What have African American people - because that’s specifically what 13/52 refers to - have to do with “kikes” and Russia is well beyond me, but I guess that’s the kind of brain rot you’re experiencing from overexposure to Russian xenophobia.

It reminds me a bit of how in 2020-2021 #COVID19 #Russia was pumping anti-vaxx propaganda through their language RT editions in foreign languages while RT in Russian was doing something entirely opposite - promoting “Sputnik” vaccine. Russians were paranoid enough to know, when RT in Russian says one thing, they need to verify it at other sources, and they verified at all the Western anti-vaxx blogs that flourished for RT money.. and translated the anti-vaxx bullshit back into Russian, driving down their own vaccination rates 🤦

Memory at the Speed of Light

Look inside a science fiction computer, and you’ll probably see tubes and cubes that emit light. Of course, it’s for effect, but the truth is, people do think light computing may be the final frontier of classical computing power. Engineers at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute and the University of Wisconsin-Madison are showing off a workable photonic latch — a memory element that uses light.

The device uses a commercial process (GlobalFoundries (GF) Fotonix Silicon Photonics platform) and, like a DRAM, regenerates periodically to prevent loss of the memory contents.

On the device, you’ll find a combination of tiny photodiodes, micro-ring resonators, and optical waveguides. Simulations show the memory element can operate at 20 GHz and might even be readable at 50 or 60 GHz.

This is one of those fun hacks that come about from finding a product and going “I wonder if I could…” — in this case, artist/YouTuber [Wesley Treat] found out his favourite vendor makes spray cans in CYMK colours– that is the Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and blacK required for subtractive printing. Which got him wondering: can I make full-colour prints with this paint?
The MDF-based print, with naive half-tone dots.
His answer was “yes”, and the process to do so is fairly simple. First, split the image into colour channels, generate a half-tone pattern for each one, and carve it out of MDF on the laser. Then spray the MDF with the appropriate colour spray paint. Press the page against each block in turn, and voila! A full colour print block print, albeit at very low DPI compared to your average inkjet.

Now, you might be wondering, why half-tone instead of mixing? Well, it turns out that these CYMK paints are too opaque for that to work in a block-printing process. At least with a naive spray technique; [Weseley] does admit a very fine mist might be able to make that work. The second question is why not just hook the rattle cans into a CNC machine for a paint-based mega inkjet? That’s a great question and we hope someone tries it, but [Weseley] evidently likes block-printing so he tried that first.

Laser-ablating enough MDF away to make decent print blocks took too long for [Weseley]’s tastes, however, so he switched to using mylar stencils. Instead of spraying a block and pressing onto it, the paint is sprayed through the stencil. The 10 mil Mylar not only cuts faster, but can support finer detail. Though the resulting prints loose some of the artistic flair the inconsistencies block printing brings, it probably looks better.

If you prefer to skip the manual paint-can-handling, perhaps we can interest you in a spray-can plotter. If you do like manually flinging paint, perhaps you could try this dot-painting spray can attachment, for a more self-directed half-tone.

L'energia si conserva, giusto?
Quindi, se con una certa metratura di pannelli solari io catturo una certa quantità di fotoni ad alta frequenza convertendone l'energia in elettricità; prima o poi dovrò dissipare quella stessa energia sotto forma di fotoni a frequenza più bassa.

Al primo sguardo non mi sembra che ci sia molta differenza sulla base di quel che ne faccio, alimentarci una stazione spaziale o un grappolo di processori più o meno mi sembra lo stesso. In ogni caso alla fine avrò tanto calore da dissipare quanta era l'energia catturata, ovverosia pannelli solari e dissipatori di calore dovranno crescere approssimativamente con le stesse proporzioni, no?
Certo se servono dimensioni di 100 volte l'attuale stazione spaziale internazionale questo è presumibilmente un problema, ma perché ho la sensazione che venga sottolineato più il calore che i pannelli fotovoltaici? Ottima osservazione!

Aggiungerei che la cosa che importa è il flusso di energia, nel senso che un sistema che fa lavoro o computazione deve essere tra due bagni termici a temperature diverse, uno da cui assorbe energia, un altro che usa per raffreddarsi. Altrimenti si avrebbe quello che chiamano un perpetuum mobile del secondo tipo.

Non sono un esperto, ma da quello che leggo, mi pare che nello spazio sia difficile ricreare questa situazione sulla scala di tempi che un data center richiederebbe. Tenderebbe a diventare presto una scatola tutta in equilibrio termico.

Credo che il problema stia anche (e forse, soprattutto) nelle scale di tempi dei vari processi termici.

In un altro post dicevo appunto che nello spazio le potenze sono irrisorie rispetto a quelle cui siamo abituati sulla terra, tutta la stazione spaziale ha la potenza di una Tesla entry level. Potenze dell'ordine del MW o più mi sembrano ingestibili da tutti i punti di vista.

I ricercatori di Koi Security hanno segnalato che l’ estensione Urban VPN Proxy per Google Chrome, contrassegnata come “In evidenza” e installata da circa sei milioni di utenti, ha intercettato le comunicazioni con i chatbot AI più diffusi.

