I'm actually very sympathetic to this. What the US did, and continues to do, is far worse than what the fascists of the 1920s-40s attempted.

The Nazis and Japanese fascists tried (and failed) to acheive what the US sucessfully did: the colonization and eviction of hundreds of native peoples, and clearing of an entire region for the "master race". All under a far more stable form of government for colonialism : bourgeois democracy.

Lebensraum failed, but manifest destiny succeeded.

Not only that, but committed countless other atrocities, unparalleled in history.

Matrix movie lore opinion question. Did cypher try anything else before betraying the group? Would neo and the others have tried to help him if he asked?

I think if he would’ve been like “I’ve rally changed my mind. I can’t do this.” Neo and Morpheus I feel would’ve tried to help him re-enter the matrix.

The whole thing was about “give them a choice” and I think everyone would have at least understood how he fealt and would’ve tried to get him back into the matrix at his request.

I feel like he didn’t even try talking about it before he went to the agents.

I know it’s meaningless just wondering what other people thought.

Part of the reason is that he didn't just want to live a life of pleasure... he also wanted to revert to a state of blissful ignorance, and not know that the matrix was a fake reality.

That would go against the moral principles of the ship, whose main goal is to enlighten and bring awareness about the matrix. It would be immoral for them to erase his memory even if they could.

Cypher also was extremely selfish, secretly hated the crew, and had no qualms about selling them all out for his own benefit.

Both plato and aristotle, but aristotle thought that any election-based state turned out in practice, to be an oligarchy or aristocracy, not a democracy (which he define as rule by the poor, with random selection by lot).

Scaled sort seems broken for small communities

Whenever I subscribe to a small but very active community, for example lefty_news@ibbit.at, my Scaled sort feed gets flooded almost entirely by posts from that one community. I thought Scaled sort was supposed to highlight outliers across all communities to prevent a single instance from dominating the feed. Is this a bug or just how it's supposed to work?

Could the UI and App devs please make it more clear that URL and image options when making a post are mutually exclusive?

Jerboa's not too bad, as the URL field is the same field the link to your uploaded image ends up overwriting, but I swear I see people making this mistake every fucking day. End up posting just an image when they wanted image + link.

Apologies, as I'm sure there's proper channels for this, and open source projects tend to not have the best UIs. Just shouting into the void.

The best channel is through the issue tracker, for example github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui. In practice Im not sure how the UI could be changed to make this clearer. Do you have an idea, or an example how another website handles this?

Community behaviour around deletion of posts

As a regular contributor to discussion across a wide spectrum of Lemmy (and other fediverse) communities, I've come to see some people who will submit a post, get replies and then delete that post.

While I understand that this is a feature of the platform, in my opinion, it's extremely disrespectful to anyone who took the time to provide a considered, or otherwise, response.

While we're building a global community, is there any appetite to discourage such behaviour, or are we okay with this experience?

One idea might be to update the platform to "zombie" a post when its author deletes it, leaving it exactly where it is, but removing the author.

Anyone?

This will be partially addressed in Lemmy 1.0 by making deleted posts and their comments viewable, but only by direct link (not via post listings).

when i delete a post or comment, it's usually because i realized that i responded to the wrong comment or that i posted in the wrong community; will it still show in such circumstances?

For comments there is no change. For posts, if you delete a post which has no comments it wont be visible to anyone else. If it has comments and you delete the post, then it will only be accessible by direct link but not via post listings on the community page or frontpage.

The change only affects posts which were deleted by the creator and have at least one comment. If the post was removed by a mod or admin the behaviour remains unchanged, and only the creator as well as mods/admins can view it.

I'd love to have a discussion about this. I am a socialist through and through. I believe that the system needs to be dismantled to achieve any meaningful change, and that no progress can realistically be made within the system.

I'd argue that there are 4 actions within the system. Vote red, vote blue, vote third party, and don't vote.
I'd argue that all 4 options will never lead to meaningful change. However, given this, every American who is eligible to vote is forced into playing the game, there is no way to abstain. Even not voting leads to a meaningful outcome within the system, and thus is still playing the game.

If no actions within the system can change things, I pose that the only way to disrupt this system is by dismantling it from the outside via revolution.

This however, cannot be done overnight, even if you are consistently acting on it. These types of things take a general sense of civil unrest to get kicked off. I believe that under capitalism, this unrest is inevitable, and once it hits a tipping point, the revolution will start. In the meantim

First, we should be ushering in the revolution. Organize, make people aware of the alternative, disrupt the system in any means you reasonably can, try to get people to be sympathetic to the cause, etc. Don't slack on your responsibility to prepare and eventually initiate the revolution.

Second, since we have no choice but to play the game we've been dropped in to, you should vote for short term damage mitigation. If you are forced to take an action within the system, I feel people have a moral obligation to try to reduce the harm to others as much as possible. This involves making a vote, since not voting results in almost the same outcome as a vote for the candidate furthest away from the one you considered least harmful.

I have yet to see an argument that shows how not voting is going against or dismantling the system. However, considering so many people believe that not voting is the right choice, I'm really interested in hearing someone explain it to me, as there must be some reasoning behind it that I'm not seeing.

Its refusing to play their rigged game, and spending your energies elsewhere.

Every single positive change from the US came not through voting or participation in the electoral process, but from force or the threat of force from below, usually in the form of mass protests, or enemies of the US empire defeating them militarily.

We always dream, but usually we cant remember the dreams. It helps to keep a dream journal, ie every morning directly after waking up, write down as much as you remember from last nights dreams (or instead talk about it with someone). Over time you will remember more and more details.

