Venezuela and Maduro's fall brings people together in a way unseen before.

Financial Times quoting experts:

"Experts had warned that Venezuela's layered air-defence network could complicate US air operations. But it apparently presented little or no resistance to the US strike that captured President Nicolás Maduro."

Who could have known that the Russian-made air defense systems, which have been defeated numerous times in the last years alone by US and Israeli forces, could be so easily being defeated in Venezuela?

Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska is realizing what will happen, when the US get control over Venezuela's oil reserves:

"If our American "partners" get to the oil fields of Venezuela (and they have already reached the fields of Guyana), they will control more than half of the world's oil reserves. And, apparently, their plan is to ensure that the price of our oil does not rise above $50 per barrel."

in reply to Tendar

And Oleg, it is getting even worse for Russia. China might cope somehow, maybe even find common ground with the new government in Venezuela, together with the US, but Russia is absolutely screwed. Venezuela just needs to be unleashed and the oil price will run into the ground, if necessary below $30 per barrel.

Nicolás Maduro is expected to appear in a U.S. court by Monday evening, according to NBC News. After arriving in the U.S., he will reportedly be flown by helicopter to New York, processed, and transferred to a federal detention facility.

Outgoing US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene does not take Maduro's fall well. She is going ballistic, questioning the motives of the operation while accusing the Trump administration not acting in America's best interests.

"Americans disgust with our own government’s never ending military aggression and support of foreign wars is justified because we are forced to pay for it and both parties, Republicans and Democrats, always keep the Washington military machine funded and going.

in reply to Tendar

This is what many in MAGA thought they voted to end.

Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez declared Nicolás Maduro the country’s only legitimate president and demanded his and his wife’s immediate release, stating, “Venezuela will not be anyone’s colony.” This comes after Trump claimed she told the U.S. she was willing to do “whatever is necessary” to help Venezuela recover, because “she really has no other choice.”

Fewer things in bathrooms should have the hands free sensors. If you’re getting soap, you’re literally in the middle of washing your hands, the germs will come off. Most people getting paper towels also probably have clean hands. I’m tired of waving my hands around trying to get these things to work, bring back levers.

@Pam I've seen people handling soap dispensers before putting any water on them, so I think hand-free can be an improvement, but mainly if it becomes a foot pedal. But then you run into different accessibility issues.

Cato Institute on Trump's statements about Maduro

Justin Logan:

"President Trump's repeated claim, in prepared remarks, that the United States would now 'run Venezuela' 'until a safe, proper, and judicious transition' can take place was hopefully untrue. The American people did not sign up for a nation-building campaign in Venezuela. They haven't even been asked. The Secretary of War's claim that the attack was about 'the safety, security, freedom, and prosperity of the American people' strains credulity past the breaking point. "

I'd be curious to know if there is a trend you see with instances and accounts

in reply to webhat

I understand. We don’t block everyone that gets reported. There is a lot of attempts to “weaponize moderation” when there are petty disagreements. I do wish more people would just block each other. Obviously, report stuff that is inappropriate for the platform, though. So thank you.

I definitely do not and will not mine/analyze what accounts/instances people are blocking. That seems rather antithetical to the point of this place.

Today is the 6th anniversary of Qasem Soleimani death, the leader of the Iranian Quds forces. His vehicle was struck by an US missile in Baghdad, Iraq, 6 years ago.

It is also the 36th anniversary of Manuel Noriega's capture, the strongman of Panama. Coincidentally, also on charges of drug trafficking and more.

Maduro is in good company.

U.S. General Dan Kane confirmed that around 150 aircraft were involved in the Venezuela operation. He revealed that B-2 bombers were used, and U.S. airpower targeted Venezuelan air defenses to clear the way for special forces helicopters to capture Maduro. Several U.S. helicopters sustained damage but all returned safely. Trump gave the order at 10:46 PM on January 2.

Not a single US soldier died during the operation to extract Maduro, not even one piece of hardware was lost. One aerial vehicle, possibly a helicopter, was damaged, but all of them returned home.

Absolutely marvelous and professional operation by US forces.

Trump says US will „run“ Venezuela until „judicious transition“ following capture of Maduro.

President Zelensky shared early results from today’s talks with national security advisors from partner countries, saying Ukraine is advancing along three key tracks: security guarantees, reconstruction, and a solid framework for real, lasting peace.

He thanked allies from Europe, Canada, the EU, NATO, and the U.S. for their support, emphasizing that any outcome must be effective, dignified, and ensure peace for decades. Preparations are underway for follow-up meetings in Europe next week.

Ukraine is considering a nationwide referendum on a potential peace agreement. According to Speaker Stefanchuk, the ballot will include a single question: whether to support the deal or not. MP Arahamia added that the referendum could be held alongside presidential elections, with public debate on the draft expected to last around 60 days. A draft law may be ready by late February.

Trump has described the capture of Nicolás Maduro as a historic military operation, calling it a strike unseen since World War II. “It was a powerful assault on a fortified military complex in central Caracas to bring a criminal dictator to justice,” he said.

The mission, carried out in near-total darkness using advanced U.S. technologies, neutralized Venezuela’s military capabilities. “They were waiting for us, fully armed. They knew we had ships off their coast. But they were overrun, fast.”

Trump released a picture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, captured and allegedly on board of amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima.

President Trump just now:

"We are prepared for a second wave (attack against Venezuela), a much bigger attack, if we needed to do so."

“It’s time for freedom,” Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado declared. Calling on citizens inside the country to prepare for action and those abroad to mobilize global support, she said the opposition is ready to take power. “Venezuela will be free,” she vowed.

Trump has warned that a “second wave” of strikes on Venezuela is possible, adding that Maduro loyalists face “a grim future” if they continue to back him. Trump also confirmed that all U.S. aircraft returned safely, though one helicopter was seriously damaged. He defended the operation as necessary, citing staggering annual losses to drug-related violence.

Trump praised the U.S. operation that led to Nicolás Maduro’s capture, calling it an “incredible job.” He said the team trained relentlessly and executed a maneuver no other country could pull off. “I watched it like a TV show,” Trump said. “The speed, the power, it was stunning. No one else could’ve done what they did.”

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has commented on the situation in Venezuela, stating that Ukraine supports the right of all people to live free from dictatorship and oppression. He emphasized that Maduro’s regime violated fundamental rights and democratic norms, and reiterated Ukraine’s refusal to recognize his legitimacy. Sybiha called for developments to follow international law and support the Venezuelan people’s right to dignity and freedom.

In 2024 after the latest elections in Venezuela, the USA has recognized Edmundo González Urrutia as President of Venezuela. The Maduro regime rebuffed that statement.
