Italian authorities detained in the Italian port of Brindisi a bulk carrier belonging to Russia‘s shadow fleet. In violation of sanctions imposed against Russia the ship is transporting 33,000 tons of ferrous metal.

This is reported by „La Repubblica“. The report does not say the name of the ship, but I believe it is the „Hizir Reis“ (9180360).

Ello sweet and lovely (reading) Friendos

The last two months, I've been caught up reading again! At times where my body needed to relax, recharge, but my brain was still looking to be entertained... I got back to reading more again. 😊

Halfway through November, I learned about the new Dan Brown book in his Robert Langdon series. It had been a while since I read his books, so I set off, starting with Angels & Demons.
At the end of December, I finished the 6th book, the Secret of Secrets. I read another Dan Brown book after that, Deception Point.

I finished it yesterday. But now... As I started it at the end of December, is this my last finished book of 2025? Or is it the first one of 2026?

I've never really tracked my reading, but I thought it may be nice to make a thread this year, pinning 📌 it to my profile, and adding the books that I've managed to finish in

After reading all 6 Robert Langdon series books in order, I wanted to read some more Dan Brown. So, I opened Deception Point...

The style is the same as the Langdon books. Mysterious, with some real info in it to make it all more credible (and creative), and slowly building to a surprising end!

Even though I had read the book several times before, it had been a while and most of the details were a little lost on me, making this read still a very exciting one.

I sometimes see this book, and Digital Fortress, mentioned with "Robert Langdon" series, and while it's a book by Dan Brown, there's nothing with Langdon's symbolism in it...

Many years ago, when bookstores were still a "thing", I always browsed the English books section. At some point, I stumbled on this book. It sounded interesting, so I bought it. The Story: "Storm Front"
In this first novel, we meet Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only "wizard-for-hire." Harry isn't hiding in a castle; he’s in the Yellow Pages under "Wizards," right between Window Cleaners and Women’s Apparel.

The Hook: Harry is struggling to pay his rent when the Chicago P.D. calls him in to consult on a gruesome double murder. The victims were killed using powerful black magic—their hearts literally exploded.

The World: Magic is real, but the "normal" world chooses not to see it. Harry lives in a basement apartment, drives a beat-up Volkswagen Beetle (the "Blue Beetle"), and can’t use modern technology because his magical aura causes electronics to short-circuit.

The Supporting Cast: You’ll meet a cast of recurring characters, including Karrin Murphy (the tough-as-nails police lieutenant), Bob (a spirit of intellect who lives in a skull), and various factions of vampires and faeries.

Progression: Many fans agree that while the first two books are fun, the series truly "levels up" starting with book 3 (Grave Peril), where the world-building expands significantly and the consequences of Harry’s actions start to ripple across the entire globe.

Fun Fact: If you notice the hat on the cover, it’s a long-running joke among fans. Harry almost never wears a hat in the actual books, but the cover artists keep giving him one!

Moxie Marlinspike, l’ingegnere dietro Signal, sta testando un nuovo progetto: Confer, un assistente basato su intelligenza artificiale con crittografia end-to-end. L’idea è quella di applicare agli LLM lo stesso approccio che ha reso Signal un riferimento per la messaggistica privata.

Confer si basa su due elementi principali: le passkey, che oltre all’autenticazione permettono di derivare le chiavi crittografiche (conservate solo sul dispositivo), e un ambiente di esecuzione fidato (TEE) lato server, dove i dati vengono elaborati in forma cifrata senza che nemmeno gli amministratori possano accedervi.

Perché serve un’alternativa

Come riporta Ars Technica, lo scorso maggio un tribunale ha ordinato a OpenAI di conservare tutti i log delle conversazioni su ChatGPT, incluse quelle cancellate. Sam Altman stesso d’altronde ha ammesso che neppure le sessioni di psicoterapia sulla piattaforma possono considerarsi davvero private. Marlinspike descrive l’uso attuale dell’IA come “confessarsi in un lago di dati”: gli utenti tendono a trattare questi assistenti come confidenti, condividendo pensieri, paure e informazioni sensibili.

Esistono anche altre soluzioni orientate alla privacy, come Lumo di , che cifra le conversazioni a riposo con lo stesso sistema di Proton Mail (anche se l’LLM elabora i messaggi in chiaro prima di “dimenticarli”). L’approccio di Confer con i TEE è tecnicamente diverso e, almeno sulla carta, più robusto.

