I spent today mentoring a group of our junior engineers, something I love doing, but it was strange. I was a decade older (2 decades in one case) than anyone in the group. I had a weird feeling of displacement, inhabiting a role that, in my mind, has always belonged to other people.
Technical leadership isn't new to me. I'm used to sharing knowledge. But the pronounced age gap added a different energy, that gives me pause.

in reply to Brian Davis • • •I have got only 5 years left to retirement (if I make it). I don't feel like I have anything to offer junior engineers. I've never used Claude or GH CoPilot or LightLLM or whatever, and don't have any interest in them. I don't see any future in the industry at all, for anyone really. I try to keep my mouth shut at work to not spread my cynicism too much.
Everything that kept me inspired and interested in tech is long gone now.
