Thumb-Key not appearing on Android Studio emulated device

I'm using Android Studio on Windows 11, and trying to debug ThumbKey on an emulated device.

For some reason, the ThumbKey keyboard doesn't appear.

Looking at the logs in Logcat, there is one suspicious line:

2025-07-24 19:50:30.200 4769-4769 ImeBackDispatcher com.dessalines.thumbkey.debug E Ime callback not found. Ignoring unregisterReceivedCallback. callbackId: 88733492

I'm new to Android dev, so I'm not sure how to debug this.

I tried fiddling with the keyboard settings of the emulated device, and some other proposed solutions I found on StackOverflow, but nothing I tried worked so far.

I am testing this on version 5.0.3 (commit acad975f51d7b399a567b2d1217a3209b6bbef96)

More suspicious logs that appear when I click a text input field (and the keyboard fails to appear):

in reply to Toldry

It should show an error, not just a debug line, if it's failing to open. I'd recommend just using a real device instead of an emulator.

Always noteworthy that western countries (the US especially) never had the equivalent of a "red-scare", but for nazis and other stripes of fascists. Instead they hired them to help in the colonial project as cops, feds, prison guards, and intelligence assets.

The oil magnates were the first to perceive the prize that could be extracted from the wide distribution of the motorcar. If people could be induced to travel in cars, they could be sold the fuel necessary to move them. For the first time in history, people would become dependent for their locomotion on a commercial source of energy. There would be as many customers for the oil industry as there were motorists—and since there would be as many motorists as there were families, the entire population would become the oil merchants’ customers. The dream of every capitalist was about to come true. Everyone was going to depend for their daily needs on a commodity that a single industry held as a monopoly.

Gary’s Videos: A Relatable Journey of Discovery (and Frustration!)

Ever watch a tech video and feel like you’re looking in a mirror? Gary’s videos perfectly capture the real-world struggles and triumphs of exploring new systems, making them a must-watch for anyone who’s ever debugged their way through a late night.

Every time a new video from Gary – @garyhtech – comes out, regardless of the topic (which is mainly about BSDs, but not only), I already know I’ll have to take the time to watch it. The reason is very simple: his videos are fantastic. He records himself and comments while doing things, and in many situations, it feels like I’m watching myself. I tackle something new, and it doesn’t work, or I realize I’ve made a mistake and start reprimanding myself. Gary does all this on camera. Sometimes he succeeds, sometimes he doesn’t, but that’s not what matters… what really matters is the process and how he approaches it.

The latest video, published yesterday, is “FreeBSD User tries NetBSD! Is it much Different?”. And, in my opinion, it’s worth watching just for the title alone.

Slightly more than a year ago, I had some time at hands and commenced poking BSD systems - right after listening to several @garyhtech videos.

I'm given to the idea that MKUltra never ended, just switched format/medium from drugs to tech. The money and resources being poured onto AI, the uniform adoption and enforcement of it in social media, education, and work, the same way that it prays on the psychologically vulnerable - idk, yeah there's the suppression of wages for skilled work that's going on, but just as well, they've found their "ethical" way to throw LSD in the public water supply and see what happens.

For the few ppl advocating pacifism below, seems like a good time to read this:

in reply to db0

I know this is an anarchy community, but peaceful protests have been successful before. And the thing is, if the authority literally fired and killed a civilian, the authority will immediately lose legitimacy. This is what protestors are railing on. They are like "what are you gonna do kill us?"
in reply to TankovayaDiviziya

Their goal is your death or pacification, there's no reason to do their job for them. If you want to see the disgusting depths pacifism goes to, look at this gandhi quote:

in reply to Dessalines

No one said anything about voting. But if peaceful means does not work, let them fire the first shot and then fire back.

Dessalines doesn't like this.

in reply to TankovayaDiviziya

If you let them fire first, then you die. Why let them harm you at all?

This is kind of pointless because I know you don't have the patience to read an article anyway.

in reply to Dessalines

You do realise that firing at the authorities first will give them perfect justification and legitimises their use of force? This is literally what Trump is waiting for. It is a blinking game and see who blinks first. You don't give the ruling corrupt power any more legitimacy.
in reply to TankovayaDiviziya

How does letting a cop shoot you, give you "legitimacy"? Self-defense is not some corrupting infectious disease, and a refusal to be bullied is honorable.

I know you won't read this, but at least others should know the religious basis of these pacifist arguments:

in reply to Ginny [they/she]

Well, it did propel further the withdrawal of US from Vietnam. It further de-legitimised US involvement in Vietnam by the public.

This time is far more consequential and existential though. If the guardsmen and marines killed any of LA civilians, it could cause a civil war and perhaps the collapse of the United States as we know it. But you still would not want to be the one to fire the first shot and give Trump legitimacy.

Questa voce è stata modificata (6 mesi fa)

Well, it did propel further the withdrawal of US from Vietnam.

