Ho riguardato i post del 2025 e ho ricreato quello che mi interessava ricreare, ho rimesso da parte qualcuno tra i miei segnalibri. Tutto sommato non sono mai stato attaccato al passato, conservo qualcosa e lascio andare il resto. La scorsa estate ho chiuso Gmail senza salvare una ventina d'anni di email (qualche amicizia se l'è un po' presa quando l'ha saputo... ma per me, se ci sei nel presente, ci sei, che altro serve?).
Comunque sono molto soddisfatto del mio nuovo setup. Sono riuscito a conservare al 90% le mie abitudini perché normalmente interagirò ancora tramite il mitico #Phanpy, che funziona alla grande anche con #Friendica anche se usa solo una parte delle sue API. Per i post veloci di tutti i giorni, le ricondivisioni e le interazioni è perfetto, snello, ben fatto, e molto, molto elegante. E per postare immagini è comodissimo (inserire immagini e alt-text nei post da Friendica è parecchio laborioso). Ho notato, dopo un po', che aveva qualche problema con il login da più dispositivi sulla stessa rete (quando mi loggavo su un nuovo device, l'altro si disconnetteva). Ho risolto utilizzando ben 5 istanze di Phanpy diverse, una per dispositivo! Potenza del software libero e della decentralizzazione! 😁😁😁
(Ho riprovato a usare #Raccoon, ma purtroppo ha ancora troppi problemi, quelli noti mesi fa non sono mai stati risolti e per me è inutilizzabile. Peccato, sarebbe un progetto con tante potenzialità, speriamo che lo sviluppo venga ripreso.)
Ho anche ritoccato un po' l'esperienza utente su Friendica, che userò direttamente se voglio scrivere post formattati, come questo (per esempio abilitando il markdown che mi semplifica un po' la sintassi). È stata un'occasione per studiare un po' meglio alcune delle caratteristiche di questa piattaforma così potente. Anche qui ci sarebbe bisogno di qualche intervento deciso! A partire da un editor di post un po' più moderno e funzionale.
Che dire, in ogni caso ora è tutto meno dispersivo e non avrò bisogno di ricordarmi dove avevo salvato un segnalibro o da che parte avevo un contatto. Avanti per un nuovo anno nel Fediverso!

