Final thoughts re: FediCon 2025

As I write this, I'm sitting on an airplane flying over the Canadian prairies on my way home from Vancouver, BC. What an amazing group of individuals, who took the time out of their extraordinarily busy lives to see, hear, and learn about the fediverse!

What an amazing group of individuals, who took the time out of their extraordinarily busy lives to see, hear, and learn about the fediverse! The connections made and ideas discussed were so important, and you could feel the energy in the air.

You'd think after a solid six hours a day in a lecture hall would be enough, but at every opportunity in between, there were lively discussions about ActivityPub and the fediverse. It turns out when you get all of us in a group together we can talk and continue to talk about the open social web for ages.

I now have a to-do list about a kilometer long, they all need to get done ASAP!

Thank you to reiver@mastodon.social for organizing this conference, all of those who helped out and participated, and all those who attended.

From now on, whenever someone points a camera to me, I'll picture jaz@toot.wales saying "say FEEEEEEDIVERSE".

Un mese di sperimentazione con Citiverse.it. Come visualizzare le categorie di Citiverse con il tuo account Feddit? Il riassunto per gli utenti Lemmy

Un mese fa @skariko@feddit.it e io abbiamo ininziato a sperimentare su NodeBB con l'ambizione di creare un'alternativa federata ai gruppi Facebook, soprattutto quelli locali.
Per chi lo visita direttamente dal sito, Citiverse è un Forum; ma per chi lo usa dal Fediverso, Citiverse è un'istanza qualsiasi, con le "categorie" del Forum che diventano "gruppi Activitypub", come le comunità Lemmy.
Per gli utenti Lemmy poi la questione è ancora più facile: le categorie NodeBB sono indistinguibili dalle comunità Lemmy!
Al momento abbiamo creato una settantina di comunità, suddivise per macrocategorie.

File FLAC: li usate? che programma usate per farli?

Discussione "accessoria" al discorso musicale propriamente detto.

Da qualche tempo, più per pacioccare che altro, ho provato un paio di programmi per generare dei FLAC dai miei fidati CD.
Specifico che preferisco sempre e comunque ascoltare i CD quando posso, a casa; in auto ho gli MP3 sul telefono.

Voi usate i FLAC?

I due programmi sono:
- Exact Audio Copy (exactaudiocopy.de/)
- foobar2000 (foobar2000.org/)

(sono su Windows)

Ho provato a fare il FLAC di una medesima traccia CD, ma sono venuti file di dimensioni diverse, dovute ai kbps, nonostante mi sembri di aver dato le stesse impostazioni ad entrambi.
Tra l'altro, se lo usate occhio che la versione attuale di EAC non ha l'ultima versione del codificatore (xiph.org/flac/download.html), ho provato a metterla io manualmente nella cartella e funziona normalmente.

Lemmy Development Update July 2025

Work on the backend changes for 1.0 is mostly finished now. What's missing is optimizing the migrations as they currently take about 9 hours for lemmy.ml. Now we are starting to work on updating lemmy-ui for the API changes and new features.

In the last days we did a big cleanup of the lemmy-ui issue tracker, closing 450 mostly outdated issues. Many of these were over a year old describing problems that have long been fixed. From 570 issues only 120 remain. Most of these are very minor, changing a single UI element here or there. It should be possible to implement 90% of them within a month or two.

Here are some of the major changes made over the past month:

Yep kinda, the white-washing history myth that most US gradeschoolers get taught is that "george washington had wooden teeth". The reality is that a lot of his teeth were from his slaves.

I use submodules for worktrees. You usually just have to run git submodule update --remote within any new worktree dir.

yeah, I think these are the main hurdles for me:

Untracked files are not copied

When you create a new worktree, it is created from whatever is comitted, so gitignored or uncomitted files are not copied.
So if you have .env files, you have to copy them over manually. And for dependencies, like for example node_modules, you would have to run npm install again in the new worktree.

Mainly .env files, as they are handcrafted. And:

Editor / IDE complexity.

A few projects I work on are multi-root (using VS Code terminology) and that's already complex enough. Adding worktree directories means adding a level to that, which I'm not bought in. And I don't want a separate workspace for each branch I work on, that just shifts the complexity from git to the IDE / editor.

So I can’t help with the IDE issue, but my answer to files that need to be available ln every worktree would be symlinks. So your .env in your repo would really be a symlink to the real .env that lives somewhere else in your system. Sure, you need to create a new symlink when creating a new worktree, but otherwise editing the symlinked file updates every worktree.

And of course, for those worktrees that do need their own versions of some files (e.g. maybe you keep an old release branch of the project in a worktree) you’d use a real file and not a symlink

Then we have the "it works on my machine" issue. I'm vehemently against symlinks pointing out of the code repository because of that.

As somebody who rarely has a "pristine" working copy I love worktrees. I usually have a "project-master" worktree that's a pristine checkout of the master branch so I can test builds and things without interference from uncommitted and temporary files.

Same. The main thing I've been liking about it for the slower compiling languages that I mainly work in (rust, android jetpack compose), is that it leaves the build or target directories in place. So instead of git checkout && clean_build_dir, and having to wait to recompile, I can just cd to that dir.

Con l’ultima versione si #Mastodon, su browser, cliccando su un hashtag da browser non si accede più alla pagina dedicata: il sistema ora propone solo un filtro che limita ai post dell’utente che lo ha utilizzato oppure come seconda scelta alla pagina completa con tutti gli interventi del #fediverso.