Tra le alternative c’è anche Venice, che adotta un approccio più radicale: non conserva nulla sui propri server, salvando le conversazioni esclusivamente nel browser dell’utente. Il limite? La GPU che elabora le richieste vede comunque i prompt in chiaro d ci si deve fidare che non vengano loggati.

Confer è attualmente in fase di test ed è accessibile via browser (le passkey per l’autenticazione funzionano nativamente su macOS, iOS e Android, mentre su Windows e Linux serve qualche passaggio in più).

Yesterday, January 16, at 1:30 p.m. Kyiv time, Italian Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets took off from the Ämari Air Base in Estonia.

This was reported by NATO Air Command.

They intercepted a russian Be-200PS search and rescue aircraft of the russian Navy approaching the Baltic Sea.

The Be-200 is a jet amphibious aircraft capable of taking off and landing on both land and water.

I lost a friend over my article about the murder of Renee Nicole Good.

He was angry I called out the underlying misogyny.

He was mad I didn’t give ICE the benefit of the doubt.

He made it personal.

He told me my “stupid clown hair” is why people don’t take me seriously

Everything he said to me was dripping with disdain and misogyny.

There was no debate.

There was no respectful disagreement.

In under five minutes he had attacked my intelligence, my politics, my appearance and my writing.

This is not normal behaviour.

He literally proved my point.

Had I taken the bait I’m convinced that I would have been called a “f*cking b*tch” by the end of the conversation.

This is what MAGA is doing to men.

It’s emboldening them.

It’s validating their bigotry.

I assume this person was always hateful and misogynistic on some level … but now he no longer feels he has to hide it.

He literally said as much.

An important PSA for people who are active on #Bluesky and who, upon hearing that the ICE account was officially verified, are saying: "I will just block it."

Blocking on Bluesky is NOT PRIVATE: it's very easy to see who is blocking any account by visiting sites that list that information.

I took a screenshot from clearsky.app, listing all the accounts that are blocking ICE (I pixelated avatars and usernames for privacy purposes).

The safest bet is to mute (that info is private) 😫

I'm well aware that posting this info on the Fediverse seems like a pointless exercise, but it's to raise awareness and spread the word to people active in BOTH places.

I was never really active on #Bluesky and entirely stopped using it months ago but there's no point in posting this info there because I have zero reach. Or rather: 1100+ followers and 1-2 likes (at best!) and zero comments for any post. It's like I'm shadow-banned.

@pfefferle hallo zusammen und danke an @pfefferle und alle weiteren beteiligten Entwickelnden, find das Plugin auch echt spitze und find‘s sehr magisch, dass ich die Beiträge von @stadtteilzentrum jetzt immer einfach in den Mastodonfeed gespült bekomme. Eine Frage hätte ich dennoch: Kann/könnte man es irgendwie konfigurieren/konfigurierbar oder gar zum default machen, dass Beitragsbilder eines Posts auch auf Pixelfed erscheinen? :)

@pfefferle @stadtteilzentrum das wäre eben @stadtteilzentrum …auf mastodon kommen alle posts an, auf pixelfed bisher nur einer. Ich hätte gerade mal in den Einstellungen geguckt, aber dort nichts gefunden, was in meinen Augen dafür verantwortlich sein könnte ..vll hast Du ja ne Idee, ansonsten auch nicht so schlimm! Danke auf jeden Fall schonmal :)

@stadtteilzentrum Ich befürchte, das liegt an der Föderierungspolitik von Pixelfed selber. Bei meinem Blog hat alles gut funktioniert, aber dann habe ich mal den Provider gewechselt und seitdem gibt es eine Föderation der Beiträge überall im Fediverse nur nicht mehr auf Pixelfed. 🤷

An intelligence assessment provided to the British military revealed a 1:27 kill ratio in the battle for Kupiansk, with 27 Russian soldiers lost for each Ukrainian. This assessment was shared during a briefing with Ukrainian officials last week, highlighting Kyiv’s ability to reclaim territory despite Russia’s ‘meat grinder’ tactics. An illustration on how #Russia practice of “borrowed liberation” works - here’s a StorMap channel marked actual cases of Russian “flag planting”, either by drones or by disposable soldiers. Once the flag is filmed, report goes upstream that the location is “liberated”, end of story. In reality the location is not controlled by Russian forces, who may be completely absent from the area but since it was already reported upstream, it’s causing tons of problems to the actual troops on the ground - why, I will write in another post.

And this is no longer just a ‘line of drones’. Now, for example, we are seeing tactical manoeuvres of this type: their artillery is positioned deep within their battle formations, beyond the reach of our main UAVs, and is keeping their own front line and key targets on it well under fire.