The Vietnamese people themselves did that. The US anti-war protest movement was a great thing, but the Vietnamese people defeated the US empire through their own efforts.

This is awful mod behaviour...

I used to see this on Reddit, I'm disappointed this behaviour is also on Lemmy.

Users collecting mod status on multiple communities, and then using that power to mass-ban a single user from a bunch of communities.

Modlog show how incredibly trigger happy some mods can be. Minor transgressions, deserving to have their comment removed at least, but then banned from unrelated communities as a consequence. This will only get worse as users become supermods.

in reply to lazynooblet

That person was banned for anti-semitism and various other trolling: lemmy.ml/modlog?userId=1775826… . And banning from each community is the current hack for how to also do instance bans(fixed already in main)

Creating public modlogs was almost pointless, because people just use screenshots instead of actual modlog links.

in reply to Dessalines

I just learnt this in another comment. I didn't realise instance bans were reported like this.

Re: screenshots -- this community rules require censored screenshots.

in reply to lazynooblet

No probs. It's always better to link the actual modlog, otherwise you have no idea why someone was banned.
in reply to Dessalines

The account you linked is from lazysoci.al but the one in the screenshot is from lemmy.world. It looks like it's this one lemmy.ml/modlog?page=1&actionT…
in reply to Skua

Ah. That person is telling people to kill themselves, so that ban also makes sense.

in reply to Ascend910

If we take most reliable estimates of the casualties than happened in the june 4th incident, ~200, then US cops kill more than that in 2 months.

Or if you want a single internal incident, during the Waco siege the US burned alive ~90 people, many women and children included.

Why use `Room` and not `DataStore`?

I'm new to Android dev, and I recently added my first contribution to ThumbKey (the Key Modifications feature).

I noticed that ThumbKey saves user settings using a Room database rather than using DataStore, or its outdated equivalent SharedPreferences.

Why is that? What's the advantage?

in reply to Toldry

You can use either, but I will never use anything but SQL-type databases for data storage. I've been burned too many times with alternative data storage methods that didn't think through all the problems sql devs have dealt with for decades.

Recommendations for Nonfiction books on Communist China

Hello!

May I please have some book recommendations on Communist China? I am interested in learning about the origins of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). I would like to understand the events leading up to the formation of the PRC, the rise of the CCP, and the development of Communist China. I am particularly interested in learning about key figures such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, Liu Shaoqi, Deng Xiaoping, and Xi Jinping, as well as other prominent leaders.

in reply to pieck

For a longer history, I highly recommend CGTN's historic journey video series. It's a 20 or so part series (10 hours in all) that was created to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the CPC. It spans the entire history of modern China to the present day, and touches on all the lessons learned. It's very watchable and you'll go through all the important figures, periods, and struggles.

This one isn't history but is a must read: Roland Boer's socialism with chinese characteristics, a guide for foreigners.

An extremely advanced but thorough book (i'm about 70% done with it), is Jin Huiming's - Marxism and Socialism with Chinese characteristics.

I haven't read these yet, but Edgar Snow's red star over china, and anna louise strong's the rise of the chinese people's communes document different periods while they were happening, and have interviews with many of the leaders above.

Also good to read their source material, including the quotation of Mao Zedong, and Deng Xiaoping's selected works. These are both remarkably readable and insightful.

This is an amazing initiative!! 🌍

The small problem with OpenStreetMap IDs is that they're not stable. This can happen for example:

- a node/way keeps its id but gets moved around, or

- a new node/way gets created with a new id but it really describes the same previously deleted object

There are various systems to come up with stable IDs all with their own pros and cons but no good one-fits-all solution.

Maybe fine for a prototype for now but we need to keep this in mind.

Mastodon to Lemmy post formatting rules questions

in reply to Agent Karyo

Lemmy dev here. Making the same post to multiple communities is not possible, so you need to post multiple times tagging a different community each time. Links are taken from Activitypub attachment, but Mastodon only seems to support image attachments. So it is not possible to add other types of links unless Mastodon adds an option for that. Markdown would also have to be supported by Mastodon.

There are various other microblogging platforms on the Fediverse which may support these features and may be better suited to your purpose. For example Mbin, Hometown, Pleroma, Misskey or Mitra to name just a few.

I was testing a new feature for Lemmy 1.0, native binary releases in addition to Docker. Sorry if it spammed your notifications, should have marked them as draft or prerelease.

[RESOLVED] Community icon/banner not showing uploaded image?

Right now, it shows a generic error image.

Are there specific resolution requirements, or?

EDIT:
It solved itself. I guess Lemmy lags a little when propagating new community icons/banners.

There are no specific requirements, it seems the upload simply failed. Try to upload again, and if it doesnt work contact your instance admin.

