DIY Polyphonic Synth Sings in 8-Part Harmony

There’s just something about an analog synthesizer. You’d think that for electronic music, digital sampling would have totally taken over by now, but that’s really not true. The world of analog synths is alive and well, and [Polykit] has a new, open-source polyphonic synthesizer to add to the ever-growing chorus of electronic instruments.

The analog part is thanks to the eight identical voice cards that plug into the machine’s mainboard: each one has a voltage controlled oscillator to generate tones, an envelope generator, multiple voltage-controlled amplifiers, and even a pole mixing filter which is also, yes, voltage controlled. Each voice card outputs stereo, and yes, there are controllable mixing circuits for left and right output.

All that voltage control means a lot of lines from digital-to-analog converters (DACs), because while this is an analog synth, it does have a MIDI interface, and that means that a microcontroller needs to be able to speak voltage. In this case, the brains are an ATmega2560. Instead of stacking the board with enough expensive DACs to interpret the MCU’s digital signals, [Polykit] is instead is using some clever tricks to get more work out of the one DAC he has. Some things get tied together on all eight voices, like the envelope parameters; other values are run through a demultiplexer to make the most possible use of the analog lines available. Of course that necessitates some latching circuitry to hold the demuxed values on those lines, but it’s still cheaper than multiple high-quality DACs.

It’s a well-thought out bit of kit, down to the control panel and acrylic case, and the writeup is worth reading to get the full picture. Daniel Szeligowski, head of the Eastern Europe department at PISM, has been mysteriously silent for the last two days, sitting in Kyiv, and has now published his analysis. It is bitter, but worth reading. Everything below is his text; I am not providing a quotation because it would only make it more difficult to read.

A little about the ‘peace plan’ for Ukraine

1. The source of the leak is probably the Russian side. Hence the differences in translation by various Western editorial offices
2. As of today, this is not a plan, but rather a framework document, in fact a memorandum. In many places, it boils down to a declaration of intent and is far from specific agreements. The American side worked on it until the last minute, which is why several versions appeared in the media.
3. One gets the impression that at this stage, the American side is more interested in the process than the result.
4. The question arises as to why such a general, effectively underdeveloped plan was presented to President Zelensky in such a hurry. Probably because of the difficult situation for Ukraine on the front line and the recent corruption scandal in Kyiv, which the US and Russia saw as a ‘window of opportunity’ to put more pressure on Zelensky. And not without reason.
5. Ukraine is indeed in a difficult situation. It faces its most difficult winter since the beginning of the war, further financial assistance from its partners is in question, and without US intelligence support and weapons purchased from the US by Europe, the military situation will deteriorate even further
6. A protracted war is a destructive scenario for Ukraine. Ukraine is bleeding out. The prospect of more years of war is not widely welcomed. Zelensky understands this perfectly well; he does not have as much room for manoeuvre as is often claimed
7. Ukraine’s negotiating position has been very flexible in recent months. Issues that are absolute red lines for Ukraine have been approached in a truly creative manner. There is a willingness to reach a reasonable compromise, but as usual, there is no such willingness on the Russian side
8. At the same time, Ukraine is aware that any compromise would be a compromise in name only, giving it a short respite before the next phase of the war. That is why it is so important to prepare the best possible starting position for the future. Hence the fight for the heavily fortified Donbas and the institutionalisation of support from foreign partners.
9. The scenario of a forced agreement imposed on Ukraine must be realistically considered. For Kyiv, this is currently the baseline scenario (sometimes referred to as a ‘soft surrender’).
10. The best of all the bad possible scenarios at this point is a stalemate, preventing Russia from achieving its strategic goal of incapacitating Ukraine. In this scenario, no agreement is better than a bad agreement that undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty. First, however, Ukraine must get through the coming winter, which will open a ‘window of opportunity’ for it.

Trochę o “planie pokojowym” dla Ukrainy

1. Źródłem przecieku jest prawdopodobnie strona rosyjska. Stąd różnice w tłumaczeniu przez różne zachodnie redakcje
2. Stanem na dziś nie jest to żaden plan, ale raczej dokument ramowy, faktycznie memorandum. W wielu miejscach sprowadza się jedynie do deklaracji intencji i daleki jest od konkretnych uzgodnień. Strona amerykańska pracowała nad nim do ostatniej chwili, dlatego też w mediach pojawiło się kilka wersji
3. Pojawia się wrażenie, że na tym etapie strona amerykańska zainteresowana jest bardziej procesem niż rezultatem
4. Pojawia się pytanie dlaczego tak ogólny, faktycznie niedopracowany plan przedstawiono prezydentowi Zełenskiemu, w pośpiechu? Prawdopodobnie ze względu na trudną dla Ukrainy sytuację na froncie oraz niedawny skandal korupcyjny w Kijowie, które USA i Rosja uznały za “okno możliwości” dla większej presji na Zełenskiego. Zresztą nie bezzasadnie
5. Ukraina jest naprawdę w trudnej sytuacji. Czeka ją najtrudniejsza zima od początku wojny, dalsza pomoc finansowa ze strony partnerów stoi pod znakiem zapytania, a bez wsparcia wywiadowczego USA i kupowanej od nich przez Europę broni sytuacja militarna pogorszy się jeszcze bardziej
6. Przedłużająca się wojna to dla Ukrainy scenariusz destruktywny. Ukraina wykrwawia się. Perspektywa kolejnych lat wojny wcale nie cieszy się powszechną aprobatą. Zełenski to doskonale rozumie, nie ma aż tak dużego pola manewru, jak zwykło się twierdzić
7. Stanowisko negocjacyjne Ukrainy było w ostatnich miesiącach bardzo elastyczne. Do kwestii, które stanowią dla Ukrainy absolutne czerwone linie, podchodzono naprawdę kreatywnie. Jest gotowość do rozsądnego kompromisu, jak zwykle nie ma tej gotowości po stronie rosyjskiej
8. Przy tym Ukraina ma świadomość, że jakikolwiek kompromis byłby kompromisem tylko z nazwy, dającym krótki oddech przed kolejną odsłoną tej wojny. Dlatego tak istotnym zadaniem jest przygotowanie możliwie jak najlepszej pozycji wyjściowej na przyszłość. Stąd walka o mocno ufortyfikowany Donbas, instytucjonalizację wsparcia od partnerów zagranicznych
9. Należy realnie brać pod uwagę scenariusz wymuszonego, narzuconego Ukrainie porozumienia. Dla Kijowa to w tym momencie scenariusz bazowy (określany czasem mianem ‘miękkiej kapitulacji’)
10. Najlepszy w tym momencie ze wszystkich złych możliwych scenariuszy to scenariusz impasu, nie pozwalający Rosji osiągnąć jej strategicznego celu w postaci ubezwłasnowolnienia Ukrainy. Brak porozumienia to w tym scenariuszu opcja lepsza niż złe porozumienie, nadgryzające suwerenność Ukrainy. Najpierw jednak Ukraina musi przejść nadchodząca zimę, wówczas to dla niej otworzy się “okno możliwości”
