One of the most common objections I hear to climate action is: “But what about China?”

The person making this argument usually goes on to claim that China is doing nothing, while everyone else is making sacrifices. But that’s not what the data show.

Here’s the reality:

* As the U.S. doubles down on fossil fuels and blocks new wind and solar projects, its emissions are ticking up.

* In contrast, China’s emissions appear to have peaked — and may now be starting to decline.

* Last year, China installed a full half of all the world's new wind and solar energy.

* Over the past two years, China installed more new solar power each year than the U.S. has installed in total across its entire history.

* China's clean exports alone are cutting CO2 outside its borders by 1% year on year.

Of course no country can fix climate change on its own. But just as it's a global problem, progress in one place helps everyone.

Okay, let's completely disregard Gardiner. (Which doesn't mean that some people here don't like him and that I won't still mention his concerts.)
But romanticism is not his forte, and I won't forget how he behaved personally. It's no longer enjoyable to listen to him when you know how childishly he treats his colleagues.
Tyrants in music are hard to bear (Szell, Toscanini), but in this day and age they are simply impossible.

A Novelty Clock Makes The Best Tiny Mac Yet

We’re lucky enough in 2026 to have cheap single-board computers fast enough to emulate machines from the 1990s, touching on the 32-bit era. We’ve seen a few projects as a result, emulating the Apple Macs of the 68000 era, but even with the best 3D printing, they can disappoint when it comes to the case. So when [This Does Not Compute] saw a novelty alarm clock using a very well-modelled mini replica of an early Mac, putting a Mac emulator in it was the obvious way to go.

The project uses a Raspberry Pi with a small colour LCD. The video below the break takes us through the process of gutting it and mounting the Pi and display on a custom 3D-printed bracket. Not only will they require age verification, Discord is also utilising AI technology to analyze your content and habits to infer your age. While not a direct privacy violation, it is at least to me nearing that sort of behaviour that one ought to be very wary of.

Now that that's out of the way — why?

The standard reasons aplenty. Searchability and indexability of content. Ownership of content. No more walled gardens.

Imagine a place where you can contribute your content to, not to feed a machine, but because you want to share your knowledge and talk to other people (radical idea, I know.)

Realize too that your content can then kept secure in a place where it can be shared and celebrated, archived for future readers, and indexable by search engines so it can be discovered widely.

That same place also means you're not screaming into a void — that your every contribution adds just that little bit more to the community around it. You're not just talking in a public square, you're build a corpus of content that you can and should be proud of.

We've spent the greater part of a decade pouring our time and energy into walled gardens... for the benefit of some faceless corporation. It's high time to turn the tables around and empower yourself!

So what's the alternative? There are many such alternatives one could jump ship to. Discord has implemented many features that make it stand out in a sea of competitors. Any one of those features could be something that make it special to you. In many cases, those features cannot be easily replicated. The question you need to ask yourself is whether this constitutes a deal-breaker, or whether you are willing to give it up. Do you need custom profiles? Do you need high-definition streaming? Coloured themes?

One of the standout features of Discord is its use of a single login across all of its communities. This is their network effect. The Fediverse has its own complement to this network effect. Simply put, each user can talk to any other user on the fediverse, without impediment, without additional logins, without any barriers. This is not only the dream of the fediverse, it is its reality. We have this now, and it is worth celebrating.

So what is that place? That place is a forum. A bulletin board. That place from back in your childhood where you might've spent far too many hours talking to random people. Forums haven't gone anywhere, and they've been silently chugging along all these years. They've even kept pace with modern web technologies and apps, and NodeBB is one of them.

Крупнейший российский производитель грузовиков практически превратился в предприятие ВПК: почти половину своей продукции «КамАЗ», судя по всему, поставляет по гособоронзаказу.
Компания сообщила , что продажи ее грузовиков в прошлом году выросли на 9% с 35,4 до 38,4 тыс., а доля на рынке с 18% до 33%. Однако на учет в ГИБДД поставлено почти вдвое меньше новых «КамАЗов»: чуть менее 20 тыс. новых «КамАЗов» всех типов, включая автобусы.
Это на 19,5% меньше, чем годом ранее. Первичные регистрации «КамАЗов» уменьшаются с 2022 г., следует из данных СП аналитического агентства «Автостат» и АО «Электронный паспорт». Их разрыв с продажами, наоборот, растет.
Расхождения в статистике регистраций и продаж были и до войны, но гораздо меньше. В 2021 г. КАМАЗ сообщал о 44,6 тыс. реализованных «на внешнем и внутренних рынках» грузовых автомобилей, а «Автостат» – о 36,4 тыс. поставленных на учет «КамАЗов». Разница составляла 18,4%, в пределах стандартных 15-20%. Аналитик авторынка объясняет разрыв продажами на экспорт, а также сроками регистрации. Точный размер экспорта предприятие не раскрывало, а из публиковавшихся данных следовало, что в России автозавод продает не менее 80% автомобилей, рассуждает аналитик. Кроме того, автомобили продаются не в режиме реального времени – они могут «застрять» на складе производителя или у дилеров. Поэтому цифры по производству и даже продажам не совпадать с данными о постановках на учет. Так и набиралось 15-20% расхождений, говорит аналитик.

