any parents of youngish kids out there have recommendations for how to setup my iPhone in case of an emergency? son is 6 and I think it’s time we start having the ‘call 911 in case I don’t wake up one morning’ conversation. ideally* I’d like him to have his own pin to open my phone where it only shows a few options like calling emergency services or my mom or something. any advice is appreciated (boosts are good thanks)

Knut Hamsun, Norwegian Nobel laureate in literature, sided with the Nazis so much he presented Goebbels with his Nobel medal in 1943 (which wasn't widely known until later).

Norwegians responded by mailing so many of Hamsun's books back to him that his local post office had to hire extra staff.

Norwegians Apply Boycott As Traitor's Punishment

As a means of treating public enemies who are too powerfully protected to be dealt with otherwise the boycott has no equal. It is one of the few remaining weapons left in the hands of the conquered peoples of Europe.

A new form has been invoked in Norway against the country's foremost literary figure, Knut Hamsun, author of Growth of the Soil and a Nobel prizewinner for literature. As such he has been honored by every Norwegian. Now he has chosen to become a follower of Quisling, the traitor who rules Norway as a Nazi agent.
Nazi power prevent direct measures of punishment, but it does not keep his countrymen from letting him know how they hate and despise his desertion. Every house, therefore, that has owned a copy of Hamsun's books is now returning them to Hamsun. So many copies have been sent back that the postoffice in the little town where he lives has had to hire extra helpers to handle the mass. Every mail brings him more of his books, rejected by the people who once held them in honor.
Authors, like other artists, are apt to be more sensitive than the average run of men. If this applies to Hamsun, he has fallen on evil days.

Some good news in a time of darkness: the European wildcat, Felis sylvestris, is making a comeback! This thoughtful-looking example was photographed in a mountainous region of the Czech republic.

The European wildcat's extreme elusiveness may have helped it avoid hunters in places where a larger native cat, the lynx, has been killed off. There may be about 140,000 European wildcats spread across more than two dozen countries. But they are very hard to find!

Wildlife photographer Andrea Giovanni, who made a video of one, writes:

"I'd never even thought of taking photos of wildcats, for a simple reason: I thought it was impossible, or at least, extremely difficult. It's considered 'the ghost of the forests' because it's very, very elusive, and it's hard to predict where it can be spotted. Other animals tend to follow the same trails through the forest. The wildcat goes wherever she wants to."

One reason the European wildcat is coming back is increased legal protections. But another is that villages in Italy and other regions are becoming depopulated! Some are

Encouraging news, and your post puts it all into context. These are the kind of "important marginalia" that the Fediverse is so good at sharing.

The Taoist tradition speaks of "incipiencies", tiny bits of easy-to-overlook information that reveal emerging forces that otherwise remain hidden. Perhaps the return of the European Wildcat is one such incipiency?

il censimento ci dovrebbe essere per ogni persona sul territorio italiano: gli italiani sono schedati dalla nascita con il CF, gli immigrati regolari i DOC di identità e gli altri vanno identificati e regolarizzati..

When it comes to designing a mopping robot, there are a number of approaches you can pick from, including just having the movement of the robot push the soggy mop over the floor, having spinning pads, or even a big spinning roller. But what difference does it make? Recently the [Vacuum Wars] channel ran a comparison to find out the answer.

The two spinning pad design is interesting, because it allows for the bot to move closer to objects or walls, and the base station doesn’t need the active scrubber that the simple static pad requires. The weakness of both types of flat mop design is that they are quickly saturated with dirt and moisture, after which they’ll happily smear it over the floor.

The spinning roller is the most complex, with the robot having its own onboard water tank, and a way to extract the dirty water from the mop and store it for disposal in the base station. Theoretically this would be the clear winner, with basically all of them having features like avoiding carpet.

Taking the test data from 150 different mopping robots that were made to clean up dried-up coffee stains, the results weren’t as clear-cut as one might perhaps expect due to the very limited scope of the test. But the comments to the video are perhaps more revealing. After all, most people don’t briefly run their robot mop over a few dried-up stains, but are faced with more severe real-life scenarios.

One commentator mentions their dogs dragging in a lot of mud on rainy days, in which case the spinning pads robot would end up spreading a thin film of mud across the floor. After upgrading to a spinning roller version this issue was resolved, though it’s readily admitted to be the more expensive system, with a much larger base station.

When in the video you see the details of what each approach involves on the side of the robot, the base station and the human caretaker, trade-offs are clear. Having the fixed flat pad is simple, but moves all complexity to the base station, with the spinning pads removing at least the need to motorize the base station. If you have small children or pets with muddy paws around, neither option works well, so you either have to whip out the human-powered mop or shell out for the high-end robotic solution.

Of course, you can also build your own super-charged robot mop, or a very thorough one, but definitely avoid mopping robots that are too cheap to actually work.

Whenever you see what #ICE is doing in front of cameras, you must imagine what they're doing where nobody can see them--like in the concentration camps the USA is building. It's easy to read those words and much harder to fathom what they mean; that this is happening in our day and age, in what until recently was believed to be a first world country. "Abolish ICE" doesn't go nearly far enough in my view.

My son went over to a friends house this afternoon, when my wife had been planning on helping him with his French homework. This meant she had an hour or so of unexpected free time. @JoelKlebanoff the problem isn’t Trump per se. If the man took his last breath in his sleep tomorrow night, you will just see somebody else come up the next morning to continue the work/momentum that is sponsored by the global fossil fuel industry, which includes Canadian companies and individuals.
Greenland is just a project or perhaps a distraction in itself (not saying it isn’t real, but a distraction). Where the world should be very afraid right now, and support the few who fight against it, is the conservative movement’s attack on the American Fed (Central bank). The people behind Trump have already gained control over the US Supreme Court, if they can also get control of the central bank, the world as you know it will definitely change, with or without Greenland.

@Anders @Steve Herman I don't buy into this "Trump is replaceable" rhetoric. The reason people behind Trump have gained so much is because they were behind Trump. He is the lightning rod for criticism and a rousing speaker, impressing even people who disagree with him. Nobody in his current political formation is even close, including because he sucks all the air in the room. With him gone, things would be very different. After all, nobody replaced Hitler nor a few other prominent authoritarian dictators after their death.

It is however scary to think that these organizations (and money) will eventually find someone soft spoken, articulate, and seemingly sincere, which will make the so-called independents think “he/she has a point” whereas Trump has to rely on pure tribalism… which works until it doesn’t.

This man already exists in the person of Mitch McConnell and has been working tirelessly and successfully at enabling what is now the Trump regime for the past couple decades. He has done more to undermine the biggest counter-powers to US government action than anyone else that I know of. But his work might have been somewhat in vain without the ascension of a strongman who didn't mind pushing the envelope. And before Trump, the Republicans didn't have anyone. When you look at the 2016 Republican primary field, it was bleak for them in that regard before Trump entered the fray.

Donald Trump announced new tariffs on eight European countries, saying the US will impose a 10% duty on all goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland starting Feb 1, 2026. The rate would rise to 25% by June unless a “deal” is reached for the “purchase of Greenland.”
