I am sitting out on my back deck and a delivery drone flew over the neighbor behind me, landed, and took off again. It was quite large and clearly left without the payload it was carrying. What was most surprising is that it was basically a vtol - it had wings and flew like a plane till it started hovering. That was a first for me.

I told my youngest about it, he found the service and is in the process of ordering something for delivery

@T2R if he orders something, I’m getting out my camera and recording it in 8k

Looking forward to it. I just watched a guy from 3yrs ago develop an RC V-22 Osprey from scratch. So the concept of a fixed wing VTOL aircraft interests me.
in reply to T2R

@T2R sadly, my camera only does 8k 30p, so I’m going to do 4k120p

Ok. So he ordered a few things, some candy and a star bucks frappachino. It’s making two trips, for a total sale of $9 with no delivery fee

if ARC Raiders taught me anything it’s to shoot at the rotors. Not sure if that would damage the loot though.

Ok. The drones just made two deliveries. That was super cool. I recorded it with my camera in stunning 4k120p, so now I just need to stabilize it and upload it to YouTube which should take about 9 hours given the 3rd world internet infrastructure out here.

have a drone pick up the SSD and drop it directly into the data center! Might be faster!

Before fiber came to my city, my internet used to be two bonded 10Mb DSL lines.

@T2R the only option I have (other than star link, I suppose) is Comcast. I have 1g down and 20m up* on a good day, when everyone else is out of town, and the wind is blowing in the direction of the head end

when uploads of a video of a drone delivering take longer than the drone delivering...

brings back memories of jokes about the bandwidth of a station wagon loaded up with 9 track tapes...

Can't wait for the skies of my neighborhood to buzz with hundreds of drones delivering coffee cups and candy bars to everybody, 24/7, so they can enjoy them during a quiet moment…

Oh, wait.

Google has been flying them here as the pilot area for years. They are not well loved at 7am on a Sunday when every dog in the neighbourhood loses their shit.

You got a visit from the Baba Yaga. Ukrainian vampire quadcopters can lift anything between 20-120kg. It is probably something like that.

It's all fun and games until these things develop critical failures in flight and crash into homes, cars, and people and/or set things on fire.

It used to be the case that we recognized that low altitude flight over heavily populated areas required a lot of careful government scrutiny for safety reasons.
