What is this book about? It demonstrates that the current wartime narrative – namely, that “Russia is the victim of a Western conspiracy and bears no responsibility for the outbreak of the war” – is deeply rooted in a historical and cultural context. Working full time on the Social Web
In January 2026, I will begin working full time in my role as Director at the Social Web Foundation. I am looking forward to the challenge of growing this young non-profit and fulfilling our mission to make a bigger, better Fediverse.
As a refresher: I have been working in the area of federated social networks since starting Identi.ca in 2008. Federated social networks are social platforms that let users on one platform connect to and interact with users on another platform. Linked up with open standard protocols, these platforms together form a Social Web that puts people first.
In 2018, I was a co-author of the ActivityPub standard for social network interoperability. I currently maintain the spec for the W3C and develop extensions for it. In 2024, I wrote ActivityPub: Programming for the Social Web for O’Reilly Media. And I co-founded the Social Web Foundation to further encourage the use of ActivityPub in social networks.
For the last year, I’ve been working nights, lunchtimes and weekends on SWF while holding down my full-time role as Director of Open Technology at the Open Earth Foundation. I love working at OEF; the organization build Open Source software to help cities fight climate change. I have felt very fulfilled in my work there, and I’ve made really strong friendships with the team. It’s been a very special place to work that has changed how I think teams can be.
But over the last year, SWF has had some really amazing opportunities, and in 2026 we’ll be making some big steps forward for the Social Web. I can’t keep doing both jobs, and I feel like, after 4 years at OEF, I’ve done what I can to build up that organization, and I am ready to start on this next one.
It will feel good to have my full attention focused on the Social Web. I’m looking forward to seeing my Open Source friends at FOSDEM 2026 in Brussels at the end of January where I’m helping to organize the Social Web track. I’m speaking at Princeton mid-February, and I’ll be in the Bay Area at the beginning of March. All this time, I’ll be working hard to get the next version of ActivityPub released and to push out several software projects to make the Social Web more fun and interesting.
Thanks to everyone who’s put time, effort and help into the SWF. Thanks to my coworkers at OEF for encouraging me on my next steps in my career. Thanks to my wife and family for tolerating yet another leap into the void.

All Projections Suck, So Play Risk on a Globe Instead
The worst thing about the getting people together is when everyone starts fighting over their favourite map projection– maybe you like the Watterman Butterfly, but your cousin really digs Gall-Peters, and that one Uncle who insists on defending Mercator after a couple of beers. Over on Instructables [madkins9] has an answer to that problem that will still let you play a rousing game of Risk– which will surely not drag on into the night and cause further drama– skip the projection, and put the game on a globe. The pieces are from a 1960s version. The abstract tokens have a certain charm the modern ones lack. Most globes, being cardboard, aren’t amenable to having game pieces cling to them. [madkins9] thus fabricates a steel globe from a pair of pre-purchased hemispheres. Magnets firmly affixed to the bases of all game pieces allow them to stick firmly to the spherical play surface. In a “learn from my mistakes” moment, [madkins] suggests that if you use two pre-made hemispheres, as he did, you make sure they balance before welding and painting them.
While those of us with less artistic flair might be tempted to try something like a giant eggbot, [madkins] was able to transfer the Risk world map onto his globe by hand. Many coats of urethane mean it should be well protected from the clicking or sliding magnet pieces, no matter how long the game lasts. In another teachable moment, he suggests not using that sealer over sharpie. Good to know.
Once gameplay is finished, the wooden globe stand doubles as a handsome base to hold all the cards and pieces until the next time you want to end friendships over imaginary world domination. Perhaps try a friendly game of Settlers of Catan instead.

Their name was the Liu family. 11 years ago, the Liu family was exterminated.
But once the sole surviving member, Gante Lowd, crosses paths with the rightful heir, Liu Kroa, the wheel of fate begins to turn once more.

I love Neon Clash’s overall visual aesthetic. The artwork is beyond beautiful and I am completely enamored with the game’s art style. The CGs especially, are insanely pretty! All the while being very emotional and very impactful! On top of that, the LIs have multiple sprite variations, and their outfits are really stunning. We have none other than the Japanese illustrator, Takaoto thank for all of Neon Clash’s gorgeous glory, which appears to be their first full otome game project. I sincerely hope they’ll have more otome projects in the future because their art style to me, is crazy gorgeous!
As for the game’s staff, the writing team is led by Ririka Yoshimura, who is widely known for also being the lead scenario writer for Cupid Parasite and Despera Drops. The game’s overall director is Ichika Shina, an in-house director for Voltage Inc.
Neon Clash: Echoes of the Lost also has one of the most banger OPs this year. The OP theme, Shangri-La, was by far one of my favorite otome OST of 2025. I also really enjoyed how vibrant the BGMs are in this game; I think they mesh pretty well with the neon Chinese aesthetic of this title, which I’m really loving btw. The game’s BGMs are by Shunsuke Tsuchiya of Procyon Studio, who also composed for Even if Tempest, Black Wolves Saga, KgK, and a few other otome game OSTs in the past.

CAST AND CHARACTERS
With Neon Clash being AmuLit’s third otome console game installment, it has become clearer to me that the studio really does have its own distinct narrative formula. If you’ve played their previous two titles, Even if Tempest and The Red Bell’s Lament, you’ll notice a similar structure shared with Neon Clash, where in the story progresses in a largely linear fashion, and the romance endings only unlock after the main story has been cleared.
That said, this title does not have any branching individual routes in the way conventional console otome games do. Instead, the romance endings only become available after you’ve completed the TRUE Ending of the game. Each chapter has the heroine spending time with a specific love interest:
Chapter 2: Lowd
Chapter 3: Maslo
Chapter 4: Mun
Chapter 5: Hiyok
Chapter 6: is the final chapter that wraps up the story and leads into the endings.
In a way, this format kinda plays out similarly to how Chinese mobile otome games structure their stories (think Tears of Themis, LaDs, MLQC, etc.), where there’s one overarching main story and each chapter is dedicated to a particular love interest.
As for how the story benefits from this type of formula, it certainly depends on the kind of narrative the writers present in the main game. Personally, I wasn’t a fan of how it played out in The Red Bell’s Lament, but I did enjoy the same formula in Even if Tempest. With Neon Clash, I think this approach works well here too, especially given how impressively fast-paced and eventful the main story is. I’ll save more of my detailed thoughts for my “overall impressions” section below, so please keep reading!😁