Lemmy 1.0 will have automatic resizing for uploaded avatars and banners. Based on your post I also added some more config options to resize other uploads (for post images and markdown embeds). As well as options to disable video/animation uploads.

301/308 are meant to permanently update old identifiers regardless of request headers. consider 303 See Other for content negotiation purposes, or consider rel=alternate type=… Link headers otherwise.

How has learning a language as an adult helped you to learn about a culture / gain new perspective?

I personally feel like I understand German-speaking people better the more I study the language.

E.g. my experience was that they are generally good listeners because their language has a sentence structure which forces the listener to wait for the most important information at the end of a sentence.

Bad Denglish to demonstrate:

"I have yesterday night...
at the football field....
together with friends ...
(dude get to the point)
had a beer"

in reply to Lazycog

Funny, as a German speaker who learned Spanish its exactly the other way round. Here people already start responding to what you say before you can finish the sentence. And generally people love to talk very fast.

Five Confusing Fediverse Things

in reply to Meldrik

Happy to see that the Peertube embed is working now (Lemmy 0.19.9)

Onboarding experience needs to be simpler for mass adoption

If the fediverse is to be adopted by the masses, the onboarding experience needs to change. A new user can't be presented with a choice of instances as part of signing up or at least the process of making the choice needs to dumbed down a lot. I don't know how or if this can be solved, I just know as someone involved in app development and UX that the current experience won't work.

My mother would not know how to handle this paragraph:
"Lemmy.world is one node in a network of hundreds of Lemmy instances. Before you sign up here, take a moment to explore all the instances at lemmyverse.net. You may find an instance with a regional or topical emphasis that speaks to you! Don’t worry about being left out; Lemmy instances are interconnected so users from each instance can participate with communities on other instances."

For mass adoption it needs to be so simple that even non-techie older people can get through it without feeling like they might be doing something wrong.

in reply to draum

I think they should stick to the "email provider" analogy. Whole paragraph should be something like:

The only thing you need to start interacting with the Fediverse is an account with one of the many providers, just like with email! Providers are freely available across the globe: pick one that suits your location or interests best! You can start browsing the content of nearly the entire Fediverse from whatever provider you choose. Don't worry, you can always create an account with a different provider later.

You could add a sentence or two about where to find sensible defaults or link an article that explains the more subtle things.

I think the emphasis on instances (and not naming them the more familiar providers) hinders adoption.

great to hear they were recorded and will be released. re the different communities that fedi can benefit, my focus is on the civic potential. that we can someday have our public conversation most influenced by the info and ideas the public thinks deserve attention, not big money media & advertisers. for that to ever be true, we need mass adoption. we need it integrated into all media. and we also need to deal harshly with harassment, but kindly with other stuff we don't like :)

Re: FEP 7888 serving up an OrderedCollection

@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social @pfefferle@mastodon.social I fixed up NodeBB's janky handling of collections and now I am able to import an entire Frequency conversation via its context :tada:

I think @silverpill@mitra.social is right though, your context.first needs an id. I worked around it but it's better to have it so it can be referenced against by another page's prev.

Re: FEP 7888 serving up an OrderedCollection

@silverpill@mitra.social said in FEP 7888 serving up an OrderedCollection:
> Do you mean replies made by the context owner specifically?

Correct, or more specifically, at least for all replies coming from the instance that the context owner belongs to... so other sibling replies by users on that instance should also report that same context.

in reply to silverpill

the context SHOULD be copied if you want to participate in the same context, but the owner MAY Add whatever they want to an arbitrary Collection

context-unaware impls aren't prevented from participating but this will lead to a degraded experience if you're not careful. likely you would start with some graph source, filter for context, then optionally crawl replies for anything missing or otherwise optionally reverse query inReplyTo

in reply to julian

@julian

yes, but they serve objects because we're radical implementors who don't do the whole activities thing 😝 sorry in advance.

What if only the activity is signed (as is often the case) and the object is not fetchable due to let's say some network error?

in reply to julian

julian:

individual objects serve a context property that context property is a URL that resolves

One of the concerns raised was related to the OrderedCollection of items served by the context. Specifically, if the items presented in the collection were not in chronological order, NodeBB failed at importing some of the items as the inReplyTo referenced an object that did not exist.

The solution to this was to ensure that the collection items were in chronological order from oldest to newest. Once fixed:

the context resolved to an OrderedCollection containing objects NodeBB was able to pull in the entire conversation

Just a note that I endorse @julian's suggested approach here, and this is how the Discourse plugin has implemented its backfill feature.

I find it hilarious that the comment replies on this forbes.com article, are way farther left and more aware of the US's hypocrisies than the average liberal lemmy server commenters.

The article was also just the standard orientalist "our open transparent freedom-loving democracy" vs "their authoritarian 1984 surveillance regime", with an emphasis on "protecting our youths from the evil commies". Not a shred of self reflection after the US just committed the thing they're accusing China of doing.
