Una grave vulnerabilità nel sistema SPID (Public Digital Identity System) consente di creare diverse identità digitali utilizzando lo stesso codice fiscale, senza che il titolare venga avvisato. Attraverso questo difetto, è possibile attivare credenziali parallele, rubare informazioni personali, trasferimenti e pensioni di Hijack Bank, conti correnti aperti e persino iniziare le procedure pubbliche in nome delle vittime inconsapevoli.
Il problema è noto da un po 'di tempo, denunciato da esperti di sicurezza informatica (Stefano Fratepietro e Paolo Dal checkco, tra gli altri) e recentemente messi alla luce da segnalazioni di organismi autorevoli come INPS, che conferma la rapida diffusione di queste truffe. One is that Palestinians are a semitic peoples, while the settlers are nearly all euro-amerikkkan origin. So even by Israel's blood quantum calculus, they have much less claim to the land than the indigenous peoples do.

I know this is an anarchy community, but peaceful protests have been successful before. And the thing is, if the authority literally fired and killed a civilian, the authority will immediately lose legitimacy. This is what protestors are railing on. They are like "what are you gonna do kill us?"

Well, it did propel further the withdrawal of US from Vietnam. It further de-legitimised US involvement in Vietnam by the public.

This time is far more consequential and existential though. If the guardsmen and marines killed any of LA civilians, it could cause a civil war and perhaps the collapse of the United States as we know it. But you still would not want to be the one to fire the first shot and give Trump legitimacy.

This is awful mod behaviour...

I used to see this on Reddit, I'm disappointed this behaviour is also on Lemmy.

Users collecting mod status on multiple communities, and then using that power to mass-ban a single user from a bunch of communities.

Modlog show how incredibly trigger happy some mods can be. Minor transgressions, deserving to have their comment removed at least, but then banned from unrelated communities as a consequence. This will only get worse as users become supermods.

That person was banned for anti-semitism and various other trolling: lemmy.ml/modlog?userId=1775826… . And banning from each community is the current hack for how to also do instance bans(fixed already in main)

Creating public modlogs was almost pointless, because people just use screenshots instead of actual modlog links.

Il 12 giugno dalle ore 19 alla Casa del Parco in Caffarella si terrà il primo appuntamento formativo organizzato da Tech Workers Coalition (TWC) Roma, sezione cittadina dell'organizzazione internazionale alt-labour che si propone di migliorare le condizioni delle lavoratrici e dei lavoratori del settore tecnologico.

Siamo programmatori, ingegneri, sistemisti, grafici, copywriter, analisti software. Insieme possiamo cambiare il modo in cui (non) funziona l'industria tecnologica. Abbiamo questioni importanti da affrontare come body rental e partite Iva, smart working e orari di lavoro, adeguamenti all'inflazione e gender pay gap, ruolo delle Rsu e Rsa, diritto alla disconnessione e reperibilità, rinnovi contrattuali nazionali (Ccnl) e aziendali, vertenze in corso, presidi e scioperi.

Lavoriamo tutti i giorni con la tecnologia, possiamo quindi anche utilizzarla per coordinarci e organizzarci. L'appuntamento di formazione sindacale sarà un'occasione per conoscerci, parlare dei problemi e acquisire competenze sui nostri diritti per migliorare la nostra condizione lavorativa.

Has anyone explored a decentralized, federated alternative to Know Your Meme (KYM)?

Know Your Meme (KYM) is a long-established platform that documents and researches internet memes, viral videos, catchphrases, and more. It uses a hybrid model of community wiki-style contributions and professional editorial oversight, making it a rich historical archive of online culture. Originally part of Rocketboom in 2007, KYM was later acquired by Cheezburger Network (2011) and then Literally Media (2016). It's even recognized by the U.S. Library of Congress.

However, as comprehensive and useful as KYM is, it's still a centralized platform. That centralization limits control, transparency, and long-term resilience, especially when meme culture itself thrives in decentralized, community-driven spaces.

This got me thinking: has anyone ever considered a decentralized and federated alternative to KYM? Something built on the ActivityPub protocol (like Lemmy, Peertube, Mastodon, etc.), where communities could:

Why use `Room` and not `DataStore`?

I'm new to Android dev, and I recently added my first contribution to ThumbKey (the Key Modifications feature).

I noticed that ThumbKey saves user settings using a Room database rather than using DataStore, or its outdated equivalent SharedPreferences.

Why is that? What's the advantage?

You can use either, but I will never use anything but SQL-type databases for data storage. I've been burned too many times with alternative data storage methods that didn't think through all the problems sql devs have dealt with for decades.

Mediawiki code compatibility

There was an attempt to import an article from a MediaWiki based site to ibis.wiki however the codes do not show correctly.

Hopefully something is done in order to add Mediawiki code compatibility as part of the feature in future updates.

Ibis uses markdown, not wikitext because the former has better support in Rust. There are some tools for converting from wikitext to markdown for example this one. By the way ibis.wiki is specifically for articles related to open source projects, you can use open.ibis.wiki for other topics.

Recommendations for Nonfiction books on Communist China

Hello!

May I please have some book recommendations on Communist China? I am interested in learning about the origins of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). I would like to understand the events leading up to the formation of the PRC, the rise of the CCP, and the development of Communist China. I am particularly interested in learning about key figures such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, Liu Shaoqi, Deng Xiaoping, and Xi Jinping, as well as other prominent leaders.

