would likely involve mainly support and sysadmin work, while my passion is programming.
You could always outsource and automate the basic troubleshooting aspects. Running updates accross multiple customers would be a breeze. I beleive I've seen one managed services company that will set up an instance and manage it for around $20/mo.
That would mean hiring someone, which requires initial funding like a bank loan. It is also necessary to get the funding and skill to setup a website, automate the hosting and most importantly run a marketing campaign. Otherwise no one will know about the service nor use it. So it requires setting up a whole business, do you know how to do that?
Do you have any plans to make it easier to manage the images stored in pictrs? One issue I have is that I used to proxy images, I no longer do that, but now I have like 300GB on backblaze doing nothing. In this post I outlined more precisely what I mean.

Do you plan to introduce some kind of post tags into Lemmy, preferably something that will behave like Hashtags on Mastodon and other activitypub platforms? I know that Lemmy has been embedding community name as a hashtag for a while now, though having tags that can be populated by users would help discovery greatly.
Well they don't have to show up as hashtags to users on Lemmy, they can show up as their own designated tags you add to the post on creation of editing. Just some form of post tags to indicate the category of a post (could even be specific to communities like subreddit flairs) but they would show up as hashtags on Mastodon, similar to how Lemmy already embeds a hashtag of the community into posts.

I live in Spain, the cost of living here is much cheaper than Germany or especially the United States. I also dont need luxuries, and have enough money saved to last for a while. If donations are not enough I could always work for some company, and spend less time on Lemmy.

From my perspective we need better Mod and Admin tools. Forum software has a lot of them but Lemmy is lacking in this department.

It shouldn't be too difficult. A move is essentially a cross-post but it keeps the OP as the poster (rather than the cross-poster). You'd then want to lock the original post, and either hide it or add a message directing people to the new post. That's all current forum software does.
The main question is how this can work in terms of federation. When creating a new post it directly references the community url. If the user and community are on different instances then the community instance cannot rewrite the post to reference a different community. So it would have to tell the post creator to (automatically) resubmit the post to the new community. Same for all comments, they would have to be recreated by the respective author's instance in the new post. Seems quite complex to implement.

I really don't get this. Why is editing user content with slur_filter or modifying URLs accepted but allowing mods/admins to change the NSFW toggle isn't? It also ignores that savvy-enough admins can edit user content with SQL queries.
I think slur filters, tracking param removals, and local link rewriting are acceptable, because (with the exception of the slur filter) they're non-moderation actions, and also applied uniformly regardless of who made them.

My view is that not adding this to the API will only encourage admins who want this to do it through less transparent means, like injecting fake activities into the sent_activity table. If the fediverse is to be adopted by the masses, the onboarding experience needs to change. A new user can't be presented with a choice of instances as part of signing up or at least the process of making the choice needs to dumbed down a lot. I don't know how or if this can be solved, I just know as someone involved in app development and UX that the current experience won't work.
My mother would not know how to handle this paragraph: "Lemmy.world is one node in a network of hundreds of Lemmy instances. Before you sign up here, take a moment to explore all the instances at lemmyverse.net. You may find an instance with a regional or topical emphasis that speaks to you! Don’t worry about being left out; Lemmy instances are interconnected so users from each instance can participate with communities on other instances."
For mass adoption it needs to be so simple that even non-techie older people can get through it without feeling like they might be doing something wrong.
You're welcome to improve the text. That said the site is in large part aimed at instance admins and technical people. For normal users it's better to link them directly to a specific instance.
I think they should stick to the "email provider" analogy. Whole paragraph should be something like:
The only thing you need to start interacting with the Fediverse is an account with one of the many providers, just like with email! Providers are freely available across the globe: pick one that suits your location or interests best! You can start browsing the content of nearly the entire Fediverse from whatever provider you choose. Don't worry, you can always create an account with a different provider later.
You could add a sentence or two about where to find sensible defaults or link an article that explains the more subtle things.
I think the emphasis on instances (and not naming them the more familiar providers) hinders adoption.

Not sure if this is the place for feature requests, but in the Jerboa app would it be possible to add a "upload image" button next to custom thumbnail field? Currently I upload the image in the body, then select the link from the post and put it in the custom thumbail field.
On desktop pasting an image in the custom thumbnail field is also not possible like in the post body.

