An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and Nutomic work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. The only available option are user donations.
To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached we can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. We especially rely on recurring donations to secure the long-term development and make Lemmy the best it can be.

At the moment this still seems too complicated, so I'm looking for your suggestions to improve it: - On the main page, is the text relevant and up to date or should anything be changed? - How about the instance selection wizard (click "join a server" on the homepage), which lets you select topics and languages to select instances. Do the current options make sense? - The instance list itself, is there any information missing, or potential design improvements? - And the list of apps, what can be done here? For one thing the data is rarely updated, so we would appreciate pull requests. - Any other suggestions you may have.

Do you remember Nokia phones, with their Symbian OS? Dead and gone, you might think, but even they have dedicated enthusiasts here in 2026. Some of them have gone so far as to produce a new ROM for the daddy of Symbian phones, the Nokia N8, and [Janus Cycle] is giving it a spin.
For many people, the smartphone era began when the first Apple iPhones and Android devices reached the market, but the smartphone itself can be traced back almost two decades earlier to an IBM device. In the few years before the birth of today’s platforms many people even had smartphones without quite realizing what they had, because Nokia, the market leader in the 2000s, failed to make their Symbian platform user friendly in the way that Apple did. The N8 was their attempt to produce an iPhone competitor, but its lack of an on-device app store and that horrific Windows-based installation system meant it would be their last mass-market flagship before falling down the Microsoft Windows Phone rabbit hole.
In the video below the break he takes a pair of N8s and assembles one with that beautiful camera fully working, before installing the new ROM and giving it a spin. We get to see at last what the N8 could have been but wasn’t, as it gains the last Symbian release from Nokia, and the crucial missing app store. Even fifteen years later it’s a very slick device, enough to make us sorry that this ROM won’t be made for the earlier N-series sitting in a drawer where this is being written. Oggi mi sono imbattuto in questo sito: protectstar.com/it/blog/appclo… e mi è venuto uno spaghetto, perché ho trovato tra le applicazioni installate sul mio smartphone AppCloud. Ho quindi installato la app Anti Spy e ho fatto la scansione del mio smartphone, pensando a quanti spyware mi avrebbe trovato. Invece non ha trovato niente e ho così disinstallato l'applicazione.

People with too many followers may sometimes be glad to interact (like me) but more often they receive too many replies and they are already tired, bored and uninterested, eg. because it is not work for which they are paid for (among other reasons). Their sense of humor may just be incompatible with yours.
By following people with few followers, you can get very random results. Most of them are inactive... because they have too few followers, too few interactions, too little interest in their content. You may help some of them by following them, but the most likely the result will be big, safe, harmless Nothing.
So choosing the people with just right number of followers and posts, coming from interesting instances, may be the best choice. I don't want attack or insult the mastodon.social crowd, but they are likely to be normies, staying in their safe zone, put there by their default app setting.
Choose wisely, because you are now forming the bubble, which is likely to form you future Fedi experience! This is the "algorithm", here.

Esiste un dovere etico, prima ancora che professionale: rispettare la dignità delle vittime, soprattutto quando la morte è violenta e il dolore è ancora vivo. Raccontare la cronaca significa dare voce ai fatti, non svestire una persona della sua dignità. Significa ricordare chi era la vittima, non come appariva. Ma evidentemente il morboso attrae di più

Or you could just emulate the VIC-20 in your browser thanks to the work of [Lance Ewing].

Very-long baseline interferometry (VLBI) is a technique in radio astronomy whereby multiple radio telescopes cooperate to bundle their received data and in effect create a much larger singular radio telescope. For this to work it is however essential to have exact timing and other relevant information to accurately match the signals from each individual radio telescope. As VLBI is used for increasingly higher ranges and bandwidths this makes synchronizing the signals much harder, but an optical frequency comb technique may offer a solution here.
In the paper by [Minji Hyun] et al. it’s detailed how they built the system and used it with the Korean VLBI Network (VLB) Yonsei radio telescope in Seoul as a proof of concept. This still uses the same hydrogen maser atomic clock as timing source, but with the optical transmission of the pulses a higher accuracy can be achieved, limited only by the photodiode on the receiving end.
In the demonstration up to 50 GHz was possible, but commercial 100 GHz photodiodes are available. It’s also possible to send additional signals via the fiber on different wavelengths for further functionality, all with the ultimately goal of better timing and adjustment for e.g. atmospheric fluctuations that can affect radio observations.

Part of traveling the world as an Anglophone involves the uncomfortable realization that everyone else is better at learning your language than people like you are at learning theirs. It’s particularly obvious in the world of programming languages, where English-derived language and syntax rules the roost.

It is now possible to do something akin to OS foo YNA bar though, because [Richard Hainsworth] has created y Ddraig (the Dragon), a programming language using Welsh language as syntax. (The Welsh double D, “Dd” is pronounced something like an English soft “th” as in “their”)
Under the hood it’s not an entirely new language, instead it’s a Welsh localisation of the Raku language. A localisation file is created, that can as we understand it handle bidirectional transcription between languages. The write-up goes into detail about the process.
There will inevitably be people asking what the point of a programming language for a spoken language with under a million native speakers is, so it’s worth taking a look at that head on. It’s important for Welsh education and the Welsh tech sector because a a geeky kid in a Welsh-medium school Pwllheli deserves to code just as much as an English kid in a school near Oxford, but it goes far beyond Welsh alone. There are many languages and cultures across the world where English is not widely spoken, and every single one of them has those kids like us who pick up a computer and run with it. The more of them that can learn to code, and thrive without having the extra burden of knowing English, the better. Perhaps in a couple of decades we’ll be using code from people who learned this way, without our ever knowing it.

▪️ О том, что Якименко и Верцинский являются одним человек также заявили Попов и Чижиков в своих явках с повинной, которые подписали после задержания.
В чем суть дела?
▪️ Летом 2024 года стало известно о задержании антифашистов из Москвы, которые состояли в «экстремистском» сообществе Antifa United. Им вменяют три эпизода нападений на «идеологических врагов».
▪️ Один из потерпевших — Максим Кондратюк — рассказал, что на него напали в апреле 2021 года из-за ремня Thor Steinar с рунами и футболка группы «Адольф Культ» с лицом «внешне похожим на Адольфа Гитлера».
▪️ Кондратюк утверждает, что ему угрожали красным молотком для разбивания стекол в транспорте и газовым баллончиком и заставили снять ремень и футболку. В суде Кондратюк отметил, что изменил свои взгляды и сказал:
«Вы видели мой паспорт? У меня на обложке Кадыров и Путин с горящими буквами ZV».
▪️ По делу Antifa United также была проведена экспертиза, за которую отвечал популяризатор вымышленной науки «деструктологи» Роман Силантьев. По результатам экспертизы подсудимых объявили участниками «проукраинского анархомарксизма».
«Это просто шизофренический бред профдеформированного оперативного сотрудника, которому надо было раскрыть движение левых радикалов. Вот он это и сделал», — заявил Якименко после экспертизы.

В больнице испанского города Барселона впервые в мире пересадили женщине лицо донора, который решился на процедуру ассистированного ухода из жизни. Об этом сообщило агентство Reuters.
Операция прошла осенью 2025 года в больнице Валь дʼЭброн, но известно о ней стало только после конференции, которая состоялась в понедельник, 2 февраля.
