The police story was when I worked in a bookshop, and someone tried to pay with an unsigned credit card.
I asked for a piece of signed ID, and he slammed his warrant card down on the desk and said, "how about this?!"
I, not getting the subtext, picked it up and scutinised it for several minutes, while a queue built up behind him and eventually said, "I'm so sorry, the only signature is the chief constable."
He turned crimson and paid with cash.
