How much the recent developments with android are gonna affect the Foss world?
A month ago I just bought a xiaomi tablet for my main work machine. Full android, with no google play / google play services, and it runs f-droid and all the apps fine. Haven't missed any app on the google play store, or that require play services.
If google keeps on alienating people, people will move over to HarmonyOS, or a lot of the larger chinese companies making android devices will maintain their own AOSP fork, and google will be as irrelevant worldwide as apple is.

[Suggestion] Custom filtering of feed by keywords
I'd like to tweak my feed by hiding all posts containing certain key words, e.g. 'democracy, leftists, murder, liberals, fbi, market' etc.
Basic use case: Don't like what you see?
Select keyword -> click RMB -> "Fitler for a week". Now you won't see any posts with this keyword on any Lemmy instance.
Is it possible somehow? Maybe a client with this functionality exists? Does it sound useful to anyone but me?
Yep that's correct. Unfortunately a lot of apps start adding app-specific features (which is fine of course), but then don't make issues upstream about the lemmy back-end supporting it everywhere. Kind of a conflict of interest where devs want you to use their apps with the most killer features, but don't care about the rest of the eco-system or helping other apps at all.
No release date on 1.0 yet. The back-end is 99% ready, but we're rapidly updating [lemmy-ui] to get it ready also. Then jerboa is next, then a longer period of testing and bug-fixing.
Image upload support?
In lemmy you can just copy-paste an image into the markdown-text area. Which is quite useful I think.
Users have a media section in their profile, listing all their media-uploads.
Will Ibis support similar ways in the future? How would you go about implementing that?
Drawbacks:
* image uploads take more storage, cause higher server loads
* image uploads add another burden on moderators

Signal needs a phone number. Why are we dismissing this as privacy versus anonymity when governments are blocking the registration SMS?
I really don’t get why so many people are turning this into a privacy versus anonymity debate when the real problem is censorship.
Yes, Signal needs a phone number to sign up, but replacing that with an email or username doesn’t make it anonymous. The real issue is that governments are blocking the registration SMS, so people can’t even sign up for the app in the first place.
Sure, there are workarounds, but most people aren’t going to jump through all those extra hoops just to use an app. If we want to spread privacy, how do we do that when Signal's phone number requirement is actively working against us?
Instead of arguing over privacy versus anonymity, shouldn’t we focus on making sure everyone can access Signal without issues? What do you think?
SimpleX is promising, but seems very new.
Telegram is better than Signal on many angles, but has other problems.
I don't think there is a perfect app yet. But Signal's aggressive marketing is security-theater, not real security.

Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck during an event at Utah Valley University, according to eyewitness accounts and reports from Deseret News.
A suspect has been apprehended, and a shelter-in-place order was issued for the campus, as confirmed by UVU campus police and a UVU alert sent to students.
Witnesses reported seeing blood after the shooting, and Kirk was rushed to a local hospital.
U.S. Senator Mike Lee stated he is closely monitoring the situation and called for prayers for Kirk and the attendees.

TIL Maegul coined the term 'threadiverse' June 5th 2023
Seeing some push back here on the idea of confusing things with more terms than just "fediverse". I get that. The problem is that that cat is very much out of the bag. Surely, for the vast majority of people that have any awareness of the fediverse, they think it's just Mastodon.Either way, "Mastodon" is a much larger "brand" than "fediverse" or anything else on the fediverse. So trying to get some conceptual branding going makes sense. It make things more clear, as the idea of the fediverse itself is kinda fuzzy and complex and probably best left out at the beginning. It's a little bit like the matrix, you have to see it with your own eyes, IMO.
So, my lame contribution ...
****Threadiverse!**: "Social media, but woven into threads, like Reddit or Forums, not like the chaos of Twitter, but all on the Fediverse so you can find anyone else doing anything else too."

What do you think of imitation and lab-grown meats?
Recently tried an Impossible burger and nuggets and thought that if nobody told me it wasn't meat, I'd have thought the patty was made out of a weird kind of meat, rather than make a connection with the taste and texture of plants. Honestly, I might not complain if that was the only kind of "meat" I could have for the rest of my life.
Well, maybe I'd miss bacon.
I've yet to find the opportunity to try lab-grown meat, but I for sure would like to try it out and don't see much wrong with it as long as it's sustainable, reasonably priced, and doesn't have anything you wouldn't expect in a normal piece of meat.
Also, with imitation and lab-grown options, I'd no longer have to deal with the disgust factor of handling raw meat (esp. the juices) or biting into gristle. I'll happily devour a hot dog, but something about an unexpected bit of cartilage gives me a lingering sense of revulsion.
Completely unnecessary. Vegan chefs are wizards nowadays, and can show you how to make replacements for everything you need.
I make vsteak, and vchicken in large amounts about once per week, and use it in recipes. I can share the recipes I use if you like. I make vbacon about once per month, its a bit more labor intensive, but it tastes great.
Even apart from ethics, its 10x cheaper, and doesn't contain any of the puss, blood, and feces that come in your meats currently.
My spouse and I are foodies and both vegetarian. We've had several chefs put together some absolutely incredible vegan/vegetarian dishes.
One of the chefs told us that being a plant-based chef has recently become much more respected in the culinary world. He thought we were at the start of a plant-based revolution in the culinary world. Younger folks are reducing meat consumption more than any previous generation, and there are beginning to be a lot of dedicated vegetarian/vegan restaurants popping up in most medium to large cities.