We removed many comments, since its a blanket term used to demonize leftists, like "commie", and carry out anti-communist witch-hunts (the instance you're currently on blocks the major leftist lemmy servers, so we're seeing a lot of witch-hunters).

Its kinda similar to going to a non-theist forum, and asking, "hey everyone, what's a heathen?" And a lot of the answers then demonize these supposed "heathens".

Re-Created Lemmy Server, Old Posts, & Federation issues

Hi all,

I've been running my Lemmy server since 2023 with minor issues, however I recently had my server go down for about two weeks due to a drive failure (should have been a RAID array, I know, but when I set this up originally I wasn't sure if it would be a mainstay and then I never revisited my design).

So, this has brought about a couple different problems, first and foremost federation seems completely broken? My proxy configuration and cloudflare stuff has been unchanged, so I don't think that is the issue. However, I'm not receiving new posts, comments, or upvotes (after what gets synced initially).

So I assume that posts are getting pushed across but not actually getting created?

The second question I have, and I fear there may be nothing i can do about this, is since I had to recreate my lemmy db I don't have any of the posts from my users on here anymore. They were all to other servers, so I assume there is some sort of copy out there. Is there a way that I can get them to federate back to my server? Or are they just lost to the ether of posts?

EDIT: The plot thickens...

I connected to the database, and I can see a ton of recent posts/comments/interactions, but those aren't showing up in the frontend? Maybe there is something messed up in my config, but its more or less what was in the docs (only changes were to make it work with my proxy vs the built-in nginx)

These logs are from the api, not from federation. So a client is trying to access posts and comments which dont exist. Is the Lemmy frontpage looking normal? Regarding federation, other instances would have marked your instance as dead by now. This should be reset automatically after a few days, or you can manually trigger it (eg unfollow and refollow remote communities).

How can I view the comments/posts I downvoted?

I just started using the Summit app for a day and realised now I involuntarily downvoted quite a few comments conviced I was upvoting them, fooled by the color of the swipe action (I didn't look at the arrow showing up until now) and wanted to remediate even if it's pretty inconsequential.
Another option if ths one isn't really possible, how to browse my read posts, at least I'd be able to find the discussions I had read through

And Mallory’s newsletter the Internet Exchange just published about why they use Ghost. SWF: For our readers who don’t know Ghost, how would you describe the platform?

JO: Ghost is an independent publishing platform for people who take writing seriously. We’re open source, non-profit, and built to

JO: Ghost is an independent publishing platform for people who take writing seriously. We’re open source, non-profit, and built to give creators complete ownership of their content and their audience. We’ve helped indie publishers generate over $100 million in revenue from sustainable modern media businesses like 404Media, Platformer and Tangle News.

SWF: Tell us about your user community. Can you paint a picture of them with a broad brush? What kind of people choose Ghost?

JO: Ghost attracts people who care about owning their home on the internet, rather than having another profile on a social media platform. Our publishers range from solo journalists and creators, to established news outlets and large businesses. They value independence, and they’re willing to do the work to maintain control of their brand, distribution, data, and relationship with readers.

SWF: What is it like to be a Ghost user in 2025? What kind of problems are your users facing today?

JO: The big challenge today is the same one that’s haunted independent publishers for two decades: discovery. You can own your platform and serve your audience beautifully, but if people can’t find you, none of it matters. Email newsletters have been a solid answer, but they’re still dependent on deliverability and inbox placement. Algorithms on social platforms actively suppress links now, so sharing your work there is like shouting into a hurricane.

SWF: Tell us about your experience with ActivityPub. Why did you decide to add ActivityPub support to your software?

JO: Ghost has had support for delivering content by email newsletters for a number of years, and email has remained an unassailable distribution platform for publishers because it’s an open protocol. No company controls your email list except you, so it’s one of the best investments you can make. ActivityPub is now doing the same thing for social technology. It allows publishers to own and control a distribution channel that allows their work to spread and be discovered by others. For the first time, you can publish independently and grow faster than ever before.

SWF: What stack is Ghost built on? What development tools does your team use?

JO: Ghost is all built in modern JavaScript; mainly Node and React. Our ActivityPub service is built on Fedify, and everything we build is released under an open source MIT license. Our development tools are constantly evolving, and now more quickly than ever before with the advent of AI tools, which seem to change on a near weekly basis.

SWF: What was the development process like?

JO: Challenging, honestly. ActivityPub is beautifully designed but the spec leaves room for interpretation, and when you’re building something new, there’s no roadmap. Building interoperability between other platforms, who’ve all interpreted the spec in their own unique ways, has been a real challenge. The approach we took was to ship early versions as quickly as possible to beta testers so we could learn as we go, using real-world data and issues to guide our process. We’re in a good spot, now, but there’s still a lot to do!

SWF: Ghost produces long-form blog posts, articles and newsletters. How was the experience adapting Ghost articles to the microblogging interfaces of Mastodon and Threads?

JO: In some ways really easy, and in other ways quite tricky. We’re at a pretty early stage for long-form content on ActivityPub, and the majority of other products out there don’t necessarily have interfaces for supporting it yet. The easy part is that we can provide fallbacks, so if you’re scrolling on Mastodon you might see an article title and excerpt, with a link to read the full post – and that works pretty well! The dream, though, is to make it so you can just consume the full article within whatever app you happen to be using, and doing that requires more collaboration between different platforms to agree on how to make that possible.

SWF: You’ve been an active participant in the ActivityPub community since you decided to implement the standard. Why?