Per qualsiasi dubbio, potete chiedere a me utilizzando i commenti al post, ma sappiate che chi di voi sa come farlo può commentare questo articolo da un account del Fediverso…
Purtroppo, per questione di chiarezza, farò un uso eccessivo dei punti elenco, ma vi assicuro che non ho utilizzato nessun LLM per scrivere questo post (ok, un LLM probabilmente scriverebbe esattamente questo, ma probabilmente lo farebbe con i trattini invece che con le parentesi).
Siccome la guida serve a esplorare l’ambiente del Fediverso, l’ho pensata per un utilizzo tramite il browser e non tramite le app; infatti l’utilizzo tramite browser è l’unico che vi consenta di cogliere pienamente il senso di quello che farete, mentre quasi ogni app cercherà di semplificare e quindi di nascondere alcuni aspetti importanti. In un momento in cui le BigTech ci stanno propinando strumenti di semplificazione forzata mirati a uccidere il WEB, riappropriarsi del WEB è un atto di resistenza.
A questo proposito è importante far capire che il Fediverso è un sottoinsieme dell WEB: il Fediverso è WEB a tutti gli effetti (e infatti è il W3C che definisce gli standard del Fediverso), anzi possiamo dire che non è altro che il WEB che conosciamo, quello con le pagine WEB, le immagini, i commenti, ma con in più l’interazione tra “siti” diversi.
Qui parleremo di app solo di sfuggita, ma non sottovalutiamo quanto le app siano per la maggior parte delle persone il modo più comune di accedere a un qualsiasi servizio e che, per questo motivo, promettiamo che creeremo anche una “scuola guida” dedicata agli utilizzatori delle app, ma questa è un’altra storia…
NB: questa guida nasce per un pubblico italiano e a causa dei molti riferimenti al Fediverso italiano. NB2: se avete fretta e se volete iscrivervi da subito a qualche ambiente del Fediverso, sapppiate che negli ultimi anni abbiamo messo a disposizione quattro ambienti completamente diversi l’uno dall’altro nei quali potete iscrivervi (sì, tranquilli: l’iscrizione è gratuita):
Fediverso: una parola sgraziata, un concetto ostico
Iniziamo facendo subito arrabbiare qualcuno… Sì, perché, anche se personalmente sono molto affezionato alla parola “Fediverso”, sono anche consapevole che Fediverso, come quasi tutte le parole inventate dagli informatici, è una parola davvero sgraziata sia dal punto di vista fonetico, sia per la sciagurata carica evocativa che lascia trasparire: Fediverso sembra sottolineare il concetto di difficoltà più che quello di libertà. Per questo ho deciso di usarla il meno possibile e ho deciso di sostituirla con l’espressione Social WARM o SWARM (Social Web of Autonomous Relational Minds) che mi piace perché è estremamente evocativa del clima che si respira. Cambiare il modo di chiamare qualcosa però non basta, perché bisogna cambiare anche la percezione del Social WARM tra le persone. Per questo bisogna affrontare tre fasi:
Individuazione dell’utente tipo: bisogna capire a chi può essere utile (e a chi non servirà mai) il Social WARM
Promozione verso l’utente tipo: è importante far capire a quel pubblico di utenti perché può essere utile il Social WARM
Rimozione degli ostacoli: è fondamentale facilitare l’accesso al Social WARM da parte di tutti soggetti interessati.
Analizzare come promuovere il Social WARM e come migliorare la sua ergonomia non è oggetto di questo post, mentre è importante affrontare il primo punto, per chiarire i punti di interesse, e il secondo punto, per evitare equivoci.
Social WARM: a chi serve? a cosa non serve?
Il Social WARM è un insieme di tecnologie installabili su server diversi e molto diverse l’una dall’altra, ma che consentono a tutti quelli che le utilizzano di mettersi in contatto tra loro attraverso le più basilari funzionalità social:
consultare
rispondere
ricondividere
reagire
Un elenco non esaustivo di queste tecnologie include piattaforme di microblogging, social network, forum, blog, streaming video, podcast, agende condivise, mercatini on line, condivisione di itinerari: in pratica, un unica rete globale alla quale non partecipano solo piattaforme social propriamente dette, ma in cui ogni piattaforma è sempre corredata da funzionalità social.
Anche se può sembrare controintuitivo, ognuna di queste piattaforme potrebbe essere utilizzata singolarmente (il famoso Thruth Social del vecchio pazzoide malvagio che siete alla Casa Bianca è uno di questi casi!) o addirittura essere installata in una rete locale (un server aziendale, una comunità scolastica, etc) senza alcun accesso a internet, ma è evidente che il massimo potenziale del Social WARM e il massimo godimento degli utenti si ottengono quando queste piattaforme sono interconnesse, ossia (come dicono quelli esperti) federate.
La filosofia della “federazione” infatti è il caposaldo di questo ecosistema (il termine fediverso significherebbe proprio “universo federato“) ma non solo: la possibilità di federarsi è il valore aggiunto che consente anche a una qualsiasi piccolissima comunità di utenti che utilizzano uno di questi software di entrare a far parte di una comunità molto più grande. Questo serve a compensare il fatto che la comunità di utenti di una nuova piattaforma o una nuova app del Social WARM è per forza di cose più ridotta di quelle di una colossale piattaforma commerciale.
L’effetto rete
Quando un utente decide di iscriversi a un qualsiasi “servizio comunitario” sia esso un social, un forum o una piattaforma di gioco, ciò che davvero riuscirà a trattenere l’utente appena entrato è soprattutto la presenza di altri utenti come lui. Per aumentare l’effetto comunitario, le grandi piattaforme commerciali adottano alcuni escamotage, tra i quali spicca soprattutto l’adozione di strumenti e algoritmi che “presentano” l’utente appena iscritto ad altri utenti caratterizzati da interessi affini.
Quanto più la potenza economica della piattaforma commerciale viene convertita in capacità di marketing, tanto più sarà possibile attrarre utenti; più saranno questi utenti, maggiore sarà la possibilità di farli incrociare tra loro; più questi utenti saranno interconnessi, più saranno motivati a rimanere. Questo è il vantaggio che scaturisce dall’effetto rete.
Oggi, in un periodo di oggettiva crisi delle piattaforme social, solo chi gode di una posizione consolidata può sopravvivere, mentre un nuovo social avrebbe enormi difficoltà ad attrarre nuovi utenti. La “federazione” invece consente di creare un nuovo ambiente, affinché coloro che entrano a farvi parte vengano messi subito in contatto con una rete più grande.
Cosa non troverai nel Social WARM?
Mettiamo subito le cose in chiaro: ci sono cose che non troverai mai nel Social WARM e altre che non troverai ancora per un po’ di tempo.
Ecco cosa non troverai:
la folla immensa di persone che sta su Facebook
il flusso ininterrotto di notizie che puoi trovare su X/Twitter
le basilari ma (per quanto peggiorate) ancora potenti funzioni di ricerca presenti su X/Twitter
gli influencer presenti sui social
i video brevi utili a sbomballarsi il cervello (qualche tentatvo c’è, ma non sta funzionando)
gli algoritmi che ti suggeriscono continuamente contenuti & utenti che ti tengono incollato alle piattaforme
i “secoli” di video caricati su Youtube con tutta la loro smisurata quantità di conoscenza (frammista beninteso anche a tanta spazzatura)
comportamenti ostili come il “blasting” o il mobbing e comportamenti problematici come razzismo, omofobia, suprematismo, incel
pornografia di qualità, pornografia non consensuale e pornografia illegale
Dovevo rappresentare qualcosa di incredibilmente stupido e quindi ho deciso di utilizzare lo strumento più adatto: la IA di Gemini Ecco invece cosa non troverai ancora per molto tempo, ma magari tra un po’ inizierà a esserci:
i tuoi amici, i tuoi familiari, i tuoi concittadini e compaesani
la sterminata comunità di opinionisti più o meno esperti presenti su Reddit
app realizzate davvero in maniera professionale
Fatta questa premessa doverosa, è chiaro che molti utenti delle grandi piattaforme non saranno affatto interessate al Social WARM. Vediamo quindi chi potrebbe essere interessato.
A chi può interessare il Social WARM?
In primo luogo devi sapere che ci sono diversi modi per entrare nel Social WARM:
iscrivendoti a uno dei tantissimi server esistenti, gestiti da volontari che hanno deciso di mettere a disposizione il proprio tempo e i propri soldi per creare piccole comunità (stai tranquillo: esistono molti siti che li censiscono). A volte per farlo non serve neanche lasciare la tua email!
creando tu stesso un server comunitario
creando un tuo piccolo server personale
federando il tuo blog, che poi significa anche in questo caso creare un server personale, solo in modo più semplice
curiosando e navigando tra le pagine di quei server senza iscriversi
Allora perché dovresti entrare nel Social WARM?
per provare qualcosa di nuovo: questo è il motivo che ha spinto me a farlo, ma posso assicurarti che è il motivo migliore per farlo
perché ti piace giocare: la varietà di forme che può assumere il Social WARM è perfetta per giocare; parlarsi da luoghi diversi, fatti con software diversi e visibili in modi diversi è un gioco continuo
perché sei spinto da motivazioni ideologiche contro le BigTech statunitensi, l’economia dell’attenzione, il capitalismo della sorveglianza e “altre cose brutte”: nobile motivazione, ma devo deluderti, perché le ragioni ideologiche smuovono poche persone e per poco tempo; per la maggior parte delle persone l’ideologia non costituisce mai una spinta sufficiente a cambiare i propri comportamenti
perché provare a essere padrone del tuo canale di comunicazione avvalendoti di una tecnologia libera e aperta: questa è un’ottima motivazione per decidere di entrare nel Social WARM e sono certo che non ti deluderà
perché vuoi essere utile per la comunità delle persone che conosci o per quella di persone che non conosci e perché ti piace creare spazi liberi in cui altre persone possono trascorrere momenti piacevoli: potrà sembrare strano ma si tratta di un’esperienza molto gratificante
Perché quindi dovresti restare nel Social WARM?