Thanks a lot for the audiobooks and feedback! I'll go through at some point and try to add the missing audiobooks, this new edition of my list is still a bit in-flux based on feedback, once it's fully solidified I'll add the audiobooks.
One thing that's a bit of a conundrum, is if I should rip out all of the historical texts from this list and make a second, history-focused list, or if I should unify the lists into a longer, fully comprehensive list without caring too much for length (where I would add, among others, Capital, Anti-Dühring, Losurdo's Class Struggle, Stalin, Western Marxism, Walter Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, etc), or if I should try to strike a balance and find a "jack of all trades" list, which is where this list sits at. I don't think it's too long, but I also don't think it skimps on anything at the moment.
Once I figure that out, I'll see about adding or splitting. Right now it's around 60 hours, and I'd like to either get it down to 50, or give up and make it fully comprehensive or split into theory and history.
Sry for replying like a week late here lol.

It'd probably be better to have a single list, with both theory and history combined, but separate articles/essays from longer works and books. Just use markdown headers to separate.

L'UE vuole leggere i tuoi messaggi privati

• I tuoi dati finiranno in database internazionali
Il problema:

Boyboy have a very good video on Pine Gap where they talk about this exact issue at the start: youtube.com/watch?v=XHMa-Ba-2M…
When Gough said they wouldn't join in the fun overseas wars, the CIA bugged cabinet meetings and did all sorts. After Gough threatened to close Pine Gap, the Australian Governor General at the time (a supposedly entirely ceremonial position) worked for the CIA (which we only now know due to leaked documents). The Governor General just straight up sacked the prime minister despite having a parliament majority. Just that easy.
Even if you don't believe the CIA involvement, at the absolute most innocent this was an incident where a very pro-Western unelected ceremonial guy, with completely private communications with US and UK governments, dismissed a democratically elected prime minister and installed a new one. It was a coup, by definition.

I think it's implied that the predator did kill a lot of them, otherwise they wouldn't have the demon legend.
But predators also have a stricter moral code than humanity's big game / trophy / regular hunters, who mostly kill defenseless creatures. They won't kill anything unarmed, or who can't harm. And in predator 2 they refuse to kill a captured prey (danny glover) that successfully defended himself and killed one of their own, and even give him one of their trophies out of respect.

Final thoughts re: FediCon 2025
As I write this, I'm sitting on an airplane flying over the Canadian prairies on my way home from Vancouver, BC.
What an amazing group of individuals, who took the time out of their extraordinarily busy lives to see, hear, and learn about the fediverse! The connections made and ideas discussed were so important, and you could feel the energy in the air.
You'd think after a solid six hours a day in a lecture hall would be enough, but at every opportunity in between, there were lively discussions about ActivityPub and the fediverse. It turns out when you get all of us in a group together we can talk and continue to talk about the open social web for ages.
I now have a to-do list about a kilometer long, they all need to get done ASAP!
Thank you to reiver@mastodon.social for organizing this conference, all of those who helped out and participated, and all those who attended.
From now on, whenever someone points a camera to me, I'll picture jaz@toot.wales saying "say FEEEEEEDIVERSE".

Voi usate i FLAC?
I due programmi sono:
- Exact Audio Copy (exactaudiocopy.de/)
- foobar2000 (foobar2000.org/)

Yep kinda, the white-washing history myth that most US gradeschoolers get taught is that "george washington had wooden teeth". The reality is that a lot of his teeth were from his slaves.
Margaret Kimberly's - Prejudential goes through every US president individually, and has a good chapter on him.

build or target directories in place. So instead of git checkout && clean_build_dir, and having to wait to recompile, I can just cd to that dir.
You will ask, why is it that 15 years after Liberation, there are still many people who are moderates, and even some who are still rightists? (Audience laughter). It’s because thought work (思想工作) is just this difficult, it needs a period of time, and we can’t force them to wash their brains (不能强迫他们洗脑筋). (Audience laughter). We can only encourage them, we can only persuade them[.] (Mao 1964).

Quali formaggi vegan conoscete? 🧀

Ciao...
Community to ask for community names, like a directory
I'm looking for somewhere where I can ask for a topic and have suggestions and be redirected to a fitting community if one exists
If there's a community for this, can someone share it? Thanks
Btw the topic I'm searching for is wireless (bluetooth) earbuds, thanks!
!buyitforlife@slrpnk.net maybe?
Outside of the community search, there's not a good place to ask about a community other than maybe !asklemmy@lemmy.ml
Devils Panties reposted from comics@lemmy.ml by the repost other communities bot - 07/28/2025
Hey so lemmy.ml folks there is this bot account that copies comics from here to lemmy.world. I initially just blocked the user so that in my feed I could see mine without duplicates but I was looking over what it does and this is an experiment im doing with the title. If it gets copied over as I think it will then I will keep the format.
FOLLOWUP EDIT - So looks like the user had to edit the bot behavior which at least causes them to have to put some individual effort into it so I will keep it up while I look it over.
Dessalines likes this.
There’s nothing stopping you from using a bot for the original post.
The community size is likely more a reflection of the fact that .ml is defederated by many instances and blocked by a large number of users.

Donald Trump is withdrawing the US from UN bodies, tearing up climate change treaties, and attacking multilateral orgs -- just like the presidents before him. Imperialism is bipartisan in Washington.Ben Norton (Geopolitical Economy Report)

Not to detract from the point, but isn't nathan j robinson a weirdo of some kind?