JO: ActivityPub is a movement as much as a technology protocol, and behind it is a group of people who all believe in making the web a weird, wonderful open place for collaboration. Getting to know those humans and being a part of that movement has been every bit as important to the success of our work as writing the code that powers our software. We’ve received incredible support from the Mastodon team, AP spec authors, and other platforms who are building ActivityPub support. Without actively participating in the community, I don’t know if we would’ve gotten as far as we have already.

SWF: Ghost has implemented not only a publishing interface, but also a reading experience. Why?

JO: The big difference between ActivityPub and email is that it’s a 2-way protocol. When you send an email newsletter, that’s it. You’re done. But with ActivityPub, it’s possible to achieve what – in the olden days – we fondly referred to as ‘the blogosphere’. People all over the world writing and reading each other’s work. If an email newsletter is like standing on a stage giving a keynote to an audience, participating in a network is more like mingling at the afterparty. You can’t just talk the whole time, you have to listen, too. Being successful within the context of a network has always involved following and engaging with others, as peers, so it felt really important to make sure that we brought that aspect into the product.

SWF: Your reader is, frankly, one of the most interesting UIs for ActivityPub we’ve seen. Tell us about why you put the time and effort into making a beautiful reading experience for Ghost.

JO: We didn’t want to just tick the “ActivityPub support” checkbox – we wanted to create something that actually feels great to use every day. The idea was to bring some of the product ideas over from RSS readers and kindles, where people currently consume long-form content, and use them as the basis for an ActivityPub-native reading experience. We experimented with multiple different approaches to try and create an experience with a mix of familiarity and novelty. People intuitively understand a list of articles and a view for opening and reading them, but then when you start to see inline replies and live notifications happening around those stories – suddenly it feels like something new and different.

SWF: If people want to get a taste of the kind of content Ghost publishers produce, what are some good examples to follow?

JO: Tough question! There are so many out there, and it really depends on what you’re into. The best place to start would be on ghost.org/explore – when you can browse through all sorts of different categories of creators and content, and explore the things that interest you the most.

SWF: If I’m a Fediverse enthusiast, what can I do to help make Ghost 6 a success?

JO: Follow Ghost publishers and engage with their content – likes, replies, reposts all help! Most importantly, help us spread the word about what’s possible when platforms collaborate rather than compete. And if you’re technical, our ActivityPub implementation is entirely open source on GitHub – contributions, bug reports, and feedback make the whole ecosystem stronger.

Is this a bug? "Show Upvote %" Only Shows in Tooltip Instead of Next to Votes and Displays Too Many Decimals

I enabled the “Show Upvote %” option and turned off all the other score-related settings, but now I don’t see anything next to posts where the total score usually appears. Some comments show the percentage, but not in the spot between the vote arrows where the score normally is. I’d expect the upvote percentage to appear for every post and comment in place of the total score, but instead it only shows up as a tooltip when hovering over the arrows. Is this the intended behavior or a bug? Also, is it really necessary to display so many decimal places in the tooltip?

I just tested this, and it's not a bug, except for the decimals (open up an issue on lemmy-ui github about that).

It only shows the upvote percentage when there are downvotes. Otherwise, you can assume it's 100%.

Random Idea: Federated "Discord-Style" Platform With Isolated Instances

I had a random idea I wanted to throw out there and see what people think:

Imagine a federated platform that works kind of like Discord, but in the sense of Lemmy, Pixelfed, Mastodon, etc.—with different instances hosted by different people.

The twist is that none of the instances would be connected to each other.

Each instance would function like a regular Discord server: channels, chats, roles, and all the usual stuff, but the instances themselves wouldn’t federate with each other.

The interesting part is that these instances could still federate with other platforms—like Mastodon, Lemmy, Peertube, Pixelfed, Loops, etc.—just not with each other.

It seems like it could be a way to have smaller, self-contained communities while still integrating with the wider Fediverse in some ways.

My only sticking point is figuring out signup/login mechanics—how would a user navigate multiple isolated instances efficiently without it becoming a nightmare?

It was originally funded by amdocs, a US and Israeli company, but they have their own funding for many years now.

Regardless, considering its entirely open source, buildable from source, self-hostable (and auditable), which is more than you can say for signal, where the back end is centralized, and hosted in a five-eyes country.

Matrix requires no "just trust us" clause unlike signal, because you can run the software yourself, and verify that its not making calls to US or Israeli servers.

Is it possible to get the scaled sort to consider all posts over the last month or other timescales?

When I haven't been online for a while I tend to miss most of the stuff going on in my subscribed communities. If I sort by top of the month it only shows posts from the busiest communities.

Bit concerned about the view votes option now available.

I mod a few communities and I can now see who has upvoted or downvoted any comment or post in the community.

You'd think any mod would like that data being available to find any issue user. But I feel like invasive with this.

I know admins have long been able to see this data.

Also its not like its personally information, just your screen name associated with your own activity, as your posts and comments are. But the passive act of voting is now very public which is a bit icky to me.

How do you all feel about this?

I'm sorry I haven't been super active on Lemmy and missed much of the conversation around this. I'll go find any relevant discussions too.

For larger communities, its a must, since people entities use no-content accounts or bot accounts to mass up or downvote content.

Sorting Communities by Monthly Users for Better Visibility

When exploring communities to post in, using /communities, I believe it would be more effective if they were sorted by active users per month instead of total subscribers. This way, I can choose communities with higher visibility and engagement, leading to better interaction on my posts. Same when choosing the communities I'm posting to in the /create_post page.

c'è una differenza abissale, gli occhiali smart sono un giocattolo, può essere classificato come dispositivo medico alla pari di una qualsiasi montatura.

