I certainly hope the EU can put the same sanctions on the US for attacking Venezuela as they did on Russia for attacking Ukraine. This is indefensible.

Piero Bosio reshared this.

pigs will evolve to grow wings and fly before that ever happens, as always rules for thee not ourselves. More like it will be how to form an alliance - "in the name of to stop a dictator or war on drugs" - definitely not for own corporations to have a chance of getting even a tiny piece of the pie afterwards...

We won't, the US is our biggest commercial partner and ally. The best we can hope from EU is silence, but more probably it will be excuses on why we will actually support them.

So far they have attacked ports, airports, military bases, the presidential palace, the legislative palace and some other areas.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

As long as the EU is not capable of defending itself and Ukraine from Russia, the US and Israel can do whatever they want.

Unlikely. They're not even reacting when the US is meddling in the EU itself.

Sanctions do not achieve desired results.

Having said that, the day the EU becomes strong enough to do this is the day they will have achieved real freedom and independence. The current EU leaders won't do this, because they are lapdogs for America. EU may vocally complain about US action, but they still ultimately serve US interests.

We have voted for the growth that has led us here: mastodon.social/@urlyman/11571… So politicians will follow that course.

Every European that wants to be less tied to US hegemony should do everything in their power to reduce their personal resource footprint and to vote at every opportunity for degrowth

This is Trump playing big-boy dictator. He thinks this makes him look strong to his daddy, Putin, but he just looks pathetic and he’s only ultimately helping China. in reply to Eugen Rochko

You do realize that Russia is bombing Ukrainian cities for almost 4 years since large-scale war started and many years before, do you? I’m not saying there shouldn’t be consequences for US for what they did. I’m just saying that comparison is ridiculous and gives nothing but few more excuses for Russian propaganda to continue doing what they’ve been doing
in reply to Alex Gordienko

How is what I said giving any excuses for Russian propaganda?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

not your words per se, the fact that things are compared and looked at as they are they same

I hope I didn’t offend you. My point is that these things are not equal. However, they both are horrible and require prosecution

Fuck Putin. Fuck Trump. Fuck dictatorship and falsification. Fuck war

in reply to Alex Gordienko

Russia's invasion of Ukraine also started with a supposed "military operation". It is the same playbook. Do you want me to wait until more Venezuelans are dead before condemning the act of international aggression?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

His point that they are not equivalent is true, maybe you believe that's unimportant. This is, as you understand, very serious stuff.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

what in my response made you think so? I’m just saying that comparison of two things is wrong

Nobody should die because of someone’s political or economic benefit. All the inter-state interventions and military operations must stop and never happen again

in reply to Eugen Rochko

They didn't do it when the US and Israel attacked Iran, so they won't do it here either.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I'm the last person to approve current actions of the US administration, but deeply disappointed with such a rage-bait take.

It is inhumane to compare suffering of millions of Ukrainians protecting their democratic country, with millions dead or injured, and tens of millions displaced, that endures everyday bombardment of critical infrastructure in the middle of the winter with targeted attack on military objects by US in Venezuela, a country that was already under EU sanction list

in reply to Eugen Rochko

Artme is correct. You can't compare Ukrania with Venezuela. The former one was a functional country before the invasion, the latter one has been a dictatorship for the last 25 years. This current Trump proposal is far from the ideal solution (I'm not a Trump sympathizer), but it's better than the status quo. Sign, a Venezuelan.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

Let's see now, Zelensky won an election that everybody agrees about was honest, whereas Maduro is a dictator holding thousands of people without trial who came to power in elections nobody claims were honest.
You can't lump both invasions together as the same thing. That is an insult to the Ukraine, and to Zelensky. I'm sure Putin loves to hear it.
in reply to Rob van KanπŸ”»

@edgeofeurope This is a wild take. How does it matter who won which elections? It is an invasion of a sovereign country. Who elected the US to enforce foreign elections? Do you understand the US just wants to claim Venezuelan oil and is following Putin's playbook to a letter?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Fine, both invasions are the same thing. Seed if I fucking care.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

foreign interference is always about ensuring compliance not democracy, despite the PR. we're fine with friendly dictatorships and always claim that there was corruption in the electoral system of any democracy that opposes US interests.

but sanctions, like war, should be decided at the UN.

one can hope, but give the absolute dependency that the EU still has towards the US, that will not happen. We need to first:
- bring back Digital sovereignty to EU (Linux and FOSS pretty much only option)
- economic sovereignty (ECB are doing good work on this with digital EUR, etc - but they need more support)
- energy sovereignty: we need to urgently transition to renewables
- military sovereignty (unfortunatly still needed. Not sure how long it will take even with the significant increases in spending that we're seeing now)

As an American, I regretfully agree with this. The actions of the US government with regards to Venezuela are illegal and extreme.