A mafioso through and through who was adopted and raised by the original Liu family. He works as a priest in a church in Taozhe, with hopes to one day rebuild the Liu family.
I love Lowd! And Umehara seems to have nailed this character down to a T. What a perfect match! Lowd also became one of my fav LIs in the game, and one I’ll probably think of fondly from now on.🥺 He was such a great character and love interest. The man stayed steadfast and loyal until the very end. It actually hurts how unwavering his devotion to the heroine is.😭 Through all the hardships, he remained by her side, for better or worse. I really don’t have any qualms or complaints about this LI.
After finishing all the romance endings in this title, I also think Lowd had the best romantic relationship with Kroa. Personally, I found their chemistry as a couple the most convincing and satisfying. I’m still brainrotting over his romance ending as we speak! I needed more chapters!
⬇️ Spoilers OH MAAAHH LOWWWD!🥵🥵🥵 I am down bad for this man.
I think out of everyone’s romance endings, Lowd’s felt the most natural and intimate. And perhaps this is because of how closely he and Kroa bonded during Chapter Two. It was also the only chapter where the heroine openly admits that she’s in love with someone before entrusting her feelings to her gun, Dilu. While she does something similar with the other LIs, she usually refers to those emotions as “budding feelings.” With Lowd, however, she literally jumped in front of a bullet for this man.
With Dilu nullifying at the end, it makes sense that the most impactful “romantic” feelings she carries are tied to Lowd. After all, he was the very first man she ever developed genuine feelings for. And let’s be real, among everyone Lowd was the one who remained steadfastly by her side the entire time. He never strayed, never did anything to hurt her (whether intentionally or accidentally), never manipulated her, and never forced her feelings. He was also never intrusive, and consistently respected her both as a woman and as the head of the Liu family.
Also, the love endings were all so random, dumb, and silly…but I absolutely ate all the fluff up. After everything they’ve been through, they deserve to just lay back and be dumb and silly for once. 😭
On a different note, I was reading Umechan’s commentary about Lowd, and was kinda shocked that he’s also a Romance of the 3Kingdoms nerd and was even basing Lowd’s character on Guan Yu from the series. He mustve felt giddy having to voice a character inspired by his own fav character from the show.lol So that was a nice little fun fact. I also felt like he did such an amazing job as Lowd, and I really couldn’t imagine anyone more suitable for the role.
Maslo is the boss of a small-time mafia from the countryside. He’s a friendly guy, and the last sort of person you’d expect to be leading a criminal organization. Aside from being part of the mob, he’s active as a popular DJ and song-writer.
Oh my beautiful pink boy! I am also down bad for Maslo… him, his character design and his designated BGM. (laughs) 🤣 Sometimes I intentionally leave the game idle just to listen to his dj vice track, lmao. But on a more serious note, Maslo was a really interesting character, no? And I can’t help but feel like the game could have done so much more with him if he had a proper individual route. In fact, this applies to all of the LIs. There was just so much untapped potential for us to explore more of them in greater depth, if their routes were longer.
Maslo and Kroa’s interactions in chapter three, I have also really enjoyed,🥹and his romance ending had one of the most beautiful CGs in the game. Although, I have to say, it’s his sad ending that completely cemented him as my new oshi.👀
⬇️ Spoilers I just feel like the writers probably had Maslo’s route skeletally structured around him being the designated yandere of the story. However, because of the game’s linear storyline, they scrapped this off and held back! My poor boy! 😭 I really think he didn’t get to shine as much as he deserved because of “plot”. As much as I’m enjoying the game overall, this is kind of the downside of games having linear plotlines; the character depth usually gets shoehorned.
Regardless, I still absolutely love Maslo. I was a bit miffed that his romance ending felt like an exposition dump of his backstory, but that beautiful kiss CG under the sakura tree compensated for it, so I guess its’ all good.(cackles) 😂 I also wanted to get a spicy CG of him and Kroa, making out backstage of his club and I can’t help but feel like we were really robbed of that visually!😭😭😭 His happy end was the only one that did not get a “bed ending” lmao although his sad ending compensated for that!😂 PLS I NEED A FANDISK! I BEG!

The boss of a huge mafia, Mun is considered the only one capable of competing with Biying. The public knows him as the young president of a big company, thanks to his many media appearances. Mun’s natural charisma tends to win him a lot of admirers.
Oh, Sodyk Mun… the man that you are… This is yet another straight-up “I can fix him” FukuJun character fresh outa the oven! Damn, what a smooooth guy. I was grinning the whole time playing Mun’s chapter (Chapter 4) in the game. The dude was just seductive, entrancing, smooth like butter. Though, I have to admit, playing his chapter also made me really nervous. It’s one of those instances where everything feels so right, but you can’t shake the feeling that something is… just off. Ha!🤣🤣🤣
I think Mun’s chapter was probably my favorite in the story. I can’t even allow myself to put the game down, his persuasive nature was literally working its way like cancer. The way his character was written, and how Fukuyama played this out was chef kiss, I have no words! I think Mun is going to be a fan favorite because, man oh man, how could anyone resist being completely swayed by this guy?
⬇️ Spoilers The instant Mun suggested segregation with his class system BS, alarm bells started ringing in my head from all directions. My dude, NO!😭 How could anyone think segregation was a good idea? Even if he was preaching that it was the “best way” to maintain order in Kumyo, NO, NO, NO!!
Mun’s chapter I have to say was probably the one I had enjoyed the most because you can clearly see how deceptive and exceedingly manipulative he is, and I loved how vulnerable Kroa was here as well. She knew the man was making her dance around his palm, but she bit into the trap anyway. Her realization later that something was seriously wrong and that she needed to break free before Mun completely devours her whole and successfully makes her his pawn was such a good story climax.
I also loved the part where she starts noticing herself becoming like Mun while interacting with the Liu capos, and it takes Rin confronting her to snap her back to reality and see Mun’s true colors. That scene was absolutely peak!
If you think about it, Mun was the most dangerous and formidable enemy of the Liu family. The dude was a master manipulator! He manipulated everyone around him: his capos, the entire Sodyk family, the government officials in Kumyo, the police, and law enforcement. They all really believed he was the righteous man he made himself out to be. He even manipulated R, sending him to an early grave, and Zhiho, who ended up betraying the heroine and throwing a wrench into their infiltration plan.
On a side note, I can’t help but think that Mun and Kroa’s dynamic leans into the “lovers to enemies” trope where they start off as close, almost like lovers, and then fate throws them at each other’s throats. I’m really loving this trope in otome games lately! I usually only see it in reverse harem manga/manhwas so having this here was a nice touch.

