It's official, the #Metaverse failed!
Meanwhile I don't even know 1 person who ever visited it π
Not one(!) after:
#Meta "...had funneled some $73 billion into Reality Labs. To put that into context, youβd have to spend $1 million per day for 200 years to match that kind of spending."

Well, there goes the metaverse! | TechCrunch
The metaverse is on its last legs as VR is eclipsed by AI. But that's not the only thing that went wrong for Meta's VR ambitions.Sarah Perez (TechCrunch)

Here is hoping @threads is somehow connected π

in reply to MadeInDex π°π • • •for several months the link between thread and Fediverse has been under "maintenance" without any guarantee that the link could continue one day.
Signals like this or the change from .net to .com do not bode well for the future. It's best not to expect thread to continue to be connected.

in reply to LillyLyle/Count Melancholia • • •@LillyHerself πππ 73 billion is just so much money, if you spent that on research you could probably cure diabetes & throw in another common disease for good measure π€― (good news recently on diabetes cure though, even without Meta help ;)
It sucks, but at least Marky Mark can hang out with his 5 "friends" (employees) in his own version of world of warcraft now π

in reply to MadeInDex π°π • • •Hypothetically, if I were a major shareholder in a company that spent $73 billion on a whim with absolutely nothing to show for it, I would be doing everything I could to replace the leadership...
It really highlights (yet again) how "boards represent the shareholders" is a pile of horseshit.

in reply to MadeInDex π°π • • •It's all funny-money though. Doesn't exist outside the circle of tech-bro companies that "invest".
Just like the current AI "investment": OpenAI invests $100bn in Nvidia who invests $100bn in Microsoft who invests $100bn in OpenAI. [paraphrased]
