Ero a cena con due miei vecchi amici - li conosco dalle elementari - uno è un matematico e l'altro è un fisico, come me.
Dopo un po' il discorso è finito sugli sviluppi futuri delle IA. Raggiungimento di una coscienza, di una volontà etc. Alla fine io ho sostenuto una posizione del tipo che non mi interessa contemplare "arte" prodotta da un qualsiasi algoritmo perché non comunica e non distilla esperienze di vita di altri esseri viventi, ma impacchetta in modo piacevole distribuzioni di probabilità estratte dall'opera di miliardi di vite.
Loro sostengono che non gli frega nulla se una musica, un libro o un quadro sono stati scritti così: "se il risultato è `buono` che differenza fa?"
Risultato buono? Boh, a me sembra che sia proprio una follia. Però oggi sono passato per quello retrogrado.

(via @workingclasshistory): On this day, 28 November 1919, Faye Schulman, photographer and Jewish resistance partisan, was born in Lenin, Poland (now Belarus). In 1942, the Nazis murdered 1,850 Jews in the Lenin ghetto, leaving only Faye and 25 others alive, making Faye take and develop photos of the massacre. Covertly she made copies of the photographs for herself. She soon fled and joined the partisan resistance, serving as a fighter and nurse. While on a raid in Lenin with her unit, Faye managed to retrieve her camera equipment, and then began documenting the resistance movement, developing her photos under blankets. "I want people to know that there was resistance. Jews did not go like sheep to the slaughter. I was a photographer. I have pictures. I have proof." Faye survived the war and moved to Toronto, Canada, living to the age of 101.
May her memory be blessing.

28 November, 1967 - 24-year old physicist and PhD student Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered the first radio pulsars.
She prototyped and helped build the array telescope which consisted of wires and cables strung over a space the size of 57 tennis courts.
The subsequent 1974 "No-Bell" Prize in Physics was awarded to her advisor and another physicist but she was left out because she was a graduate student (and a woman).