He’s referring to a good practice of all artillery units to keep a well-documented and tested list of key target locations along with all necessary adjustments and coefficients which make it possible to target a particular location instantly, without iterative correction process.When Ukrainian army gradually retreats, important job of artillery commanders is to record all such locations and maintain them on the new positions.

Accordingly, as soon as our forces begin to move, knock out some enemy stronghold with drones and go to capture it, the enemy waits for the moment when they enter and takes it out along with those who entered. And their drone operators, accordingly, not only habitually harass supply and delivery routes, but also catch our troops on any activity near their ‘former’ facilities. I would add to this continuous mining, including remote mining, and the active use of ‘zhduns’ on the few (and well-monitored) logistics lines. If our guys try to bring up the second echelon as quickly as possible — the same UAV operators, for example — then the enemy makes a local tactical ‘offensive’ and, even losing equipment and people, achieves its goal: it maintains a ‘kill zone’ between our front line and the nearest rear. In Kupyansk, they successfully used this tactic several times, which led to the current situation there.
Since the situation is repeating itself more than once or twice, our troops, at all levels, are less and less willing to attack at all, and they are very understandable — this is an inevitable trade-off of kilometres travelled for lives, and the lives of very valuable fighters at that: those who, in principle, know and are able to act in this very kill zone (untrained soldiers will simply lie down there without any result). Therefore, the problem of ‘colouring the maps’ is not just about staff lies. It is also about the difficult moral choice that commanders make: if I really go all out now in an unprepared offensive, I will lose a lot of people, but if I just send a few teams forward to capture the flag and report back with drone footage of our physical presence at the necessary lines, I will save people and equipment.
Another thing is that this leads to situations where it is impossible to request strikes on positions that have already been ‘coloured in’ (i.e. marked as ‘ours’ on headquarters maps) — neither with artillery, nor with air strikes, nor even with those same drones. Everything there is already ours! And as a result, we still have to pay with lives.

DIY, Full-Stack Farm Automation

Recently, [Vinnie] aka [vinthewrench] moved from Oregon to Arkansas to start a farmstead. This is a style of farming that focuses not just on a profitable farm where produce is sold at market, but also on a homestead where much of one’s own food is grown on the farm as well. Like any farm, though, it’s extremely hard work that takes a tremendous amount of time. Automation and other technology can make a huge impact in these situations, and [Vinnie] is rolling out his own software stack to help with this on his farm.

DIY, Full-Stack Farm Automation

He calls his project the Pi Internet of Things, or PioT, and as its name suggests is based around the Raspberry Pi. Since this will all be outdoors and exposed to the extremes of Arkansas weather, everything built under the auspices of this project prioritizes ruggedness, stability, and long-term support, all while avoiding any cloud service. The system also focuses on being able to ride through power outages. The server side, called piotserver, uses a REST API to give the user access to the automation systems through a web interface

[Vinnie] also goes into detail about why existing systems like Home Assistant and Open Sprinkler wouldn’t work in his situation, and why a ground-up solution like this is more appropriate for his farm. This post is largely an overview of his system, but some of his other posts go into more detail about things like integrating temperature sensors, rainfall monitoring, controlling irrigation systems, and plenty of other farm automation tasks that are useful for any farmer or gardener.

We’ve also seen some other projects of his here like this project which converts a common AC sprinkler system to an easier-to-use DC system, and a DIY weather station that operates in the 915 MHz band. He’s been a great resource for anyone looking to have technology help them out with their farm or garden, but if you’re just getting started on your green thumb be sure to take a look at this starter guide as well.

Testing a Continuous Printing Mod for the Bambu Lab A1 Mini

There are a few types of continuous 3D printing with FDM printers, with a conveyer belt and automatic build plate swapping the most common types. The advantage of build plate swapping is that it automates the bit where normally a human would have to come in to remove finished parts from the build plate. Testing a Continuous Printing Mod for the Bambu Lab A1 Mini

As also noted in the review video, this is effectively a clone of the original swapmod A1m kit, but a big difference is that the Chitu kit comes with all of the parts and doesn’t require you to print anything yourself.

The different plates are prepared using a special tool that inserts G-code between the plate changes. Moving the bed in a specific way triggers the switch that lifts the finished plate off the magnetic bed by the plastic grip on the plate and loads a fresh plate from the stack. Here it was found that a small tolerance issue prevented the last plate from being used, but some sandpaper fixed this. Other than that it was a fairly painless experience, and for e.g. multi-color prints with separated colors – as demonstrated – it would seem to be a great way to churn out the entire model without manual intervention or a lot of wasted filament.

