Io uso e continuo a usare il mio server Matrix fatto in casa, che condivido con gli amici di snowfan.it, non lo mollo. Bitchat per me è un esperimento in più, utile in alcuni casi particolari.

Che cos’è Bitchat

Bitchat è un’app di messaggistica molto essenziale, fatta per scrivere e basta, con un sapore un po’ da vecchie chat in stile IRC.
Non ti chiede un numero di telefono, non ti chiede un account, installi e inizi.

Come funziona, l’idea in due righe

Bitchat ha due modi per far viaggiare i messaggi.

Vicino a te, via Bluetooth

Funziona anche senza Internet. I telefoni nelle vicinanze possono “passarsi” i messaggi tra loro, così la portata può aumentare un po’, però resta una cosa da distanze corte rispetto a Internet.

In modalità Bluetooth conta chi ti sta attorno

Se sei da solo o ci sono poche persone con l’app, c’è poco traffico. Se sei in un posto pieno, evento, fiera, concerto, allora ha più senso.

Non è la bacchetta magica contro i blocchi di rete

Se Internet viene tagliata del tutto, resta la parte Bluetooth, quindi comunicazione locale. Se Internet c’è, allora i relay Nostr aiutano a “uscire” dalla bolla locale.

Come si usa, passo passo

1. Installa l’app e aprila
In genere parti subito a scrivere, senza registrazione.

2. Prova una chat locale
È quella che funziona via Bluetooth, utile per parlare con persone relativamente vicine.

3. Prova canali per zona quando hai Internet
Oltre alla chat locale, esistono canali legati alla zona, tipo quartiere, città, regione, che passano tramite i relay Nostr.

4. Se ti piace lo stile IRC, trovi comandi rapidi
Ci sono comandi in stile IRC per alcune azioni, senza fronzoli.

BitChatExplorer, a cosa serve

C’è un sito chiamato BitChatExplorer che mostra attività e canali visibili sui relay Nostr, in pratica una mappa e un flusso pubblico di quello che sta girando online. È utile per capire se “c’è vita” e dove.

Every now and then, it’s time to tidy things up.

Version 7.9.0 is a spring-cleaning release: fewer rough edges, better defaults, and a lot of small improvements that make the plugin feel smoother and more predictable in daily use. No big rewrites — just many thoughtful fixes and refinements.

Instead of seeing placeholders like :sad_trombone:, federated posts now render the actual custom emoji they were meant to display. It’s a small detail, but one that makes conversations feel more human, and a lot less like reading raw markup.

A Healthier, More Predictable Setup 🩺

A quiet but important part of this release focuses on making things fail less often — and recover better when they do.

Version 7.9.0 adds new Site Health checks to detect common issues that can silently break federation, including missing scheduled events and security plugins blocking REST API access. When possible, the plugin now attempts to repair these problems automatically.

We also tightened up activity scheduling and outbox processing to reduce edge cases where federation could stall or behave inconsistently. These changes don’t add new buttons or screens, but they make ActivityPub for WordPress more resilient in real-world setups.

Following, Reading, and the Social Graph 👥

This release also includes a few improvements that move us one step closer to full Reader support — while keeping things deliberately cautious.

With the new Fediverse Following block and Extra Fields improvements, it’s now much easier to build a proper profile page in WordPress, similar to what many other Fediverse platforms offer. You can surface who you follow and how you present yourself, using blocks instead of custom code.

The Reader itself remains behind a feature flag and is still considered experimental. This release focuses on preparing the surrounding pieces — navigation, feedback, and presentation — rather than enabling it by default.

If you’re curious about where this is heading, you can enable the feature and try it out today. As with earlier previews, feedback is very welcome and helps shape what full Reader support will eventually look like. (See the initial Reader announcement for upgrade notes and details.)

7.8.0 – Happy Holidays

As the year winds down, we’ve wrapped up a release that brings better moderation tools, a new way to display reactions, and a small surprise, just in time for the holidays.
Stronger Tools for Moderation

Moderation can be hard work, especially on the Fediverse, where conversations flow in from all directions. This release introduces new tools that help you stay in control with less manual effort.
You can now subscribe to shared blocklists and let the plugin keep them up to date automatically. Subscribed lists are synced on a weekly cadence, so changes made upstream are reflected on your site without you having to lift a finger.