Admins: Instnace randomly running extremely slowly? Check for this

During some work with Tess, I'd notice that my test instance was running horribly slow. The CPU was spiking, Postgres was not happy and using pretty much all the available compute.

Investigating, I found the culprit to be some crawler or possibly malicious actor sending a massive number of unscoped requests to /api/v3/comment/list. What I mean by "unscoped" is without limiting it to a post ID. I'm not sure if this is a bug in Lemmy or there's a legit use for just fetching only comments outside of a post, but I digress as that's another discussion.

After disallowing unscoped requests to the comment list endpoint (see mitigation further down), no more issue.

The kicker seemed to be that this bot / jackass was searching by "Old" and was requesting thousands of pages deep.

Requests looked like this: GET /api/v3/comment/list?limit=50&sort=Old&page=16413

Since I shutdown Dubvee officially, I'm not keeping logs as long as I used to, but I saw other page numbers in the access log, but they were all above 10,000. From

Note that I log the query string as well as the URI. I've run a custom Nginx setup for so long, I actually don't recall if the query string is logged by default or not. Mitigation:

First, I blocked the IPs making these requests, but they would come back from a different one. Finally, I implemented a more robust solution.

My final mitigation was to simply reject requests to /api/v3/comment/list that did not have a post ID in the query parameters. I did this by creating a dedicated location block in Nginx that is an exact match for /api/v3/comment/list and doing the checks there.

I could probably add another check to see if the page number is beyond a reasonable number, but since I'm not sure what, if any, clients utilize this, I'm content just blocking unscoped comment list requests entirely. If you have more info / better suggestion, leave it in the comments.

🌀 Nel Fediverso (anzi, nel mio caro Mastodon 💜) noto che sì, la gente è un po’ meno… ma l’atmosfera è migliorata di brutto!

Certo, ogni tanto spunta ancora quello che sale sul piedistallo per fare il discorso da oracolo ✨📢, ma in generale il clima è più leggero e piacevole.

Sì, siamo meno, probabilmente ci stiamo creando la nostra piccola bolla… ma sapete una cosa? Io qui sto meglio di prima. E non ho nessuna voglia di fare paragoni con i social commerciali.

Ormai è quasi una grande famiglia 🤗 dove ci si conosce tutti un po’.
La voglia di interagire? Di conoscere persone nuove? Sempre presente!
Ma a un ritmo finalmente… umano. 🚲🌱

snow@lemmy.casasnow.noho.st per quello che mi riguarda posso confermare sia l'impressione sulla diminuzione dei volumi sia quella sul miglioramento dei contenuti e dei toni.
Tuttavia non riesco a essere contento come te, perché la diminuzione dei volumi è un problema abbastanza grave perché rende meno sostenibile il progetto complessivo del Fediverso.
Se ci sono meno utenti, allora ci saranno meno finanziatori potenziali, meno sviluppatori interessati e meno rete.
Per dire, baratterei volentieri il miglioramento dei toni per guadagnare una ventina di ragazzi in più 🤣

Perché se è vero che il progetto di un compilatore può campare appoggiandosi solo al lavoro del o degli sviluppatori che lo sviluppano e se lo usano, per un social network la cosa è molto diversa.

Qui bisogna coprire diversi ruoli.

Servono gli sviluppatori che sviluppano le istanze.

Servono gli amministratori che se le installano e le curano.

Noi possiamo dirlo alle persone che abbiamo intorno ma senza una campagna di informazione resteremo un fenomeno per nerd o coraggiosi sperimentatori.

E badate bene, non serve affatto che le varie istanze si siedano intorno ad un tavolo e si mettano d'accordo sul da farsi.

Anzi!

Nella mia idea c'è un gruppo di esperti (ma adesso che lo scrivo mi sto già domandando "e perché un gruppo solo? Abbiamo forse un gruppo solo di sviluppatori o un gruppo solo di amministratori?") che si occupa di pubblicizzare il Fediverso presso il grande pubblico e che non serve sia collegato alle istanze, anzi meglio sarebbe se fosse completamente indipendente da loro, perché ciò che va promosso è il Fediverso, non Mastodon o Friendica, e nemmeno, peggio ancora, l'istanza Mastodon-Pippo o l'istanza Friendica-Pluto.

Sto mettendo insieme delle idee per un progetto di questo tipo, che coinvolga persone che di informatica non sappiano nulla ma che sappiano organizzare una campagna online, produrre materiale informativo di qualità, raggiungere potenziali utenti del Fediverso.

Se arrivo a qualcosa di presentabile sarete i primi a saperlo 😁

considera che SharePoint è ormai ancora uno standard di fatto della gestione documentale militare nei paesi occidentali. Già ha ricevuto una sberla improvvisa con la falla emersa di recente, ma soprattutto sta vivendo un periodo di crisi reputazionale con l'attuale andazzo statunitense. La sostituzione di SharePoint con Alfresco o Docunentun sarà il prossimo passo dell'emancipazione di qualche forza armata europea dal monopolio Microsoft?

Developer / Potential Contributor Question: how to add a custom post/comment ranking algorithm to Lemmy?

How would I add a new ranking algorithm to Lemmy as a contributor? I'm a developer by trade, but unfamiliar with Rust and the codebase of Lemmy specifically. It doesn't seem like Lemmy has a concept of 'ranking plugins', so whatever I do would have to involve an MR.

Specifically, I'd like to introduce a ranking system that approximates Proportional Approval Voting, specifically using Thiele's elimination methods, like is used in LiquidFeedback.