Perhaps the main issue that is central to all of these build plate swap mods is where the plates go after they’re pulled off the magnetic bed: the padded box is a great idea for the first one or two plates, but after that you get your PEI build plates with parts on them crashing on top of each other.

This is where perhaps something like a passive roller conveyer system could provide a nice gentle off-ramp, though this too would increase the footprint of the system. Regardless, the overall system seems to work well enough, allowing one to stack fresh plates in the chute and if you turn on build plate detection in the A1 you can even prevent the printer from trying to print on the magnetic bed.

È assurdo che nelle nostre scuole accadano fatti del genere, è inaccettabile che in un luogo come la scuola, tra ragazzi di questa età, tra gli insegnanti, possano succedere fatti di tale imponenza criminale da lasciare tutti noi attoniti, impotenti, basiti.
E increduli.
Non si può morire a diciotto anni. Non si deve uccidere a diciotto anni. E non solo perché si è troppo giovani per morire e troppo giovani per uccidere; non si può perché non è umano, nel nostro contesto civile, condannare a morte con un messaggio sullo smartphone il proprio compagno di scuola il giorno prima, e il giorno successivo ucciderlo senza che ci sia stato nessuno in grado di intercettare delle intenzioni così gravi; senza che neppure uno, tra gli insegnanti, sia stato capace di accorgersi della lite tra i due ragazzi, e prevenire la disgrazia che invece c'è stata.
Non è possibile, ed è insostenibile qualunque giustificazione, qualsiasi scusa, qualunque movente, qualsiasi assurda ragione che si possa o si voglia dare per sentirsi a posto con la coscienza, che avvengano fatti del genere. Addirittura in una scuola. Fatti in cui l'umanità viene completamente dichiarata persa, declassata a mera bestialità, annientata dalla brutalità disumana del sangue innocente che scorre tra i banchi.
Ed è una grave sirena di allarme che tutto ciò sia successo nelle nostre scuole e tra la nostra gente. In un posto dove nell'irresponsabilità generale — e nell'attuale classe politica — si tende volentieri a spacciare un omicidio per legittima difesa, dove un sinti dovrebbe aver meno valore di un italiano, dove si esaltano gli atteggiamenti divisivi e di discriminazione verso maranza e rom, e dove si credono risolti tutti i problemi con un inutile sgombero e qualche maldestro tentativo di espulsione.
Un giovane è morto. I nostri giovani muoiono, vittime di una società inadeguata al loro cammino futuro e priva di leggi efficaci che riescano a impedire le disgrazie che accadono. E per questo abbiamo tutti fallito.
Abbiamo perso.
Ci resta la profonda tristezza per questa giovane vita strappata alla vita. E il dolore per i suoi genitori in preda a chissà quanta disperazione, così come per il ragazzo che lo ha ucciso. Proprio per quest'ultimo, ormai, c'è da pregare; affinché la sua anima non si perda dopo un gesto così efferato e irresponsabile, affinché non prevalga l'odio.
Perché di odio potrebbe morire anche lui.
Perché potremmo perdere anche lui, fallendo un'altra volta.
Non sappiamo più cos'è la vita. Né sappiamo più quello che vale, il prezzo che costa perderla, e il grande dono che è. Non abbiamo più piena coscienza del grande progetto di Dio che tutti quanti siamo.
Né sappiamo più cos'è la pietà, cosa siano la carità e la misericordia.
E non sappiamo insegnarlo ai giovani, soprattutto.

Following up on user-reported cases of Battle Born LiFePO4 batteries displaying very hot positive terminals, [Will Prowse] decided to buy a brand new one of these LFP batteries for some controlled cycle testing.

Starting with 30 cycles with a charging current of 49 A and a discharge current of 99 A, this put it well within the 100 A continuous rating for the battery. There is also a surge current rating of 200 A for thirty seconds, but that was not tested here.

@T2R yeah, I feel like we’ve been spared a lot of the pain other parts of the country have seen on their electric bills, but our time is apparently coming. We did just add a bit of tension to the Georgia PSC, but still not a majority, plus I’m pretty sure Georgia Power owns most of the state level politicians anyway.

they own the politicians because of Citizens United. We’ve had a few data centers move in here any the utility company immediately asked for a 30% rate hike and blamed it on “wildfires”. We haven’t had any utility caused wildfires here and it was reduced to about 5%/yr for the next few years and only like 20% total to hide it from us. Our politicians are also owned.