On top of that, we’ve added a bulk domain blocklist importer. You can upload a CSV or plain text file, including Mastodon-style exports, and quickly add large numbers of domains at once. To make it even easier to get started, the importer includes a one-click option for the popular community-maintained IFTAS DNI list (@about.iftas.org).

Together, these features make moderation more scalable and less stressful, so you can spend more time engaging and less time firefighting.
Reactions, Your Way

Reactions are a big part of how conversations feel alive on the Fediverse, and now you have more control over how they appear on your site.
The Fediverse Reactions block gained a new Summary display style. Instead of showing a facepile of avatars, this option presents reactions as clean, inline counters for comments, likes, boosts, and replies. It’s a great fit for minimal layouts, feeds, or sites where avatars are disabled.

You can switch between the classic facepile and the new summary style directly in the block settings. And if avatars are turned off in discussion settings, the block automatically falls back to the summary view.
A Sneak Peek at the Reader (Experimental)

One more thing, for the curious among you, there’s now an early preview of the ActivityPub Reader, hidden behind a feature flag in the Advanced settings tab. If you don’t see it yet, open Screen Options at the top right of the ActivityPub settings page, check “Advanced Settings,” and save. That reveals the Advanced tab where you can enable the Reader.

When enabled, this adds a new “Social Web” submenu to your Dashboard menu item. An place where you can read posts and shares from accounts you follow, turning your WordPress admin into a lightweight Fediverse reader.
Because this is still very much a work in progress, the Reader is disabled by default and clearly marked as experimental. The UI, behavior, and feature set will change significantly in future releases as we explore what a great native Fediverse reading experience inside WordPress could look like.
If you enjoy testing new ideas, we’d love to hear your feedback, whether it’s bug reports, rough edges you’ve noticed, or ideas about what this Reader should become. Early input helps shape where this goes next, so feel free to share your thoughts in whatever form works best for you.

Hi @activitypub.blog @pfefferle , the plugin is not publishing my blog (danstonchat.com) posts anymore on #actitiypub : @danstonchat.com

Last post here is from Jan 24, but since then, I published 4 posts on the website. They do not appear on any instance afaik.

The blog is hosted on wordpress.com (business plan) and always up-to-date.

Is there something I should check / do?

if should default to "Public", the only exception is if you edit an old post that was not federated before... do you have a plugin that might hook into the publishing process and add an old date before it gets published?

Yes, the thing is, my website is based on user generated content, so users can submit posts, they are in a queue as "pending", and then, if good enough, I edit and publish them.

I guess the "visibility" setting did not exist before, and it is set to "do not federate" for old posts or posts that are not public?

they will be federated through a WP_Cron, to not slow down publishing. If you have updated several posts at the same time, it can cause some delay in the process.

Designing a Compact RGB 14-Segment Display

Sometimes you’re looking for a component for a project that you know should exist, but you just cannot find it. Something like a 14-segment LED display, but not just one with a fixed color, instead you want some of that sweet addressable RGB-ness. Unfortunately for [EastMakes], this particular display was nowhere to be found, so he decided to try making his own.

Using addressable SK6805 RGB LEDs with a mere 1.5 x 1.5 footprint as the basis, the layout for these individual LEDs on the PCBs was determined, and a layout created in KiCad. The PCB manufacturing and assembly were straightforward enough — the thing that really makes these displays is the diffuser. Io , più sommessamente, ho trovato interessante e degna di esser ricordata questa frasetta:

Per due motivi:
- il primo è lapalissiano, il mondo sta accelerando (il problema è che non si capisce bene perchè, verso dove ecc. non avendo tempo di riflettere....e questo di solito porta male)

- il secondo lo trovo più interessante: si inizia a scrivere, non solo fra letterati e filosofi, che il mondo accelera CONTRO la sua volontà...speriamo sia un primo passettino.