Perché?

Gli hashtag su Mastodon stanno diventando sempre meno utilizzabili: sono pesantemente monopolizzati da pochi gruppi, soprattutto in lingua inglese, privi di localizzazione. Questo limita fortemente la loro funzionalità in contesti linguistici diversi.
Nelle piccole istanze, le pagine hashtag sono spesso quasi vuote o inesistenti. Questo succede perché tali server non federano su larga scala e hanno poca esposizione: se pochi utenti usano e seguono un tag, non emergono risultati rilevanti. Di conseguenza, molti hashtag finiscono nel vuoto, perdendo ogni utilità.

In sintesi: i tag diventano contenitori vuoti, incapaci di aggregare contenuti coerenti, soprattutto su istanze minori, creando un’esperienza disfunzionale.

📉 Problemi principali identificati

Monopolio dei pochi: pochi server anglofoni saturano gli hashtag, lasciando poco spazio a voci locali o linguisticamente diverse.
Mastodon offre solo una ricerca full-text parziale: i risultati mostrati si limitano alle istanze con la ricerca attivata e solo per gli utenti che hanno attivato l'inclusione nella ricerca che di default è disattivata.
Scarsa federazione: le piccole comunità rimangono isolate e incapaci di far emergere contenuti attraverso hashtag.
Scarsa discoverability: Se gli hashtag diventano inutilizzabili o marginali, il fediverso rimane senza la possibilità di avere temi da seguire.

💡 Analisi dei rischi e conseguenze

Perdita di visibilità tematica
Senza una pagina hashtag funzionante, post interessanti rischiano di rimanere sepolti dal rumore i fondo.
Depotenziamento delle istanze minori
Senza hashtag usabili, le piccole community faticano a costruire audience e rilevanza.
Deriva dell'hashtag individuale
Con il filtro hashtag per utente, ogni post diventa un’occasione per l'autopromozione individuale, e l’hashtag smette di essere un aggregatore utile.

🛠️ Soluzione: gruppi tematici sul fediverso o hashtag d'istanza

Il futuro non sono gli hashtag generici, ma i gruppi tematici e gli hashtag d'istanza:

#Lemmy dimostra che le community organizzate in gruppi (tematici) permettono:
- contenuti pertinenti
- moderazione attiva
- crescita organizzata e senza spam
- ogni post raggiunge davvero chi è interessato
- la moderazione mantiene la qualità alta
- si evita la saturazione e l’enshittification degli hashtag
È inoltre fondamentale promuovere hashtag locali o linguisticamente specifici per rafforzare la coesione interna all’istanza, come suggerisce l’articolo di Chris Messina su Medium. Questo può restituire utilità al hashtag anche in ambienti ristretti.
Su mastodon.uno da anni si usano hashtag personalizzati per istanza, semplicemente aggiungendo una parte del nome dell’istanza all’hashtag.
È così che sono nati tag come #Uno, collegati rispettivamente alle loro community locali.

Grazie a Mastodon, è possibile seguire gli argomenti che ci interessano a livello locale, ad esempio visitando la pagina dell’hashtag #Uno.
In questo modo si possono ricevere solo i messaggi a tema, evitando di essere sommersi da contenuti non rilevanti provenienti da tutto il Fediverso:

Un mese fa @skariko@feddit.it e io abbiamo ininziato a sperimentare su NodeBB con l'ambizione di creare un'alternativa federata ai gruppi Facebook, soprattutto quelli locali.

Per chi lo visita direttamente dal sito, Citiverse è un Forum; ma per chi lo usa dal Fediverso, Citiverse è un'istanza qualsiasi, con le "categorie" del Forum che diventano "gruppi Activitypub", come le comunità Lemmy.

Hey so lemmy.ml folks there is this bot account that copies comics from here to lemmy.world. I initially just blocked the user so that in my feed I could see mine without duplicates but I was looking over what it does and this is an experiment im doing with the title. If it gets copied over as I think it will then I will keep the format.

FOLLOWUP EDIT - So looks like the user had to edit the bot behavior which at least causes them to have to put some individual effort into it so I will keep it up while I look it over.

There’s nothing stopping you from using a bot for the original post.

The community size is likely more a reflection of the fact that .ml is defederated by many instances and blocked by a large number of users.

Its messed up how in the US, the real economy (IE jobs, goods produced, production facilities, wage rates, costs of food, cost of housing, eviction rates, homelessness numbers), is so completely divorced from the "imaginary economy" of the finance sector and the stock market. The WSJ can choose financial metrics and fabricate almost any story they want to, because "success" is never demonstrated not by domestic production, but adjusting the time-span width of plots of the stock market to show booms, or GDP which incorrectly shows value actually produced by global south workers, or labor rates that don't include those who have dropped out, or who are in the gig economy and without stable employment.

The transition from an industrial economy to one based on finance capital and real estate is pretty much complete. Most countries don't import much from the US, because it produces nothing of value. The only thing I hear all the older boomers in my home town talk about, the only game left in town, is real estate speculation, not actual production.

I swear my uncle is a good landlord. Keeps prices low, I swear he doesn't rip off his renters. He would never do that.

Assuming this comment isn't ironic: there is no such thing as a good landlord. Landlords are parasitic middlemen who live by leeching off the value created by workers. They contribute no value whatsoever.