perché sai che in un ambiente nuovo è normale sentirsi disorientati, ma questo non significa che non sia un ambiente piacevole
perché hai capito che se ci sono diverse persone che si trovano bene là dentro, allora ci saranno sicuramente buoni motivi per trovarsi bene, magari chiedendo a chi già si trova là (e ti accorgerai quanto quella comunità di utenti e di amministratori sa essere accogliente)
perché hai capito che favorire l’ecosistema del Social WARM è incredibilmente utile a migliorare l’ambiente digitale intorno a te e in un certo senso anche la società stessa; inoltre, grazie alla tecnologia federata, è possibile creare, inventare, adattare così tante cose fantastiche che l’unico limite è la fantasia e il tempo.
Per concludere, vediamo prima a chi può interessare il Social WARM:

a chi ama giocare
a chiunque voglia far parte di una comunità curiosa e giocherellona, mediamente istruita e aperta alla tecnologia
a chiunque voglia uno spazio protetto in cui interagire con gli altri senza essere molestato
a chiunque voglia comunicare con gli altri minimizzando la propria dipendenza dai conglomerati tecnologici e mantenendo la proprietà sui dati
E vediamo chi è invece che non dovrebbe affacciarcisi
gli influencer: la portata è poca e il coinvolgimento non viene mai da account monodirezionali
razzisti, omofobi, molestatori e troll: certi comportamenti sono tabu
chi pensa di trovare app di dating: se dovete scopare, è molto più bello farlo fuori da qui
chi vuole tutto e subito: qui la costruzione della presenza è lenta