Stiamo orgogliosamente mandando armi ad un paese invaso.
Ricordo che anche noi siamo stati invasi e siamo stati liberati grazie all'aiuto e il sacrificio di alleati (e partigiani). Non mi pare che abbiamo scacciato i nazisti a suon di pistole ad acqua.

Ricordo inoltre che l'Ucraina è un nostro confine esterno europeo, aiutandoli a respingere il nemico stiamo proteggendo noi stessi

strano, a me paiono due facce della stessa medaglia. Non è un'opinione personale ma un problema strutturale.
Invece di parlare di pace si parla ancora di guerra e forse, ma solo forse, si capisce anche il perché di tanta resistenza ai compromessi: una bella guerra è evidentemente economicamente più vantaggiosa di una brutta pace.
Quindi avanti tutta, ucraini carne da macello e fabbriche all’UE che (forse) paga due volte.

What I think about a fair bit is an ap implementation that was totally ephemeral. This might be unpopular but the idea of social media posts lasting forever is not actually a good thing, and I don't just mean because bad people datamine them for bad purposes, I mean the attitude it creates in how we approach it. I wonder if overall interactions on these kinds of sites work better when we feel like they are just an in the moment conversation and not a permanent testament and everlasting record.

There were some blockchain based chat and social network attempts 10 years ago that I avoided like the plague for exactly this reason.

For almost all of human history and prehistory, information has been ephemeral. Permanence was hard and error prone: storytelling, poems. Writing was recent, widespread literacy was yesterday, and the internet and big data is like seconds ago.

Maybe we overdid it.

It takes a lot of focus and discipline to sacrifice yourself (sometimes literally) that way. MLK and Gandhi both wrote and spoke about it at length if you want to learn more. Note that both were inspired (or maybe even restricted) by the pacifism of their respective religions; MLK's day job was being a minister, after all.

It for sure isn't for everyone. It'll take all kinds of tactics to win; nonviolence is only one of many paths.

@bamfic Not only Gandhi or MLK, the thing is that their followers also (mostly?) did this, too.

And it occurs to me that just as training a person to kill is a very hard thing to do if you aren't a psychopath, and soldiers must train extensively for that, the opposite must also be true. You train and you think and you face the violence.

And... it doesn't really make sense if you haven't done the work. The spirit rebels.

If you expect privacy or anonymity, Meshtastic is a danger to that, and you should not use it.

This is your regular reminder that Meshtastic is designed badly and is effectively a straight up non-anonymized wireless tracking beacon which can be intercepted and tracked by anyone with a smidgen of technical knowhow.

Resetting your devices identity or reloading the Meshtastic firmware does not help, because Meshtastic encodes the hardware MAC address of your device's radio unencrypted into every packet sent, including on-by-default telemetry packets which are sent regularly without any user interaction.

Many of these packets are intercepted and recorded by a myriad of MQTT observers around the world that other Meshtasic users have set up to log mesh traffic to the internet.

Airport runways seem pretty simple, just another strip of asphalt or concrete not unlike the roads that our cars drive upon every day. We can even use these same highways as landing strips in a pinch, so you’d assume that the engineering for either isn’t that dissimilar. When you consider that an Airbus A380 the take-off weight is up to 550 ton, it’s quite clear what the challenge is for larger airports. Another major issue is that of friction, or lack thereof, as the speeds and kinetic energy behind it are so much higher. One only has to look at not only runway overruns but also when one skids off sideways due issues like hydroplaning and uneven friction. Keeping the surface of a runway as high-friction as possible and intact after hundreds of take-offs, tail-strikes and other events is no small feat.

Of course, the other part of runway engineering is for when things do go wrong and an airplane enters the runway safety areas, or overrun zones. This usually provides some flat and clear space where an airplane can safely bleed off its kinetic energy, with the collapsing surface of the EMAS technology being one of the best demonstrations of how this can be safely and dramatically shortened.

Another aspect not covered here that is part of these overrun zones are frangible structures, such as any localizer antennae of ILS, lighting, etc. Frangible here means that the structure easily collapses when a heavy airplane crashes into it without causing significant damage to the airplane.

