in reply to Southern Boy

I used to believe that the Cuba embargo is due to Cuban refugee vote in Florida.

But that doesn't make sense anymore given that Florida is no longer a swing state. In fact it never really made sense since the demo that is very pro-embargo has always been solidly Republican and therefore unwinnable.

So what really explains the embargo? Quite frankly I think it's banana republic foreign policy and wealthy people in the US not wanting there to be a successful socialist state. For instance, the recent energy crisis in Cuba is driven by the Biden administration sanctioning oil tankers who visit the island. Why on earth would the supposedly pro-Cuba democrats do that? Who asked them to do that? Who had the clout to make them do that? Some losers in Florida who were going to vote for Trump in a red state anyway?

in reply to anachronist

This is correct, the US takes the threat of a good example very seriously, and has meddled in every single attempt at building any state, not only communist ones, that refuse to be controlled by US capitalists.

O'odham Woman Becomes Hero When Genocide Joe Comes to Town

By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, Oct. 25, 2024

"In the #GilaRiver Indian Community today, Biden claimed to be issuing an apology to #NativeAmerican children who were victims of U.S. #BoardingSchools. His glory campaign was short-lived.

"As Biden spoke, an O'odham woman held up this sign: 'There Are Still Babies in Mass Graves. Your Apology Means Nothing!! #LandBack!'

"'How can you apologize for a #genocide while actively committing a genocide in Palestine! #FreePalestine.'

sending tanks and armored vehicles to Ukraine, or North Korea sending
artillary shells to Russia, is not up to the Linux development

next comment:

Sanctions are imposed by Governments --- for example, the US,
European, Japan, Switzerland, Norway, etc. Not Linux developers, nor
Russian troll farms, nor Russia's useful idiots on the internet. It's
not up to anyone on this mail thread.

in reply to return2ozma

Really the only difference between the two factions of the US one-party state, is that one is honest about their belief that a few capitalists should own the country and everyone else can starve, and the other is better at PR. Both Obama and Biden's cabinet were hand-picked by citibank for example, and both parties staunchly support genocide, even though the democrats occasionally try to pander to the left on it.

Ibis is a federated online encyclopedia similar to Wikipedia. Users can read, create and edit articles seamlessly across instances. It uses the Activitypub protocol to connect users across different websites, similar to Mastodon or Lemmy.

You can browse the flagship instance ibis.wiki, or register an account on open.ibis.wiki to start editing.

Support

Creating a project like this from scratch requires a lot of work. So contributions are more than welcome, in order to add all the necessary features.

github.com/Nutomic/ibis

You can also support the project by donating.

in reply to Nutomic

in reply to MECFS

In case of Lemmy most initial users came from subreddits that were banned, specifically communist ones. But that is unlikely to work for Ibis, as people banned from Wikipedia have many alternatives such as setting up Mediawiki. Other people who joined Lemmy early were excited about the technology, and open source in general (which is why those topics are still so popular). So open source and fediverse enthusiasts are more likely to join.

Besides Ibis is still in a very early stage, so far there are not even any mod tools or account settings. So for the moment its more important to get programmers, designers, testers and other contributors to develop the project. Once some of these major features are implemented, it will make more sense for general users to join. But I dont have a specific plan for growth, hopefully growth will simply happen organically over time like it did with Lemmy.

Syncthing for Android discontinued

in reply to Matt

What a shame, I spent a lot of time working on syncthing-android (probably around four years). But in the end I stopped for the same reason, it's very demotivating to be so reliant on a corporation like Google which is entirely indifferent or even hostile to open source apps. Every year with the new Android version there are new required features or mandatory changes to implement, and if you don't comply they don't allow publishing new app versions. That's not a big deal for commercial apps with fulltime developers, but it's a lot of work for small apps maintained by volunteers. And it's never anything that would benefit syncthing-android or it's users, just busywork that takes away from bug fixes and feature development.

