As the UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance in 2019, Mark Carney described climate change as “the world’s greatest existential threat.”
As the governor of the Bank of England, he started the Net Zero Banking Alliance.
But now he's the prime minister of a petrostate.
"Oilsands production now accounts for 31 per cent of the total Canadian emissions. "

Mark Carney’s climate inaction is at odds with his awareness of climate change’s existential threat
Climate action no longer seems to be a priority for Prime Minister Mark Carney, despite his previous activism. This is bad news for Canadians and the climate. The Conversation

Eswar Prasad (FT) argues that by undermining global institutions that used to differentiate the US view of the global system from the Chinese perspective (however incomplete the actual differences) has strengthened China's position.
as he concludes:
'Even if Beijing is not winning the hearts of other countries, its vision of a world order is gaining ground because America, rather than providing a principled & attractive alternative, is beginning to look more like China'!
I suggest America is not looking more like China, but like America distilled.
* how many countries has China invaded / bombed ?
* in how many countries has China placed military bases?
* how many agreements / treaties has China unilaterally violated?
* how many partners has China betrayed?
* how does dealing with internal corruption compare with the USA? (key for investment confidence)
Some outside the West see China as reliable, even if they don't agree with its system.

The goal is to “harness clean energy” and to drive greenhouse gas emissions down by decarbonizing transportation, buildings and heavy industry, while boosting economic growth and addressing affordability concerns."

He’s also quietly laying the groundwork for a more comprehensive embrace of an electricity-first economy, one that’s already being built in places like China and Europe. He is, in other words, skating to where that infernal puck is going, even if he doesn’t want to say as much out loud just yet."