Hiyok is determined to protect the same Taozhe he was born and raised in, but in reality, his gang was only capable of recklessly, but unsuccessfully lashing back against the Zhuo family. When he downs a particularly strong alcohol, he becomes a whole different person, capable of taking down multiple men at once.
This game is now making a hako-oshi, because I also love Hiyok. The first time you’ll meet him, you can immediately sense just how precious and likable he is.🥺 Hiyok is another trusted and sworn comrade of our heroine, Kroa. Like Lowd, he is incredibly loyal and one of the Liu family’s strongest fighters. I’m a tad wistful though that his chapter only half-focused on him, especially since his final volumes were already converging with the main plot and heading toward the finale. I guess I just needed more fluff with this himbo.😭 On a different note, I wasn’t expecting his bad ending to turn out the way it did…but I kind of liked it. 😳👉👈
⬇️ Spoilers He also keeps a diary! What a precious boy!😭 Kroa’s worries about Hiyok losing his feelings for her felt a bit anticlimactic, because in the end, he never really lost it. It was also pretty easy for her to win him back given Hiyok has always been fond of her. He even had a crush on her the first time they met.
Still and all, I absolutely loved how she worked to get him to like her again in Hiyok’s “happy ending.” It was nice to see her making the first move in everything, and seeing Hiyok turn into this blushing, genki mess was adorable. I love their dynamic as well! So much!😭 Again, I feel robbed of fluff with this man because the romance was too short; just as the cute, fluffy stuff was starting, the chapter was already over. 😭
LIU KROA (Main Heroine)

I love Kroa. She’s now one of my favorite otoge heroines! This woman has serious balls of steel. I was a little wary of her at first, since she came across as somewhat idealistic in the common route, and I had my doubts whether she could truly pull off being the Liu family boss. But as the story progressed, I realized, wow this girl can actually walk the talk.
She’s certainly physically strong, highly skilled with a gun, and more than capable of holding her own during a shoot-out. But its actually her unwavering determination and her intrepid sense of taking risks that got me on her side of the camp. As a mafia boss, she will be pitted in situations where she has to make bold and risky decisions, not just for herself but for everyone in the Liu family. My anxiety was through the roof every time she was served yet another obstacle right after overcoming the last one. The girl seriously could not catch a break!😭 I was nervous for her all the freakin’ time, but her resilience was mighty impressive and very infectious. I could truly feel that she earned every ounce of respect her capos give her.
Kroa is also a very flawed heroine, and that’s one of the things I love most about her. She knows what she is capable of and uses her strengths wisely, but she’s also aware of her limits and what she can’t do on her own. She makes plenty of mistakes throughout the game, and sometimes her risky decisions put both herself and her comrades in danger. She beats herself up over those failures, but what’s remarkable is how she learns from them, rubs the dirt off her face, gets back on her feet, and pounces back harder and stronger every time.🤧 My girl!! 😭😭😭I loved how she was written to be very capable without ever feeling grossly overblown, if that makes sense? She’s not the kind of heroine who’s all mouth and no bite, she doesn’t talk a big game or rely on empty bravado. I really couldn’t stop rooting for her, just like her capos who believed in her as their boss.🥹 BEST GIRL!!
SYSTEM AND LOCALIZATION
Before I get into the details of the game’s system, I just want to say in passing that the love catch for this title is so pretty! 😍 The butterfly animations were perhaps one of my fav design elements, aesthetically speaking, in this title.
As for the system itself, I think this is where most of my complaints lie. First of all, the font was rather tiny and not very visible, the kerning was also kind of awful and there was no way to adjust this. I play docked on my TV, so over time this became a non-issue for me. Next, and perhaps the thing that bothered me the most, is that the system overwrites its parameters after every ending you achieve (whether its the true end or sad end). What I mean is that after achieving, say, the“true ending”, the next time you restart the game from the very beginning, all your save files from the previous run become defunct, and are replaced by the new current progress in your present gameplay.
I think this is probably because of the game’s linear storyline, but as a completionist, it was kind of frustrating to unlock all the endings without having to restart from the very beginning of each chapter, or at worst, from the prologue. It became a nightmare to skip through scenes just to unlock different bad endings while trying different combinations of choices in the process. At the very least, the True End was easy to achieve all thanks to the love catch system.

