@JP I do admit Windows is looking worse and to me who’s never used anything else in a desktop or laptop but I am also weary of jumping from the Microsoft ecosystem to the Valve ecosystem. It looks possible to me that Valve’s goodwill so far may be tied to the person of Gabe Newell, and that his inevitable departure will make Valve change course from their benevolent quasi-monopoly.
In particular, there are several unanswered questions for me about SteamOS: what about my Epic games (that I all got for free, but still), what about my itch.io games? GOG? I haven’t looked too much into it yet but I’m dreading either the curt answer (not possible on SteamOS), the convoluted answer (run 5-6 separate pieces of software to enable compatibility) or worse, an answer depending on each game.
i've only used it for one game so far but for Epic store stuff, heroicgameslauncher.com works well.

@Ji Fu (Domestic Terrorist) Nope, my regular use of Linux has always been headless, like on the server I rent for all my self-hosting. My parents have switched to Mint for their own computers, but I'm lagging behind because of the Windows-specific ties I spelled out earlier.
I mean, I've clicked on a few things on a Ubuntu Desktop, but it's never been a regular use and never on my own machines.

You can install other launchers, there are launchers available now that handle Epic, GOG, itch, etc. You don’t have to use Steam, even on the Steam Deck
It’ll be difficult for Valve to enshittify later when Gabe steps down because it’s all built on FOSS and forking away from the enshittification will be relatively easy
That’s the theory anyway ;)

@Gentleman Technologist @JP Thanks, it is somewhat reassuring, and seeing Valve invest in free software like Proton is heartwarming. It is central to their business strategy and it benefits everybody else as well.
However, the enshittification could come from turning SteamOS closed source and then changing Steam so that only the proprietary version could connect to it. That's in part what Facebook and Twitter did with their own platform, although they didn't start from free software.
@hypolite Really SteamOS is just a Linux distro, so the answer that is most of those will work via the right tools.
Heroic Launcher has support for Epic accounts. I don't have anything in Epic though, so I can't entirely verify there, just I know it officially supports it.
GOG is 100% DRM free, so no issues there. It Just Works™. (This is a great reminder of why people need to break free from those ecosystems regardless.) Windows stuff you just install normally into a prefix, but GOG also has Linux installers for some games that have official Linux versions.
And, of course, Steam itself can be run on practically any Linux distro in existence. There's even a flatpak version which I personally prefer.
I won't say it's all perfect, but for the most part stuff just works.
