Correct way to do CW on Friendica?

Not that I usually put any warnings on my posts anywhere, or feel I have a reason to, and suspect filtering is far more useful for people who are triggered by certain topics, but I'm a little confused about how to correctly do Content Warning/Notices on Friendica?

The compose editor has a button that says "Content Warning" but it creates an [abstract] BBcode, which when used appears to make that content completely disappear on Friendica (though if you go to "Edit" it will still be there).

The [spoiler] BBcode appears to work like the Content Warnings do on Mastodon, plus you can add to it WHY you are hiding the content. But how do those look on other platforms?

In Settings->Additional Features->Post composition, in the explanation of the "Add an abstract from ActivityPub content warnings" check box, it says, "Abstracts are displayed as content warning on systems like Mastodon or Pleroma."

I have found this to be the case. I have also found that, while the abstract text will not appear at all in the preview while editing, it does appear when I actually publish the post. On Friendica I see the abstract in bold text (and it does not behave like a content warning). In Mastodon it does behave as a content warning. My understanding is that Friendica does not treat it as a content warning because it is assumed that Friendica users will use filters to avoid seeing things. Is it safe for federation's sake to use both abstract and spoiler tags with the same content, to have it be correctly hidden both on Friendica and Mastodon? Maybe even nesting one inside of the other?

Tobias makes a good point in that thread that how am I, as an author, supposed to guess what might "trigger" some random person reading what I wrote? The burden should be on the random person to set up filters so they reduce the likelihood they'll see anything they know might trigger them. Because I can't possibly know that! Which is why I pretty much never use CWs and if someone doesn't like it that's their problem.

I really don't want to join in on that thread, but after reading it I have to wonder why nobody mentioned the idea of using [spoiler] for a CW and leave [abstract] for a summary? Spoiler already collapses on Friendica just like CWs do on Mastodon. It would avoid having to add a network parameter to [abstract] to determine whether it appears as a summary or CW. It seems like an obvious solution to me. Just make spoilers = CW and be done with it?

The abstract has a history. It was used to create a summary to send to other networks when they had a character limit. This makes sense when a post is 500 or 1000 characters long.
However, the summary can also be what its meaning implies. Friendica will provide both options with Michael's issues.

CW is extremely controversial. Even on Mastodon. The sender cannot know what might trigger someone. That is something the recipient must filter out.

Still, the intention of a spoiler and a CW are essentially the same, to hide content from someone that may upset them, and spoiler collapses on Friendica just like CWs collapse on Mastodon.

If abstract's intention is only as a summary then that should be all it does. Just because it has been used for CWs is no reason to keep using it for that if it doesn't make any sense, which IMO it doesn't.

How does it work differently? Spoilers on Friendica collapse. CWs on Mastodon collapse. They collapse to prevent the reader from accidentally seeing something they may not wish to see. You have to intentionally expand them to read it. They're totally the same.

The fact that abstracts are now hidden was Friendica's response to the CW implementation in Mastodon. The spoiler was used instead.

Mastodon took the easy route. The projects responded.
You don't have to like it, and it will be fixed by the issues. But that's the story.

I may have missed something in that issues thread, but it sounded like Mastodon a summary tag converted from a bare [abstract] is now treated as a CW while [abstract=apub] is treated as an actual summary? That's still unnecessarily confusing when the [spoiler] code is right there and literally does exactly the same thing as a CW.

I rarely use CWs even on Mastodon and never use abstracts on Friendica. Anyway, I'm done arguing about it. I really don't care how my posts look on other platforms.

That's a question you should ask those who have misused the feature. Friendica continues to communicate with various networks that have a problem with long texts. I use the summary feature regularly.

@Random Penguin @Marcus This has always been my stance, over on the Taurnation we post mostly links to content ranging from G-XXX and use content warnings for the latter, as that's generally expected and even often required. On my personal blog however, we only use hash tags, because the collected list of triggers I've been told I should be protecting people from basically would allow me to only post maybe cat pics and nothing else without a content warning, and even that is iffy.