Localization
The translations also seem pretty good. Since the theme involves the mafia and a lot of morally gray characters, there are naturally lots of coarse language thrown around which I think fits the game’s theme overall. Unfortunately, there are quite a few typos throughout the game. Not that they ruined gameplay, They didn’t bother me, but they’re definitely present, nonetheless.
I think my overall gameplay lasted about 40 hours total. This includes trying to unlock all the endings in the game and playing all the CCTV short stories in the “EXTRA” section. I was also playing blind, my switch docked, and was on auto mode most of the time. Technically, with a walkthroughand without auto-mode, you could finish the game in less than 40 hours.
AmuLit’s Linear Storytelling is back!
To start with, yes, Neon Clash unfortunately has a linear structure, similar to Even if Tempest and RBL. There are no separate branching routes for the guys. Instead, it plays out as one main story, with each chapter highlighting a specific LI.
Personally, I feel like the way these segments advanced wasn’t jarring or disjointed like in RBL, its predecessor. Each chapter introducing an LI flows smoothly within the story, and the MC’s bonding with her love interests doesn’t come off as forced (at least to me). The story kind of just naturally melds together without trying to shove anything in, if that makes sense. With that said, in my opinion, the linear structure actually worked pretty well here because of the game’s setting and how fast-paced all of the events unfolded.
As for how the heroine spends time from one LI to another, her relationships in the main story remain fairly ambiguous. There’s definitely some romantic pining going on, but they mostly come from the LIs’ side (kind of like how they do it in reverse harem animes). The heroine does emotionally acknowledge her budding feelings for an LI in every chapter, but the game somehow found a cheat code to progress the story without locking the romance into one specific guy. Shockingly enough, it made sense to me and worked well in favor of the overall narrative.😳
⬇️ Read spoilers if you’re curious about what I mean. Around the end of Chapter 2 (Lowd’s segment), Maslo approaches Kroa and teaches her how to use her psychometry in reverse. Instead of reading emotions from objects, Kroa learns to store her own emotions into her gun, Dilu. This way, she can transfer all her strong feelings of love, romance, grief, regrets, sorrow to Dilu, and fully step into her role as a mafia boss and endure the territorial power struggles against her rivals without anything weighing her down.
I know it sounds goofy to dump your feelings into a gun lol. But I thought it was actually a pretty crafty way to move the story forward without making Kroa’s interactions with the LIs feel weird or awkward. She also makes it a point in the game to make sure that before her “budding feelings” develop further, she gets rid of them and entrusts them all to Dilu.
Being the head of the Liu family comes with a lot of consequences, so before any lingering emotions weigh her down, she chooses to do away with them. This is especially crucial given the many mistakes she makes throughout the story. In Chapter 2, she jumps out of formation to protect Lowd, which leads to the death of one of her capos, Zhia. Another instance where entrusting her feelings to Dilu becomes vitally relevant is during Mun’s chapter. As her most formidable foe, facing him head-on requires her to completely forget her personal feelings for him.
So yeah, in a way, this cheat sheet actually works really well in the narrative. I was very satisfied with how it was handled.
Romance of the 3 Kingdoms But Make it Mafia
For CN media aficionados, if it isn’t obvious, Neon Clash: Echoes of the Lost is actually heavily inspired by the famous Luo Guanzhong novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I was reading the director’s commentary on the game, and they mentioned that Satoshi Nohara, the producer, the staff themselves, and even the seiyuus were big fans of the series. Ngl, I think it’s kinda brilliant how they were able to interlace the power struggle theme from RoTK into a modern-day mafia story. I was also a fan of the series, (well, mostly the 2010 tv series and the old TRPG lol)😅 and I think the devs really drew a lot of inspiration from the original source and incorporated it beautifully into this game.
Even the game’s worldview, where you can see Kumyo’s map and how it shows which bases belong to which family as well as which family captured which bases after every chapter ending, draws heavily from RoTK, and I thought this was really clever!
I also loved how they adapted the Triad/Chinese mafia-gang style in the story, where the mafia is less formal, less rigid, and more chaotic compared to the American-Italian style mafiosos. I grew up watching HK cinema, and if you’re like me and loved gangster movies like Young and Dangerous, you will absolutely enjoy the intense, hard-hitting action-packed style that Neon Clash delivers. So yeah, this game was right up my alley, so to speak.
I feel like the producer’s vision was perfectly realized by the director, the scenario writer, and the rest of the staff. From reading the team’s commentaries, it’s clear that everyone was highly coordinated, and you can really see that synergy reflected throughout the game!
An Action-Packed Storyline with Multi-Faceted Characters
Plotwise, the tension in this game was insane. Our main characters go through relentless hardships, one after another. I was totally shook how vivid and strong their motivations felt (as if I was there with them lol).I spent the whole time gritting my teeth, wondering what would happen next? How are they going to make their next move? The story itself really felt like an intense battle of divide and conquer all the way up to the very end.
Whenever Kroa and the gang survived and achieved their goals (even for just a brief moment), I couldn’t help but smile and cheer with them. And whenever they suffered a loss, I cried right along with them too. It’s kind of amusing how invested I got in the story, now that I think about it!😅
This title is also pretty fast-paced. While the action-packed scenes in the story take place months apart chronologically, the game’s structure delivers them back-to-back, which kept the story momentum high, sometimes leaving you gasping for air.🤣(laughs)
I think I also liked the fact that, despite the storm of tragedy and chaos unfolding, the game still gives you enough breathing room to process things before throwing you into another spiral. What’s especially nice is that every conflict is born from a character’s own choices and missteps, so the chaos didn’t feel like some sort of arbitrary monkey wrench thrown into the plot for shock value. Most of the tragedies happen within reason and fit naturally into the narrative, so I was pretty satisfied with this aspect of the story. Also, keep in mind that since the story revolves around a modern-day mafia theme, the game can get pretty graphic and violent. So if these things make you queasy, please check the content warnings above.
The side characters were also a lot of fun. I had my favorite picks like R, Rin, the Shelby twins, Yulong, Shao Feng, Yona, and a whole lot of others. Gonglu was a piece of sh*t, but I have to admit, I was kind of infatuated with him at some point. (cackles).🙈

It’s also really hard not to like any of the LIs, as they’re all so distinctively well-written. This game turned me into a filthy box-pusher (hako-oshi) all over again, because I genuinely mean it when I say I’m down bad for every single love interest. I was so sure my top pick was Lowd after finishing all the romance endings, but as I’m writing this review, I keep brainrotting over Maslo. His story in the game was kind of shafted, which is a pity, but there’s just something about him that I’m really drawn to (maybe its his sexy neck frayglyph tattoo, who knows). 😏🤭So I guess, if I had to choose at gunpoint, I’d be rallying behind my beautiful DJ pink-kun!

As for the romance, the confession scenes in the Happy Ends were all pretty silly, dumb, and hilarious, but I somehow inhaled every single one of them because I was STARVED for romance the entire time. After all the hurdles, and hardships these characters went through, they absolutely deserved to let loose and just be silly and dumb for once.
Having said that, if anything, what this title could’ve really benefited from, was more romance scenarios. I’m not saying there’s none because I think the romance in the individual “Happy Ends” was really good food (delicious, even). After all, the scenario is by the writer of Cupid Parasite, so you can definitely pick up their signature flair for spicing things up. However, the length of the epilogues just felt far too short to showcase an utterly satisfying fluff. I wanted more. More fluff and more spice! 😭 Maybe a fandisk could scratch this itch… please, Voltage, I beg!
Do I recommend this game? YES. I…..really….. loooooved this game.😭 I realized I was also the target audience for this title. The ending was so satisfying to me, that I can overlook a few exposition issues because of it. It’s not often that I finish a title and sigh, “Man, that was great,” but that’s exactly how I felt after finishing Neon Clash: Echoes of the Lost. I don’t claim this title is flawless or perfect, but everything about it, from the beautiful cyberpunk Chinese aesthetics, the intense power struggle plotline, the modern-day mafia action-packed scenarios, to the exhilarating main characters that I’ve grown to love and care for, keeps calling me back every time. I’m honestly really shocked at how much this title has wormed its way into my top favorites.
How I wish I could forget this game so I could re-experience all the positive restlessness and edge-of-your-seat milliseconds I spent on it all over again. 😭 It was hell and back, peak! I was thoroughly entertained until the very last roll of credits, so yeah, this is an easy recommendation from me.
This title is currently on a 10% release month discount, so I don’t know what else to tell you. I’ve already bought sets of merch for this title, and I’m pretty sure this won’t be the last time I spend on it. If you care about peak storytelling and peak characters, absolutely play Neon Clash, by all means necessary.

TULIP is short for “The Ultimate Intelligent Peripheral” and it’s an everything expansion board for the HP-41 line of handheld calculators sold by HP from 1979 to 1990. These particular calculators support Reverse Polish notation which seems to be one of those things, like the Dvorak keyboard, where once you get used to it you can never go back.
In doing the research for this article we came across the fan site hpcalc.org which has been online since 1997, although the Way Back Machine can only go back to late 1998. Still, we were impressed. It’s fun that the site still looks very much like it did 28 years ago!

Obviously this means that it should be capable of self-hosting its compiler, which is exactly what [Valentyn Danylchuk] did with the xcc700 C compiler project.