Mentions and Emoji now federating out in source.content :wave:
Emoji and mentions have been sent out to followers since v4, but that wasn't reflected in the raw markdown content that we also send along. That has been remediated now, and this change improves nodebb-to-nodebb federation.
Video object type now parseable :tv:
NodeBB is now able to ingest Peertube Video objects, and render then in a topic just like other pieces of content. Thanks @deadsuperhero@forum.wedistribute.org for prodding me to get this sorted out!
@silverpill@mitra.social ironically we do add that class in NodeBB, but we explicitly strip out all custom class names because there's no guarantee that recipients would know how to handle it.
Since a .mention has no standardized meaning, I opted to remove it for federated content.
Also mentions can be detected in content as they're explicitly defined in the payload.
Well, depending on a class from a 3rd-party is not the best way to go about it. Anyway, the server should reconstruct the html and add the appropriate .mention class based on any existing Mention links from the ActivityPub object.
@julian Is Video support limited to just Peertube videos? Asking this because, a video post on threads renders properly on mastodon and kokonnect(misskey fork) but only the text is displayed and not the video on my nodeb instance running 4.1.0. The post is threads.net/@b4htech/post/DGmU…

Ich habe ein bisschen Buch geschrieben! Ein Kapitel über „IndieWeb und Fediverse“ im Fachbuch „WordPress 6 - Das umfassende Handbuch“, erschienen im [url=https://bonn.social/@rheinwerkverlag]@rheinwerkverlag[/url], um genau zu sein. Im November 2023 fragt
Im November 2023 fragten mich @florian und @simon, ob ich Zeit und Lust hätte, ein Kapitel über das IndieWeb zu ihrem Buchprojekt beizusteuern.
Und da spätestens seit dem Studium der Plan, ein Buch zu schreiben, auf meiner „Big 5 for Life“-Liste steht, habe ich ohne groß darüber nachzudenken zugesagt.
Ich hatte 2007 so viel Spaß und Motivation beim Bloggen. Dazu kamen die Arbeit an meiner Bachelor-Thesis und ein paar Jahre später mein erster Artikel sowie eine fortlaufende Kolumne in einem Print-Magazin, dass ich mir gut vorstellen konnte, auch mal ein Buch zu schreiben. Zu der Zeit hatte ich auch bereits Kontakt zu Galileo Press (heute Rheinwerk-Verlag), die mich wegen eines Buchprojekts angefragt hatten. Damals standen die Themen „Web Accessibility“, „jQuery“ und „WordPress (evtl.)“ zur Debatte. Microformats, mein damaliges Steckenpferd, wurden leider als „nicht unbedingt […] „ergiebig“ genug“ für ein Buchthema angesehen. 🙂
Jetzt, nachdem ich die 30 Seiten für das Kapitel über „IndieWeb und Fediverse“ geschrieben habe, bin ich froh, klein angefangen zu haben. Ich habe unterschätzt, wie viel Arbeit das ist, aber auch gemerkt, wie viel Spaß es macht! Außerdem war es die perfekte Themenkombination!
Ich hoffe, dass Flo und Simon (und der Rheinwerk-Verlag) mich vielleicht auch eine Überarbeitung für das WordPress-7-Buch (und 8, 9, 10, …) schreiben lassen. Und wer weiß – vielleicht klappt es ja irgendwann doch noch mit einem ganzen Buch. 😉

George washington, franklin, jefferson, madison, all the founders were slave-owning colonizers who explicitly modelled their country after ancient Rome.

Separately, these implementors are (or have signalled interest in) implementing conversational backfill:
context resolves to an OrderedCollection containing activities
Outgoing conversational backfill is tested and working (against Mitra)
What's Next
This thread will likely contain updates and discussion from related parties about their implementations and what they wish to do next. In the cruelest irony of ironies, because conversational backfill is not ubiquitous yet, you will need to "View Original URL" in order to see all of the replies.
The ForumWG will meet again on 6 March 13h00 EST where all of this will be discussed, as well as planning out the future focus items for the ForumWG.

Knapp 17 Jahre nach der ersten und fast 14 Jahre nach der letzten Episode des OpenWebPodcasts darf ich wieder mit Gästen über das Fediverse, das IndieWeb, das OpenWeb im Allgemeinen und diesmal speziell (aber nicht zwingend) im Kontext von WordPress sprechen.
Same Same But Different: Der Titel ist erschreckend ähnlich (obwohl ich damit nichts zu tun hatte und Bob den OpenWebPodcast nicht einmal kannte), die Themen sind auch gleich (ich bin leider inselbegabt) mit dem neuen Fokus auf WordPress und auch bei den Gästen wird es vielleicht Überschneidungen geben.
Was wirklich neu ist: Der Podcast ist auf Englisch – und genau davor hatte/habe ich bisher den größten Respekt.
Die erste Episode ist schon „im Kasten“ und sollte in den nächsten zwei Wochen live gehen (ich glaube es wird sogar ein Video geben). Ein riesiges Dankeschön vor allem an @alex, dass er als mein erster Gast das Versuchskaninchen gespielt hat ☺️
(wobei ich mir nicht mehr ganz sicher bin, ob ich das vorher wirklich erwähnt hatte… 🤔)

NodeBB used to guard against this by ordering all received items by chronological order, but I realized that while this worked 99%+ of the time, there are some fun (ahem...) individuals who send objects with timestamps way in the future.
Personally I think removing the sorting just to fix one edge case was premature. At the same time, I think specifying that the OrderedCollection be sorted in chronological order should be a requirement.
shouldn't the order basically be "whatever the owner gives you"? i can see there being a SHOULD on forward-chron maybe but it's also possible for reverse chron, order of acknowledgement, or anything else. by default Adding to a collection might append a thing to either end of it. probably the simplest thing is the latest inserted item becomes the first, and the previous list becomes the rest. Reordering of collections, sorting of collections, etc is not possible
What we discussed on the call was "keep it simple" for implementors, which would be to have implementors order by forward chron.
End of the day since NodeBB is the one having trouble with the order I think it's on me to re-add re-ordering so other implementors can send in whatever order they want.
Are the future posts scheduled posts. Do they have a "scheduled" flag or something similar? Is timezone info included by default? Those are the two situations I can think of where this would occur with "timestamps in the future".

