I spent today mentoring a group of our junior engineers, something I love doing, but it was strange. I was a decade older (2 decades in one case) than anyone in the group. I had a weird feeling of displacement, inhabiting a role that, in my mind, has always belonged to other people.
Technical leadership isn't new to me. I'm used to sharing knowledge. But the pronounced age gap added a different energy, that gives me pause.
I didn't mind it. It's not bitter or sad that I feel. It's more jarring and a sense of being unprepared. I don't know what filling this role means to me.
I have got only 5 years left to retirement (if I make it). I don't feel like I have anything to offer junior engineers. I've never used Claude or GH CoPilot or LightLLM or whatever, and don't have any interest in them. I don't see any future in the industry at all, for anyone really. I try to keep my mouth shut at work to not spread my cynicism too much.
Everything that kept me inspired and interested in tech is long gone now.

in reply to Lilith • • •Qualche giorno fa ho postato questo link La Lupa della Kalsa e mentre scrivevo ricordavo invece un'altra versione della storia, che raccontava mia Nonna e di cui nel tempo ho avuto riscontro avendo trovato articoli sul web che ne parlavano.
La variante della storia è che la "Lupa" (almeno a Palermo) era identificata come la ronda fascista del Duce (le cosiddette camicie nere) che durante il coprifuoco rastrellavano i quartieri e se trovavano bambini per strada li portavano via.
Mia Nonna raccontava che alcuni bambini, suoi coetanei del quartiere, erano scomparsi nel nulla senza mai più fare ritorno a casa.
E leggendo le notizie odierne sembra che la storia si ripete .......