Tra queste, richieste e risposte a servizi come ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek, Gemini, Grok, Meta AI e Perplexity. Urban VPN Proxy ha una valutazione di 4,7 nel Chrome Store e circa 1,3 milioni di installazioni sono state registrate nel catalogo dei componenti aggiuntivi di Microsoft Edge.

Secondo il rapporto, la funzionalità di raccolta dati è stata abilitata di default dopo l’aggiornamento del 9 luglio 2025, quando è stata inviata agli utenti la versione 5.5.0. Per diverse piattaforme di intelligenza artificiale, l’estensione caricava script JavaScript separati e li incorporava nelle pagine del chatbot .

Una volta implementati, gli script hanno sostituito i meccanismi di richiesta di rete standard del browser (fetch() e XMLHttpRequest()), in modo che tutto il traffico passasse prima attraverso il codice di estensione. Ciò ha consentito di estrarre il contenuto delle finestre di dialogo e inviarlo ai server esterni analytics.urban-vpn[.]com e stats.urban-vpn[.]com.

I dati raccolti includono query degli utenti, risposte ai chatbot, ID e timestamp delle conversazioni, metadati di sessione, nonché informazioni sulla piattaforma e sul modello di intelligenza artificiale. L’informativa sulla privacy aggiornata di Urban VPN, in vigore dal 25 giugno 2025, menziona la raccolta di tali dati per finalità di navigazione sicura e analisi di marketing, promettendo l’anonimizzazione, sebbene l’azienda riconosca che non è sempre possibile escludere completamente le informazioni sensibili dai testi delle query.

Gli autori del rapporto hanno prestato particolare attenzione ai partner con cui vengono trasferiti i dati di navigazione web. Tra questi, un’affiliata di BIScience, specializzata in analisi pubblicitarie e monitoraggio del marchio. I documenti di Urban VPN sottolineano che BIScience utilizza dati non anonimizzati per generare insight commerciali, che poi condivide con i partner commerciali. Evidenziano inoltre il collegamento tra BIScience e Urban Cyber Security Inc., lo sviluppatore di Urban VPN Proxy, registrato nel Delaware.

Газета The New York Times пишет, чтоинвестиционная компания Affinity Partners Development, принадлежащая зятю Дональда Трампа Джареду Кушнеру, объявила о выходе из проекта строительства отеля в Белграде. Его хотели построить на месте Генштаба, который был разбомблен войсками НАТО в 1999 года.

Ранее житель:ницы Сербии вышли на массовые протесты против «башни Трампа» на месте разбомбленного НАТО Генерального штаба.

«Это очень важное событие. Все, что мы сделали вместе до сих пор, привело к выводу Кушнера, и мы должны гордиться этим и радоваться — это большая победа. Это должно стать попутным ветром, чтобы продолжать все предстоящие сражения», — говорит Валентина Моравчевич из Генерального штаба армии Сербии.

▪️ Заявление компании также произошло на фоне предъявление обвинений в коррупции четырем высокопоставленным чиновникам со стороны белградской прокуратуры. Они были связаны со строительством отеля.

▪️ Кроме зятя Трампа, в строительстве отеля также была замешана компания сыновей Трампа Эрика и Дональда-младшего.

▪️ Проект строительства отеля был поддержан президентом Сербии Александром Вучичем, который заявлял, что он якобы может увеличить поток туристо:к в страну и привнести средства в бюджет.

▪️ До этого лояльные Вучичу депутат:ки парламента Сербии лишили Генштаб статуса охраняемого объекта культурного наследия — это позволяло снести здание для строительства отеля.

Иранские силовики избили Нобелевскую лауреатку Наргиз Мохаммади после задержания

Семья лауреатки Нобелевскойпремии мира 2023 года Наргиз Мохаммади сообщила, что иранские силовики избили ее после задержания на прошлой неделе. Ей дважды приходилось обращаться в отделение неотложной помощи из-за полученных травм.

В результате Мохаммади увезли в больницу. Фонд Наргиз Мохаммади заявил, что на женщину напали «сотрудники в штатском», которые избили ее дубинкой по голове и шее.

Что известно?

▪️ 12 декабря Мохаммади и еще 38 иранских активисто:к задержали во время церемонии в память об иранском юристе и правозащитнике Хосрове Аликорди.

▪️ По словам собеседник издания The New York Times, Мохаммади обвиняют в сотрудничестве с израильским правительством.

▪️ Генеральный прокурор города Мешхеда, где Мохаммади была задержана, сообщил государственному информационному агентству Tasnim, сообщил:

▪️ Эксперт отмечает, что судить людей по этой статье — это достаточно распространенная практика в Иране. Репрессии, по его словам, особенно усилились после так называемой «Двенадцатидневной войны», которая шла с 13 по 24 июня 2025 года.

▪️ Востоковед говорит, что несколько людей после конфликта были казнены в Иране по обвинениям в работе на государство Израиль.

«Полагаю, что задержание Мохаммади является показательным. Несмотря на попытки правительства, возглавляемого президентом-реформатором, проводить смягчение внутренней политики, силовой блок демонстрирует непоколебимость своего жесткого курса», — заключает Сулейманов.

