Il padre Alcide era pacifista e cattolico. Si richiamarono sia al socialismo sia al cristianesimo. Contadini si dedicarono con grande passione allo studio e alla lettura, dichiaratamente antifascisti si prodigarono nel salvare ed aiutare soldati feriti (tra cui un sovietico).
Sua madre morirà di dolore pochi mesi dopo la loro fucilazione.
