How much the recent developments with android are gonna affect the Foss world?

So google now requires Id verification for submitting apps to android, what does it mean for Foss apps, for Foss stores like fdroid and for future development?
in reply to dontblink

A month ago I just bought a xiaomi tablet for my main work machine. Full android, with no google play / google play services, and it runs f-droid and all the apps fine. Haven't missed any app on the google play store, or that require play services.

If google keeps on alienating people, people will move over to HarmonyOS, or a lot of the larger chinese companies making android devices will maintain their own AOSP fork, and google will be as irrelevant worldwide as apple is.

Lemmy community feedback: Should we fetch and combine comments from cross-posts on the post screen? · Issue #3415 · LemmyNet/lemmy-ui

And how much space would this take on mobile?

You Need to Be Bored. Here’s Why.

[Suggestion] Custom filtering of feed by keywords

I'd like to tweak my feed by hiding all posts containing certain key words, e.g. 'democracy, leftists, murder, liberals, fbi, market' etc.

Basic use case: Don't like what you see?
Select keyword -> click RMB -> "Fitler for a week". Now you won't see any posts with this keyword on any Lemmy instance.

Is it possible somehow? Maybe a client with this functionality exists? Does it sound useful to anyone but me?

in reply to Dessalines

This is awesome. I believe difference from client-side filtering is that filters will work everywhere you login with your account. Do you happen to know estimated 1.0 release date?
in reply to podbrushkin

Yep that's correct. Unfortunately a lot of apps start adding app-specific features (which is fine of course), but then don't make issues upstream about the lemmy back-end supporting it everywhere. Kind of a conflict of interest where devs want you to use their apps with the most killer features, but don't care about the rest of the eco-system or helping other apps at all.

No release date on 1.0 yet. The back-end is 99% ready, but we're rapidly updating [lemmy-ui] to get it ready also. Then jerboa is next, then a longer period of testing and bug-fixing.

[Suggestion/Question]Add costum sort types to lemmy?

in reply to 🎇sparkles✨

You'll need to have a familiarity with rust and postgres before adding a random sort. If you open up a github issue on this tho, we'd be able help out.

Image upload support?

In lemmy you can just copy-paste an image into the markdown-text area. Which is quite useful I think.

Users have a media section in their profile, listing all their media-uploads.
Will Ibis support similar ways in the future? How would you go about implementing that?

Drawbacks:
* image uploads take more storage, cause higher server loads
* image uploads add another burden on moderators

#ibis
in reply to 🎇sparkles✨

So far this is not possible. What you can do is embed external images with ![](). In the future it would be possible to add the same image upload functionality that Lemmy has. However I dont have much time to work on Ibis, because it has so few users and few donations compared to Lemmy.

Signal needs a phone number. Why are we dismissing this as privacy versus anonymity when governments are blocking the registration SMS?

I really don’t get why so many people are turning this into a privacy versus anonymity debate when the real problem is censorship.

Yes, Signal needs a phone number to sign up, but replacing that with an email or username doesn’t make it anonymous. The real issue is that governments are blocking the registration SMS, so people can’t even sign up for the app in the first place.

Sure, there are workarounds, but most people aren’t going to jump through all those extra hoops just to use an app. If we want to spread privacy, how do we do that when Signal's phone number requirement is actively working against us?

Instead of arguing over privacy versus anonymity, shouldn’t we focus on making sure everyone can access Signal without issues? What do you think?

SimpleX is promising, but seems very new.

Telegram is better than Signal on many angles, but has other problems.

I don't think there is a perfect app yet. But Signal's aggressive marketing is security-theater, not real security.

A suspect has been apprehended, and a shelter-in-place order was issued for the campus, as confirmed by UVU campus police and a UVU alert sent to students.

Witnesses reported seeing blood after the shooting, and Kirk was rushed to a local hospital.

U.S. Senator Mike Lee stated he is closely monitoring the situation and called for prayers for Kirk and the attendees.

TIL Maegul coined the term 'threadiverse' June 5th 2023

Seeing some push back here on the idea of confusing things with more terms than just "fediverse". I get that. The problem is that that cat is very much out of the bag. Surely, for the vast majority of people that have any awareness of the fediverse, they think it's just Mastodon.