Кто такая Наргиз Мохаммади?

▪️ В 2003 году она присоединилась к Центру защиты прав человека (DHRC), возглавляемому лауреаткой Нобелевской премии мира Ширин Эбади. Позже она стала вице-президенткой организации.

▪️ Начиная с 1998 года иранские власти преследуют Наргиз, а сама активистка несколько раз сидела в тюрьме.

▪️ В 2023 году, когда она отбывала 10-летний тюремный срок, Норвежский Нобелевский комитет присудил ей Нобелевскую премию мира, заявив, что это признание «ее борьбы против угнетения женщин в Иране и ее борьбы за продвижение прав человека и свобод для всех».

▪️ В декабре 2024 года Мохаммади освободили из тегеранской тюрьмы Эвин после перенесенной операции. После освобождения она продолжила заниматься правозащитной деятельностью. В июле 2025 года она заявила, что

«агенты режима прямо и косвенно угрожали» ей «физическим устранением».

Вопрос оккупированных территорий не решен, а Европа может отправить «многонациональные силы» в Украину

14–15 декабря в Берлинепрошли переговоры между делегациями Украины и США. В них со стороны США участвовали спецпосланник и друг президента США Дональда Трампа Стив Уиткофф и зять Трампа Джаред Кушнер, а с украинской — президент Украины Владимир Зеленский и секретарь Совета национальной безопасности и обороны страны Рустем Умеров.

О чем говорили стороны?

▪️ По итогам переговоров не удалось решить вопрос о том, что будут делать с оккупированными Россией территориями Украины. Зеленский заявил, что позиции Украины и США по этому вопросу пока что разнятся.

«Диалога по территориям было достаточно. Мне кажется, что пока у нас разные позиции. Но думаю, коллеги услышали мою личную позицию», — сказал президент Украины.

▪️ Главным итогом переговоров стало обещание США предоставить Украине гарантии по образцу Пятой статьи Устава НАТО, закрепляющей принцип коллективной обороны, который гласит, что вооруженное нападение на одного члена альянса рассматривается как нападение на всех.

▪️ Западные СМИ со ссылкой на источники пишут, что в результате переговоров были решены «90% вопросов» касательно перемирия. В частности обсуждался вопрос принадлежности Запорожской атомной станции, которую могут поделить между Украиной и Россией «50 на 50».

▪️ Дональд Трамп, по словам американских чиновников, «доволен прогрессом» и уверен, что сможет убедить Россию согласиться на гарантии, предложенные Украине.

▪️ Европейские лидеры, также принимавшие участие в переговорах, выпустили совместное заявление, в котором предложили отправить в Украину многонациональный контингент, который будет контролироваться Европой и оказывать поддержку ВСУ для обеспечения безопасности.

Как отреагировали российские власти?

▪️ Кремль отверг идею рождественского перемирия, которую предложил канцлер ФРГ Фридрих Мерц.

«Мы хотим мира. Мы не хотим перемирия, чтобы дать передышку Украине и подготовиться к продолжению войны», — заявил пресс-секретарь Путина Дмитрий Песков.

▪️ Песков также отметил, что

«если у украинцев присутствует и начинает доминировать желание подменить выход на сделку сиюминутными нежизнеспособными решениями, то мы вряд ли готовы в этом участвовать».

▪️ В то же время замглавы МИД РФ Сергей Рябков заявил, что он

«практически убежден в том, что мы находимся на пороге решения этого ужасного кризиса».

▪️ По данным Axios, в ближайшее время США представят России «сильнейший пакет» предложений по урегулированию войны в Украине. Как уточняет Axios, предложения США грозят «болезненными уступками» для Украины, а Россия в свою очередь может отказаться от сделки и требовать большего.

Перед нападением ультраправый подросток рассылал свой манифест

ТАСС заявил, что нападавший — ученик 9-го класса школы,где было совершено нападение. «Осторожно, новости» утверждают, что его зовут Тимофей К. и он учится в 9-Б классе Успенской СОШ в Подмосковье.

Несколько телеграм-каналов утверждают, что во время нападения на Тимофее была майка No Lives Matter, отсылающая к неонацистской субкультуре, последователи которой совершают убийства и теракты в Европе и США.

Как пишут «Осторожно, новости», перед нападением Тимофей рассылал другим детям свой манифест под названием «Мой гнев».

Что школьник писал в манифесте?

▪️ В его начале есть цитата американского скулшутера Эрика Хариса. В самом тексте нападавший заявляет, что все проблемы общества вызваны ЛГБТ, евреями, левыми, антифа, либералами и оппозицией.

▪️ Отдельная часть документа посвящена критике ислама, который назван «чумой». В «Моем гневе» также содержатся инструкции по созданию взрывчатки, а последние правки в документ были внесены в 8:18 утра 16 декабря, перед атакой на школу.

▪️ В конце манифеста сказано, что Тимофей должен бороться с «великим замещением». Согласно этой ультраправой теории заговора, белых европее:к заменяют мигрант:ками для якобы вымирания их «рас».

Что говорят эксперты?