Bello vero? Beh, sappiate che finora avete scalfito solo la superficie delSocial WARM, ma dovreste essere in grado di esservi fatti un’idea delle incredibili potenzialità di questo nuovo mondo.
Adesso faremo il punto di quello che abbiamo imparato, osserverete leggermente più da vicino un bel campionario di software e infine riceverete alcune istruzioni di base da ricordare quando si entra nel Social WARM.
Primo giro turistico senza scendere dal bus: cosa abbiamo imparato?
La prima cosa importante che abbiamo imparato è che gli strumenti con i quali è possibile vivere il Social WARM sono tantissimi e che sono abbastanza diversi tra loro, tanto che a volte questi strumenti sembrano non avere nulla in comune l’uno con l’altro.
Abbiamo visto Lemmy, una specie di Reddit, Peertube, lo Youtube libero, Mastodon, che ricorda il Twitter di una volta, Friendica, che somiglia a Facebook, Writefreely, una piattaforma di blogging minimale e NodeBB, un forum professionale che però è anche federato; ma ce ne sono molti di più: Pixelfed per chi cerca un Instagram senza algoritmi, Piefed e Mbin nati per creare qualcosa di simile a Lemmy, Pleroma, molto simile a Mastodon, o Misskey, ancora più giocattoloso; e ancora Mobilizon e Gancio che servono a pubblicare eventi di calendario, Castopod e Funkwhale dedicati ai podcast, Flohmarkt, un marketplace etico, Owncast per le dirette video, Loops, la risposta federata a Tiktok, Bookwyrm, un’alternativa ad Anobii, Forgejo, per ospitare repository, Wanderer, per condividere sentieri e tracce GPS Bonfire, un ecosistema completo pensato per le organizzazioni cooperative. E infine trovano posto anche piattaforme che già conosciamo per altri meriti, come WordPress, piattaforma leader nel blogging, Ghost, l’alternativa etica a Substack e il pessimo Threads, un progetto di Meta che oggi raccoglie innumerevoli utenti (quasi tutti colati da Instagram) anche se la sua federazione è abbastanza limitata e poco usabile.
Abbiamo anche visto che l’interfaccia di ciascuno di questi software è diversa e che, in base al software attraverso cui siamo entrati, vedremo il Social WARM con occhi diversi.
Possiamo, per puro scopo didascalico, distinguere i software del Social WARM in tre macrocategorie, pur con alcune intersezioni:
Socialverso: l’insieme dei social veri e propri. Si tratta di piattaforme in cui la funzione più importante è quella di seguire altri utenti
Forumverso: l’insieme delle piattaforme simili a forum e focalizzate sull’iscrizione a canali tematici e sulla relativa discussione; qui la possibilità di seguire altri utenti è secondaria o addirittura non prevista
Contentverso: l’insieme delle piattaforme dedicate alla pubblicazione di contenuti: articoli di blog, video, podcast, eventi, dirette, recensioni di libri, etc; benché sia spesso possibile iscriversi a queste piattaforme come semplici fruitori, la finalità principale di chi si iscrive è principalmente quella di pubblicare contenuti
Software diversi, interfacce diverse
Ora darete un’ultima occhiata ad alcune timeline pubbliche di diversi software. Buona passeggiata:

E le app?
Una buona parte dei software del Fediverso dispone di un’app specifica, ma alcuni software come Mastodon e Lemmy, ne hanno anche più di una.
Al momento, tra quelle che conosco (non sono un grande utilizzatore di app), ce ne sono due che consentono a un utente di “vedere” il Social WARM anche senza iscriversi: Raccoon, un’app per Mastodon e Friendica, e Raccoon for Lemmy, che è ovviamente dedicata all’omonimo software.
Da queste app è possibile selezionare il server di interesse e “navigarlo” in sola lettura per curiosare un po’.
Cose da sapere prima di iscriversi: visibilità, “fediquette” e test
Prima di entrare nel Social WARM è opportuno affrontare alcuni aspetti importanti, ma sappiate sempre che per tutti questi aspetti potete sempre presentare preventivamente ai moderatori i vostri dubbi!
Visibilità
Il primo aspetto da considerare è quello della visibilità: il Social WARM talvolta propone ai nuovi utenti dei profili consigliati, ma non segnalerà mai nuovi profili come il vostro agli utenti più affermati.
L’unico modo per trovare nuovi utenti è… cercarli; e le uniche possibilità che il vostro nuovo account venga notato da qualcun altro è interagire con lui, ossia:
seguirlo
rispondere a un suo post
reagire a un suo post (like o ricondivisione).
Naturalmente quando qualcuno si accorgerà di voi, vorrà vedere chi siete e se il vostro profilo risulterà vuoto, nessuno vi seguirà: e ricordate che, se quell’utente è su un altro server, potrebbe non vedere i post che avete pubblicato fino a quel momento. Le uniche cose che vedrà sono:
le note che avrete inserito nella vostra “biografia”
(ma solo per le piattaforme “social”) i post che avrete “fissato in evidenza” sul vostro profilo.
Fediquette
Abbiamo scritto diversi post sulla fediquette e su come funziona la moderazione nel Social WARM, ma sintetizzando al massimo, possiamo dire che è sufficiente l’educazione di base per non avere problemi; ricordatevi che siete ospiti di ambienti digitali gestiti gratuitamente dagli amministratori per creare un’atmosfera piacevole: leggetevi le regole di comportamento previste da ogni server e chiedete sempre delucidazioni ai moderatori del vostro server (di solito li trovate nella pagina principale o in quella con le “informazioni” del server).
Ci sono comunque alcune cose da non fare mai, per non avere problemi con i moderatori e con gli altri utenti:
trollare o dare l’impressione di farlo; soprattutto all’inizio, quando non avete una reputazione, evitate le risposte sarcastiche, il linguaggio volgare o violento
pubblicare post a ripetizione; chi pubblica troppi messaggi rischia di essere percepito come uno spammer; se avete dubbi sulla definizione di “troppi”, chiedete subito delucidazioni a uno dei moderatori del vostro server
pubblicare post con sole immagini non descritte (le immagini possono essere descritte con una funzione apposita: fatelo!) o con solo un link (soprattutto shortlink, link a social commerciali e shortlink a social commerciali!)
pubblicare post di autopromozione scomposta, magari al vostro sito pieno di annunci pubblicitari o, peggio ancora, con link referral
pubblicare post razzisti, omofobi, sessisti
pubblicare immagini e contenuti hot
pubblicare materiale copiato dai social commerciali o contenuti generati con l’intelligenza artificiale (magari senza neanche dirlo)
Fare palestra
Ci sono diversi modi per pubblicare contenuti di test. Software come Mastodon consentono per esempio di pubblicare un post con visibilità tale da essere pubblico ma da non comparire nella timeline generale; i server basati su software di tipo forum invece presentano sempre una comunità/categoria dedicata ai test.
Anche in questo caso, come già detto, chiedete ai moderatori.