Den Social Web Devroom als Main-Track mit diversen längeren und kürzeren Vorträgen rund um das Thema Fediverse. Besonders spannend fand ich die Beiträge der beiden „Long-Former“-Kollegen @matt und @johnonolan, da die Implementierungen in WriteFreely und Ghost, der von WordPress am nächsten kommen.
Das Social Web BOF („Birds of a Feather“) bot eine Stunde voller kurzer (10-minütiger) Vorträge. Ich hatte mir zwar etwas anderes darunter vorgestellt, aber auch diese Präsentationen waren unterhaltsam und interessant.
Bei den Social Web After Hours im HSBXL Hackerspace hatte ich die Gelegenheit, meinen Vortrag über WordPress zu halten – worüber ich mich natürlich sehr gefreut habe. Aber ehrlich gesagt, hätte es mir auch gereicht, die Zeit mit Gleichgesinnten zu verbringen und ein Bier zu trinken. 😉
Es war überwältigend, so viele Menschen zu treffen, die sich mit dem gleichen Thema beschäftigen. Ich habe nicht oft die Gelegenheit, mit Gleichgesinnten zu fachsimpeln, und habe die kurze Zeit daher umso mehr genossen!
Weil die meisten Fediverse-Events hauptsächlich in den USA stattfinden, konnte ich viele, deren Wirken im Open Web ich schon lange online verfolge, zum ersten Mal persönlich treffen!
Die meiste Zeit hab ich mich gefühlt wie ein kleiner Junge, der das erste Mal mit den großen und coolen Kids spielen darf 😍!

I have a problem with this one because the first page doesn't have an id. I can adjust my code but the absence of id is unusual. For example, there is a next page (currently 404), and if we navigate to it, how prev would look like if the first page is anonymous?

Do you mean replies made by the context owner specifically? I think remote mid-level replies should not be required to have context (that would prevent non-implementing servers from participating).
Correct, or more specifically, at least for all replies coming from the instance that the context owner belongs to... so other sibling replies by users on that instance should also report that same context.

In fact they are absolutely correct, it is much easier to get started on Reddit. But what many forget is that Lemmy is not a corporation employing dozens of full-time designers, running A/B-tests and so on. Lemmy is an open source project run by volunteers, with only @dessalines and me working on it full-time. Neither of us is a particularly good designer, and our time is mainly spent working on the backend (database, federation, api), and preparing the upcoming 1.0 release.
If you see anything on join-lemmy.org or in the Lemmy UI itself that could be improved, the best option is to make that improvement yourself. Both of them use standard web technologies (nodejs, tailwindcss, inferno etc). The userbase here is quite technical so there are many of you able to contribute. We rarely reject any pull requests as long as they make a real improvement. Though it usually requires a little back and forth to review the changes and then address the review comments.

Additionally you can make changes to the texts for joinlemmy and lemmy-ui.
All this said, there have also been some suggestions to make onboarding easier by directing new users to a hardcoded default instance. This may sound like a good idea at first but won't work well in practice. Running such an instance would take significant time for administration and moderation, but we maintainers are already too busy. Besides it would be impossible to reach an agreement who this default instance should federate with or how exactly it should be moderated. So if you want to get nontechnical users to Lemmy, the solution is to link them directly to a specific instance based on their interests.

What about having an "easy on-ramp" instance where you get registered for one month with a hard-exit (auto-migrate to other instance, perhaps using some kind of federated-auth/token system for the migration, and forced password-setup on first use of the new instance). At any point during on-ramp the user could configure destination-instance from a list in the settings (or configure auto-export for manual import to any other "auto-migrate-unsupported" instance), with optional early-migration if the user has decided before the end of the month. Optionally a recommendation engine could iteratively curate a list of suggested instances based on usage during on-ramp (admins of those instances could provide - limited number of - tags of their choosing for the engine to use for matching). That part could be opt-in because probably a lot of users would find it creepy. The UX would need to be very user-friendly "pointy clicky" because that would be the overwhelming target demographic of such an ins... mostra di più

I think "on-boarding and educating" is better than "gatekeeping" (which feels like the "if you need to ask the price you can't afford it" shopping trope). That would take a significant amount of work to implement, and we dont have the resources for it. But all the code is open source, so youre welcome to give it a try yourself.