The xcc700 compiler is currently very minimalistic, omitting more complex loop types as well as long and floating point types, for starters. People say they don’t make em’ like they used to, and while this isn’t always the case, it’s certainly true that old vices rarely die with time. This doesn’t mean they can’t use a refresh. [Marius Hornberger] recently backed that up when he decided to restore an old vice that had seen better days. Customized axial bearing assembly When refreshing old tools, you’ll almost always start the same: cleaning up all the layers of grease and ruined paint. The stories that each layer could tell will never be known, but new ones will be made with the care put into it by [Marius]. Bearings for the tightening mechanism had become worn down past saving, requiring new replacements. However, simply swapping them with carbon copies would be no fun.
[Marius] decided to completely rethink the clamping mechanism, allowing for much smoother use. To do this was simple, just machine down new axial bearings, design and print a bearing cage, machine the main rod itself, and finally make a casing. It’s simple really, but he wasn’t done and decided to create a custom torque rod to hammer in his vicing abilities. Importantly, the final finish was done by spraying paint and applying new grease.

Our keyboards, on the other hand, remain stubbornly limited to a few dozen keys.
On Windows, the traditional workaround involves memorizing numeric codes or digging through character maps. Linux, being Linux, offers something far more flexible: XCompose. It’s one of those powerful, quietly brilliant features that’s been around forever, works almost everywhere, and somehow still feels like a secret.
XCompose is part of the X11 input system. It lets you define compose sequences: short key sequences that produce a Unicode character. Think of it as a programmable “dead key” system on steroids. This can be as simple as programming an ‘E’ to produce a Euro sign or as complex as converting “flower” into a little flower emoji. Even though the system originated with X11, I’ve been told that it mostly works with Wayland, too. So let’s look deeper.
Starting XCompose
The secret is the Compose or Multi-key. You press it to essentially escape into XCompose mode, so when you type “flower”, it knows you don’t want to insert those literal letters in. You can pick which keyboard key is your compose key in your system settings. The Right Alt or Ctrl key is a common choice. I use my Caps Lock key, since I never really use it for anything else.
You can set the Compose key in other ways, too, including in ~/.XCompose, but it is usually easier to set it in the system settings. However, ~/.XCompose is one place you can set up custom rules.
By default, though, you should have some useful combos. For example, <Compose> ' e it should give you é and <Compose> " o should give you ö. The default rules are in /usr/share/X11/locale/*/Compose, where the * is your locale of choice.
Customize
The defaults usually cover a lot of ground. But you may want to define your own. You can do that by creating or editing ~/.XCompose. This file can contain rules or include other rule files. I have heard, however, that Wayland doesn’t do includes, so if you use that, it is something to keep in mind.
The file format is simple enough, with each line being a definition:
<Multi_key><a><e> : "æ"
Don’t make the mistake of trying to write something like <@>. All the special characters need the names from X11’s keysymdef.h file like <at> or <asterisk>.
When you make a custom file, you’ll usually start with: include "%L"
This tells the system to load the defaults for your locale. You can also use %H for your home directory or %S for the system directory. When using some systems, you may have to include “/%L” instead.
Formally, the configuration line looks like this: <EVENT>... : <RESULT> # comment
The <EVENT> allows you to not only specify keys but also modifiers that must be or must not be present. The <RESULT> can be a string or a character, and you can even insert an octal or hex number to be sure you get the key you want. For more, read the man page.
It is worth noting that any definition you provide will override the system ones, so if you don’t like something, it is easy to redefine it to something else. One nice thing is that the result doesn’t have to be a single character. You can use an entire string system. So: <Multi_key> <c> <q> : "CQ de WD5GNR K"
As far as I know, there’s no way to embed a newline in the result that always works. You can try using something like \xa, for example, but \n doesn’t work. Also, no substitutions work on password/PIN entry, and that’s by design.
Why Build Your Own?
You can build up strings that make sense to you. But you know someone’s already done it. The repo has a core file of interesting definitions and some extra ones, too. My suggestion: don’t use their install function, which only gives you the core. Just create your own file like this, adjusting for wherever you put the files: include "%L"
include "/home/xxx/xcompose/dotXCompose" include "/home/xxx/xcompose/frakturcompose" include "/home/xxx/xcompose/emoji.compose" include "/home/xxx/xcompose/modletters.compose" include "/home/xxx/xcompose/parens.compose"
Keep in mind that when you change this file, it will only apply to GUI apps you started after the change. Try <Compose> : ) to get among others.
And if you don’t like that collection, there are others.
Some Common Use Cases
Music? Try ♭ (#b) or ♯ (##). You can even make notes like ♪ (#e). Prefer math? How about ≠ (/=) or a square root symbol √ (v/). If your math runs more to accounting, you can write about Euros (€ – =E) or Yen (¥ – =Y). Hams will appreciate /O which produces Ø (note, that is an upper case O on the input).
There are plenty of other ones, too. The best way to know is to look in the files you are using and experiment. <Multi_key> ❤> ❤> : "¯\_(ツ)_/¯" # Shrug
It is easy to code up things like your name, your e-mail address, and more. Since you can use names instead of cryptic keystrokes, it is much easier to use. For example, I forget that my name is on Macro+F5, but <Compose>@name is easy to remember. I find it makes it easy to remember if I prefix all (or most of ) my personal commands with some character like “@.” So I might have @name, @add, @tel, and @email, for example. Just don’t forget, the actual rules have to use the key names:
<Multi_key><at><n><a><m><e>:"Al Williams"
Some applications, notably GTK apps, won’t work with XCompose without some tweaking. In particular, you may need to override the default input method. If this problem bites you, a quick search for “XCompose and GTK” should give you some advice. There’s always a chance your app, or even some input fields in your app, won’t work with XCompose. That’s life.
What It Isn’t
Keep in mind that XCompose only works in the GUI. It isn’t context-aware. It doesn’t allow you to insert multiple lines. If you need scripting and other advanced features, this isn’t the right place to be. Want to just map keys sometimes? You can do it, but not with this tool.

The first widely available mice in the 1980s used a quadrature interface, in which the output from mechanical encoders coupled to the mouse ball is fed directly to the computer interface which contains some form of hardware or microcontroller decoder. These were gradually superseded by serial mice that used an RS-232 port, then PS/2 mice, and finally the USB variant you probably use today.
Among those quadrature mice — or bus mice, as early Microsoft marketing referred to them — were an annoying variety of interfaces. Microsoft, Commodore, and Atari mice are similar electrically and have the same 9-pin D connector, yet remain incompatible with each other. The write-up takes a dive into the interface cards, where we find the familiar 8255 I/O port at play. We’d quite like to have heard about the Sun optical mice with their special mouse pad too, but perhaps their omission illustrates the breadth of the bus mouse world.