Either way, "Mastodon" is a much larger "brand" than "fediverse" or anything else on the fediverse. So trying to get some conceptual branding going makes sense. It make things more clear, as the idea of the fediverse itself is kinda fuzzy and complex and probably best left out at the beginning. It's a little bit like the matrix, you have to see it with your own eyes, IMO.

So, my lame contribution ...
****Threadiverse!**: "Social media, but woven into threads, like Reddit or Forums, not like the chaos of Twitter, but all on the Fediverse so you can find anyone else doing anything else too."

I think there is a fundamental division between services for following people and services for participating in groups.

Does anyone know of a good *time interval* / range library?

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/35949063

In Lemmy, we've removed the TopSixHours / TopXTime in favor of a more fine grained time_range_seconds field. You can see it in action in this PR

The problem is, we need a good UI picker for a time interval: IE things like 5 seconds, 4 days, 7 months, etc.

I've found a million libraries for specific date and time pickers, but not a single one for time intervals.

Does anyone know of any?

Thanks in advance.

in reply to Dessalines

Probably due to it being a rare use-case. Sounds like you need durations, which are usually expressed as the timeframe between two dates. Perhaps the intervalToDuration function of the date-fns lib could help with this though. There's also formatDuration which may be helpful.

That guy seemed a bit deluded, in thinking that his efforts could spark some long-term thinking. I get that he was trying to make a point, and raise alarms about how terrible it is trying to actually get something built in the US, but it took a certain amount of stubbornness to refuse defeat that you'll take it to the point of using high-school kids to assemble everything and not professional manufacturers.

What notifications do you receive?

On your phone in particular. I have all turned off except for signal messages from a few people.

Side question: Have you or anyone you've known "rang the bell" on content on youtube, twitch, etc? For how many channels? What (kind of dystopian nightmare) was that like?

in reply to mystic-macaroni

  • Messages from friends, partner and family.
  • Emails about package arrivals.
  • Servers going down.

Everything else only comes in once per day at a specific time.

in reply to jackeroni

Liberals brains have not undergone any washing whatsoever, so are dirtied with a lifetime of capitalist indoctrination and colonialist/imperialist arrogance.

Is Signal messaging really private?

As Signal get your phone number. Can we considerate this application as private ?
What's your thoughts about it ?
I'm also using SimpleX, ElementX, Threema, but not much people using it...

Cheers

in reply to harfang

Secure and private or anonymous are very different things and nearly impossible to do both at the same time and still make it user friendly. Signal is secure, not fully private or anonymous.
in reply to irotsoma

Signal is secure, not fully private or anonymous.

Why do people think this secure vs private distinction is in any way meaningful. I don't want a US service to have my phone number, or spy on me, and have social network graphs, period.

Why is the US government being able to spy on me considered "secure"?

What do you think of imitation and lab-grown meats?

Recently tried an Impossible burger and nuggets and thought that if nobody told me it wasn't meat, I'd have thought the patty was made out of a weird kind of meat, rather than make a connection with the taste and texture of plants. Honestly, I might not complain if that was the only kind of "meat" I could have for the rest of my life.

Well, maybe I'd miss bacon.

I've yet to find the opportunity to try lab-grown meat, but I for sure would like to try it out and don't see much wrong with it as long as it's sustainable, reasonably priced, and doesn't have anything you wouldn't expect in a normal piece of meat.

Also, with imitation and lab-grown options, I'd no longer have to deal with the disgust factor of handling raw meat (esp. the juices) or biting into gristle. I'll happily devour a hot dog, but something about an unexpected bit of cartilage gives me a lingering sense of revulsion.

in reply to monovergent

Completely unnecessary. Vegan chefs are wizards nowadays, and can show you how to make replacements for everything you need.

I make vsteak, and vchicken in large amounts about once per week, and use it in recipes. I can share the recipes I use if you like. I make vbacon about once per month, its a bit more labor intensive, but it tastes great.

Even apart from ethics, its 10x cheaper, and doesn't contain any of the puss, blood, and feces that come in your meats currently.

in reply to Dessalines

My spouse and I are foodies and both vegetarian. We've had several chefs put together some absolutely incredible vegan/vegetarian dishes.