@Random Penguin I always use the [abstract][/abstract] tags. The CW gets seen by others. [spoiler][/spoiler] seems to only work with networks that support more types of content formatting than Mastodon, basically. I.e. in Hubzilla it works, in Lemmy it should work (but it's buggy), in Piefed it should also work but I never checked.

Employees are routinely asked to collaborate with co-workers half way around the globe and be camera ready, or whatever passes for webcam ready, in order to telecommute when they are out of office. Every office laptop, tablet, or cell phone these days comes equipped with some sort of camera sensor capable of recording at HD resolution. Twenty years ago, that was not the case. Though tech conglomerates like HP had a different idea of teleconferencing to sell back in 2005 dubbed the Halo Collaboration Studio.

Retrotechtacular: The $550K Video Conferencing System Used to Make Bee Movie

Jerry Seinfeld dressed up as a honey bee promoting his film Bee Movie.

The Halo Studio was a collaboration between HP and Dreamworks that was used during the production of Bee Movie. Studio heads at Dreamworks thought it necessary to install the HP teleconferencing solution inside the New York office of Jerry Seinfeld, the writer of the film, as to allow him to avoid long trips to Dreamworks production offices in Los Angeles. According to the HP Halo Collaboration Studio brochure, “Halo actually pays for itself, not only by reducing travel costs, but also by encouraging higher productivity and stronger employee loyalty.” Certainly Dreamworks believed in that sales pitch for Bee Movie, because the upfront asking price left a bit of a sting.

Less of a singular machine, more of an entire dedicated room, the Halo Studio had a $550,000 asking price. It utilized three 1280×960 resolution plasma screens each fitted with a 720p broadcast camera and even included an “executive” table for six. The room lighting solution was also part of the package as the intent was to have all participants appear true to life size on the monitors. The system ran on a dedicated T3 fiber optic connection rated at 45 Mbps that connected to the proprietary Halo Video Exchange Network that gave customers access to 24×7 tech support for the small sum of $30,000 a month.

It could very well be that quality of clothing has gone down as companies try to “optimize” the manufacturing. Probably varies by brand and country. But I’d say we live in the era of cutting corners, in every industry.

Tiny Little TV Runs On ESP32

Few of us keep big old cathode ray tubes in the house anymore, but we can still appreciate the form factor of the classic TV. Indeed, the Tinytron from [t0mg] is a neat little tchotchke in this vein — a miniature TV that you could just about fit on a keyring.

[t0mg] wanted this project to be quick and easy to put together. It starts with an ESP32-S3-LCD-1.69 from Waveshare. It’s an all-in-one dev module which combines the microcontroller with a small screen right out of the box. You just have to solder a single six pin header to hook it up with an SD card reader and battery, and you’re done with the electronics. Even the case is a cinch to build, with four 3D printed components that can be spat out of a Prusa MK4S in just half an hour. Programming it can be done via a web browser. Just about the only thing

Dear Fedi friends.

As some of you may know, I have a wonderful daughter Lila who had a severe form of epilepsy at the age of 5 months. This epilepsy is called West Syndrome.

We had to go through a hell of a treatment to stop her seizures. The thing that helped her was called "Synacthene Retard". It's basically ACTH, a synthetic hormone similar to adrenocorticotropic hormone produced by our anterior pituitary gland.

My daughter was one of the last kids who had a chance to get the Synacthene Retard from the lab that produced it (Alpha Sigma). This was late March 2024. And in May 2024 Alpha Sigma said they discontinued this product without ANY public explanation.

I am trying to inquire about the disappearance of Synacthene Retard from French pharmacies. I am looking for contacts of a medical journalist or an expert in pharmaceutics to help me lead this investigation. It may save lives of dozens of other kids with that suffer from West Syndrome. Thank you!

Aggiornato il 30 novembre con un nuovo attacco informatico che prende di mira gli smartphone israeliani.

Ecco, questo è interessante. Poche settimane dopo la campagna di Google per promuovere Android come più sicuro di iPhone, la battaglia degli smartphone ha preso una piega improvvisa. L'esercito israeliano ha deciso di vietare i telefoni Android agli ufficiali superiori, per motivi di sicurezza.