I'm pretty sure that with a few tweaks to Thiele's rules, I can compute a complete ranking of all comments in a thread in O(ClogC + E + VlogC), where C is the number of comments, E is the total number of likes, and V is the number of users. This would also support partial approvals, upvotes could decay with age.

I believe this would mitigate the tendency towards echo chambers that Lemmy inherits from Reddit. Lemmy effectively uses Block Approval Voting with decays to rank comments and posts, leading to the same people dominating every conversation.

The ranking is implemented in a rather complicated way for performance reasons:
- First there are SQL functions which calculate the rank for a specific post or comment (defined here)
- These SQL functions are used by a scheduled task which updates post ranks at a regular interval (defined here)
- Then there are the database tables which store the calculated rank (eg post.hot_rank)
- Also the API parameters to specify the requested sort, and preferences for default sort options etc
- These params are used in the post listing db query to sort posts by the given rank field (here)

This is exactly the info I'm looking for, thanks! I knew there'd have to be some kind of scheduled task to recompute the rankings (IIRC the lemmy docs say ~10 minutes for recomputing ranks), I just wasn't sure where it was.

The change that would require the least effort to implement my voting system (whether the lemmy maintainers would accept the change notwithstanding) would be to target the schedule task, and introduce a server-wide configuration option that would allow admins to pick whether they're using Block Approval (what we have now) or Proportional Approval (what I'm introducing) based algorithms for their server's "hot" algorithm. No API or frontent changes required. Then, work towards community mods being able to set that on a per-community basis.

Something for me to experiment with, anyway.

Sounds interesting, though from your links it's not clear to me how exactly it works. Depending on that it could make more sense to implement as a separate sort option, then each user could try and compare it to the existing sorts.

I was thinking of it as a drop-in replacement for "hot" just so that it doesn't require any changes on the UI to implement. I'm a bit rusty with UI development, lol. The frontends wouldn't have to add a new button, and the Lemmy API wouldn't need to add a new sort type. That said, maybe that sort of thing is easy to do?

As far as it would work, Thiele's elimination rules is computed roughly as follows (I'm assuming that only upvotes are counted; I haven't considered yet if the process works if disapprovals count as a vote of "-1" or how the process could remain scalable if an abstention counts as a vote of "0.5":

For this algorithm, the yield the removed post statement will return the sorted posts in reverse order. So worst to best. You could also interpret that statement as "Give the post a rank in the final sorting of count(posts) - (i++)".

Thiele says that process can be used to elect a committee of size N by stopping your removal when N votes remain. But because it's a "house monotonic" process (electoral speak for "increasing the size of the committee by one and re-running an election is guaranteed not to cost any existing members their seat), I figure it could be repurposed to produce a ranking as well - the top one item is "best one", the top two items are the best two, the top three are the best three, etc.

To make the above process work for approvals that decay over time, we'd just treat a decayed approval as a partial approval. I still have some work to do on how exactly to integrate partial approvals into the "resistance to removing each post" calculations without ruining my time complexity. But basically it's a proportional score voting election instead of proportional approval.

Adding a new sort type is not a big deal, so dont worry about it. And a new admin setting for this would also require UI changes, so the new sort type is easier overall.

The current sort options calculate the rank for each post only from the data on that post (number of votes, creation time). Your suggested algorithm looks much more complicated than that, as it requires two iterations and needs to access data from multiple posts at once. Im not sure if this can really be implemented in a way thats performant enough for production use. Anyway feel free to open a pull request, then hopefully other contributors can help you to get it working.

I just noticed that my pictrs image volume reached 20 GBs in size. Does Lemmy or pictrs not delete the cached images automatically after some time?

I just changed to another distro (so I had to set everything up again) and I simply did not backup the pictrs volume because how much time it would've taken to transfer it from one machine to another. And well, it seems like what you said is not true. I can load any old post and I will still see its images.

The proxied images will be refetched from the origin if they cant be found locally. There should also be a configurable maximum size for the image cache but I dont see it mentioned in the pictrs readme. So like Dessalines said you need to ask the developer directly.

Why is peertube growth so sluggish?

I love the idea, but most servers only host a couple of videos, it's very hard to find enjoyable content on there and it's difficult to figure out which server could be a good server to make an account on...

I wouldn't mind a centralized aggregator of videos and maybe it could have a suggestions algorithm as well or whatever. Not that this would be ideal in the long term but it could help get the videos some views and make more content creators see this as a good alternative. It's not safe on youtube, people aren't even saying suicide anymore ffs

Edit: Even some renowned german media have their own peertube servers that they feed with high quality videos, but of course they have basically 0 views. (peertube.heise.de/, tube.taz.de/)

Since peertube isn't backed by native torrents (only webtorrents which aren't used by most torrenters), it means that individual servers are bearing an immense amount of hosting costs: hard drive space on VPS's, network bandwidth, encoding, etc.

This is a completely unsustainable model if you look at how much these things cost the people running them. 100GB alone of space on a VPS can cost more than $40 / month. and that's just a handful of videos.

Torrents have already solved this problem years ago, by distributing these costs among hundreds of seeders on their own personal computers. All that's needed is for people to learn how to seed their own videos, and post magnet links around.

Magnet links are fine for discoverability, you can post them on any platform (even this one), and there are a ton of good torrent specific search engines also.

Thanks. I don't know much about torrenting other, and I never looked into the concept of what Magnet links are.

It is actually very interesting! Such an elegant and simple solution.