A quick update for people at #FOSDEM who are interested in the Fediverse. There are three main public events: the Social Web Devroom is a main track in room ua2118 from 3pm to 7pm Sat Feb 1. The Social Web BOF (“birds of a feather”) is on Sunday Feb 2 from 12pm to 1pm in . Finally, Social Web After Hours is on Sunday Feb 2 from 7pm to 9pm at HSBXL. And use the #SocialWebFOSDEM hashtag to track the community on the Fediverse!

On the first day I was also convinced that I wouldn't put myself through that again, although the offdem was quite an experience. But Sunday was just great. So many Fedi people in one place, I sat in the restaurant for hours and had great conversations. Thanks to all ! Great time, great people.

The Social Web developer community came together in person for the first time in a while, and it was remarkably fruitful.

The Social Web BOF was not recorded in video, but most of the talks have published slides. Benjamin Bellamy of Castopod also thoughtfully recorded audio for the talks, so I will try to slice them up into listenable chunks, one for each talk. The BOF talks were some of my favourites, so I’m looking forward to getting these released.
Finally, the Social Web After Hours event was not recorded at all, but some of the presenters have released their slides. Julian Lam’s talk, “The Fediverse is Quiet“, was re-recorded for you to view. This event was a great way to end the weekend, with a much more casual and intimate vibe than the lecture rooms at ULB. A fun time.

I can't say yet, as we're still adding things. If you're not using lemmy-js-client, then as long as your types are generated from it's main branch directly, then you should be fine.
I'm not using the js-client. I'm updating pythorhead so I need to make sure the API is at the final version before I can match it. And to match it I need the patches to be in so I can read the doc, and/or import the swagger.

The final api version would probably be in 1.0-beta.0, which will still take a few months. But at this time you can already start to adapt for the major changes like combined endpoints, and give feedback if anything else in the api needs changing.

I really want to find something in-between Mastodon and WordPress, but it's hard to find turnkey solutions for hosts. For instance, I host at www.mythic-beasts.com (they are a great host, IMHO), and they have a turnkey WordPress install.

This sounds like a very interesting idea. I agree that Yacy doesnt work, when I checked it out years ago it was a completely bloated mess. Not sure how viable how your idea is, because Im not familiar with webrings, and not sure how the federation will work. Anyway the main challenge for this project will be to actually give useful search results, both early on when there are very few crawlers, and also later once spammers try to abuse it.
Mainly SEO spam with text copied from other sites and lots of ads/referral links to make the owner a profit. But after thinking about it more, those would be rather easy to filter based on ad code in the HTML.
A much bigger challenge will be the ranking of search results. When searching for a term and there are 100 pages in the index that contain it, which of these pages should be shown first? Google developed the Pagerank when they started out, so that might be a good starting point to research further.

The Social Web Foundation is pleased to announce the Social Web Devroom at FOSDEM 2025, and invite participants to submit proposals for talks for the event.
FOSDEM is an exciting free and open source software event in Brussels, Belgium that brings together thousands of enthusiasts from around the world. The event spans the weekend of February 1-2, 2025 and features discussion tracks (“devrooms”) for over 140 different technology topics.
The Social Web Devroom will take place in the afternoon of Saturday, February 1.

There will be two available talk formats:
25 minutes – for bigger projects, followed by 5 minutes of questions.
8 minutes – lightning talks on smaller or newer projects, in groups of 3, followed by 6 minutes of combined questions for the group.