This is admitted even in mainstream economics, its termed rent-seeking.

No ones acquires an entire apartment building in the first place with the purpose of living in it. They do it to become rent-seeking parasites.

Okay, I'll bite. I just bought a 4-bed/3-bath (actually 4 bathrooms, but bathroom math made it "3-bath") because we are a family of four in an expensive tourist spot and wanted a guest bedroom for family and visitors. It just so happened one bed and a 3/4 bathroom is in an attached 1-bedroom apartment with its own kitchen and living room.

So when I retire, and my oldest is out of the house to college, we are thinking we could rent that particular part (at a very reasonable rate to people we know). It is part of the house, so I can't sell it separately. So the choice is be a landlord, or don't offer housing (I suppose I could make it an AirBnB and make even more money, but this area is already fucked for housing for that reason).

So if there is no such thing as a good landlord, what would you recommend in a situation like this? Let someone live there for free? Then they'd be costing me money. Don't rent it out? AirBnB?

If you don't need that space, then you might as well sell it and let another family make use of it instead.

Yours is not a unique situation; a lot of older people downsize when their kids move out, and they have a lot of extra rooms and space they no longer need. Its the right decision anyway, as you're now free to be more mobile, and get rid of all the years of accumulated junk.

And we plan to, when both kids move out. But just one kid, with one five years behind the other? But anyway, isn't moving the guest space to the main house section and renting out the apartment essentially "downsizing" to a three-bedroom anyway? Either way, the house remains a two-unit house. If somebody wants a temporary living situation by themselves or with one partner, what is wrong with them renting an apartment from me?

Look, I get it, the system is set up to screw people over to get big corpos big money. If somebody is living in apartment for a decade, that is a fucked up situation. But where I live there are military single young'uns wanting to get out of barracks for a year or two before their tour is done and they transfer, or regularly traveling nurses or others who come seasonally for work who aren't in a position to buy a house and wouldn't want to.

Not the same at all, as lawyers do work to get paid.

Landlords rent-seek by charging access to important and scarce property that they themselves don't use. They extract value through ownership alone, and add no labor value of their own to the process, that the tenants as owners couldn't do for themselves.

What gives you the right to these people's paychecks? If you're not using it, then sell it, and don't rent-seek.

There is nothing defensible about being a landlord. Its not exactly the same as owning slaves or owning capital, but all three are based on absentee ownership and extracting value from working people.

The tenants can do upkeep themselves, or pay people to do that. Rent-seeking can still exist even if the rent-seekers promise to do maintenance (which in reality they don't have much interest in doing, especially if it doesn't add value to the property). Tenants often have to live for months with broken ACs, appliances, because their landlords have no desire to upkeep temporary items. The yearly lease is signed, and they're getting their money.

What I find interesting in this particular libertarian initiative so far, is that it is addressing an existing systematic issue. Almost all other libertarians I come around seem to be speaking about their and everyone else's morality and righteousness, naively thinking that once we all become moral and righteous, society would become as well.

To be fair, you haven't heard of it because it isn't particularly relevant. Marxism already develops beyond where Georgism stops, so anyone who is disgruntled with capitalism already has a much more influential, developed, and accurate framework to go with.

Exactly. Georgism could be studied as an interesting historical curiosity, but it never took off, and was a historical failure, whereas Marxism especially in the USSR and China abolished land-owning rent-seeking, and the massive economic drain that caused.

I know I'm going to get downvoted for this, but since the USSR was a historical failure and Marxists claim China isn't actually Communist but Capitalist, can't we say the same for Marxism? An interesting historical curiosity, but it was never actually implemented and thus can't be said to have ever taken off.

Both Georgists and Marxists get to complain about how things would be so much better if someone would actually just do it the right way for once. I say this as a left leaning Georgist Libertarian, to my heart in the right place Marxist cousins.

For a lot of them, they don't even care if there's tenant turnover, especially if its a high-demand area. There's no incentive to fix a broken AC; the tenants already signed the year lease. They can get to it next year when its time to clean up the place for the re-listing.

I'm using Android Studio on Windows 11, and trying to debug ThumbKey on an emulated device.

For some reason, the ThumbKey keyboard doesn't appear.

Looking at the logs in Logcat, there is one suspicious line:

WordPress is one of the most widely used platforms for publishing content online. It’s often criticized as an insecure platform, but in reality WordPress itself is secure – it’s the many plugins, unmaintained or poorly developed, that generate significant vulnerabilities.

Many people host WordPress on Linux, often using Docker. While this is a valid approach, there are excellent alternatives – sometimes even better ones – for getting your WordPress site online in a secure, reliable, and updatable manner. The goal is to make the web a safer place and avoid the computing monoculture that increasingly pushes toward uniformity of solutions and setups – an attitude that I believe is harmful even when the solutions are open source.

For this type of setup, therefore, I’ll describe how to accomplish everything using FreeBSD. The jail separation, performance, and ZFS versatility – all reasons that support this choice. This guide will serve as a foundation – everything will work at the end, but it won’t cover all possible combinations or configurations.

We’ll be using BastilleBSD, which supports both ZFS and UFS. While FreeBSD’s base system has everything needed to create and run jails, BastilleBSD is incredibly useful for managing them. Since it’s written in shell script and has no database dependencies, management and backups are straightforward. Furthermore, moving jails becomes extremely simple – either by using the bastille command directly or by copying the files (or datasets, if you’re using ZFS).