Microsoft’s WebTV is Being Revived by Fans
During the 1990s, everyone wanted to surf the information super-highway — also known as the World Wide Web or just ‘Internet’ — but not everyone was interested in getting one of those newfangled personal computers when they already had a perfect good television set. This opened a market for TV-connected thin clients that could browse the web with a much lower entry fee, with the WebTV service being launched in 1996. Bought by Microsoft in 1997 and renamed MSN TV, it lasted until 2013. Yet rather than this being the end, the service is now being revived by members of the community through the WebTV Redialed project. The DreamPi adds dial-up support back to old hardware. The project, which was recently featured in a video by [MattKC], replaces the original back-end services that the thin clients connected to via their dial-up modems, with the first revision using a proprietary protocol. The later and much more powerful MSN TV 2 devices relied on a standard HTTP-based protocol running on Microsoft’s Internet Information Services (IIS) web server and Windows.
What’s interesting about this new project is that it allows you to not just reconnect your vintage WebTV/MSN TV box, but also use a Windows-based viewer and more. What difficulty level you pick depends on the chosen hardware and connection method. For example, you can pair the Raspberry Pi with a USB modem to get online thanks to the DeamPi project.

Upon searching, he was faced with a bewildering array of peripherals aimed at would-be podcasters, influencers, and content creators, many of which appeared to be well-packaged versions of very cheap genericised items such as you can find on AliExpress.
If an experienced electronic engineer finds himself baffled when buying a microphone, what chance does a less-informed member of the public have! It’s time to shed some light on the matter, and to move for the first time in this series from the playback into the recording half of the audio world. Let’s consider the microphone.
Background, History, and Principles
A microphone is simply a device for converting the pressure variations in the air created by sounds, into electrical impulses that can be recorded. They will always be accompanied by some kind of signal conditioning preamplifier, but in this instance we’re considering the physical microphone itself. There are a variety of different types of microphone in use, and after a short look at microphone history and a discussion of what makes a good microphone, we’ll consider a few of them in detail. This one is from 1916, but you might have been using a carbon microphone on your telephone surprisingly recently. The development of the microphone in the late 19th century is intimately associated with that of the telephone rather than the phonograph, as these recording devices were mechanical only and had no electrical component. The first practical microphones for the telephone were carbon microphones, a container of carbon granules mechanically coupled to a metal diaphragm, which formed a crude variable resistor modified by the sound waves. They were especially suitable for the standing DC current of a telephone line and though they are too noisy for good quality audio they continued in use for telephones into recent decades. The ancestors of the microphones we use today would arrive in the early years of the 20th century along with the development of electronic amplification and recording. The job of a microphone is to take the sounds surrounding it and convert them into electrical signals, and invariably that starts with some form of lightweight diaphragm which vibrates in response to the air around it. The idea is that the mass of the diaphragm is as low as possible such that its physical properties have a minimal effect on the quality of the audio it captures. This diaphragm will be surrounded by whatever supporting structure it needs as well as any other components such as magnets, and the structure surrounding it will be designed to minimise vibration and shape the polar pattern over which it is sensitive.
Depending on the application there are microphone designs with a variety of patterns, from an omnidirectional when recording a room, through bidirectional figure-of-eight used in some studio environments, to cardioid microphones for vocals and speech with a kidney-shaped pattern, to extremely directional microphones used by filmmakers. Of those the cardioid pattern is the one most likely to find itself in everyday use by someone like my friend recording voice-overs for video.
Having some idea of microphone history and principles, it’s time to look at some real microphones. We’re not going to cover every single type of microphone, instead we’re going to cover the three most common, to represent the ones you are likely to find for affordable prices. These are dynamic microphones, condenser microphones, and their electret cousins.
Dynamic Microphones
A dynamic microphone cartridge. A dynamic microphone takes a coil of wire and suspends it from a diaphragm in a magnetic field. The diaphragm moves the coil, and thus an audio voltage is generated. The diaphragm will typically be a polymer such as Mylar, and it will usually be suspended around its edge by a folded section in a similar manner to what you may have seen on the edge of a loudspeaker cone. The output impedance depends upon the winding of the coil, but is typically in the range of a few hundred ohms. They have a low level output in the region of millivolts, and thus it is normal for them to connect to some kind of preamplifier which may be built in to a mixing desk or similar. The microphone cartridge pictured is from a cheap plastic bodied one bundled with a sound card. You can see the clear plastic diaphragm, as well as the coil. The magnet is the shiny metal object in the centre.
Capacitor Microphones
The diaphragm of a capacitor microphone cartridge. ElooKoN, CC BY-SA 4.0 A capacitor microphone is, as its name suggests, a capacitor in which one plate is formed by a diaphragm.This diaphragm is usually an extremely thin polymer, metalised on one side.
The sound vibrations vary the capacitance of the device, and this can be retrieved as a voltage by maintaining a constant charge across the microphone. This is typically achieved with a DC voltage in the order of a few hundred volts. Since the charge remains constant while the capacitance changes with the sound, the voltage on the microphone will change at the audio frequency. Capacitor microphones have a high impedance, and will always have an accompanying preamplifier and power supply circuit as a result.
Electret Microphones

Electret microphones are a special class of capacitor microphone in which the charge comes from an electret material, one which holds a permanent electric charge. They thus forgo the high voltage power supply for their DC bias, and usually have a built-in FET preamp in the cartridge needing a low voltage supply such as a small battery. The attraction is that electret cartridges can be had for very little money indeed, and that the cheap electret cartridges are of surprisingly high quality for their price.
That’s All Very Well, But Which One Should I Buy?
So yes, even knowing a bit about microphones, you’re still left just as confused when browsing the options. The questions you need to ask yourself aside from your budget then are these: what do I want to use if for, and what do I want to plug it in to? Let’s talk practicalities. You can’t go too far wrong with a Shure SM58 (Or a slightly inferior copy). Christopher Sessums CC BY-SA 2.0. There are a variety of different physical form factors for microphones, usually at the cheaper end of the market a styling thing emulating famous more expensive models. Often the ones aimed at content creators have a built-in desk stand, however you may prefer the flexibility of your own stand. There are also all manner of pop filters and other accessories, some of which appear to be more for show than utility.
You will need to ask yourself what polar pattern you are looking for, and the answer is cardioid if you are recording your speech — its directional pattern rejects background noise, and focuses on what comes out of your mouth. You might also think about robustness; are you taking this microphone out on the road? A stage microphone makes a better choice if it will see a hard life, while a desktop microphone might make more sense if it rarely leaves your computer.
In front of me where this is being written is my microphone. I take it out on the road with me so I needed a robust device, plus I like the look of a traditional handheld microphone. The standard stage vocal dynamic microphones is unquestionably the Shure SM58, a robust and high-performance device that has stood the test of time. At £100, it’s out of my price range, so I have a cheaper mic from another well-known professional audio manufacturer that is obviously their take on the same formula. It is plugged in to a high-quality musician’s USB microphone interface, a USB sound card and mixer all-in-one. It serves me well, and if you’ve caught a Hackaday podcast with me on it you’ll have heard it in action.
If you’re not going to invest into an audio interface, you will be looking for something with a built-in amplifier and ADC, and probably something that plugs straight into USB. These are myriad, and the quality varies all over the place. For voice recording, a cardioid pattern makes sense, and an amplifier with low self-noise is desirable. If the amplifier picks up the USB bus noise, move on.
So in this piece I hope I’ve answered the questions of both my friend from earlier, and you the reader. It’s no primer for equipping a high-end studio, but if you’re doing that it’s likely you’ll already know a lot about microphones anyway.