Lydic talks about the dizzying changes that are happening in social media these days. Internet users over the last decade have gotten used to a small number of huge social platforms. But political changes, content policy issues, and legal platform shutdowns have upended that formerly stable structure. People can no longer count on their friends, family, colleagues and neighbours all being on the same social networking system, much less news outlets, politicians, and celebrities. So they’re racing around, trying new applications (including, as Lydic notes, the awesome Pixelfed), and seeking a place to be social again.
Why should anyone have to do this? After all, you and I didn’t change our political outlook or our content policies or our legal ownership structure. We have governments and companies changing all around us that interfere with how we can interact with the people that matter most to us. Regardless of how you feel about these changes, why do everyday users have to be the ones to scramble to adapt?
The Fediverse is based on the simple belief that your social connections and your published content are yours. They belong to you. You should get to decide where to set up your home on the social web, based on your own priorities — technical, political, financial, romantic, whatever. And once you have that place on the social web, you can connect to anybody else, on any Fediverse platform, as easily as if they were on your own.
So when your friends are all trying a new Fediverse-enabled app from the app store, you can follow them from your own Fediverse home, see what they’re posting, like, comment, and share. You don’t have to scramble to install yet another application, go through the complicated signup flow, set up your profile, and alert everyone you know about yet another identity you have. You can stay put, keep all your current connections, but still stay connected to your restless friends and bleeding-edge influencers.
And if you get tired of the place you’ve set up your Fediverse home, you can move completely — taking all your social connections (and, soon, all your content) to the new platform you’ve chosen. You won’t have to make a series of announcements, like Lydic does, about all the different places your Internet presence is scattered. It’s handled automatically by the Fediverse platforms. Your followers, family and friends might not even notice the difference.
Social media is fun; we get it. And there’s nothing wrong with trying new apps. Being a pioneer on the cool new platform is invigorating. But if it’s not fun, and you’re feeling the whiplash of multiple platforms rising and falling weekly, please consider setting up your long-term homebase on a Fediverse-enabled platform. You might be surprised how many platforms are already Fediverse-enabled, and more are coming online every day.
On Monday, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced a new content policy for Meta on Threads. We are disappointed in these changes, which put vulnerable people on and off Meta platforms in harm’s way for harassment. Ideas matter, and history shows that online misinformation and harassment can lead to violence in the real world. There are good analyses of the details of the policy changes at EFF, The Verge, and Platformer.
Meta is one of many ActivityPub implementers and a supporter of the Social Web Foundation. We strongly encourage Meta’s executive and content teams to come back in line with best practices of a zero harm social media ecosystem. Reconsidering this policy change would preserve the crucial distinction between political differences of opinion and dehumanizing harassment. The SWF is available to discuss Meta’s content moderation policies and processes to make them more humane and responsible.
Distributed Moderation
What do these changes mean for the Fediverse? Through ActivityPub, Meta’s Threads network is connected to the social web, also called the Fediverse. This is a diverse network of independent social services using different codebases and different kinds of content. The network of 300M users of Threads can follow and be followed by people in tens of thousands of other communities. These services are operated by a variety of entities: corporations, universities, enterprise IT, cooperatives, non-profit organizations, and self-organized volunteers.
Theoretically, this distributed structure allows people to make choices about which platforms they want to use – based not only on technical features, but also on community composition and moderation policies. Users don’t need to give up on social connections they already have with friends and family; they can stay connected across services using ActivityPub. Different communities and services can have different content policies, but people in different communities can still stay connected.
Ideally, having an account on a Fediverse service gives people the best of both worlds: they can stay connected to users and content they like, and filter out content and users that they don’t. When unwanted content from one community lands in the feeds of people in other communities, the receiving users or their moderators can react under their own local policy: removing individual text or image posts; blocking individual users; or blocking the entire sending community.
Practically, though, there are limitations to this flexibility. Filtering on the receiving side requires orders of magnitude more effort. If a single sending service delivers bad content to users on one hundred or one thousand receiving services, each moderator on the receiving end has to clean up the mess locally. Moderators get understandably frustrated with this kind of displacement of responsibility. A common response is to block servers that send bad content entirely.
In the case of Threads, though, there are complicating factors. Threads is much, much bigger than the typical Fediverse community, and it has many high-profile users in politics, media and technology. It’s also an easy onboarding service to the Fediverse for people who are used to Facebook or Instagram, meaning many of our friends, colleagues and family use it. Blocking the Threads service means blocking access for all users on the receiving service from all these important accounts.
Unfortunately, there’s not an easy answer for Fediverse moderators. We encourage trust and safety teams across the social web to use their best judgement and the tools available to keep users safe, connected, and informed, and also to minimize moderators’ stress and burnout. IFTAS Connect is a great community resource for connecting with other moderators to discuss these tradeoffs.
Improving Social Web Resilience
We see the challenge of a large service that has poor local content policy as a chance to strengthen the social and technical infrastructure of the Fediverse. None of these options will resolve current problems immediately, but we hope starting the research now will make the Fediverse more resilient in the future.
Finer-grained filtering tools. As mentioned above, moderators on the Fediverse can automatically filter content by author or by originating service. Some platforms also let moderators filter by keywords – for example, blocking out racist or homophobic slurs. More difficult forms of filtering, such as detecting unacceptable images, or the subtle meaning of text, requires more sophisticated algorithmic filtering not supported by many Fediverse platforms. Balancing the ease of use of this kind of filter with the desire from many communities to have final control by human moderators is a good area for future research.
Collaborative moderation tools. Email filtering systems re-use signals received from other users, so that if a message is marked as spam by one user, or a few users, other users will never see the message. This can balance the desire for human moderation with a significantly lowered total effort for moderators. Shared server blocklists are somewhat common on the Fediverse, but deeper per-user and per-post collaborative filtering is not. Balancing, once again, the specific priorities of a given community with the advantage of collaborative filtering would also require further research.
Fact-checking and community notes. One major part of the Meta announcement was a cancellation of the fact-checking program for posts on Meta, and its replacement with a community notes feature, which defers fact-checking to volunteers. Neither of these features (professional and volunteer fact-checking) are supported directly in ActivityPub. We think there’s a place for a variety of fact-checking services on the Fediverse, providing annotations on Fediverse content without requiring permissions from the author, the sending service, or even the receiving service. Building the protocol features and reference implementations, as well as encouraging the participation of fact-checking services, is a good next step in this area.
Jurisdictional boundaries. Zuckerberg mentions in his update that Meta will be collaborating with the US government to resist demands for content policy changes by other governments. Regardless of the valence of these content policy demands, this question highlights an important feature of the Fediverse, namely, that federated services can operate within specific jurisdictions and conform with their regulations. Content that is conveyed across legal boundaries between services can be more clearly filtered or blocked to comply with local rules. We encourage national and regional governments to further investigate this structure for social networking and global connectivity.
Data portability. Choosing a social media platform to use is an important freedom in the social web. The Fediverse supports limited data portability, such that users can move their followers and followed accounts to a new server almost seamlessly. However, this move leaves all posted content, like text and images, on the old server, as well as metadata such as likes and shares. The new LOLA protocol would allow a full move between servers. We want to see more work on implementing LOLA in Fediverse platforms.
Ultimately, the safety and well-being of people around the world should not be in the hands of any single company. Moderation policies are a competitive advantage in an open social network. We continue to encourage the use of ActivityPub, and the distributed control that it brings.