BastilleBSD also supports templates, but for this tutorial, we’ll perform the operations manually to understand each step.

First, install Bastille:
pkg install bastille
Next, run the setup process:
bastille setup
Now, bootstrap the desired FreeBSD release:
bastille bootstrap 14.3-RELEASE update
With that, BastilleBSD is ready to go.

Creating the Jails

Now, let’s create the jail that will contain Apache, PHP, and WordPress:
bastille create apache 14.3-RELEASE 10.0.0.254 bastille0
Note: This command will only create and assign an IPv4 loopback address. For IPv6, the simplest solution is to assign an address for the jail directly to the host’s interface. To do this, note an available IPv6 address and assign it to the jail. For example, if the host’s network interface is vtnet0:
bastille edit apache
Add the following lines to the configuration file:
ip6 = new;ip6.addr = "vtnet0|2001:0DB8:1::443/64";
Restart the jail:
bastille restart apache
Next, let’s ensure that connections to the host’s ports 80 and 443 are redirected to the apache jail:
bastille rdr apache tcp 80 80bastille rdr apache tcp 443 443
Now, if using ZFS, let’s create a dedicated dataset for WordPress and mount it in the jail. The reason is simple: decoupling the Apache jail from the WordPress directory will allow for updates, rollbacks, etc. of the Apache jail without touching the WordPress files. I assure you that, in the long run, this approach will save many headaches.
zfs create zroot/wordpressbastille mount apache /zroot/wordpress/ /usr/local/www/wordpress nullfs rw 0 0
Now, let’s create the jail that will contain MariaDB:
bastille create mariadb 14.3-RELEASE 10.0.0.253 bastille0

Configuring the MariaDB Jail

Access the MariaDB jail’s console:
bastille console mariadb
Once inside, install the MariaDB server:
pkg install mariadb118-server
Enable and start the mysql-server service:
service mysql-server enableservice mysql-server start
Now, access the MySQL command line to set up the WordPress database:
mysql
Execute the following SQL commands (you should use more secure user, password, etc.):
CREATE USER wp@10.0.0.254 IDENTIFIED BY 'password';CREATE DATABASE wordpress;GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON wordpress.* TO wp@10.0.0.254;FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
Exit the MariaDB jail console to return to the host.

Configuring the Apache & PHP Jail

Now, let’s configure the apache jail. First, access its console:
bastille console apache
Inside the jail, install PHP and all the necessary extensions. We won’t install WordPress from the FreeBSD package – while it’s updated and maintained, I prefer to manage dependencies manually. It will be easier to manage updates in the long term, such as changing PHP versions, etc. At the time of writing this article, for example, the WordPress package depends on PHP 8.3 while I prefer to use 8.4.
pkg install php84 php84-bcmath php84-bz2 php84-calendar php84-ctype php84-curl php84-dom php84-exif php84-fileinfo php84-filter php84-ftp php84-gd php84-gettext php84-iconv php84-intl php84-mbstring php84-mysqli php84-opcache php84-pcntl php84-pdo php84-pdo_mysql php84-pecl-imagick php84-phar php84-posix php84-readline php84-session php84-shmop php84-simplexml php84-soap php84-sockets php84-sodium php84-tokenizer php84-xml php84-xmlreader php84-xmlwriter php84-xsl php84-zip php84-zlib
Next, install Apache:
pkg install apache24
Modify /usr/local/etc/apache24/httpd.conf to enable the required modules. Uncomment or add the following lines:

Enable and start the Apache service:
service apache24 enableservice apache24 start
To optimize performance, enable PHP-FPM to listen on a socket. Modify the /usr/local/etc/php-fpm.d/www.conf file.

Comment out this line:
;listen = 127.0.0.1:9000
And add these lines:
listen = /tmp/php-fpm.socklisten.owner = wwwlisten.group = www
Now, we need to configure Apache to use PHP-FPM correctly. Create the file /usr/local/etc/apache24/Includes/php-fpm.conf and add the following:
<FilesMatch \.php$> SetHandler proxy:unix:/tmp/php-fpm.sock</FilesMatch>
Restart Apache for the changes to take effect:
service apache24 graceful
It’s good practice to copy the production PHP template to the final, modifiable php.ini file, which can be customized with the required options and limits:
cp /usr/local/etc/php.ini-production /usr/local/etc/php.ini
Make any desired changes now (or later), then enable and start PHP-FPM:
service php_fpm enableservice php_fpm start

Installing WordPress

Navigate to the web server’s root directory:
cd /usr/local/www
Download and extract the latest version of WordPress:
fetch wordpress.org/latest.zipunzip latest.zip
Set the correct permissions:
chown -R www:www wordpress/
Now, create an Apache virtual host configuration file at /usr/local/etc/apache24/Includes/wordpress.conf – be sure to modify the “example.com” with your own real domain name:

Finally, restart Apache one more time:
service apache24 graceful
The server will now respond on port 80 with the specified hostname, but this is absolutely not optimal or recommended. It’s therefore appropriate to generate a certificate to enable HTTPS.