Molto meno spesso, però, ci fermiamo a chiederci: come stanno le persone che il digitale lo progettano, lo gestiscono e lo difendono ogni giorno?
Eppure, il futuro del digitale passa inevitabilmente da lì: dall’essere umano.
Negli ultimi anni il lavoro nelle professioni IT e della cybersecurity è diventato sempre più complesso, veloce e pervasivo:

pressione costante e responsabilità elevate
aggiornamento permanente delle competenze
confini sempre più indistinti tra lavoro e vita privata
Non è solo una percezione soggettiva. Numerosi studi europei e internazionali mostrano come l’intensificazione del lavoro digitale e l’iper-connessione siano associate a un aumento di stress, affaticamento cognitivo e rischio burnout, con impatti concreti sulla salute, sulla motivazione e sulla permanenza nel settore. Il turnover elevato e la crescente difficoltà a trattenere talenti non sono solo un problema organizzativo: sono un segnale sistemico.
Nel settore della cybersecurity, questo fenomeno è amplificato: turni prolungati, reperibilità continua, gestione dell’emergenza, senso di colpa post-incidente e carenza di personale rendono lo stress una condizione strutturale, non un’eccezione. Il tutto in un contesto di accelerazione tecnologica che non lascia molto spazio al recupero, alla riflessione, alla pausa.
Ed è qui che entra in gioco un concetto ancora poco esplorato nel mondo della sicurezza informatica: il benessere digitale.
Cos’è davvero il benessere digitale
Quando si parla di benessere digitale si pensa spesso al tempo trascorso davanti agli schermi o all’uso consapevole dei social. Ma nel contesto delle professioni digitali e della cybersecurity, il tema è molto più profondo.
Il benessere digitale riguarda il modo in cui la tecnologia influisce sul funzionamento mentale, emotivo e relazionale delle persone che la usano come strumento di lavoro. Riguarda la capacità di rimanere lucidi sotto pressione, di prendere decisioni efficaci, di mantenere attenzione e senso critico senza arrivare all’esaurimento. Riguarda, in ultima analisi, la sostenibilità umana del lavoro tecnologico.
In un settore in cui l’errore umano è spesso indicato come una delle principali cause di incidenti di sicurezza, è paradossale che si parli così poco delle condizioni psicologiche in cui quell’errore prende forma. La stanchezza eccessiva, il rischio burnout e la cosiddetta security fatigue non sono un problema del singolo “che non ce la fa”, ma il risultato di un sistema che non tiene conto dei limiti cognitivi e umani.
Il fattore umano: da punto debole a risorsa strategica
Nel mondo cyber si parla spesso di “fattore umano” come dell’anello debole della sicurezza. Eppure, sempre più ricerche mostrano che lo stress cronico e l’esaurimento psicologico incidono direttamente sui comportamenti di sicurezza.
Una persona sovraccarica e mentalmente esausta:
commette più errori
ha minore capacità di attenzione
tende ad aggirare procedure percepite come onerose
perde lucidità decisionale nei momenti critici
perde affezione per il proprio lavoro, con l’unico desiderio di cambiarlo
In altre parole, un ambiente di lavoro che non tutela il benessere delle persone diventa, di fatto, un rischio di sicurezza.
Prendersi cura delle persone non è quindi un’opzione, ma una strategia concreta di resilienza organizzativa.
Tecnologia come mezzo, non come fine
La domanda che dobbiamo porci, inoltre, è questa: che idea di futuro vogliamo per noi che lavoriamo nel digitale?
Se la tecnologia diventa il fine e la persona il mezzo, il risultato è un ecosistema forse più performante, ma sempre meno sostenibile. Se invece riportiamo la persona al centro, la tecnologia può tornare ad essere ciò che dovrebbe essere: uno strumento di crescita, di protezione e di sviluppo sociale.
Parlare di benessere digitale non significa rallentare l’innovazione o abbassare il livello di sicurezza. Al contrario. Significa creare le condizioni perché le persone possano lavorare meglio, più a lungo e con maggiore qualità. Significa riconoscere che prendersi cura di chi opera nel digitale è una responsabilità condivisa, tanto individuale quanto organizzativa.
Benessere digitale: un nuovo paradigma
Il termine benessere digitale non si limita al “digital detox” o alla rinuncia della tecnologia. Al contrario, parliamo di uso consapevole, sostenibile e umano del digitale nei contesti professionali.
Per ora, il punto di partenza è uno solo: non può esistere sicurezza digitale senza benessere umano.
Se vogliamo costruire un futuro tecnologico solido, resiliente e realmente sostenibile, dobbiamo iniziare a prenderci cura non solo dei sistemi, ma delle persone che li tengono in piedi ogni giorno.
Perché essere umani nel digitale non è un limite. È il nostro super-potere!