In 2025, we observed HoneyMyte updating its toolset by enhancing the CoolClient backdoor with new features, deploying several variants of a browser login data stealer, and using multiple scripts designed for data theft and reconnaissance.

HoneyMyte updates CoolClient and deploys multiple stealers in recent campaigns
Over the past few years, we’ve been observing and monitoring the espionage activities of HoneyMyte (aka Mustang Panda or Bronze President) within Asia and Europe, with the Southeast Asia region being the most affected. The primary targets of most of the group’s campaigns were government entities.
As an APT group, HoneyMyte uses a variety of sophisticated tools to achieve its goals. These tools include ToneShell, PlugX, Qreverse and CoolClient backdoors, Tonedisk and SnakeDisk USB worms, among others. In 2025, we observed HoneyMyte updating its toolset by enhancing the CoolClient backdoor with new features, deploying several variants of a browser login data stealer, and using multiple scripts designed for data theft and reconnaissance.
An early version of the CoolClient backdoor was first discovered by Sophos in 2022, and TrendMicro later documented an updated version in 2023. Fast forward to our recent investigations, we found that CoolClient has evolved quite a bit, and the developers have added several new features to the backdoor. This updated version has been observed in multiple campaigns across Myanmar, Mongolia, Malaysia and Russia where it was often deployed as a secondary backdoor in addition to PlugX and LuminousMoth infections.
In our observations, CoolClient was typically delivered alongside encrypted loader files containing encrypted configuration data, shellcode, and in-memory next-stage DLL modules. These modules relied on DLL sideloading as their primary execution method, which required a legitimate signed executable to load a malicious DLL. Between 2021 and 2025, the threat actor abused signed binaries from various software products, including BitDefender, VLC Media Player, Ulead PhotoImpact, and several Sangfor solutions.
Variants of CoolClient abusing different software for DLL sideloading (2021–2025)
The latest CoolClient version analyzed in this article abuses legitimate software developed by Sangfor. Below, you can find an overview of how it operates. It is worth noting that its behavior remains consistent across all variants, except for differences in the final-stage features.
Overview of CoolClient execution flow
However, it is worth noting that in another recent campaign involving this malware in Pakistan and Myanmar, we observed that HoneyMyte has introduced a newer variant of CoolClient that drops and executes a previously unseen rootkit. A separate report will be published in the future that covers the technical analysis and findings related to this CoolClient variant and the associated rootkit.
CoolClient functionalities
In terms of functionality, CoolClient collects detailed system and user information. This includes the computer name, operating system version, total physical memory (RAM), network details (MAC and IP addresses), logged-in user information, and descriptions and versions of loaded driver modules. Furthermore, both old and new variants of CoolClient support file upload to the C2, file deletion, keylogging, TCP tunneling, reverse proxy listening, and plugin staging/execution for running additional in-memory modules. These features are still present in the latest versions, alongside newly added functionalities.
In this latest variant, CoolClient relies on several important files to function properly:

Parameter modes in second-stage DLL
CoolClient typically requires three parameters to function properly. These parameters determine which actions the malware is supposed to perform. The following parameters are supported.