It was the failure of such a design process that doomed the crew and passengers of Jeju Air Flight 2216 in December of 2024, when the airplane during an emergency belly landing skidded over the end of the runway. Although there was a lot of open space after the ILS localizer array with just a flimsy wall and further level fields, the ILS array’s base contained a poured concrete base on which the airplane effectively pulverized.

All the current LLM coding agents build on advanced anti-bot measure evasion features that were initially designed by humans to solve the insane "grab all the things" problem LLM models have had. Now, nothing is safe on the Web, and you don't know what half-assed vibe-coded application will pummel senseless the websites you host for little to no reason as long as tokens run.

A few years ago I used to find it cute in Cyberpunk 2077 that the Internet fell to rogue AIs and that the only way to be safe was local-only networks. Seeing the scale and the race to add more computing power towards an ill-defined AI infrastructure wrecking havoc on all public web spaces, I'm not so sure anymore.

What if Google/Meta/OpenAI simply don't want to pull the plug if one of their creation finally glasses the open Web because they are afraid of dropping their share price? Corporations' action are so little connected to the real world it sounds like a plausible scenario.

My home server also suffered this week from literal DDoS attacks from AI companies. Looks like I was able to mitigate it by blocking access to a few expensive endpoints, but it hurts to see how we cannot just host anything on the web nowadays and how AI companies are *never* held accountable.

On a different note, this conversation is about backend tasks of LLM's.
What about us as front end real life people who will be bombarded by unumerous AI-Profiles posing in a never ending story of what evers fighting for our attention. SPAM and it's consquences already more or less rounded up the email world, isolaiting all those of us who still try to host their own email domain. From there we can eaily envision what will happen to the fedi, the more it thrives the worst this wil get. Quite soon we might have to switch to "parallel whitelisted meshes eddevelop out of necessity", don't we?

Building a Self-Playing Chess Board Robot

As popular as the game of chess is, it has one massive flaw. This being that it requires two participants, which can be a challenge. Although playing chess on a computer against an AI has been a thing for many decades, it’s hard to beat physical chess boards that give you all the tactile pleasure of handling and moving pieces, yet merging the two is tricky. You can either tell the player to also move the opponent’s pieces, or use a mechanism to do so yourself, which [Joshua Stanley] recently demonstrated in a video.

There are a few ways that you can go about having the computer move and detect the pieces. Here [Joshua] chose to use Hall magnetic sensors to detect the magnets that are embedded in the 3D printed chess pieces as well as their absence. These sensors are mounted to the back sid

Building a Self-Playing Chess Board Robot

For the electromagnet that moves the chess pieces core x/y kinematics were used to move it underneath the PCB, engaging when moving pieces but otherwise deactivated. This is all controlled by an ESP32 MCU, while the computer runs the open-source Stockfish chess engine. As the human player changes piece positions this is detected by the magnet’s presence, with the change input into Stockfish.

As the demonstration at the end of the video shows, it definitely works, yet some issues remain. Ignoring the mistake with making the near-right corners black instead of white, the pieces are large enough that e.g. moving a knight piece between others pushes them to the side, requiring these to be put back in place.

There is also no way for the computer to detect which piece is placed where, which can be incredibly helpful on some commercial self-playing chess boards like this for new players, as well as to detect invalid moves, but this might be on the list for a potential V2 of this build.

Best part of this build is probably the use of a PCB for the playing field, which would allow you to go pretty crazy with custom designs and colors, especially now that some PCB places are offering multi-color silkscreens that allow for custom graphics.

Is That Ancient Reel Of PLA Any Good?

When it comes to knowledge there are things you know as facts because you have experienced them yourself or had them verified by a reputable source, and there are things that you know because they are common knowledge but unverified. The former are facts, such as that a 100mm cube of water contains a litre of the stuff, while the latter are received opinions, such as the belief among Americans that British people have poor dental care. The first is a verifiable fact, while the second is subjective.

In our line there are similar received opinions, and one of them is that you shouldn’t print with old 3D printing filament because it will ruin the quality of your print. This is one I can now verify for myself, because I was recently given a part roll of blue PLA from a hackerspace, that’s over a decade old. Is That Ancient Reel Of PLA Any Good?