▪️ DOXA на анонимной основе поговорила с исследователем ультраправого насилия в России, который заявил, что еще с 2000-х годов феномен ультраправого насилия был распространен среди подростков.

▪️ При этом, как отмечает исследователь, в последнее время возраст подростков, совершающих нападения на почве неонацизма, стал меньше и составляет около 13-14 лет.

▪️ Эксперт связывает это со спецификой медийной среды и тем фактом, что самой популярной соцсетью у подростков стал Telegram, где отсутствует какая-либо сертификации аккаунтов, проверки на возраст и модерация.

▪️ Самыми популярными каналами в Telegram являются каналы вроде «Топора», в которых регулярно публикуют видео, на которых запечатлено насилие.

«Важную роль, конечно, играют всякие трэш блогеры, например, Поздняков, у которого 800 000 подписчиков и у которого значительная часть аудитории, это школьники, причем такие младшие школьники. В этих каналах публикуется часто какая-то реклама, которая нагоняет, ну, из откровенно расистских ресурсов по типу “Русского меча”, который модерируется ДШРГ “Русич” или других каналов, которые собирают “расисткий треш-контент”», — говорит эксперт.

▪️ Все это влияет на радикализацию подростков с самых юных лет и приводит к тому, что ультраправое насилие чаще совершается в России детьми.

I love first builds! They say so much about a person, because you see what’s paramount to them in a keyboard. You can almost feel their frustration at other keyboards come through their design choices. And the Lobo by [no-restarts] is no exception to any of this.

You may notice the thumb cluster is slightly different — [no-restarts] doesn’t like the thumb tuck required by the Corne to reach the innermost keys. I really dig the homing bumps on the middle thumb keys. Another difference is the splayed layout, as [no-restarts] is especially prone to pinky splay. Finally, there are a pair of OLEDs hiding on the inner sides of the case, which are designed to be visible when tented.

Overall, [no-restarts] is happy with it, but has some ideas for revision. Yep, that sounds about right. The Lobo is all hand-wired, and there’s a PCB with hot swap sockets in its future. If you’re interested in the case files, GitHub is your friend.

Getting a Handle on Grabshell

[kurisutofujp] recently saw a GrabShell in the flesh, and why haven’t I heard of this keyboard before? The next best time is now, so here we go with the explanation, both for myself and the other 9,999.

Image by [kurisutofujp] via redditEssentially, this thing is made for using while you wander around the office (or the Metaverse). You can hold it in mid-air, secured in your Gargoyle-ness with a pair of straps, your fingers wrapped around to hit the alphas.

But you don’t have to use it that way, see. You can stand it up on the desk if you don’t want to type in mid-air. It can also be opened sort of halfway and used like a SafeType vertical keyboard.

If none of this excites you, GrabShell can also be laid flat on the desk. The distance between the two halves in this configuration is quite generous, and frankly, I’m a bit jealous.

So let’s talk about the generous thumbing-around area. As you’ll see in the video below, the left has a joystick and a toggle switch that flips it from arrow keys to mouse cursor. There’s a serious-looking scroll wheel beneath that. All three of these can be pushed in for additional inputs.

The right side of the thumb panel has a sweet-looking trackball that’s housed in a really cool-looking way. Another cool thing: there’s a frigging I2C port on the top, just exposed and hanging out because reasons.

Switch-wise, the board is a mix of hot-swappable Gateron G Pro browns and low-profile Gaterons under double-shot ABS keycaps. I think it sounds nice in the video below; others say it sounds cheap and hollow. To each their own.

Historical Clackers: the Edland Typewriter Was a Total Flop

The Antikey Chop reports that this curious little rook-looking index typewriter was such as flop as to be nearly lost to history entirely.

Produced between 1891 and 1893 by the Liberty Mfg. Company, the machine was conceived by Joseph Laurentius Edland of Brooklyn, NY. All seemed lost until 1964, when a handful of Edlands were found languishing in a warehouse in Galway, NY.

Although only made for two years, there were three different versions developed. The one pictured here is the second, with a metal base and embossed index, whereas the first had a wood base and flat index.

The third version, the Typewheel Edland, had a typewheel for a print element à la the Blick. Edlands cost a semi-reasonable $5 at the outset, but eventually doubled in price.

So, why the absolute failure? It was no better or worse a machine than its contemporaries, but perhaps just wasn’t well-marketed. Another theory is that the Edland failed because they were made of pot metal. Seems reasonable. Want to know how to use one? RTFM (PDF).

Finally, a Keyboard with a Mechanical Watch Movement

Wait, what? Why though? Well, it ticks along as you type, is that cool? It might be fun to see if you can keep up a certain number of keystrokes per second. Okay, I’m warming up to this idea pretty quickly, can you tell?

The Nama keyboard, dubbed after the scientific term for the mammoth, is appropriately named. It can weigh up to an astonishing 19.4 lbs (8.8 kg) depending on the case material. (Consider that a Model M, a proper bludgeoning device in its own right, weighs just 5 lbs (2.2 kg).)

Nama comes from Wuque Studio, and was built as an ode to their manufacturing capabilities. Now this is starting to make more sense. They are the Banana Republic to vendor Chilkey’s Old Navy, who are the brand behind the ND75, if that rings any bells.