And I think it is even simpler than what the instructions imply... I can write the following into the terminal:

And that's enough to pull the first episode of alien earth that you shared. That unique hash is all it takes to search for seeders. Very cool.

It always surprises me when ppl don't know about torrents. They were the only way to get things before streaming services privatized all this content, and still remain better, by using the latest encodings and quality formats for media.

It is still not obvious to me who would seed when implementing the torrent-based YouTube alternative.

Torrenters generally leave their torrent application open in the background, and seed whatever and however they'd like. Some create rules around how much and how often to seed, either based on ratios, time seeded, or speed limits. Others just seed forever at max. All the modern clients like qbitorrent or deluge can handle this, pausing the torrents when they meet given rules.

So new content would be no different than the thousands of people seeding existing content.

[Suggestion] Show number of comments on crossposts without having to open each one.

The line that shows the links to other crossposts should add a (#comments), if there is any, after each link.

Some links get crossposted to multiple communities but I don't know if any of these posts have any comments and it's tedious to check them out one by one, and in my experience most of them don't have any comments which discourages me from checking them out.

Also crosspost links could be in order of comments.

Another idea: instead of (#comments) it could be a different color or some other indicator.

There was some discussion about it in Dessalines's recent post. The reason I think it might be visually overwhelming is because of long titles and because sometimes there are a dozen crossposts. Maybe something like Photon's crossposts display can be combined with the other idea of showing comments from crossposts, two birds one stone kind of thing.

I'm just gonna copy a comment I made on Dessalines's post:

In addition to my other suggestions I think showing crossposts with their own comments would be very easy to understand and no one would miss the context because the title and body text of each post would be there. Basically add a section at the end that says "Crossposts" and have a little 🛈 or � next to it that explains the whole thing, when you click on "Crossposts" it expands and shows post previews like when you're browsing (with the + sign to see body text) and the comments appear below the preview. Having to expand it manually would help make the page look less cluttered. What I'm suggesting is that you have the Crossposts section at the bottom beneath the comments and for the user to be able to expand crossposts and read their post text and comments, essentially combining the crossposts display with the idea of fetching and showing comments from crossposts together.

Showing crossposts below comments doesnt work if you have a thread with 100+ comments as it keeps auto-loading more comments. Hiding the crosspost details themselves seems unnecessary as we render them rather small. A button to expand these small details into the full post view with comments also makes sense to me.

[Question] resilience to downtime

I'm looking for input on how well Lemmy responds to occasional downtime of up to a few days, specifically regarding how federation recovers after such an event.

Basically looking to know how amenable it is to selfhosting via reverse proxy from dodgy setups which are the best some of us proles can manage. I try to run some services where I can but my situation inevitably results in an event or three per year, on average, with some days down.

Outgoing federation actions are kept for 7 days. So if your instance is down shorter than that it will catch up with everything.

Storia, come sempre, complessa e non di facile comprensione soprattutto senza sapere esattamente come stanno le cose. Certo è che Proton dovrebbe essere più trasparente su cose come questa:

A month ago I just bought a xiaomi tablet for my main work machine. Full android, with no google play / google play services, and it runs f-droid and all the apps fine. Haven't missed any app on the google play store, or that require play services.

If google keeps on alienating people, people will move over to HarmonyOS, or a lot of the larger chinese companies making android devices will maintain their own AOSP fork, and google will be as irrelevant worldwide as apple is.

[Suggestion] Custom filtering of feed by keywords

I'd like to tweak my feed by hiding all posts containing certain key words, e.g. 'democracy, leftists, murder, liberals, fbi, market' etc.

Basic use case: Don't like what you see?
Select keyword -> click RMB -> "Fitler for a week". Now you won't see any posts with this keyword on any Lemmy instance.

Is it possible somehow? Maybe a client with this functionality exists? Does it sound useful to anyone but me?

Yep that's correct. Unfortunately a lot of apps start adding app-specific features (which is fine of course), but then don't make issues upstream about the lemmy back-end supporting it everywhere. Kind of a conflict of interest where devs want you to use their apps with the most killer features, but don't care about the rest of the eco-system or helping other apps at all.

No release date on 1.0 yet. The back-end is 99% ready, but we're rapidly updating [lemmy-ui] to get it ready also. Then jerboa is next, then a longer period of testing and bug-fixing.

Image upload support?

In lemmy you can just copy-paste an image into the markdown-text area. Which is quite useful I think.

Users have a media section in their profile, listing all their media-uploads.
Will Ibis support similar ways in the future? How would you go about implementing that?

Drawbacks:
* image uploads take more storage, cause higher server loads
* image uploads add another burden on moderators

So far this is not possible. What you can do is embed external images with ![](). In the future it would be possible to add the same image upload functionality that Lemmy has. However I dont have much time to work on Ibis, because it has so few users and few donations compared to Lemmy.

Signal needs a phone number. Why are we dismissing this as privacy versus anonymity when governments are blocking the registration SMS?

I really don’t get why so many people are turning this into a privacy versus anonymity debate when the real problem is censorship.

Yes, Signal needs a phone number to sign up, but replacing that with an email or username doesn’t make it anonymous. The real issue is that governments are blocking the registration SMS, so people can’t even sign up for the app in the first place.

Sure, there are workarounds, but most people aren’t going to jump through all those extra hoops just to use an app. If we want to spread privacy, how do we do that when Signal's phone number requirement is actively working against us?

Instead of arguing over privacy versus anonymity, shouldn’t we focus on making sure everyone can access Signal without issues? What do you think?

SimpleX is promising, but seems very new.

Telegram is better than Signal on many angles, but has other problems.