Final stage DLL
The write.exe process decrypts and launches the main.dat file, which contains the third (final) stage DLL. CoolClient’s core features are implemented in this DLL. When launched, it first checks whether the keylogger, clipboard stealer, and HTTP proxy credential sniffer are enabled. If they are, CoolClient creates a new thread for each specific functionality. It is worth noting that the clipboard stealer and HTTP proxy credential sniffer are new features that weren’t present in older versions.
Clipboard and active windows monitor
A new feature introduced in CoolClient is clipboard monitoring, which leverages functions that are typically abused by clipboard stealers, such as GetClipboardData and GetWindowTextW, to capture clipboard information.
CoolClient also retrieves the window title, process ID and current timestamp of the user’s active window using the GetWindowTextW API. This information enables the attackers to monitor user behavior, identify which applications are in use, and determine the context of data copied at a given moment.
The clipboard contents and active window information are encrypted using a simple XOR operation with the byte key 0xAC, and then written to a file located at C:\ProgramData\AppxProvisioning.xml.
HTTP proxy credential sniffer
Another notable new functionality is CoolClient’s ability to extract HTTP proxy credentials from the host’s HTTP traffic packets. To do so, the malware creates dedicated threads to intercept and parse raw network traffic on each local IP address. Once it is able to intercept and parse the traffic, CoolClient starts extracting proxy authentication credentials from HTTP traffic intercepted by the malware’s packet sniffer.
The function operates by analyzing the raw TCP payload to locate the Proxy-Connection header and ensure the packet is relevant. It then looks for the Proxy-Authorization: Basic header, extracts and decodes the Base64-encoded credential and saves it in memory to be sent later to the C2.

C2 command handler
The latest CoolClient variant uses TCP as the main C2 communication protocol by default, but it also has the option to use UDP, similar to the previous variant. Each incoming payload begins with a four-byte magic value to identify the command family. However, if the command is related to downloading and running a plugin, this value is absent. If the client receives a packet without a recognized magic value, it switches to plugin mode (mechanism used to receive and execute plugin modules in memory) for command processing.

CoolClient plugins
CoolClient supports multiple plugins, each dedicated to a specific functionality. Our recent findings indicate that the HoneyMyte group actively used CoolClient in campaigns targeting Mongolia, where the attackers pushed and executed a plugin named FileMgrS.dll through the C2 channel for file management operations.
Further sample hunting in our telemetry revealed two additional plugins: one providing remote shell capability (RemoteShellS.dll), and another focused on service management (ServiceMgrS.dll).

RemoteShellS.dll – Remote shell plugin
Based on our analysis of the main implant, the C2 command handler did not implement remote shell functionality. Instead, CoolClient relied on a dedicated plugin to enable this capability. This plugin spawns a hidden cmd.exe process, redirecting standard input and output through pipes, which allows the attacker to send commands into the process and capture the resulting output. This output is then forwarded back to the C2 server for remote interaction.

Browser login data stealer
While investigating suspicious ToneShell backdoor traffic originating from a host in Thailand, we discovered that the HoneyMyte threat actor had downloaded and executed a malware sample intended to extract saved login credentials from the Chrome browser as part of their post-exploitation activities. We will refer to this sample as Variant A. On the same day, the actor executed a separate malware sample (Variant B) targeting credentials stored in the Microsoft Edge browser. Both samples can be considered part of the same malware family.
During a separate threat hunting operation focused on HoneyMyte’s QReverse backdoor, we retrieved another variant of a Chrome credential parser (Variant C) that exhibited significant code similarities to the sample used in the aforementioned ToneShell campaign.
The malware was observed in countries such as Myanmar, Malaysia, and Thailand, with a particular focus on the government sector.
The following table shows the variants of this browser credential stealer employed by HoneyMyte.

These stealers may be part of a new malware toolset used by HoneyMyte during post-exploitation activities.
Initial infection
As part of post-exploitation activity involving the ToneShell backdoor, the threat actor initially executed the Variant A stealer, which targeted Chrome credentials. However, we were unable to determine the exact delivery mechanism used to deploy it.
A few minutes later, the threat actor executed a command to download and run the Variant B stealer from a remote server. Variant C analysis
Unlike Variants A and B, which use hardcoded file paths, the Variant C stealer accepts two runtime arguments: file paths to the browser’s Login Data and Local State files. This provides greater flexibility and enables the stealer to target any Chromium-based browser such as Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Opera, regardless of the user profile or installation path. An example command used to execute Variant C is as follows: Jarte.exe "C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Login Data" "C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Local State" In this context, the Login Data file is an SQLite database that stores saved website login credentials, including usernames and AES-encrypted passwords. The Local State file is a JSON-formatted configuration file containing browser metadata, with the most important value being encrypted_key, a Base64-encoded AES key. It is required to decrypt the passwords stored in the Login Data database and is also encrypted.
When executed, the malware copies the Login Data file to the user’s temporary directory as chromeTmp.