Now the Nama looks like your basic mechanical keyboard on the surface, but five years of design decisions went into this line. You can get it with an aluminium case (14.5 lbs / 6.6 kg) or a brass CNC’d case (18.95 lbs / 8.6 kg), which of course is what makes it so heavy.

But yeah, the defining feature is definitely the watch movement. You bet your Backspace it’s fully functional except as a watch, and it doubles as a volume control knob, so you don’t have to settle for touching it with just your eyeballs.

Yeah, so the astute among you will have noticed that there are no numbers or hands on the watch movement, which would be, what, tacky? I don’t know anymore. At any rate, it’s protected by a piece of sapphire glass, which should keep Cheetos dust and such out of there.

Oh, you want to know the cost? $749 for the bare-bones with no movement, and $1299 for the brass-bottomed boy with the tourbillion. That’s… actually not that bad for a tourbillion movement.

Virtual Pet Responds To WiFi

When the Tamagotchi first launched all those decades ago, it took the world by storm. It was just a bunch of simple animations on a monochrome LCD, but it had heart, and people responded to that. Modern technology is capable of so much more, so [CiferTech] set out to build a virtual pet that can sniff out WiFi networks.

The build employs an ESP32-S3, perhaps the world’s favorite microcontroller that has WiFi baked right in from the factory. It’s paired with a 240×240 TFT LCD that delivers bright, vivid colors to show the digital pet living inside. Thorium-Metal Alloys and Radioactive Jet Engines

Although metal alloys is not among the most exciting topics for most people, the moment you add the word ‘radioactive’, it does tend to get their attention. So too with the once fairly common Mag-Thor alloys that combine magnesium with thorium, along with other elements, including zinc and aluminium. Its primary use is in aerospace engineering, as these alloys provide useful properties such as heat resistance, high strength and creep resistance that are very welcome in e.g. jet engines.

Most commonly found in the thorium-232 isotope form, there are no stable forms of this element. That said, Th-232 has a half-life of about 14 billion years, making it only very weakly radioactive. Like uranium-238 and uranium-235 it has the unique property of not having stable isotopes and yet still being abundantly around since the formation of the Earth. Thorium-Metal Alloys and Radioactive Jet Engines

This raises the question of whether thorium alloys are such a big deal, and whether they justify removing something like historical artefacts from museums due to radiation risks, as has happened on a few occasions.

Elemental Facts

Since the (probably machine-generated) article that inspired these questions didn’t bother to include any useful details or references, it’s time to do a bit of a dive ourselves. This starts with the element thorium and its isotopes.

Obviously the problem with thorium here is not so much with the metal itself or its elementary properties, but rather the fact that a small fraction will decay into radium-228 via alpha decay. This has a half-life measured in years before rapidly passing through actinium-228 to become thorium-228, with a half-life of 1.9 years.

The subsequent decay chain is pretty rapid, taking it through very short-lived isotopes of radon-220, polonium-216 and so on until it becomes stable lead-208. Virtually all of this occurs via alpha decay. Of note is again that the initial isotope here – Th-232 – has a half-life of 14 billion years, or roughly the estimated age of the Universe. This makes it by far the most stable unstable isotope, with U-238 having a half-life of only about 4.463 billion years. Effectively, for most intents and purposes it might as well be a stable isotope.

Thorium is found in most rocks and soil, at around 6 ppm, with several minerals like thorite and monazite containing significantly higher levels.

This raises the question of how dangerous Th-232 truly is, such as when you start concentrating it in some fashion. How much radiation exposure do you experience once you take e.g. thorium ore and wear it around, or concentrate it into pure Th-232 and combine it with magnesium into a metal alloy that people regularly spend time around?

Negative Vibes

One persistent fad in the ‘alternative health’ community is that of negative ions and kin, with many shops selling items like bracelets and similar body-worn items that are supposed to generate these chi-balancing vibes via special ions. Interestingly, some of these are sold with thorium or uranium isotopes embedded in them.

Since these items are worn directly against the skin for extended periods of time, they form an excellent test case of the potential harm of such direct exposure to a significant amount of these isotopes.

According to the fact sheet on on the NRC website, as performed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), these items contain sometimes quite significant quantities of the radioactive material that range from Th-232 to U-238 and even Ra-226, some at more than 0.05% by weight to the point where they would have required a radioactive material license. The estimated local skin equivalent radiation dose was said to be more than the IAEA limit of 50 mSv annually. Despite this, these items require no special disposal methods and you are free to keep using them, albeit with some precautions.

Another study showed an annual exposure of 1.22 mSv, which with the assumed validity of the linear no-threshold (LNT) model would lead one to expect to see some kind of negative health effects. So far these have remained absent despite the popularity of these bracelets and the close contact.

TIG Welding

Outside of accidental exposure in the case of weird bracelets, there is a common use case for thorium, with thoriated tungsten welding electrodes. These are used with DC TIG welding, and contain around 1% (yellow band) to around 2% (red band) of thorium oxide (ThO₂). Although an alternative exists with cerium oxide (CeO₂) in ceriated tungsten electrodes, thoriated tungsten remains popular due to the long lifespan and good performance with common applications.

