I wonder what people think is so special about general artificial intelligence?
Best case: It will be like a human inside a computer. Maybe they can think 10 times as fast. Maybe 1000 times.
So what? We already have 8 billion of those. "Thinking" doesn't seem to be the problem we need to solve.
@Not a Spring Onion According to the religious myth, us feeble humans wouldn’t be able to comprehend how an AGI would think. This has led to a few different dogmas:
- We should prevent AGI from existing.
- We should prevent AGI from harming humans.
- We should be the ones controlling the AGI before anyone else.
First one is unfunded, second is a bunch of weirdos who call themselves “rationalists” or “effective altruists” with more funding than sense, and the third is the current trillion-dollar AI ventures including Microsoft, Google, Meta, OpenAI and Anthropic. Although the religious fervor seems to have somewhat abated in favor of just crushing human labor with computation.