В Курчатовский райсуд Челябинска направлен иск об изъятии у главы регионального управления Роспотребнадзора Анатолия Семенова имущества на сумму свыше 400 млн рублей, оформленного на родственников. Об этом сообщила пресс-служба Генпрокуратуры РФ. В минувшую пятницу чиновника задержали по обвинению в мошенничестве с использованием служебного положения (ч. 3 ст. 159 УК РФ).
По данным источника «Коммерсанта», Семенов занимался лоббированием интересов компаний, принадлежащих его родственникам, включая сына, тещу и других близких. В Генпрокуратуре заявили, что он, будучи на госслужбе, занимался «высокоприбыльной предпринимательской деятельностью в сфере санитарно-эпидемиологического благополучия», а на полученные незаконным путем деньги покупал премиальную недвижимость и автомобили, которые переписывал на «третьих лиц». У Семенова требуют конфисковать шесть квартир, три частных дома, 18 земельных участков, 12 нежилых помещений в Москве, Московской и Челябинской областях общей площадью 25 тыс. кв. метров, а также 17 транспортных средств.
Центральный районный суд Челябинска 13 февраля арестовал главу управления Роспотребнадзора по региону до 12 апреля. Следователи устанавливают все эпизоды вероятного взяточничества Семенова, а также проверяют его деятельность по «прикрытию» аффилированных фирм во время ведомственных проверок в регионе.

Арбитражный суд Москвы отказал Минпромторгу в иске к АО «Ньюко» и признал допустимым оформление зарубежной технологии как российской разработки в рамках импортозамещения с сохранением господдержки, пишет CNews. Министерство требовало взыскать с компании 177,6 млн рублей, в которые входят субсидии, штраф и проценты за пользование бюджетными средствами. Субсидия в размере 60 млн рублей была выделена на разработку новых линеек цифровых слуховых аппаратов. Минпромторг утверждал, что заявленные научно-исследовательские и опытно-конструкторские работы фактически не проводились, поскольку созданные слуховые аппараты основаны на готовых технологиях датской компании Oticon — поставляемые комплекты полностью соответствовали оригиналу. Также Минпромторг ссылался на использование иностранных процессоров и формальный характер отчетности. По мнению министерства, это означало отсутствие реальных разработок, делало бюджетные расходы необоснованными и нецелевыми.
Судья Екатерина Аксенова эти доводы не приняла. Она указала, что само по себе использование зарубежных платформ и компонентов не означает отсутствия научных разработок. Суд признал, что велась локализация и доработка продукции под российские условия, и квалифицировал эту работу как полноценные опытно-конструкторские разработки. 16 фев (Рейтер) - Правительство РФ одобрило повышение цен на услуги по перевозке грузов железнодорожной ‌монополии РЖД на 1% с марта 2026 года, следует из опубликованного в понедельник распоряжения правительства.
Грузовые перевозки, на которые увеличиваются цены, ⁠приносят основной доход РЖД, ‌которая переживает финансовые ‌трудности и договаривается с банками и правительством о реструктуризации части долга, превысившего 4 триллиона ‌рублей.
Дополнительные доходы, которые принесет повышение тарифа, нужны «для финансирования мероприятий по ‌компенсации расходов, связанных с обеспечением транспортной безопасности», говорится в документе.
Надбавка будет действовать с 1 марта этого ‌года до 28 февраля следующего.
Повышение тарифов на грузоперевозки с марта на 1% - одна из мер решения финансовых проблем РЖД, обсуждавшаяся в правительстве в конце прошлого года. Предполагалось, что эта надбавка в 2026 году принесет 23,⁠3 миллиарда рублей.
Кроме того, обсуждались также индексация ‌тарифа с октября, рост тарифов на ‌порожний пробег вагонов и 10% надбавка на транспортировку угля на экспорт. (Глеб ‌Столяров, Дарья Корсунская)

the difference is that the Boxer rebellion didn't affect neighboring countries territory and in it's core was also anti imperialistic, while in russia it's fuel by imperialistic dreams and the joy of murdering people, mainly native russian speakers in Eastern Ukraine.

I fell down it 19 years ago. I’m just now recovering. A bunch of wealthy people all decided to dump some of their spare risk on my model all at once localized. I lost everything, except my cat pretty much.