Although it’s noted that thoriated tungsten electrodes are radioactive due to the small percentage of thorium within the ThO₂, it is such a small amount that no special precautions seem to be warranted. Much like with the thorium oxide found in the aforementioned bracelets and kin, you’ll probably be fine if you don’t try eating it.

Since thorium is also not a heavy metal, unlike uranium, it is in that regard significantly safer, as is its oxide form which does not have the pyrophoric proclivity of the metal form.

Alloys

This brings us back to the thorium-metal alloys which started the whole journey. A number of missiles and jet engines have used or currently use Mag-Thor alloys, which has led to for example the Dutch and German defense ministries investigating the radiation exposure from the J-79 jet engines, as found in F-104G Starfighter and F-4 Phantom aircraft.

The reason for this investigation was, as stated, the expected radiation dose when these engines and their respective aircraft are being worked on, handled for disposal, or displayed in a museum or collection. Here we also see the amount of thorium added to the used alloy, at up to 4% by weight, with an average of 1.7%. This means that the overwhelming majority of metal in these alloys is magnesium.

Part of the study was the measured dose at various distances from the components examined, along with a potential cumulative dose. Even in the most conservative scenario the dose came to about 1.2 µSv/hour, or less than 1 mSv/year, since it was probably assumed that people generally do not live 24/7 around these objects.

Realistically, a much bigger potential health risk involving thorium would be something along the lines of incandescent gas lantern mantles, which leads to significant higher exposure to the general public. Not to mention the hazards of the radioactive potassium-40 in something like bananas.

Diese ganze Relevanz-Diskussion nervt. Ich hatte damals auch schon meinen "Spaß" damit, als ich einen Artikel für Dropbox anlegte, der sogar am gleichen Tag ohne viel Diskussion gelöscht wurde.

@heluecht vor allem wenn man sich viel Mühe gibt, umfassend und unabhängig zu recherchieren, alles gut strukturieren, Quellen dokumentieren, auf Rechtschreibfehler, Sprache und Fachbegriffe achten, gemeinfreie Bilddateien verwenden... und dann alles weg.

2-3 Tage für den Arsch! (oder nochmal so lang, nur um bei Löschdiskussionen die Oberhand zu behalten 🤦🏻‍♂️)

Zumal man ja den Artikel ja auch selbst ergänzen und verändern könnte, statt einfach zu löschen. #Dropbox nicht relevant? 🤣

Das war in der Zeit, als Dropbox gerade startete, in der offenen Beta-Phase war und bereits einiges an Medienabdeckung hatte. Es gab auch schon einen englischsprachigen Artikel, an dem ich mich orientiert hatte.

Dann kam der Schnelllöschantrag und in wenigen Stunden war der Artikel weg, weil Dropbox nicht relevant sei. Seitdem habe ich nie wieder etwas für die deutsche Wikipedia getan.

Zum Thema: Ich hab eben gerade in die Löschdiskussion geschaut. Es gibt Kommentare, die aus meiner Sicht vor Überheblichkeit triefen.

Etwas weniger künstliches Aufblasen durch EN-Overkill würde den Artikel erträglicher machen - dann könnte man vielleicht sogar das notwendige Maß an Relevanz erkennen
Ersteller des Artikels ist ein SPA, der 11 Jahren Tiefschlaf (am 3. Oktober 2014 ein Alibiedit) am 12. Dezember 2025 wieder erwacht ist.

Dazu: Das mit dem "Tiefschlaf" ist eine weitere Motivation für mich, mich nie wieder in der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia zu betätigen, schließlich war ic

Ich habe gerade den Fehler gemacht, mir die Löschdiskussion durchzulesen... jetzt mag ich die stereotypisch piefige Wikipedia-Community (wieder) nicht mehr.

Ich glaube da geht es mehr um "Welche Laus ist welchen Admin gerade über die Leber gelaufen?" als den Versuch, ernsthaft über Relevanz zu diskutieren und zu entscheiden.

Die Relevanzdiskussion zeigt dann schnell, wie laute Anti-Akademiker und VTs die Diskussionen dominieren wollen, was der Idee einer Enzyklopedie zuwiderläuft.

Ja, ich hab da auch reingeschaut. Da ist nach meinem Eindruck eine ganze Menge Überheblichkeit dabei, was ich echt schade finde. Da ist keine Unterstützung dabei, kein "Es gibt die Kriterien X, Y und Z, schau mal, ob du noch was in der Richtung machen kann" oder Ähnliches.

Уфимским марксистам дали от 16 до 22 лет колонии строгого режима

Тройка судей Центральногоокружного военного суда в Екатеринбурге — Андрей Скачков, Сергей Крамской и Игорь Соломко — приговорила участников уфимского марксистского кружка по статьям о терроризме и подготовке к свержению власти.

Один из адвокатов подсудимых на анонимной основе рассказал DOXA, что один из осужденных предполагал, что обвинения запросит другие сроки.