It Ain’t Stringy

In the first instance, looking at the filament, it looks like any other filament. No fading of the colour, no cracking, if I didn’t know its age it could have been opened within the last few weeks. It loads into the printer, a Prusa Mini, fine, it’s not brittle, and I’m ready to print a Benchy.

My first surprise on printing the Benchy is that it’s a pretty good print. Received Opinion tells me that PLA is hydrophobic, and if you leave some out for a decade it will absorb so much moisture as to be unusable. In fact I was expecting a very stringy print indeed because I’ve seen that before with filament left out for about a year in the damp British climate. But this Benchy had almost no hairiness, its only flaw was a little bit of collapse along its prow line. I know the Mini isn’t at fault here as I’ve seen it print a flawless Benchy with new PLA, so that’s strike one to the ancient plastic.

Manipulating the Benchy, I found strike two. This is a reasonable print, but with not-too-hard pressure on the cabin I could snap it. The layer adhesion wasn’t as much as it is with a new-filament Benchy, and it has broken cleanly along the layer lines in the cabin pillars. Since snapping a Benchy isn’t a quantitative measure of how much the layer adhesion had degraded, I decided to formulate a test for layer adhesion. If I print something designed for measuring layer adhesion failure in both this old PLA and some new PLA, I can compare the two. It’s not perfect as I don’t have a new reel of the same formulation as the old stuff, but it’ll be close enough.

Punishing Prints, And Risking Holes In The Floor

What I have come up with is a 150 mm long box section with a 2 mm wall. If I clamp the first 5 0mm to the edge of a table, I can apply a force to the far end of the 100 mm poking out into free space, and find its breaking point. To that end I’ve printed two, one in my blue old PLA, and another in brand new grey PLA. I’m dangling a collection of angle brackets each of which weighs 130 g from the end of the box section, and adding brackets until it breaks.
I couldn’t even break the new filament print with a floor-damaging 3Kg piece of rail!
I had only twenty brackets, and as expected the old PLA broke first, at ten brackets, or a 1.3 kg load. My back of the envelope calculation from high school physics gives me about a 130 N force on the top edge of the layer boundary over the fulcrum on the edge of the table to do this. I ran out of brackets and other hardware to try to break the grey box section, and finally admitted defeat when it refused to break with a 3 kg piece of rail I’ve been hoarding to make an anvil dangling from its end. I have proved that layer adhesion with ancient PLA is more than three times weaker than on the same printer with new PLA. It’s interesting when examining the break, the layers have parted very cleanly, this is not tearing of the PLA but simply poor adhesion between layers.

In doing these experiments I’ve discovered, not unexpectedly, that ancient PLA isn’t as good as new PLA. I am assuming that this was as good a PLA as the modern stuff when it was new — indeed I remember printing back in the day and my prints seemed just as good as today. What does surprise me though is that how it’s deteriorated isn’t what I expected. It produces good prints in terms of their physical form, without the hairiness I was expecting. In turn I didn’t expect the prints with this stuff to be weak, so what’s going on?

When The Volatiles Depart, What’s Left?

PLA filament is not pure PLA, instead it has chemicals added to modify its properties. The most obvious one in this reel is the blue pigment, but others might modify its plasticity or melting characteristics, to name two possibilities. These are not going to be stable solids like the polymer, instead they will be volatile compounds which are capable of evaporating over time.

I’m no polymer chemist, so I’ll draw my engineer’s conclusions here and prepare for a roasting from the chemists if I’m wrong. What I think has happened is that the volatile additives in the filament have departed over the years, and both the stringiness in damp newer PLA and the strength in prints made with new PLA are as much due to their presence or absence as to the PLA itself. In my tests here I think I have seen something closer to PLA alone with the additive chemistry absent, and along the way I may have touched on why the manufacturers add it in the first place.

It’s likely few of you are printing using ancient PLA, so while interesting, these results have limited direct relevance to your printing. But I have to wonder whether there’s a lesson to be learned in filament storage, and perhaps using a warm environment to stave off moisture might hasten the departure of those volatiles. Perhaps the best thing is not to be a hoarder, and to use your filament up as quickly as you can. Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time we’ve ventured into backyard physical measurements.