One of the chefs told us that being a plant-based chef has recently become much more respected in the culinary world. He thought we were at the start of a plant-based revolution in the culinary world. Younger folks are reducing meat consumption more than any previous generation, and there are beginning to be a lot of dedicated vegetarian/vegan restaurants popping up in most medium to large cities.

Against Losurdo

Ross Wolfe tackles Domenico Losurdo's work as "a new school of falsification, all in service of justifying the course history has taken. Everything he wrote had to align with the geopolitical interests of [a] few nominally socialist states [...]"
in reply to henryjwallis

I finally got around to reading this, and there's nothing of substance here. After reading every sentence and paragraph, you realize there's no point being made in any of them, just a lot of references to authors and publishing houses with no real point.

Really vague references to Losurdo being wrong, but never what he's specifically being wrong about.

Thanks a lot for the audiobooks and feedback! I'll go through at some point and try to add the missing audiobooks, this new edition of my list is still a bit in-flux based on feedback, once it's fully solidified I'll add the audiobooks.

One thing that's a bit of a conundrum, is if I should rip out all of the historical texts from this list and make a second, history-focused list, or if I should unify the lists into a longer, fully comprehensive list without caring too much for length (where I would add, among others, Capital, Anti-Dühring, Losurdo's Class Struggle, Stalin, Western Marxism, Walter Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, etc), or if I should try to strike a balance and find a "jack of all trades" list, which is where this list sits at. I don't think it's too long, but I also don't think it skimps on anything at the moment.

Once I figure that out, I'll see about adding or splitting. Right now it's around 60 hours, and I'd like to either get it down to 50, or give up and make it fully comprehensive or split into theory and history.

in reply to Cowbee [he/they]

Sry for replying like a week late here lol.

is if I should rip out all of the historical texts from this list and make a second, history-focused list, or if I should unify the lists into a longer, fully comprehensive list without caring too much for length

It'd probably be better to have a single list, with both theory and history combined, but separate articles/essays from longer works and books. Just use markdown headers to separate.

So you could have something like

Trump's tariffs backfire: India moves closer to China, strengthening BRICS unity

L'UE vuole leggere i tuoi messaggi privati

• I tuoi dati finiranno in database internazionali

Of the largest android sellers, only samsung requires gplay. Xiaomi, vivo, oppo, realme, honor, are all chinese companies that require non-bundled google play for their domestic (and maybe other countries?) releases. Google can't alienate these sellers, and if they did, all of these companies would create their own AOSP fork (or just switch to HarmonyOS)

Boyboy have a very good video on Pine Gap where they talk about this exact issue at the start: youtube.com/watch?v=XHMa-Ba-2M…

When Gough said they wouldn't join in the fun overseas wars, the CIA bugged cabinet meetings and did all sorts. After Gough threatened to close Pine Gap, the Australian Governor General at the time (a supposedly entirely ceremonial position) worked for the CIA (which we only now know due to leaked documents). The Governor General just straight up sacked the prime minister despite having a parliament majority. Just that easy.

Even if you don't believe the CIA involvement, at the absolute most innocent this was an incident where a very pro-Western unelected ceremonial guy, with completely private communications with US and UK governments, dismissed a democratically elected prime minister and installed a new one. It was a coup, by definition.

I think it's implied that the predator did kill a lot of them, otherwise they wouldn't have the demon legend.

But predators also have a stricter moral code than humanity's big game / trophy / regular hunters, who mostly kill defenseless creatures. They won't kill anything unarmed, or who can't harm. And in predator 2 they refuse to kill a captured prey (danny glover) that successfully defended himself and killed one of their own, and even give him one of their trophies out of respect.

Overall tho hunting is an activity mostly done by bored bourgeois parasites... the villian of the short story the most dangerous game is a russian tsarist aristocrat who hunts people for fun.

I don't think anyone thought the USSR did it for no reason. I'm just saying they could've chosen not to make those pacts and that's why dividing Eastern Europe with the Nazis is given as a moral black mark for USSR.

From now on, whenever someone points a camera to me, I'll picture jaz@toot.wales saying "say FEEEEEEDIVERSE".

Voi usate i FLAC?