La notizia è stata diffusa dalla radio dell'esercito israeliano e ripresa dal Jerusalem Post. "Secondo l'ordine previsto, ai comandanti dal grado di tenente colonnello in su sarà consentito utilizzare solo iPhone per le comunicazioni ufficiali. Secondo il rapporto, questa misura mira a ridurre il rischio di intrusioni nei telefoni degli ufficiali superiori".

They take up space that you could use for more bikes! [Chaz] figured there had to be a better way and discovered the unlikely solution of the humble garage opener.

Garage doors are made to lift high with moderate weight, exactly what one would expect from a bike lift. If you have high ceilings in your garage or wherever else you store your bikes there can’t be much easier than pushing a button to get your bike out of the way.

A raptor, the species of which I am unsure, flies above North Lynn. It is a fairly large bird (definitely larger than even the biggest gulls) with a mottled brown body, a vicious looking beak, wings fully extended and a broad tail, which would give it great control in flight, enabling it to hover for extended periods if necessary.

How to Make Big Cabinets on a Small CNC Router

It’s easy to build big wooden furniture if you have a massive industrial CNC router, but few of us are so lucky. However, you can still build sizable stuff with a smaller router if you know what you’re doing. [Aribabox] shares some useful tricks and techniques for building large workshop cabinets on smaller machines.

The key to doing this well is modularity. [Aribabox] shows off how to build excellent workshop drawers in pieces using a stackable design. Rather than having to cut out one huge side panel to cover the whole stack of drawers, each drawer can have its own side panel that easily fits on a smaller router. Leonardo presenta Michelangelo Dome: il sistema AI di difesa contro missili ipersonici

Il nome dice tutto, e la somiglianza con il famoso Iron Dome israeliano è chiaramente intenzionale. Il sistema israeliano, operativo dal 2011, è servito da modello. Ma il Michelangelo Dome va ben oltre: non è concepito come un singolo sistema d’arma, ma come un’architettura completa supportata dall’intelligenza artificiale.

“Queste minacce possono verificarsi in pochi secondi “, ha affermato Cingolani. “Non abbiamo abbastanza tempo per inviare e-mail o scambiare messaggi. Dobbiamo reagire in tempo reale”.

Al centro del progetto c’è la convinzione che i sistemi di comando e controllo accelerati dall’IA non siano più opzionali, ma essenziali per la sopravvivenza. Cingolani ha spiegato il passaggio dottrinale dalla rigida e lineare kill chain alla kill web distribuita e supportata dall’IA, in cui numerosi punti dati dei sensori vengono analizzati, fusi e valutati dall’IA per selezionare automaticamente il miglior meccanismo di intercettazione. Tuttavia, l’ordine finale di aprire il fuoco rimane nelle mani dell’uomo, ha sottolineato Cingolani.

L’obiettivo è trasformare le forze armate italiane e, in seguito, quelle della NATO in un unico sistema di difesa sincronizzato. Navi, sistemi terrestri, aerei da combattimento, droni e costellazioni satellitari convoglierebbero i dati in una piattaforma unificata, basata sull’intelligenza artificiale, in grado di tracciare, prevedere e neutralizzare le minacce in tempo reale.

L’alternativa, secondo Cingolani, è la cecità strategica. “Se un oggetto vola a due o tre chilometri al secondo e non so in anticipo dove colpirà tra qualche minuto, potrei essere già stato colpito. Non posso neutralizzare lo”, ha riportato Aerospace Global News.

Europa: cinque minuti all’impatto

Cingolani ha ripetutamente sottolineato la posizione geografica: l’Europa non è protetta dagli oceani. Le future armi ipersoniche potrebbero raggiungere le principali capitali in cinque-sette minuti.

Ma non si tratta solo di armi ipersoniche. Cingolani ha anche sottolineato che la guerra in Ucraina ha dimostrato come droni a basso costo possano distruggere carri armati del valore di decine di milioni. “Giovani soldati hanno montato mezzo chilo di esplosivo su droni collegati a reti satellitari commerciali e hanno neutralizzato carri armati per un valore di 20 milioni di euro “, ha affermato. Anche in questo caso, i sistemi in rete potrebbero aiutare a rilevare ed eliminare le minacce, prosegue il rapporto di Aerospace Global News.

