@manton one way you could do this is by uploading the images, then adding the URLs as attachments, while at the same time they can be linked inline in the text content.
Of course this would be way too much to handle for Mastodon, but from an ActivityPub point of view it makes sense and doesn't require any hand wavy solutions.
In my one user ActivityPub web-app, I have all the moving parts I described above working, but they haven't come together just yet, because the UI for posting is just a CLI tool and it's difficult to describe in markdown an image that hasn't yet been uploaded with a stable URL. But writing this gave me an idea... 🤔

fondations arts grant or state subsidy are dominant power structure artists were also entangled to (as @gahlord said). i see what you're saying about the worsening of rent and food and yes it is to be taken in account but that is not inherently for artists but for everyone. so although i am not that old, i would never pretend artists were fundamentaly free(er) back then.
also i think it's more subtle than making "shit". i had conversation with friends i really respect and admire their practice who told me how they got actually nice job opportunities through instagram. For example someone talk about them to someone else and then show their instagram profile which later get mentionned in a meeting or commission. I know they would have loved that person to show their personnal website instead but factually that person didn't knew about personnal website and used the platform as a way to discover and share other's work. That is a constraint in discoverability not one in what you actually make as an artists (which is another discussion i guess).