I don't think there is a perfect app yet. But Signal's aggressive marketing is security-theater, not real security.

Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck during an event at Utah Valley University, according to eyewitness accounts and reports from Deseret News.

• Cosa include: vestiti, scarpe, accessori, cappelli, lenzuola, tende, etc.

• Colpire il fast fashion: gli stati potranno far pagare di più ai marchi i cui prodotti sono meno durevoli o riciclabili, prendendo di mira esplicitamente i modelli business dell'ultra-fast fashion.

Perché è una notizia importante?
Questa legge ribalta completamente il sistema: l'onere dei rifiuti non graverà più su comuni e cittadini, ma direttamente sui produttori. Questo crea un forte incentivo economico a produrre capi più durevoli, riparabili e riciclabili, segnando potenzialmente la fine del business model "produci-vendi-getta".

Secure and private or anonymous are very different things and nearly impossible to do both at the same time and still make it user friendly. Signal is secure, not fully private or anonymous.

Pulizie nel Fediverso.

Oggi ho fatto un po’ di pulizia su Snowfan.
Tra i follower ho trovato di tutto: account sospesi, profili fermi da anni con zero post e zero interazioni, account già migrati altrove… Insomma, un bel cimitero digitale.

Su circa 800 follower, ne sono rimasti 339: più della metà erano “zombie”.

Può darsi che per errore sia finito nel mucchio anche qualcuno di attivo, e se così fosse mi scuso: nessun problema, si rimedia sempre.

Questa esperienza però ci ricorda una cosa importante: fare pulizia ogni tanto è sano, non solo a livello d'account, anche (specialmente) a livello di server. Mantiene leggere le istanze, riduce i costi e aiuta a concentrarsi su ciò che conta davvero: le persone attive, presenti e partecipi.

Certo, fa scena dire “ho 10.000 follower”, ma che senso ha se la maggior parte non esiste più? È solo peso inuti

Buongiorno, non so se sia il posto giusto per questo topic, non ne ho trovati di più pertinenti, in caso spostatemi pure.
Mi chiedevo se esista un modo per seguire profili X e Instagram tramite lettori feed rss o altro. Spulciando su Le alternative ho scaricato Newsblur, non mi permette di seguire i profili che mi interessano, ma vedo che ce ne sono altri suggeriti che invece possono essere seguiti (solo per X).
Magari esiste un generatore specifico da applicare..

Purtroppo le fonti principali di notizie che seguo sono profili di giornalisti Instagram o X, ogni consiglio per smarcarsi da queste piattaforme (gratis) è ben accetto. Grazie in anticipo per la pazienza.

Da li cerchi gli account che ti servono, poi in alto a destra trovi l'icona per i feed rss. Puoi generare un feed per ogni utente e poi importarlo nel tuo client rss preferito. (Consiglio di non abusare coi profili da seguire altrimenti salta tutto)

Come fare per ascoltare bene da computer un CD 'protetto'?

Vi ricordate quando nei primi anni 2000 i CD musicali erano fatti in modo che se provavi ad ascoltarli in un computer si sentivano male?
Lo facevano per scoraggiare le copie, fare gli mp3, ecc.

Ma oggi questa cosa si può aggirare?

Ad esempio, di recente ho messo le mani su Meteora dei Linkin Park (sì, sono un romantico collezionista) e con mia sorpresa, quando lo metto nel pc si sente in quel modo. Sia Linux che Windows.

Mi direte che posso semplicemente ascoltarlo nella radio, e infatti è ciò che faccio di solito, ma mi ha comunque stupito.
Oggigiorno esiste un modo per far leggere bene dal pc un CD di questo tipo?

Can't we do anything as google is killing AOSP and custom ROMS

It feel like we’re losing to Google, day by day. They aren’t killing AOSP directly, but they are making it useless step by step.

Now it’s Google Play Services, Play Integrity checks, installation source checks… more and more apps just refuse to run without GMS. Banking apps? Most of them don’t work. And it’s only getting worse.
I run vanilla AOSP on my main profile, no Play Services. I keep GMS only in my work profile for the apps that absolutely need it. But now even some regular apps that don't need any play services won’t work on my main profile anymore. They simply block your from running , like le chat.

Maps is google's most important app there is no way to run without play services. Sure we can use webview or gmaps wv, but they don't provide turn-by-turn directions.
Earlier maps used to work without play services, but two years ago, an update stopped it from working. Now that old version is out of date and no longer works.

Google is slowly making GMS very important to run.

Of the largest android sellers, only samsung requires gplay. Xiaomi, vivo, oppo, realme, honor, are all chinese companies that require non-bundled google play for their domestic (and maybe other countries?) releases. Google can't alienate these sellers, and if they did, all of these companies would create their own AOSP fork (or just switch to HarmonyOS)

I recently bought a xiaomi android tablet that doesn't have google play services luckily.

Final thoughts re: FediCon 2025

As I write this, I'm sitting on an airplane flying over the Canadian prairies on my way home from Vancouver, BC. What an amazing group of individuals, who took the time out of their extraordinarily busy lives to see, hear, and learn about the fediverse!

What an amazing group of individuals, who took the time out of their extraordinarily busy lives to see, hear, and learn about the fediverse! The connections made and ideas discussed were so important, and you could feel the energy in the air.

You'd think after a solid six hours a day in a lecture hall would be enough, but at every opportunity in between, there were lively discussions about ActivityPub and the fediverse. It turns out when you get all of us in a group together we can talk and continue to talk about the open social web for ages.