For a simple solution, I recommend installing certbot with the Apache plugin to manage everything through Apache:
pkg install py311-certbot py311-certbot-apache
In order to automatically renew the certificates, add this line to /etc/periodic.conf:
weekly_certbot_enable="YES"
And, once installed, generate the certificate:
certbot --apache -d example.com -d www.example.com
You can now proceed to connect to the specified URL and begin with the WordPress guided installation, remembering the authentication and database details (the host, in this example, is 10.0.0.253 – not localhost, since we installed it in a dedicated jail).

Congratulations, your site is installed and operational. Ready to receive content for publishing. It’s exposed on IPv4 and IPv6, with HTTPS (and automatic certificate renewal, managed directly by FreeBSD) and separated from the database.

Generally, I prefer to add an additional jail with a reverse proxy. This way it will be possible to install different software in different jails, ensuring that the reverse proxy “routes” requests correctly. I’ll explain this procedure in a future article.

It’s Not WordPress. It’s the Plugins.

One of the reasons I’m always so happy to attend conferences and technical events (the real ones – not the flashy, sponsor-driven ones designed just to sell products or services) is because I get to meet amazing people and always come away having learned something new.
I’ve been using WordPress since 2006 and have been managing hundreds of installations from a sysadmin perspective. Over time, I’ve noticed a clear pattern: most hacks and compromises happen through plugins or outdated installations. And often, these installations (and plugins) become outdated because they’ve been patched together so messily that updating them becomes nearly impossible – especially when the PHP version changes.
In March 2025, I attended a fantastic conference: OSDay 2025. I gave a talk on why I believe it makes perfect sense to consider the BSDs in 2025, but many of the other talks were truly eye-opening.
To mark the launch of the BSD Cafe Journal, I’d like to share the link to a particularly interesting talk by Maciek Palmowski: “How we closed almost 1k plugins in a month — the biggest WordPress bug bounty hunt.”
What struck me right away was how much his analysis of WordPress security aligned with what I’ve seen over the years: WordPress, out of the box, is reasonably secure. It’s the plugins – often old, unmaintained, or poorly written – that make it vulnerable.
I highly recommend watching his talk. It’s definitely worth your time.

I imagine its mainly a matter of 1) expertise, and 2) priorities.

The detectives who are actually good at solving crimes get burdened with hundreds of cases, then suffer from burnout and retire early like a lot of professions nowadays. Then the people who come to replace them have no experience, have to learn from scratch, and the cycle repeats.
Solving murders (especially when it involves poor people getting murdered) isn't profitable, and isn't prioritized as much as revenue-generating activities like drug busts, traffic ticketing, and getting poor and homeless people into the court and prison system. The reason is very simple: his videos are fantastic. He records himself and comments while doing things, and in many situations, it feels like I’m watching myself. I tackle something new, and it doesn’t work, or I realize I’ve made a mistake and start reprimanding myself. Gary does all this on camera. Sometimes he succeeds, sometimes he doesn’t, but that’s not what matters… what really matters is the process and how he approaches it.

The latest video, published yesterday, is “FreeBSD User tries NetBSD! Is it much Different?”. And, in my opinion, it’s worth watching just for the title alone.

I'm given to the idea that MKUltra never ended, just switched format/medium from drugs to tech. The money and resources being poured onto AI, the uniform adoption and enforcement of it in social media, education, and work, the same way that it prays on the psychologically vulnerable - idk, yeah there's the suppression of wages for skilled work that's going on, but just as well, they've found their "ethical" way to throw LSD in the public water supply and see what happens.

Same... although I did graduate with a lot of debt that forced me into jobs I hated for many years.

Not just private banks, but the US government realized they could make a ton of profit by charging interest on loans rather than enforcing tuition caps or reigning in university bureacracy and loan companies, and all the middlemen who profit at the expense of teachers and students. The whole experience left me disillusioned with the US education system, and I saw it as more of a business or a racket than actually about educating people into professions that ensure their future financial security.

We really should settle on a smartwatch charging standard like we did with phones. (also force easily replaceable batteries in both, so that they don't become landwaste in 5 years time).

Ohh, also, I remember that some manufacturers support "reverse" (outbound) Qi charging from their phones. If you have such a phone and your watch supports Qi charging, you could just plug your phone in to charge, put your watch on the phone, and it will charge both simultaneously - no weird cables needed. That seems much neater.

Most of europe traded with nazi germany until the war broke out, but the US trade with nazi germany was especially egregious, as some US companies continued business and making profits during the war. Ford, GE, IBM, and Dow chemical are really bad cases. Coke even re-branded its operations in nazi germany as "fanta", to be able to continue making a profit during the war.

I'm honestly looking for any reasonable excuse I can to donate. I had a conversation with the devs back when they were begging across Lemmy a few months ago, and I told them that even if they just committed to stop moderating on .ml (while still running it as admins as their test instance), I'd set up a recurring donation.

But as we can clearly see from their ridiculous behavior recently as recorded on the various tankiejerk communities, they have not done so, and so I am not morally comfortable with sending them any money.

Sorry I talked with many dozens of people about this topic and dont remember what you specifically said. In my head it all got mixed together into a single conversation.

The way I see it, funding for Lemmy development is an entirely separate issue from the moderation of lemmy.ml. The moderation for an instance should only be decided by its local admins and users. Imagine lemmy.ml users going around and saying that lemmy.zip must change this or that thing. You would tell them to mind their own business, and with good reason.

I found your reply now, here it is. You were asking for lemmy.ml donations to be separate from other donations. This was already addressed long ago, see here.