To retrieve saved credentials, the malware executes the following SQL query on the copied database: SELECT origin_url, username_value, password_value FROM logins This query returns the login URL, stored username, and encrypted password for each saved entry.
Next, the malware reads the Local State file to extract the browser’s encrypted master key. This key is protected using the Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI), ensuring that the encrypted data can only be decrypted by the same Windows user account that created it. The malware then uses the CryptUnprotectData API to decrypt this key, enabling it to access and decrypt password entries from the Login Data SQLite database.
With the decrypted AES key in memory, the malware proceeds to decrypt each saved password and reconstructs complete login records.
Finally, it saves the results to the text file C:\Users\Public\Libraries\License.txt.
Login data stealer’s attribution
Our investigation indicated that the malware was consistently used in the ToneShell backdoor campaign, which was attributed to the HoneyMyte APT group. Another factor supporting our attribution is that the browser credential stealer appeared to be linked to the LuminousMoth APT group, which has previously been connected to HoneyMyte. Our analysis of LuminousMoth’s cookie stealer revealed several code-level similarities with HoneyMyte’s credential stealer. For example, both malware families used the same method to copy targeted files, such as Login Data and Cookies, into a temporary folder named ChromeTmp, indicating possible tool reuse or a shared codebase.

Both stealers followed the same steps: they checked if the original Login Data file existed, located the temporary folder, and copied the browser data into a file with the same name.
Based on these findings, we assess with high confidence that HoneyMyte is behind this browser credential stealer, which also has a strong connection to the LuminousMoth APT group.
Document theft and system information reconnaissance scripts
In several espionage campaigns, HoneyMyte used a number of scripts to gather system information, conduct document theft activities and steal browser login data. One of these scripts is a batch file named 1.bat.

The script starts by downloading curl.exe and rar.exe into the public folder. These are the tools used for file transfer and compression.

It then collects network details and downloads and runs the nbtscan tool for internal network scanning.

During enumeration, the script also collects information such as stored credentials, the result of the systeminfo command, registry keys, the startup folder list, the list of files and folders, and antivirus information into a file named log.dat. It then uploads this file via FTP to http://113.23.212[.]15/pub/.

Next, it deletes both log.dat and the nbtscan executable to remove traces. The script then terminates browser processes, compresses browser-related folders, retrieves FileZilla configuration files, archives documents from all drives with rar.exe, and uploads the collected data to the same server.
Finally, it deletes any remaining artifacts to cover its tracks.
Ttraazcs32.ps1 – PowerShell-based collection and exfiltration
The second script observed in HoneyMyte operations is a PowerShell file named Ttraazcs32.ps1.
Similar to the batch file, this script downloads curl.exe and rar.exe into the public folder to handle file transfers and compression. It collects computer and user information, as well as network details such as the public IP address and Wi-Fi network data.
All gathered information is written to a file, compressed into a password-protected RAR archive and uploaded via FTP.
In addition to system profiling, the script searches multiple drives including C:\Users\Desktop, Downloads, and drives D: to Z: for recently modified documents. Targeted file types include .doc, .xls, .pdf, .tif, and .txt, specifically those changed within the last 60 days. These files are also compressed into a password-protected RAR archive and exfiltrated to the same FTP server.
t.ps1 – Saved login data collection and exfiltration
The third script attributed to HoneyMyte is a PowerShell file named t.ps1.
The script requires a number as a parameter and creates a working directory under D:\temp with that number as the directory name. The number is not related to any identifier. It is simply a numeric label that is probably used to organize stolen data by victim. If the D drive doesn’t exist on the victim’s machine, the new folder will be created in the current working directory.
The script then searches the system for Chrome and Chromium-based browser files such as Login Data and Local State. It copies these files into the target directory and extracts the encrypted_key value from the Local State file. It then uses Windows DPAPI (System.Security.Cryptography.ProtectedData) to decrypt this key and writes the decrypted Base64-encoded key into a new file named Local State-journal in the same directory. For example, if the original file is C:\Users\$username \AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Local State, the script creates a new file C:\Users\$username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Local State-journal, which the attacker can later use to access stored credentials.

Once the credential data is ready, the script verifies that both rar.exe and curl.exe are available. If they are not present, it downloads them directly from Google Drive. The script then compresses the collected data into a password-protected archive (the password is “PIXELDRAIN”) and uploads it to pixeldrain.com using the service’s API, authenticated with a hardcoded token. Pixeldrain is a public file-sharing service that attackers abuse for data exfiltration.

