Case in point: Yesterday, my rented server load spiked. Looking at the web server logs, I found some non-sensical URLs including a HTML comment present in the pages of the same website I host. Had to bring down the website for a couple of hours, and then reinstate it in order for the pummeling to end.
Statistics over a period of 100 minutes:
- 3,297 requests with the same nonsensical pattern.
- 3,295 unique IPs (!).
- 80 different user agents, none of them identifying the service issuing these bogus requests.
Stay safe hosting anything out there.
There is hardly a more authoritarian and patriarchal tell than trying to "protect" a vulnerable population by jailing them and not those who prey on them.
The "protective custody" of a burqa and chaperones in Islamist countries or age verification in Western countries come from the same flawed thinking: trying to solve a problem of abuse without removing abusers from power.
Too many people fall for it.