Of the two us us Dessalines is the one who needs funding the least, he was fine with the previous donation amount of 1000 Euros per dev. One of the reasons I’m always so happy to attend conferences and technical events (the real ones – not the flashy, sponsor-driven ones designed just to sell products or services) is because I get to meet amazing people and always come away having learned something new.

I’ve been using WordPress since 2006 and have been managing hundreds of installations from a sysadmin perspective. Over time, I’ve noticed a clear pattern: most hacks and compromises happen through plugins or outdated installations. And often, these installations (and plugins) become outdated because they’ve been patched together so messily that updating them becomes nearly impossible – especially when the PHP version changes.

While I do maintain Linux servers at work, I don’t maintain their Wordpress instance. I am however *using* it: I am part of a team which sometimes posts internal messages to a corporate-internal Wordpress blog which employees rely on to keep track of certain important events.

I totally agree about the plugins. In fact, we installed a plugin which itself is a plugin maintenance tool, a way to notify ourselves whether plugin X or Y have vulnerabilities, basically.

I remember reading the selfish gene maybe a decade ago... iirc a meme is really just any idea, that like a gene, can replicate and spread, and has a "fitness" to its environment that means it either spreads easier, or dies out. This would mean that like 99.9% of Earth's population has to move somewhere. Almost all land was fought over endlessly and changed metaphorical hands multiple times over. What we call "indigenous people" in a territory is usually just whoever was winning those wars before written history began.

What "landback" actually means is recognizing the systemic racism that was and still is perpetuated against the indigenous people by means of taking away their ancestral lands, slaughtering and enslaving their ancestors, and destroying their way of life; and addressing that racism by giving jurisdiction and sovereignty over their lands back to them. It doesn't mean that everyone but the indigenous people have to move out; descendants of colonizers born there are technically natives of that land too. The difference is that they get systemic advantages from their ancestry whereas indigenous people get systemic discrimination. This is the thing that ought

This is an extremely white washed version of land back. Pretty sure land back means full control over what happens on that land, including what kind of people can live on it, something that is currently controlled exclusively by the colonial government.

If they're feeling generous they might give you the option to stay on the condition that you assimilate into their culture.

You know, the thing Europeans forced Indigenous peoples to do. Not saying settlers should be forced through violence to do so, but I think it's more than fair that if you're going to stay, you have to assimilate.

I really didn't think I was being subtle here. Very few countries currently are based on native eviction, where settlers have nearly replaced the indigenous peoples. The US, canada, australia, new zealand, israel are the main ones.

I think it's projecting western colonial guilt to claim that all countries are equally based on indigenous eviction. Even colonial projects like Spain's in South America did not do to their indigenous peoples what the british did to north america.

Il motivo? Su Facebook ci sono tantissime persone! Creare un gruppo Facebook significa avere a disposizione un bacino di milioni di italiani già presenti sulla piattaforma con un unico account.

Questo sta diventando tuttavia uno dei motivi principali per cui milioni di italiani non vogliono abbandonare questa piattaforma extracomunitaria che pure è stata oggetto di critiche tanto gravi quanto puntuali.

Perché citiverse.it?

Abbiamo quindi bisogno di creare un’alternativa ai gruppi Facebook per gli utenti italiani, con particolare attenzione ai gruppi locali di singoli paesi e città. Allo stesso tempo però, pur sapendo di non poter competere con un conglomerato industriale dalle risorse infinite come Meta, dobbiamo fare in modo che gli utenti del forum non siano da soli.

Per fare questo abbiamo quindi interconnesso il nostro spazio, rendendolo “federato” attraverso la nota piattaforma forum NodeBB: l’utente di citiverse.it potrà infatti connettersi con tutte le decine di migliaia di utenti italiani che hanno già deciso di frequentare i social del Fediverso, un sistema composto da centinaia di server social basato su software libero (Mastodon, Friendica, Pixelfed, Pleroma, Misskey), blog (come WordPress o Writefreely), servizi di streaming (come Peertube e Owncast) e podcast (come Castopod e Funkwhale) oltre che di piccoli forum già esistenti e connessi attraverso piattaforme reddit-like come Lemmy, Piefed o Mbin.

Con l’occasione, abbiamo anche deciso di creare uno spazio di riflessione dedicato per gli utenti più attivi del Fediverso e per gli amministratori di istanza, in cui sia possibile confrontarsi in campo neutro.

Differenze tra citiverse.it e feddit.it (e i gruppi di poliverso.org)

Le comunità di Feddit.it e i gruppi di Poliverso.org sono un ambiente focalizzato su discussioni tematiche di carattere generale, mentre citiverse.it è orientato alle comunità reali o virtuali, legate al territorio o a un’attività sociale: luoghi e città, associazioni e comitati, supporto all’emancipazione tecnologica e, naturalmente, un particolare riguardo alle comunità del Fediverso e agli argomenti dedicati alla degooglizzazione.

Come funziona?

Al momento dobbiamo valutare i carichi di lavoro e abbiamo definito più fasi. In ognuna di esse, l’iscrizione e la federazione verranno attivate di volta in volta. Ecco le diverse fasi:

1) Iscrizione al forum aperta solo su invito con gli inviti che possono essere inviati da tutti gli utenti iscritti; accesso come moderatori agli amministratori di istanza italiani che ne facciano richiesta federazione per TUTTI

2) Creazione dei primi moderatori di categoria

Il forum funziona per categorie disposte su più livelli. Le discussioni di ogni categoria saranno pubbliche, ma ogni gruppo che ottenga un buon riscontro di pubblico, potrà dotarsi di un gruppo chiuso gestito dal moderatore del gruppo aperto.