I've seen discussions where the topic was something like "Where did you travel to that you would never go back to again", and the responses there heavily implied that travel can inspire racism.
I think Twain here is referring to travel less as tourism, ie short vacations, but more about spending time living in different countries and getting to know people and their culture, making friends, etc.

Applied to reality though, in our day and age your results may vary. It is completely possible to travel and learn nothing that would open people's minds especially when the traveling keeps itself within tourist zones and resorts designed to just give you a change of landscape and an illusion of cultural flavor.
You need to purposefully step away from that sort of thing and actually engage with the culture to get the benefits of the quote.

Come on, it's just marketing. They're preserved until they're not. Anybody up for some unreal tournament, warcraft 2, or colin mcrae rally? I find it hilarious that the comment replies on this forbes.com article, are way farther left and more aware of the US's hypocrisies than the average liberal lemmy server commenters.
The article was also just the standard orientalist "our open transparent freedom-loving democracy" vs "their authoritarian 1984 surveillance regime", with an emphasis on "protecting our youths from the evil commies". Not a shred of self reflection after the US just committed the thing they're accusing China of doing.

Its such a weird expression right, i wonder where it originates from. There is a non zero chance that its related to europeans famously being allergic to taking showers, thus "washing" is seen as a bad thing.
I've always heard it in the context of manchurian candidate 1950s-era mind control shenanigans, but it seems to predate that. Wouldn't surprise me if it has to do with westerners historically hating washing.

SWCC was formulated as a set of ideas, strategies, tactics, and after the overthrow of the gang of four in the late 1970s, learning from the lessons of the ultraleft turn of the cultural revolution. Most other countries don't have that experience, and weren't able to learn those lessons. SWCC also underwent a lot of changes after the overthrow of the eastern bloc, trying to not repeat the same mistakes the USSR made (a great topic, but too long to go into here).
The best longer book I've read (only about 70% done now) which goes over all the thinking and strategies behind SWCC, is Jin Huiming - Marxism and Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, but here are some good introductory articles that go over SWCC:

Productive forces were not organized for capital gain and private enrichment; public ownership of the means of production supplanted private ownership. It was illegal to hire others and accumulate personal wealth from their labor.
Had the 2nd fastest growing economy of the 20th century after Japan. The USSR started out at the same level of economic development and population as Brazil in 1920, which makes comparisons to the US, an already industrialized country by the 1920s, even more spectacular.
Combatted sex inequality. Equal wages for men and women mandated by law, but sex inequality, although not as pronounced as under capitalism, was perpetuated in social roles. Very important lesson to learn.
Housing was socialized by localized community organizations, and there was virtually no homelessness. Houses were often shared by two families throughout the 20s and 30s – so unlike capitalism, there were no empty houses, but the houses were very full. In the 40s there was the war, and in the 50s there were a number of orphans from the war. The mass housing projects began in the 60s, they were completed in the 70s, and by the 70s, there were homeless people, but they often had genuine issues with mental health.
When it is claimed that a system works, we should ask, who it works for. Capitalism benefits a tiny number of rapacious capitalists, to the detriment of the rest of us, while Socialism works for the masses.
Now let's take a look at what happens after the USSR collapsed, and what came with capitalist privatization:
Except countries that have existing socialism aren't doing that. In fact, China very openly says that their system is a product of their history, culture, and material conditions. Unlike western libs, they're not trying to franchise and remodel other countries into their own image. Neither does Cuba or Vietnam last I checked.
This is also why the CPC names their system Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. They want a multi-polar world, where hundreds of different socialisms can bloom on their own without fear of intervention, and especially being attacked by the US:
"Socialism with [insert any country here] characteristics"
Would be pretty wonderful, they could be as far along as the PRC, but in the western hemisphere. The US could never tolerate the threat of a good example so close to its borders though of course.