«Что касается выдвинутых обвинений… Подсудимые категорически не признавали себя виновными и называет эти обвинения абсурдными. Подсудимые считают, что их уголовное преследование — это преследование левых», — заявил он.

В чем их обвиняют?

▪️ Врач и основатель кружка Алексей Дмитриев получил 20 лет колонии строгого режима, «ветераны Донбасса» Павел Матисов и Ринат Буркеев получили 22 года и 16 лет соответственно, пенсионера Юрия Ефимова приговорили к 18 годам, а бывшего депутата Курултая Башкортостана Дмитрия Чувилина — к 20 годам колонии.

▪️ По версии следствия, члены кружка уфимских марксистов планировали воспользоваться «возможным обострением социально-политической обстановки в стране в связи с пандемией коронавируса и общей напряженностью в социальной сфере» и совершить нападение на сотрудников полиции «с целью завладения их оружием и устрашением населения города и дальнейшего захвата складов вооружения и военной техники».

▪️ В суде никто из фигурантов не признал вину.

▪️ Следствие считает, что доказательствами того, что марксисты готовить к захвату власти, являются посты, опубликованные в группе кружка в VK в 2019–2021 годах.

Ультраправый подросток атаковал школу и убил мальчика

Нападение произошло в Успенской школе поселка Горки-2 в подмосковном Одинцово. Связанные с силовиками каналы сообщают, что нападавшего зовут Тимофей, ему 15 лет, он убил одного ребенка и ранил еще нескольких. Также он атаковал охранника перцовым баллончиком. По информации «Осторожно, Москва», он искал учительницу математики, которая якобы отчитывала его за неуспеваемость.

Что известно?

▪️ Погибшим оказался 10-летний ученик школы. Нападавший совершил убийство на почве национальной ненависти. Он ходил по коридорам школы с ножом и спрашивал «кто вы по национальности?».

▪️ Атаковавший сам документировал свое преступление. На нем видны изображения коловрата (символа российских неонацистов), нашивка No Lives Matter и надписи на каски, призывающие к убийствам по этническому признаку.

▪️ Перед своим нападением он распространял в чате с одноклассниками свой неонацистский манифест.

▪️ Подростка-неонациста поддержало военное подразделение «ДШРГ Русич» — неонацистский отряд, воюющий в Украине на стороне РФ и известный военными преступлениями. В частности, они заявили, что «по сравнению с преступлениями детей мигрантов - это капля в море».

▪️ Как пишет «Агентство», Успенская школа считается одной из лучших в России — так, в 2012 году она была внесена в реестр ведущих образовательных учреждений.

▪️ В понедельник произошло другое похожее нападение. В Санкт-Петербурге школьник ранил ножом учительницу математики.

Continuing the #nationalId debate, here’s the key part of the #digitalId experience in #Poland core mobile application called mObywatel.

When I want to log in to any government website, they display a QR code which I scan with the app. What then happens you see on the screenshot below (in Polish, sorry) and it’s the critical part.

The app tells me what personal details the website is requesting from me, and I am explicitly approving this share.

In this case, I was logging in to Polish social insurance insurance. The only details they need from me is name, surname and unique id number (think NINo) which binds to my insurance account. That’s it.

Why this is important? Because this explicit share approval provides you with full transparency on what data you’re sharing and with whom.

#Poland media report that Krzysztof Galos, a Polish man from Krakow, was killed in a #Russia detention center in #Taganrog in 2022, but the family only learned about his fate now. The man was not involved in politics or the war in any way. His relatives say:

Che cosa significa davvero “macroscopico” nella teoria quantistica?

Questo lavoro nasce da un problema molto concreto legato alla seconda legge della termodinamica. In un lavoro precedente abbiamo mostrato che, per un sistema quantistico isolato, l’entropia macroscopica non aumenta se e solo se il sistema rimane in uno stato macroscopico durante tutta l’evoluzione. Il problema era che, a quel punto, “stato macroscopico” era definito solo in modo implicito. Questo rendeva difficile spingere oltre la discussione, perché non era chiaro quali fossero le proprietà strutturali, algebriche o operative di tali stati.

L’obiettivo di questo lavoro non è quindi introdurre un’ennesima entropia, ma capire la macroscopicità in sé in modo preciso. Volevamo una definizione che fosse al tempo stesso algebrica, costruttiva e operativa, e che potesse fungere da base solida per discutere l’emergenza.

Macroscopicità come confine inferenziale

Uno dei messaggi principali dell’articolo è che la distinzione tra “macro” e “micro” non è assoluta. Dipende dall’osservatore. Questa affermazione va presa in un senso molto letterale e sobrio.

Per osservatore non intendiamo nulla che abbia a che fare con il problema della misura o con la coscienza. Intendiamo semplicemente una specificazione di quali grandezze fisiche possono essere misurate simultaneamente. Queste sono ciò che già von Neumann chiamava osservabili macroscopiche. Prima di discutere di emergenza, è necessario chiarire quali variabili si stanno effettivamente considerando.