NB: citiverse.it è attivo solo da una settimana! Qualcosa potrebbe non funzionare (per esempio abbiamo avuto alcuni problemi con l’e email di’attivazione degli inviti). Se vuoi fare dei test puoi utilizzare l’apposita categoria "TEST" e se vuoi utilizzarla dal Fediverso, puoi usarla menzionando l’utente (senza spazi) @ test @ citiverse . it

Fino al 31 agosto sarà ancora possibile visitare Human Distance, Tempi di cronaca e Ritratti di giornalisti nel conflitto Israele-Gaza. L’omaggio a Giancarlo Siani rimarrà a Ronchi fino a fine anno

Dopo il successo dell’XI edizione del Festival del Giornalismo di Leali delle Notizie che, dall’10 al 15 giugno, ha richiamato migliaia persone a Ronchi dei Legionari, i riflettori restano ancora accesi sulle mostre. Accanto agli oltre 60 incontri, infatti, nel ricco programma culturale della manifestazione quest’anno ci sono ben quattro esposizioni, tutte ancora visitabili.

Sempre a Ronchi, questa volta nell’Auditorium comunale Casa della cultura, si potrà visitare fino al 31 agosto Ritratti di giornalisti nel conflitto Israele – Gaza di Gianluca Costantini, artista – attivista che, dal 7 ottobre 2023, collaborando attivamente con il Committee to Protect Journalist di New York, ha costruito, giorno per giorno, un memoriale visivo dedicato agli operatori dell’informazione che hanno pagato con la vita il loro impegno per continuare a raccontare quanto sta accadendo nella Striscia di Gaza.

La sede di Leali delle Notizie (in piazzetta Francesco Giuseppe) accoglie, fino al 31 agosto, Human Distance di Paolo Tanze, fotografo amatoriale che ci permetterà di scoprire scorci dell’Europa centro-orientale molto diversi tra loro, ma che vedono come filo conduttore l’inserimento della figura umana nel contesto.

L'iniziativa intende imporre agli editori di lasciare in uno stato funzionale (giocabile) i videogiochi che vendono o concedono in licenza (o le collegate funzionalità e risorse che vendono per i videogiochi che trattano) ai consumatori dell'Unione europea.
Nello specifico, punta a impedire che gli editori possano disattivare da remoto i videogiochi prima che siano forniti mezzi ragionevoli per mantenerli in funzione senza coinvolgere gli stessi editori.
L'iniziativa non intende acquisire la proprietà di tali videogiochi, dei diritti intellettuali associati o dei diritti di monetizzazione, né si aspetta che l'editore fornisca risorse per il suddetto videogioco una volta interrotto, lasciandolo in uno stato ragionevolmente funzionale (giocabile).

Grave vulnerabilità nel plugin Forminator di WordPress: oltre 600.000 siti a rischio

Una grave vulnerabilità sta mettendo in allarme la comunità di WordPress, con oltre 600.000 siti web a rischio a causa di una falla nel plugin Forminator. L’exploit, identificato con il codice CVE-2025-6463, è stato classificato con un indice di gravità di 8.8 su 10 secondo il sistema CVSS, evidenziando il suo elevato grado di pericolosità.

Questa falla sfrutta una combinazione di debolezze nel sistema di validazione dei campi e nella logica di eliminazione dei file. Gli attaccanti possono utilizzarla per forzare l’eliminazione del file wp-config.php, un elemento essenziale per la configurazione di WordPress. Una volta eliminato, il sito viene riportato alla fase di installazione iniziale, consentendo ai malintenzionati di collegarlo a un database sotto il loro controllo e ottenere il pieno accesso al sito.

[Help Design Lemmy] Search Improvements

In a recent discussion it was mentioned that the search function in Lemmy is awkward to use and could be improved. As a result I already made two small changes:
- Change community selector to use !community@example.com format (#3218)
- Search field in community sidebar (#3217)

Are there any other UI or UX changes you can think of to improve searching in Lemmy? Im mainly looking for frontend changes, such as reorganizing the input positions, changing default values etc.

One of my most favourite things was watching the wizards over in r/BotDefense killing shitbots enmass via the open API weddit had until spez got even more greedy.

I know it's not directly tied to what you're asking via the UI, but I am interested in how you could help some of those excellent bot hunters of day gone yonder.

Lemmy has an open API, and instance admins have even more data available by accessing the database directly. One of the lemmy.world admins is also working on a feature for vote analytics, though at Lemmy's current size it seems very low priority.

When you do a search and it returns a mix of communities, posts, comments, users... They all sorta jumble together in weird ways. Maybe the content type of the search should not default to "All" maybe it should default to "Posts" or even just blank (forcing the user to choose).

Also the mixed results all jumble together, communities and users are tiny lines of text compared to posts and comments, maybe they need to have borders or more spacing. And maybe add more info next to communities and users.

Makes sense. My idea is to use a fixed order for the different types of results, eg always put communities first, then users etc. What do you think? For communities it would make sense to display the short description as well, and for users both post and comment count?