I due programmi sono:
- Exact Audio Copy (exactaudiocopy.de/)
- foobar2000 (foobar2000.org/)

Wasn't there a myth about how Washington had horse teeth in his mouth? There's a great bit my Geoffrey Asmus on that, how he eventually learns it was slave teeth
in reply to spez

Yep kinda, the white-washing history myth that most US gradeschoolers get taught is that "george washington had wooden teeth". The reality is that a lot of his teeth were from his slaves.

Margaret Kimberly's - Prejudential goes through every US president individually, and has a good chapter on him.

in reply to ugo

Then we have the "it works on my machine" issue. I'm vehemently against symlinks pointing out of the code repository because of that.

in reply to Dessalines

As somebody who rarely has a "pristine" working copy I love worktrees. I usually have a "project-master" worktree that's a pristine checkout of the master branch so I can test builds and things without interference from uncommitted and temporary files.
in reply to atzanteol

Same. The main thing I've been liking about it for the slower compiling languages that I mainly work in (rust, android jetpack compose), is that it leaves the build or target directories in place. So instead of git checkout && clean_build_dir, and having to wait to recompile, I can just cd to that dir.

You will ask, why is it that 15 years after Liberation, there are still many people who are moderates, and even some who are still rightists? (Audience laughter). It’s because thought work (思想工作) is just this difficult, it needs a period of time, and we can’t force them to wash their brains (不能强迫他们洗脑筋). (Audience laughter). We can only encourage them, we can only persuade them[.] (Mao 1964).

antonej bravo!

Ciao...

Community to ask for community names, like a directory

I'm looking for somewhere where I can ask for a topic and have suggestions and be redirected to a fitting community if one exists

If there's a community for this, can someone share it? Thanks

Btw the topic I'm searching for is wireless (bluetooth) earbuds, thanks!

in reply to Electricd

!buyitforlife@slrpnk.net maybe?

Outside of the community search, there's not a good place to ask about a community other than maybe !asklemmy@lemmy.ml

Devils Panties reposted from comics@lemmy.ml by the repost other communities bot - 07/28/2025

Hey so lemmy.ml folks there is this bot account that copies comics from here to lemmy.world. I initially just blocked the user so that in my feed I could see mine without duplicates but I was looking over what it does and this is an experiment im doing with the title. If it gets copied over as I think it will then I will keep the format.

FOLLOWUP EDIT - So looks like the user had to edit the bot behavior which at least causes them to have to put some individual effort into it so I will keep it up while I look it over.

There’s nothing stopping you from using a bot for the original post.

The community size is likely more a reflection of the fact that .ml is defederated by many instances and blocked by a large number of users.

in reply to Cypher

or for that matter the guy doing his post by drawing from devils panties so its not reliant on my posting. Im unusual in that im not here for links and such so much as people relating things they like.

In the struggle against US imperialism, Nicaragua is a model of sovereignty

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

This is a never-ending struggle. Trying to educate people crushed by decades of propaganda, mis-education, and historical ignorance, who get their entire political identity from harry potter and marvel movies, takes near infinite patience.

in reply to davel

Its messed up how in the US, the real economy (IE jobs, goods produced, production facilities, wage rates, costs of food, cost of housing, eviction rates, homelessness numbers), is so completely divorced from the "imaginary economy" of the finance sector and the stock market. The WSJ can choose financial metrics and fabricate almost any story they want to, because "success" is never demonstrated not by domestic production, but adjusting the time-span width of plots of the stock market to show booms, or GDP which incorrectly shows value actually produced by global south workers, or labor rates that don't include those who have dropped out, or who are in the gig economy and without stable employment.

The transition from an industrial economy to one based on finance capital and real estate is pretty much complete. Most countries don't import much from the US, because it produces nothing of value. The only thing I hear all the older boomers in my home town talk about, the only game left in town, is real estate speculation, not actual production.

You know what's the fastest way to make landlords disappear? Ask about some broken shit around the house that they are required by law to fix. Radio silence for months guaranteed. Until the next rent increase of course.

For a lot of them, they don't even care if there's tenant turnover, especially if its a high-demand area. There's no incentive to fix a broken AC; the tenants already signed the year lease. They can get to it next year when its time to clean up the place for the re-listing.
