To be honest, it doesn’t look to me like Putin is actually preparing for a long war of attrition — quite the opposite, it looks like he’s taking a gamble, either because he believes he’s close to victory or because he’s trying to secure as large a land grab as possible before an unavoidable pause. Both scenarios are equally likely given the systemic cognitive biases within the Kremlin.

I think the primary benefit of yesterday’s #Russia fake about “attack on Putin’s residence” was to demonstrate that any security guarantees where “Ukraine’s attack on Russia” would be a voiding trigger are essentially void from the start.
Russia can stage such “attack” at any point and any moment, which is practically equivalent to Russia having the right to veto security guarantees by US and NATO in case of Russia’s attack, which they proposed in the past iterations of “peace plans”. Both proposals are, of course, absurd.