I now have a to-do list about a kilometer long, they all need to get done ASAP!

Thank you to reiver@mastodon.social for organizing this conference, all of those who helped out and participated, and all those who attended.

From now on, whenever someone points a camera to me, I'll picture jaz@toot.wales saying "say FEEEEEEDIVERSE".

Un mese di sperimentazione con Citiverse.it. Come visualizzare le categorie di Citiverse con il tuo account Feddit? Il riassunto per gli utenti Lemmy

Un mese fa @skariko@feddit.it e io abbiamo ininziato a sperimentare su NodeBB con l'ambizione di creare un'alternativa federata ai gruppi Facebook, soprattutto quelli locali.
Per chi lo visita direttamente dal sito, Citiverse è un Forum; ma per chi lo usa dal Fediverso, Citiverse è un'istanza qualsiasi, con le "categorie" del Forum che diventano "gruppi Activitypub", come le comunità Lemmy.
Per gli utenti Lemmy poi la questione è ancora più facile: le categorie NodeBB sono indistinguibili dalle comunità Lemmy!
Al momento abbiamo creato una settantina di comunità, suddivise per macrocategorie.

🔍 La fine degli hashtag su Mastodon e l'evoluzione verso i gruppi lemmy

Con l’ultima versione si #Mastodon, su browser, cliccando su un hashtag da browser non si accede più alla pagina dedicata: il sistema ora propone solo un filtro che limita ai post dell’utente che lo ha utilizzato oppure come seconda scelta alla pagina completa con tutti gli interventi del #fediverso.

Perché?

Perché?

Gli hashtag su Mastodon stanno diventando sempre meno utilizzabili: sono pesantemente monopolizzati da pochi gruppi, soprattutto in lingua inglese, privi di localizzazione. Questo limita fortemente la loro funzionalità in contesti linguistici diversi.
Nelle piccole istanze, le pagine hashtag sono spesso quasi vuote o inesistenti. Questo succede perché tali server non federano su larga scala e hanno poca esposizione: se pochi utenti usano e seguono un tag, non emergono risultati rilevanti. Di conseguenza, molti hashtag finiscono nel vuoto, perdendo ogni utilità.

In sintesi: i tag diventano contenitori vuoti, incapaci di aggregare contenuti coerenti, soprattutto su istanze minori, creando un’esperienza disfunzionale.

📉 Problemi principali identificati

Monopolio dei pochi: pochi server anglofoni saturano gli hashtag, lasciando poco spazio a voci locali o linguisticamente diverse.
Mastodon offre solo una ricerca full-text parziale: i risultati mostrati si limitano alle istanze con la ricerca attivata e solo per gli utenti che hanno attivato l'inclusione nella ricerca che di default è disattivata.
Scarsa federazione: le piccole comunità rimangono isolate e incapaci di far emergere contenuti attraverso hashtag.
Scarsa discoverability: Se gli hashtag diventano inutilizzabili o marginali, il fediverso rimane senza la possibilità di avere temi da seguire.

💡 Analisi dei rischi e conseguenze

Perdita di visibilità tematica
Senza una pagina hashtag funzionante, post interessanti rischiano di rimanere sepolti dal rumore i fondo.
Depotenziamento delle istanze minori
Senza hashtag usabili, le piccole community faticano a costruire audience e rilevanza.
Deriva dell'hashtag individuale
Con il filtro hashtag per utente, ogni post diventa un’occasione per l'autopromozione individuale, e l’hashtag smette di essere un aggregatore utile.

🛠️ Soluzione: gruppi tematici sul fediverso o hashtag d'istanza

Il futuro non sono gli hashtag generici, ma i gruppi tematici e gli hashtag d'istanza:

#Lemmy dimostra che le community organizzate in gruppi (tematici) permettono:
- contenuti pertinenti
- moderazione attiva
- crescita organizzata e senza spam
- ogni post raggiunge davvero chi è interessato
- la moderazione mantiene la qualità alta
- si evita la saturazione e l’enshittification degli hashtag
È inoltre fondamentale promuovere hashtag locali o linguisticamente specifici per rafforzare la coesione interna all’istanza, come suggerisce l’articolo di Chris Messina su Medium. Questo può restituire utilità al hashtag anche in ambienti ristretti.
Su mastodon.uno da anni si usano hashtag personalizzati per istanza, semplicemente aggiungendo una parte del nome dell’istanza all’hashtag.
È così che sono nati tag come #Uno, collegati rispettivamente alle loro community locali.

Grazie a Mastodon, è possibile seguire gli argomenti che ci interessano a livello locale, ad esempio visitando la pagina dell’hashtag #Uno.
In questo modo si possono ricevere solo i messaggi a tema, evitando di essere sommersi da contenuti non rilevanti provenienti da tutto il Fediverso:

antonej bravo! #DreamFarm ha tutte le carte in regola per divenire la #MozzarellaVegan più buono al mondo al momento, gli manca veramente poco per riprodurre il tutto eccellentemente senza latte e sfruttamento di animali :heart_eyes:

Hey so lemmy.ml folks there is this bot account that copies comics from here to lemmy.world. I initially just blocked the user so that in my feed I could see mine without duplicates but I was looking over what it does and this is an experiment im doing with the title. If it gets copied over as I think it will then I will keep the format.

FOLLOWUP EDIT - So looks like the user had to edit the bot behavior which at least causes them to have to put some individual effort into it so I will keep it up while I look it over.

There’s nothing stopping you from using a bot for the original post.

The community size is likely more a reflection of the fact that .ml is defederated by many instances and blocked by a large number of users.