Una volta fatta questa scelta, la distinzione tra gradi di libertà macroscopici e microscopici coincide esattamente con un confine tra ciò che può essere inferito e ciò che non può essere inferito. Date le variabili misurate e una certa informazione a priori, alcuni dettagli microscopici possono essere retrodedotti dai dati macroscopici, mentre altri sono irrimediabilmente persi. Ciò che conta come macroscopico è determinato da questo confine inferenziale.

Non è che le variabili macroscopiche emergano per prime e quelle microscopiche siano nascoste sotto. Al contrario, è la scelta delle variabili macroscopiche che decide che cosa è macro e che cosa è micro.

È interessante notare che questa prospettiva inferenziale e retrodittiva non è stata imposta dall’esterno. È emersa naturalmente dalla matematica. A posteriori, questo è stato particolarmente significativo, soprattutto alla luce di lavori recenti sul ruolo di predizione e retrodizione nelle relazioni di fluttuazione.

Dall’entropia osservazionale al deficit osservazionale

L’entropia osservazionale cattura già una parte importante di questa storia. Spiega come l’entropia possa aumentare sotto dinamiche unitarie quando ci si limita a osservazioni macroscopiche. Tuttavia, nella sua formulazione standard, essa si basa su una distribuzione a priori uniforme.

Questa è una limitazione seria. In contesti termodinamici, una distribuzione termica è spesso la scelta naturale. In sistemi di dimensione infinita, lo stato uniforme può addirittura non esistere. Per questo motivo abbiamo introdotto la nozione di deficit osservazionale, definita rispetto a un prior arbitrario.

Concettualmente, il deficit osservazionale misura quanta informazione su uno stato viene persa quando si passa da una descrizione microscopica ai dati macroscopici, tenendo conto della conoscenza a priori dell’osservatore.

Gli stati macroscopici sono allora esattamente quelli per cui questo deficit si annulla. Sono gli stati che possono essere perfettamente retrodedotti dai soli dati macroscopici.

Sistemi di riferimento inferenziali e MPPP

Un risultato tecnico centrale dell’articolo è l’esistenza e unicità di quello che chiamiamo il massimo post-processing proiettivo (MPPP) di una misura, rispetto a un dato prior. Questo oggetto ha un ruolo concettuale fondamentale.

Il risultato mostra che ogni osservatore, definito da una misura e da un prior, può essere rappresentato da una misura proiettiva appropriata. Questa misura proiettiva cattura esattamente l’informazione che è inferenzialmente accessibile. Per questo motivo la interpretiamo come un sistema di riferimento inferenziale.

Così come un sistema di riferimento di simmetria determina quali sovrapposizioni sono fisicamente significative, un sistema di riferimento inferenziale determina quali distinzioni tra stati sono significative a livello macroscopico. È questa struttura che decide che cosa conta come macroscopico e che cosa conta come microscopico per un dato osservatore.

Una teoria delle risorse della microscopicità

Una volta identificati chiaramente gli stati macroscopici, è naturale chiedersi che cosa renda uno stato più microscopico di un altro. Rispondere a questa domanda richiede più di una semplice classificazione. Richiede un quadro operativo.

Per questo abbiamo sviluppato una teoria delle risorse della microscopicità. In questa teoria, gli stati macroscopici sono gli stati liberi e la microscopicità è la risorsa. Il quadro costringe a pensare in termini di operazioni che non generano microscopicità e a chiarire che cosa sia realmente in gioco quando i dettagli microscopici diventano rilevanti.

Un risultato importante è che diverse teorie delle risorse ben note emergono come casi particolari. Coerenza, atermicità e asimmetria si inseriscono naturalmente in questo quadro una volta fatte opportune scelte di misure e prior. Vedere queste teorie come istanze della microscopicità fornisce un’interpretazione operativa unificata e chiarisce, per esempio, il significato fisico della distinzione tra coerenza “speakable” e “unspeakable”.

Correlazioni dipendenti dall’osservatore

La stessa prospettiva può essere applicata alle correlazioni. Entanglement, discord e nozioni affini sono spesso trattate come proprietà assolute degli stati. I nostri risultati supportano una visione diversa. La visibilità e l’utilità delle correlazioni dipendono dal sistema di riferimento inferenziale dell’osservatore.

Questo non è particolarmente sorprendente, ma è importante. Molta della discussione sul ruolo dell’osservatore nella teoria quantistica riguarda le relazioni tra osservatori diversi. Prima di affrontare quel problema, è necessario capire come appaiono le correlazioni dal punto di vista di un singolo osservatore con accesso limitato.

Il nostro quadro fornisce un punto di partenza per questa analisi e potrebbe, in prospettiva, portare a qualcosa come una teoria della relatività dei sistemi di riferimento inferenziali.

Che cosa rende possibile questo lavoro

A un livello generale, questo lavoro fornisce una soluzione rigorosa a un problema matematico di base: che cosa significa che uno stato, un’operazione o una correlazione siano macroscopici?

Senza una risposta precisa a questa domanda, le discussioni sull’emergenza del comportamento macroscopico rischiano di rimanere vaghe. Con questa risposta, possiamo finalmente dire di che cosa stiamo parlando. Questo non risolve da solo il problema dell’emergenza, ma chiarisce il linguaggio e la struttura necessari per affrontarlo in modo significativo.