The good thing about open source is that someone else can always pickup and continue the work. Google's shenanigans were what drove me to server administration and backend development, which finally led me to work on Lemmy. The experience with syncthing-android definitely taught me a lot about how to run a popular open source project.

in reply to Nutomic

Did not know you were also heavily involved in another project that I have relied on for many years now. For my part it really serves to show how few people in the open source space can really make an impact on other people's lives. Obligatory thank you for your effort o7. It mattered to me.

ideally you would also check for the presence of a followers collection, but fedi kind of has this bad habit of assuming things

like, going by duck typing, i would say that

- followers means you can Follow it
- likes means you can Like it
- shares means you can Announce it

but we just throw the firehose around and let the recipients sort it out

part of the issue is that activities are both notifications and also actions with side effects

@scott @trwnh I'm not sure I completely follow the specifics of what you're trying to discuss here, but ActivityPub is duck-typed: if it quacks like a duck, it's a duck. If it has the endpoints you need to follow it, you can do so.

  • YouAmp - Alive, jetpack compose + material v3, but very early in development. Barely any features. Probably our best hope for the future of these.
  • Tempo - The best current option, but dead for ~6 months. Has a few bugs, but lots of features. Java, not kotlin, but appears to be material 3.
  • Ultrasonic - Great option, lots of features, but dead for ~a year.
  • Dsub - Dead for 2 years, but revived now with a few bug fixes via this one. Doesn't have much of a future, not being jetpack compose / m3.
  • Subtunes - Dead for 2+ years.

US says B-2 bombers launched ‘precision strikes’ against Houthis in Yemen

The United States military has bombed a series of targets in areas of Yemen controlled by the Iran-aligned Houthi group, the US defence chief has said.

US Air Force B-2 stealth bombers conducted “precision strikes” against five underground weapons storage locations, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said on Wednesday.

The Houthis’ Al Masirah TV satellite news channel reported air strikes around Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, which the group has held since 2014, and around its stronghold of Saada. It provided no immediate information on damage or casualties.

The latest bombing raids come a day after the United Nations special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, warned that the country was at risk of being dragged further into the military escalation in the Middle East.

This is the US starting an undeclared war against Yemen to defend Israel. Even with south africa, the US supported that apartheid state more discretely. What's gonna happen when Israel falls just like SA?

How the Fossil Fuel Industry Convinced Americans to Love Gas Stoves

motherjones.com/environment/20…

Surveys showed that most people had no preference for gas water heaters and furnaces over electric ones. So the gas companies found a different appliance to focus on. For decades, sleek industry campaigns have portrayed gas stoves [...] as a coveted symbol of class and sophistication

[...]

The sales pitches worked. The prevalence of gas stoves in new single-family American homes climbed from less than 30 percent during the 1970s to about 50 percent in 2019.

[...]

Beginning in the 1990s, the industry faced a new challenge: mounting evidence that burning gas indoors can contribute to serious health problems. [...]

Cooking is the No. 1 way you’re polluting your home.

You have more control over temperature on an induction cooktop than you have with a gas cooktop, but there is a learning curve. Samsung induction cooktops show a blue "virtual flame", which can help a new user visualize the amount of heat going to the pan.

Ma qualcunә s'è ricordato di avvisare i media locali?

Ho fatto un giro per vedere dove è stata allestita la mostra e non ho trovato nulla!

Oh I haven't seen that one. The roughly 50/50 split does seem about right to me though because it's what we saw in the past two elections as well. Basically, the the mainstream in the country is split into two camps at this point. Most people either buy into the republican or the democrat narrative. And it's a whole ideology at this point, so people aren't voting on particular issues or promises that parties makes. It's about which vision of US people subscribe to, and that's becoming more polarized over time.

The election coverage this year has been really funny, they push debates like its a netflix show. Gotta pump up the viewership numbers for their favorite sports contest.

Mozilla continua nell'operazione simpatia

As a Transfem, it's because conservatives suck (granted I despise all forms of liberalism).

Also why the hell is liberlism considered "left-wing" its center right at most.

Political education in the US and many of the countries that hold these polls is awful. I'd trust a middle-schooler from Cuba, Vietnam, or China more than an ivy-league-educated polysci graduate when it comes to political awareness.