Of course they have much more resources to polish the new user experience, and also have an actual marketing budget. Plus in practice its completely centralized, they dont need to worry about all the difficulties that federation brings. Its only natural that they are more successful than Mastodon in the short term. But sooner or later they will also have problems when the Bluesky admins make decisions that the community doesnt like, and then there may be another migration wave to the Fediverse.
For the same reasons mentioned above, Lemmy cant become as easy as Bluesky. But the more contributors and donors we have, the closer we can get.

in reply to Itte • • •It shows only that like most open source tools, US media institutes a general conspiracy of silence about platforms like the fediverse, and mastodon (or lemmy). Not because they're not user-friendly enough, but because ultimately it's not something the US can control. Bluesky is really just a rebranded twitter, founded by the same people, but with owners more friendly to the US democratic party, as opposed to musk who is more friendly to republicans. Both are US corporations subject to its laws and beholden to push pro-US foreign policy lines.
I hope most of the world will choose to escape all these monopolistic US-controlled platforms, and for countries to fund open source, and encourage their own citizens to use community-run alternatives.
Lemmy won't become bluesky, because we're a community/topic-focused link aggregator, not a person-focused microblogging platform.

Also my little pet feature: keyboard navigation. Back on that other site, before the redesign, there was incredible keyboard navigation thanks to the Enhancement Suite. j/k to navigate up/down through comments. Enter to collapse. a/z to up/downvote. Etc. It's a delight to use, and is a big part of the reason I could never move to the redesign, before I came over here. Not having that is a big drawback IMO.

edit 2: I was just reminded of another example of the lemmy-ui vs Jerboa confusion, as well as another example of well-intentioned by ultimately anti-patternesque transformation of user text: how user and Community mentions are handled.
@nutomic@lemmy.ml will not be a hyperlink for viewers in lemmy-ui, but /u/nutomic@lemmy.ml will be...despite the latter being generally not the preferred way to do it. lemmy-ui also does this awkward thing where if you use the autofill suggestions when typing a name, it wraps them in a hard-instanced URL instead of the better UX of taking someone to their profile on your instance: @dessalines@lemmy.ml.
Communities are even weirder. Allowing the autofill of !announcements@lemmy.ml will create a hard-instanced URL (
[!community@domain](https://domain/c/community)), but then the parser ignores this and creates a URL to the user's instance. If, instead, URLs went where the user's text input says they go, but the autofill would default to naked Community mentions such as !announcements@lemmy.ml, this would be a much better experience.Meanwhile, Jerboa doesn't have an autofill capability for users or Communities. Users who are mentioned with /u/ are not linked, while users who are linked with @ get a link that is handled within the user's instance, regardless of whether it's a hard-instanced link or a naked mention. Communities are also always handled within the user's instance.

I only work on the backend, lemmy-ui and other frontends could definitely use more contributors to work on these things. Im not familiar with all the different apps but they are probably missing many features that already exist in the backend. That said subscribing to blocklists and allowlists seems a bit risky, as you can end up with most instances subscribing to the same list, giving the creator a lot of power. I believe Mastodon or Twitter had some drama like that. Anyway this could be implemented with the API.
Practically finished, you can already start developing plugins.
Lemmy is not a company with a boss ordering the workers what to do. Everyone including me and Dessalines are volunteers, and chooses for himself what he wants to work on. As its all open source its not really competition, more users on NodeBB is also good for Lemmy as it means more user choice and activity.
One reason Im working on Ibis is because I waited for a long time for someone to start a federated wiki project. Its a major thing thats missing from the Fediverse. As no one else did, I have to do it myself. The other reason is to have something different that Lemmy to code on. Working on Lemmy can be quite exhausting because the project is already very mature, so every new change needs to pass tests, be approved by other maintainers and work with the existing features. Ibis is still in early stages and under my control alone, so I can do whatever I want.

There are open issues for these, but developer time is very limited so we need to set priorities.

Unknown parent • • •This is all a matter of dev resources. If we had maybe 6 full-time devs, we could handle things like backwards compatibility.
People forget that lemmy, like other open source hobby projects, don't have the resources that large corporations do. People understandably get frustrated when there's breaking changes, but they also need to not put enterprise-level expectations on a small number of people.
If someone wanted to work on that, of course we wouldn't be opposed, but you should know how monumental a task that would be.

Lemmy didnt have a single breaking change since version 0.19 which was released 1 year and 4 months ago. And the breaking changes in that version were quite minor. Before that was 0.18, 1 year and 6 months earlier. That version only removed websockets, so most third-party app devs who used the HTTP API didnt notice any difference. Meaning the API has been almost unchanged for over three years which is quite long for a project that hasnt reached a stable version yet. 1.0 includes all the breaking changes that were held back over the years, so that we dont need any more breaking changes for a long time.

@nutomic recently added Donation dialogs, which adds support for wikipedia-style banners (which are annoying, but they work). I think most of lemmy's problems could be solved if we were able to add a few more full time devs. We currently don't even have a single dev funded.