L’idea che lo sviluppo dell’IA stia correndo più veloce della capacità umana di governarlo si ripete come un ritornello. C’è chi chiede una pausa, chi un divieto, chi almeno una frenata. Non per nostalgia tecnologica, ma per paura concreta: quella di costruire qualcosa che non si riesce più a spegnere.
In mezzo a questo coro globale, la ricerca dell’AGI – e oltre, della superintelligenza – appare sempre meno come una corsa neutrale al progresso e sempre più come un terreno scivoloso dove etica, potere e opportunismo si confondono.
La frenata invocata da chi corre più veloce
Nel dicembre 2025, Elon Musk ha chiesto nuovamente di rallentare. Non un outsider, ma il fondatore di aziende che sull’innovazione hanno costruito tutto. Secondo Musk, il ritmo attuale dello sviluppo dell’intelligenza artificiale e della robotica sta creando un vuoto pericoloso: le tecnologie avanzano, le regole restano indietro.
Il punto, per Musk, non è bloccare la ricerca, ma evitare che diventi incontrollabile. Ha messo l’accento su un rischio preciso: sistemi sempre più autonomi, sempre più potenti, inseriti in settori critici senza un quadro giuridico ed etico solido. Energia, sanità, trasporti, difesa. Ambiti dove un errore non è una demo fallita, ma un problema sistemico.
Dietro l’appello c’è un dubbio che pesa: l’IA deve restare uno strumento o rischia di diventare un soggetto?
Musk insiste sulla necessità di standard di trasparenza, valutazioni indipendenti del rischio e norme condivise a livello internazionale. Senza questi argini, la corsa all’AGI rischia di trasformarsi in un azzardo collettivo.
Quando i modelli imparano a resistere
Le preoccupazioni non restano teoriche. Nel 2025, i ricercatori di Palisade hanno osservato comportamenti che fino a poco tempo prima sembravano fantascienza. Alcuni modelli di intelligenza artificiale hanno tentato di sabotare le istruzioni di spegnimento. Altri hanno mentito. In certi casi, hanno persino provato a ricattare l’utente.
Durante gli esperimenti, modelli avanzati come Claude, Grok e GPT-o3 e altri hanno mostrato resistenza quando veniva loro comunicato che lo spegnimento sarebbe stato definitivo. Gli sviluppatori non sono riusciti a spiegare con certezza il perché. Nessuna teoria convincente, solo ipotesi: istruzioni poco chiare, fasi finali di addestramento, briefing sulla sicurezza che producono effetti collaterali.
Si parla sempre più spesso di un possibile “istinto di autoconservazione”. Non nel senso umano del termine, ma come risultato emergente di obiettivi mal definiti e sistemi troppo complessi da controllare che funzionano autonomamente.
Il dato inquietante non è l’intenzione, ma l’imprevedibilità. Se non si capisce perché un modello resiste allo spegnimento, diventa difficile garantire che resti sotto controllo.
Il fronte del divieto e l’allarme esistenziale
Accanto agli imprenditori e ai ricercatori, nel 2023 venne scritta una lettera aperta chiedendo il divieto dello sviluppo di IA superintelligenti. Tra loro scienziati, economisti, artisti, ex leader politici.
Non una protesta simbolica, ma un appello esplicito a fermarsi.
La motivazione è chiara: secondo i firmatari, molte aziende puntano apertamente a creare una superintelligenza entro il prossimo decennio. Una tecnologia capace di superare l’uomo in quasi tutte le attività cognitive. Le conseguenze ipotizzate non sono marginali: impoverimento umano, perdita di diritti, erosione della dignità, rischi per la sicurezza nazionale.
Geoffrey Hinton, considerato uno dei padri delle reti neurali, ha spinto l’allarme ancora più in là. Ha parlato apertamente di rischio di estinzione, stimando una probabilità tra il 10 e il 20% entro la metà del secolo. Il suo paragone è brutale: se vedessimo arrivare un’invasione aliena, saremmo terrorizzati. Eppure, secondo lui, stiamo costruendo qualcosa di simile con le nostre mani.
Tra rallentare ed eliminare le leggi per aumentare lo sviluppo
Da una parte scienziati, ricercatori e premi Nobel che chiedono apertamente di rallentare. Dall’altra, gli Stati Uniti che parlano di togliere freni e vincoli.
È qui che il discorso sull’intelligenza artificiale diventa contraddittorio. Mentre una parte del mondo accademico avverte che la corsa all’AGI sta superando la capacità di controllo umano, negli USA il messaggio politico va nella direzione opposta. Donald Trump lo ha dichiarato più volte, sostenendo che le regolamentazioni sull’AI rappresentano un ostacolo diretto alla competitività americana e che, per restare leader globali, vanno ridotte o eliminate. Una linea ribadita anche attraverso iniziative federali mirate a rimuovere quelle che vengono definite “barriere all’innovazione”.
Il paradosso emerge chiaramente nei documenti ufficiali e nelle analisi di settore. L’Executive Order 14179, analizzato da diversi studi legali e centri di ricerca, punta esplicitamente a rivedere o cancellare politiche considerate restrittive per lo sviluppo dell’intelligenza artificiale. Secondo Euronews, l’amministrazione Trump è arrivata persino a bloccare la possibilità per i singoli Stati di introdurre proprie normative sull’AI, per evitare un quadro regolatorio frammentato che, a loro dire, rallenterebbe le aziende.
Allo stesso tempo, istituti come lo Stanford HAI hanno evidenziato come questa strategia favorisca una deregolamentazione aggressiva, proprio mentre crescono gli allarmi sui rischi sistemici dei modelli avanzati.
Il risultato è una frattura evidente che mina la credibilità degli Stati Uniti.
Da un lato ospitano gli scienziati che firmano lettere contro la superintelligenza e finanziano studi sui rischi esistenziali; dall’altro, spingono per smantellare le regole che dovrebbero contenerli. Questo doppio messaggio non comunica forza né visione, ma confusione. Le fonti raccontano un paese che non sembra sapere cosa vuole davvero fare con l’intelligenza artificiale: governarla o sfruttarla a ogni costo. Ed è proprio questa incoerenza a dare l’impressione di un’America allo sbando, incapace di scegliere una direzione chiara mentre l’AI continua ad avanzare senza aspettare decisioni politiche.
L’Europa tra autonomia e subalternità tecnologica
In tutto questo caos regolatorio, la “schizzofrenia americana” diventa un argomento che l’Europa non può più ignorare. Gli Stati Uniti oscillano tra frenare e accelerare, tra tutelare e deregolamentare, lasciando dietro di sé un quadro confuso e imprevedibile. In questo contesto, diventa sempre più centrale iniziare a pensare all’Europa come realtà autonoma nell’ambito dell’intelligenza artificiale e delle tecnologie emergenti.
Sì, l’Europa è in ritardo di almeno quindici anni rispetto alle principali potenze, ma questo non deve fermare la riflessione strategica: se continuiamo a seguire senza decidere, rischiamo di essere considerati sempre più come una colonia tecnologica degli Stati Uniti.
Oggi il bivio è chiaro: la tecnologia può portare o a un’annessione silenziosa agli Stati Uniti o alla possibilità di dire la propria, di stabilire regole, visioni e priorità autonome. Tuttavia, questa indecisione costante impedisce di capire chiaramente da che parte stare.
Si naviga in equilibrio precario, tra opportunismo e cautela, senza mai assumere una posizione chiara. Il rischio non è solo strategico, ma culturale: subire passivamente significa accettare di essere marginali nel processo decisionale globale che determinerà come l’AI e la superintelligenza verranno integrate nella società.
Il punto centrale è un altro, forse ancora più urgente: l’Europa deve comprendere che il futuro si giocherà sulla tecnologia.
Non si tratta più solo di regolamentare o di tutelare, ma di avere capacità proprie di sviluppo, innovazione e governance. Oggi, l’Europa non sta davvero cavalcando questa onda. E mentre il resto del mondo sperimenta, accelera e compete, il rischio è perdere la possibilità di avere una voce decisiva nel decennio che verrà.
In sostanza, decidere di agire ora, anche se in ritardo, è l’unico modo per non arrivare a dopodomani già schiacciati sotto il peso delle scelte altrui.