This approach highlights HoneyMyte’s shift toward using public file-sharing services to covertly exfiltrate sensitive data, especially browser login credentials.
Conclusion
Recent findings indicate that HoneyMyte continues to operate actively in the wild, deploying an updated toolset that includes the CoolClient backdoor, a browser login data stealer, and various document theft scripts.
With capabilities such as keylogging, clipboard monitoring, proxy credential theft, document exfiltration, browser credential harvesting, and large-scale file theft, HoneyMyte’s campaigns appear to go far beyond traditional espionage goals like document theft and persistence. These tools indicate a shift toward the active surveillance of user activity that includes capturing keystrokes, collecting clipboard data, and harvesting proxy credential.
Organizations should remain highly vigilant against the deployment of HoneyMyte’s toolset, including the CoolClient backdoor, as well as related malware families such as PlugX, ToneShell, Qreverse, and LuminousMoth. These operations are part of a sophisticated threat actor strategy designed to maintain persistent access to compromised systems while conducting high-value surveillance activities.

What is Friendica

Using Git
Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository, regardless of the branch (stable or develop) you are using. Remember to update the dependencies with composer as well. So, assuming that you are on the stable branch, the commands to update your installation to the 2026.01 release would be cd friendica git pull bin/composer.phar run install:prod cd addon git pull If you want to use a different branch than the stable one, you need to fetch and checkout the branch before your perform the git pull.
Pulling in the dependencies with composer will show some deprecation warning, we will be working on that in the upcoming release.
As many files got deleted or moved around, please upload the unpacked files to a new directory on your server (say friendica_new) and copy over your existing configuration (config/local.config.php and config/addon.config.php) and .htaccess files. Afterwards rename your current Friendica directory (e.g. friendica) to friendica_old and friendica_new to friendica.
The files of the dependencies are included in the archive (make sure you are using the friendica-full-2026.01 archive), so you don’t have to worry about them.
Post Update Tasks
The database update should be applied automatically, but sometimes it gets stuck. If you encounter this, please initiate the DB update manually from the command line by running the script bin/console dbstructure update from the base of your Friendica installation. If the output contains any error message, please let us know using the channels mentioned below.
Please note, that some of the changes to the database structure will take some time to be applied, depending on the size of your Friendica database this update might run for days.
If you are using the daemon for your background worker, note that we have moved the functionality into the console. Adopt your setup to use the new bin/console daemon command.

Yes @Peter Lord the channel cache needs to be activated in the local.config.php set the channel_cache and potentially also the system_channel_cache in the system block to true. The one is for the system channels, the other for the user defined ones. The impact on the performance differs from node to node and might also be not beneficial. Hence it is not activated by default.

ho trovato le stanze italiane e inizierò a darci un'occhiata. Credo però che avremmo bisogno di un sistema che utilizzi il numero di cellulare, come fa Signal. WhatsApp ha preso piede perché basta conoscere il numero di telefono di qualcuno per contattarlo, non richiede i tecnicismi (installare sunup per usare Matrix, ma chi lo aveva immaginato?) Il difetto di Signal è che è USA.. non si potrebbe installare un server italiano?

Printing bills or payroll checks can afford some downtime while you reboot or replace a bad board. But if your computer services ATM machines, cash registers, or a factory, that’s another type of operation altogether. That was where Tandem computers made their mark, and [Asianometry] recounts their history in a recent video that you can watch below.
When IBM was king, your best bet for having a computer running nonstop was to have more than one computer. But that’s pricey. Computers might have some redundancy, but it is difficult to avoid single points of failure. For example, if you have two computers with a single network connection and a single disk drive. Then failures in the network connection or the disk drive will take the system down.
The idea started with an HP engineer, but HP wasn’t interested. Tandem was founded on the idea of building a computer that would run continuously. In fact, the name was “the non-stop.” The idea was that smaller computer systems could be combined to equal the performance of a big computer, while any single constituent system failing would still allow the computer to function. It was simply slower. Even the bus that tied the computers together was redundant. Power supplies had batteries so the machines would keep working even through short power failures.
Not only does this guard against failures, but it also allows you to take a single computer down for repair or maintenance without stopping the system. You could also scale performance by simply adding more computers.
Citibank was the first customer, and the ATM industry widely adopted the system. The only issue was that Tandem programs required special handling to leverage the hardware redundancy. Competitors were able to eat market share by providing hardware-only solutions.
The changing computer landscape didn’t help Tandem, either. Tandem was formed at a time when computer hardware was expensive, so using a mostly software solution to a problem made sense. But over time, hardware became both more reliable and less expensive. Software, meanwhile, got more expensive. You can see where this is going.
The company flailed and eventually would try to reinvent itself as a software company. Before that transition could work or fail, Compaq bought the company in 1997. Compaq, of course, would also buy DEC, and then it was all bought up by HP — oddly enough, where the idea for Tandem all started.

Zu Auschwitz: Ich habe das Lager als Jugendlicher besucht und es war prägend für mich. Ich wünschte mir, dass dies alle Menschen tun würden, damit sie begreifen, wohin Hass führt.
Wünsche mir eine Aktionswoche, bei der alle Bilder (ohne Bildbeschreibungen) automatisch in einfarbige Kacheln verwandelt & alle Videos (ohne Untertitel) tonlos abgespielt werden.