When posting, I tend to avoid uploading media larger than like, 5MB, just cause I know that the cost of storing said media can get exorbitant very quickly and I wouldn't want to be part of the burden.. I'm not able to donate just yet. Knowing this, I am currently on the fence on whether I should create a "gaming clips" community.
That said, it's nice to be able to embed media from other sources (despite it potentially not working natively for mobile platforms if I'm not mistaken?), which got me thinking: it'd be nice to have some sort of preference list of image/video hosting hosts that users can add to or remove from, and uploading directly from the comment/create post view would use the first working file hosting domain from the list.. Just spitballing here.

Torrents should be used, as it entirely solves the static data distribution problem, and keeps servers from having to shoulder potentially enormous hosting costs.
I've even added a lot of torrent-support related features to lemmy-ui and jerboa, that will come in 1.0

I think it might help reassure people to pick smaller instances.

The best option is just to create another community on a living server, and link to the local version of a dead one in a sidebar.

If your instance was federated with it when it existed then your instance automatically has its own backup of it is as far as I understand things. I would like clarity on this however. My instance is a few days older than this account. Therefore the smaller instances that have already died are already duplicated locally here at sh.itjust.works. I can still view vlemmy, waveform.social, lemmy.film, (etc.) communities/posts as essentially an archive.
What I'd like to know is if I linked a sh.itjust.works link to one of those threads could a user of a more recent instance load the content?
I'm not sure what point it would ultimately serve as with the host instance being offline nothing could federate out between us anyway.

Lemmy only loads content from the original instance where it was created, otherwise it would be possible to impersonate users. So it is not possible to load that.

As far as a "personalized" one that isn't the communities you explicitly subscribed to, I don't think its really necessary, but it wouldn't be impossible to add (someone could probably come up with some good adjacent-community queries based on the most partipipated communities of users who you've liked comments and posts of. Make an issue for this on the lemmy github if you would like.

There is an issue for easier discovery of federated communities which is part of our roadmap. Piefed recently implemented a similar feature which we will take inspiration from. It also helps if you block communities that you dont want to see. Are there any other ideas you are thinking of?

in reply to GrumpyDuckling • • •The easiest solution would be to mention in the sidebar or in a welcome post that donations are not for you, but for the developers of the software. Also the frontend supports custom css so you can change the entire design. It is also possible to use a different frontend or write your own, as its all open source.
To be honest its quite bold of you asking to remove the donation buttons. Working on Lemmy has been our fulltime job for the past years, and we rely on user donations to pay for food and rent. Yet you are getting the results of our work entirely for free. Having some donation links is a very small price for that.

Do you guys have plans to add a spoiler tag? I post a lot of memes about tv shows that I watch, but the users complain that the post isn't blurred.
I know I can use the NSFW tag, but this gives the wrong idea and limits the post visibility (since people can hide nsfw posts).

The only thing that concerns me about handling spoilers is how the third party apps handle them. Do you think it would be a good idea to also blur the entire image (not only the thumbnail) and remove the blur only when the user clicks the image?

in reply to Nutomic • • •From my perspective we need better Mod and Admin tools. Forum software has a lot of them but Lemmy is lacking in this department.
The key important one is being able to move posts to different communities. You'll often get reports of posts not being appropriate for a community but there is no way to actually move it.

This post makes some good points about reports federating (being worked on, I believe) but also about the lack of what we'll call a "moderation panel" where you can access tools for the community, like seeing a list of banned users and being able to add to it there or unban someone.
There are other "nice to have" tools like post approval
I am curious to see what moderation tools PieFed, has and NodeBB now they are federated, but the documentation is skimpy on that front.

We also can't rewrite history in the fediverse (unlike a forum) so "moving" a post would also entail deleting and recreating content other people made.
These ones sound really strange, but its similar, I don't want mods to be able to rewrite user history or move it.
We don't store IPs so that'd be impossible.

in reply to flamingos-cant (hopepunk arc) • • •I think slur filters, tracking param removals, and local link rewriting are acceptable, because (with the exception of the slur filter) they're non-moderation actions, and also applied uniformly regardless of who made them.
That's unavoidable of course, anyone with DB access ultimately can edit things. But if people catch on, I doubt your server would gain many users or last that long. Most importantly, we shouldn't allow that to happen via the API.
You're free to start a "Should mods be able to edit user's data?" discussion, but I doubt it would get much support, especially from reddit allowing this and it souring everyone to it.

sent_activitytable. Most admins are reasonable people, and have good relations with their users, so if admins explained themselves then I think most users would be pretty accepting.I mean there's been like 3 or 4 GitHub issues opened about this, so there's clearly some demand for it. Should I make a post in !lemmy@lemmy.ml? So users not on GitHub can chime in.

You can read through these issues related to modmail, but the short version is that it's way out of scope for us, and not something we have time to do. Replicating private group chats is better done by other services like matrix, or using a shared email inbox.