Yea I don't think it makes any sense to try to sort these items against each other. Maybe section headers would be nice too, a title for the Communities: section, etc?

I'm not a UI or UX expert, but I wonder if it would make the search page nicer if instead of the search target (form select) would be tabs instead of a dropdown since it is distinct selection from the other filters in the search?

The tabs could make sense, but then they should be between the search bar and results, because each tab has the same buttons. You can make a pull request with what you have so far and then we can discuss it in detail.

I'll hopefully manage to set up lemmy-ui locally at home after work and make that pull request - I edited that in with webdev tools since didn't want to lose that thought before I get home (sorry if this just pollutes the discussion).

No worries. Make sure to follow the documentation on join-lemmy.org for development, and use the release/v0.19 branch for both lemmy and lemmy-ui as the main branch is currently broken due to 1.0 changes.

As far as I remember, the loading indicator disappears when the local search is finished and the search appears to be done, even when the remote search is continuing. This makes finding a new remote community pretty awkward.

Lemmy Development Update June 2025

This was a busy month, with ~80 pull requests merged, as we're trying to get all the breaking changes we can added before the 1.0 release.

The release is still several months away, as even after finishing up the rest of the 1.0 milestone issues, we still have to add this new functionality to Lemmy-UI and Jerboa, and do extensive testing.

Here are some of the major changes made over the past month:

Added multi-communities (One of the most requested features).
Added a new rate limiting library.
Refactored the API structs and library for better usage in Rust projects.
Improved the migration diff checker.
Using an external library for checking invisible characters.
Votes are now removed when banning + removing data.
Added a GDPR style data export.

I’ve been following Dave’s work with WordLand for the past few months, and it’s been really nice and encouraging to see him work on a product that aligns with my values. And now, Dave will get to present his tool and his ideas to others in the WordPress community! He will be talking at WordCamp Canada in October.

It should come as no surprise that someone so involved with some of the key concepts of the Open Web, like RSS, values ideals of openness and giving writers control over their content. WordLand’s approach to « what you see is what you get » is something that aligns so well with WordPress’ own ideals. It clashes with walled gardens like Twitter or Bluesky where you’re limited in length, format, content, and where you ultimately do not own your writing. It’s super motivating and empowering when someone newer to the WordPress ecosystem recognizes those shared values and the power of the platform.

Rediscovering WordPress

In his post, Dave talked about his journey of rediscovering WordPress through a new lens. The WordPress.com REST API, its endpoints and its authentication layer, gave him the tools to build the editor he needed, while still benefiting from everything the WordPress community has created in the past 22 years.

WordPress.com REST API vs. WordPress REST API

On a more technical note, the folks more familiar with WordPress will wonder why WordLand uses the WordPress.com REST API, and not the core WordPress REST API.

Dave chose to use the WordPress.com API for WordLand — and that makes perfect sense for the goals of the project. It provides built-in authentication and opinionated endpoints that would otherwise need to be built on top of the core REST API, and would need to be shipped to every site that wants to use the WordLand editor. That’s simply not what WordLand was designed to do.

Perhaps more importantly, the WordPress.com REST API is just one of the many ways to interact with WordPress. That’s the beauty of WordPress: it’s open and flexible, allowing different tools and solutions to thrive. In this case, it’s nice to see how WordLand, WordPress, and WordPress.com came together to empower writers, each bringing their own strengths to the table. It’s a great example of how open tools and platforms can work hand-in-hand to create something truly special.

It’s always exciting to see new tools emerge from old foundations — and even more so when they help bring us closer to the open web we want to build. Funny enough, the WordPress.com REST API still relies on XML-RPC — a technology built by Dave 27 years ago 🙂

Earlier today, @davew published a blog post titled WordPress and me. He talked about WordLand, his focused and fast editor for writers and bloggers. Through developing the editor, he’s discovered WordPress again.
WordPress as the OS of the open social web

I think WordPress has all that’s needed to be the OS of the open social web. We needed it and it’s always been there, and I saw something that I want to show everyone else, that the web can grow from here, we should build on everything that the WordPress community has created. It’s a lot stronger foundation that the other candidates for the basic needs of the open social web, imho.

I’ve been following Dave’s work with WordLand for the past few months, and it’s been really nice and encouraging to see him work on a product that aligns with my values. And now, Dave will get to present his tool and his ideas to others in the WordPress community! He will be talking at WordCamp Canada in October.
It should come as no surprise that someone so involved with some of the key concepts of the Open Web, like RSS, values ideals of openness and giving writers control over their content. WordLand’s approach to « what you see is what you get » is something that aligns so well with WordPress’ own ideals. It clashes with walled gardens like Twitter or Bluesky where you’re limited in length, format, content, and where you ultimately do not own your writing. It’s super motivating and empowering when someone newer to the WordPress ecosystem recognizes those shared values and the power of the platform.
Rediscovering WordPress

In his post, Dave talked about his journey of rediscovering WordPress through a new lens. The WordPress.com REST API, its endpoints and its authentication layer, gave him the tools to build the editor he needed, while still benefiting from everything the WordPress community has created in the past 22 years.
This is also what we had in mind when Automattic released Calypso 10 years ago:

I have a problem with the fact that you can only use it with either Mullenwegs walled garden itself or with Jetpack where you also need to connect to wordpress.com. So sorry, but IMHO the plugin stands against the idea of an open social web especially considering the recent problems with Mullenweg.