Intelligenza artificiale, satelliti e supercomputer come spina dorsale tecnologica

Leonardo si posiziona come l’unica azienda europea dotata dell’intero stack tecnologico necessario per fornire il sistema: sensori, sistemi di intercettazione, tecnologia spaziale, capacità informatiche, sviluppo dell’intelligenza artificiale e calcolo ad alte prestazioni.

I satelliti sono al centro del piano. A Roma verranno realizzati 100 satelliti all’anno, progettati per l’allerta missilistica, il rilevamento di colonne di fumo infrarosse e la previsione della traiettoria.

“Questi satelliti devono essere in grado di rilevare un oggetto che viaggia a cinque chilometri al secondo “, ha affermato Cingolani. “Chi possiede questi satelliti possiede una capacità di rilevamento e previsione che nessun altro possiede.”

L’Italia inizierà nel 2026, poi la NATO.

Leonardo consegnerà i primi sistemi all’Italia entro il 2026 e integrerà i sistemi nazionali esistenti nella nuova architettura basata sull’intelligenza artificiale. Tuttavia, questo rappresenta solo un singolo livello di difesa. L’azienda non ha specificato di quale livello si tratterà.

L’Italia non è l’unico Paese ad ispirarsi all’Iron Dome israeliano. Anche la Turchia sta investendo molto nel suo sistema di difesa aerea integrato e multistrato, lo Steel Dome. E Taiwan, con il suo T-Dome, ha annunciato piani per un proprio sistema di difesa aerea multistrato per difendersi dalle minacce ostili.

@6AL sì, i sensori a infrarosso sono utilizzati per integrare altre tecnologie di rilevamento, ma queste colonne di fumo, davvero, non sono riuscite a trovarle da nessuna parte.
Non ho idea come siano state generate, ma una bella IA sembrerebbe la spiegazione migliore

saranno le «infrared plume», ovvero le scie calde che seguono un razzo, o un aereo, che si vedono all’infrarosso - e a occhio nudo si vede pure il fumo della combustione, ma l’infrarosso non vede il fumo… vede solo il calore.

cuando andavo a sqola io cerano le ore di composizione di itagliano, e la ggente imparavono a scrivere come cazzo si doveva.

Magnus Effect Drone Flies, Looks Impossible

By now we’re all familiar with the quad-rotor design most popular among modern drones, and of course there are many variants using more or less propellers and even fixed-wing drones that can fly autonomously. We’ve even seen drones that convert from rotorcraft to fixed-wing mid flight. But there are even more esoteric drones out there that are far more experimental and use even more bizarre wing designs that look like they shouldn’t be able to fly at all. Take [Starsistor]’s latest design, which uses a single motor and an unconventional single off-center wing to generate lift.

This wing, though, is not a traditional foil shape typically found on aircraft. It uses the Magnus effect to generate lift. Briefly, the Magnus effect is when lift is generated from a spinning object in

A record 40% of #Russia’s 2026 budget will go to the military and security forces. In monetary terms, the sector will receive $166 billion — the largest military spending since the Soviet era. Putin has approved the federal budget for next year.

At the same time, social spending has been cut to 25.1%, down from 38.1% before the war against Ukraine. Support for the national economy has fallen to 10.9%.

Assimilation is possible but it doesn’t magically happen on its own. You acquired the social acumen by decades of growing up in that society. People moving in at adult age need to be explicitly told what the rules are, offered courses, exams etc.

Someone replied:

They only need be offered safety. (…) News flash: there are NO societal norms here except as defined by the U.S. Constitution and local laws (which must also be constitutionally sound). No matter how many WP profess otherwise.

#Poland Border Guard received a 33-year-old Syrian citizen who was extradited to Poland by the #Germany authorities.

The man is considered to be the founder and mastermind of an international smuggling network specialising in transporting migrants from #Belarus through Polish territory further west.

According to investigators, the group is believed to have earned as much as half a billion euros, of which nearly 30 million went to support terrorist organisations. The case is considered one of the largest of its kind handled by the Polish authorities.