For a longer history, I highly recommend CGTN's historic journey video series. It's a 20 or so part series (10 hours in all) that was created to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the CPC. It spans the entire history of modern China to the present day, and touches on all the lessons learned. It's very watchable and you'll go through all the important figures, periods, and struggles.

This one isn't history but is a must read: Roland Boer's socialism with chinese characteristics, a guide for foreigners.

An extremely advanced but thorough book (i'm about 70% done with it), is Jin Huiming's - Marxism and Socialism with Chinese characteristics.

I haven't read these yet, but Edgar Snow's red star over china, and anna louise strong's the rise of the chinese people's communes document different periods while they were happening, and have interviews with many of the leaders above.

Also good to read their source material, including the quotation of Mao Zedong, and Deng Xiaoping's selected works. These are both remarkably readable and insightful.

I have been trying to use this for the last year it's a very strange #UX I think this alien feeling comes from it being built for the #indieweb which is a subculture of the #openweb reboot.

I keep it installed on my #WP as i feel it must be useful, but haven't found a use for it yet, the is something that I can't get my head around in its #UX

I’m making an initial version of places.pub available today. places.pub is a collection of Place objects suitable for use in geosocial applications on the ActivityPub network.

One important need for geosocial software is that all objects in ActivityPub, including Place objects, need to have a permanent URL as their id property, which shares the description of that object in Activity Streams 2.0 format. However, there isn’t a good dataset of geographical objects — countries, states or provinces or regions, cities, buildings, businesses, parks, streets — available in AS2 on the Web right now. That is slowing down experimentation in the Geosocial Task Force.

Using the service

So, I worked on making places.pub for geosocial hackers to experiment with. It’s a service that exposes places from the amazing OpenStreetMap collection of data as AS2 objects on the Web. So, given an OpenStreetMap object like the Rogers Centre Ottawa, it provides an AS2 version suitable for use in geosocial activities in ActivityPub. It also has a rudimentary search mechanism, although I think most users will want to use the Nominatim service for searching the OpenStreetMap database, and then map the IDs onto places.pub.

Once you know the places.pub ID for a place, you can use it for geotagging objects, people, activities, or using special geosocial activity types like check in, check out, and travel. There is a good list of examples on the places.pub home page, but obviously this is not an exhaustive list!

How it is built

This wasn’t my first time trying to build places.pub; I’d done two earlier versions with different architectures and the same interface. The first time out, about 7 years ago, I created a full NodeJS server that used a full mirror of the OpenStreetMap database, so I didn’t need to hit the OSM API to fetch data. It worked pretty well, but it was really expensive — hundreds of dollars per month to keep a database server of that size running and synched.

I tried a second version a few months ago, which did batch generation of AS2 Place objects from the OpenStreetMap exports, and then uploaded them to the S3 service at Amazon Web Services. This was a whole lot cheaper, but it took a long time to download, convert, and re-upload the data.

This third implementation, with source code available on GitHub, is a little bit easier than both. Instead of sloshing the huge OSM dataset back and forth, I used the version of the data stored in the Google Cloud Public Datasets system on BigQuery. This let me ignore the effort of moving data, and just focus on giving it a good ActivityPub-compatible interface using a Google Cloud Run function. It seems to work pretty nicely.

Next steps

I’d love to see some experimentation with using places.pub for geosocial activity in the social web. I’m going to work on some implementations in my own ActivityPub software. If you find problems with the software, please add an issue on GitHub or let me know on the Fediverse at @evanprodromou.

This is an amazing initiative!! 🌍

The small problem with OpenStreetMap IDs is that they're not stable. This can happen for example:

- a node/way keeps its id but gets moved around, or

- a new node/way gets created with a new id but it really describes the same previously deleted object

There are various systems to come up with stable IDs all with their own pros and cons but no good one-fits-all solution.

Maybe fine for a prototype for now but we need to keep this in mind.

This works really well. You attach an image on Mastodon and it outputs the correct thumbnail on Lemmy (it even works across instances, I know there are issues with LW vs other instances in custom thumbnail attach).

Doesn't seem to work on the Mastodon side. Not a big deal, the only somewhat relevant piece is the markdown URL syntax, but I can just use [Text - UR

Lemmy dev here. Making the same post to multiple communities is not possible, so you need to post multiple times tagging a different community each time. Links are taken from Activitypub attachment, but Mastodon only seems to support image attachments. So it is not possible to add other types of links unless Mastodon adds an option for that. Markdown would also have to be supported by Mastodon.

There are various other microblogging platforms on the Fediverse which may support these features and may be better suited to your purpose. For example Mbin, Hometown, Pleroma, Misskey or Mitra to name just a few.

Curious about socialism

Hi! I am a stranger on this instance, I have read a lot of warnings about the "tankie triad", but wanted to see for myself and keep an open mind.

I understand how capitalism works, and I have doubts that it is a sustainable system for society long term, but social democracy has been a good way of keeping capitalism in-check in Norway. So even if capitalism is not ideal, it is in theory possible to tax the rich more and keep the whole thing going in the future. I also understand the exploitation and the extraction of surplus value, rent seeking etc.

Other capitalist countries such as the US is currently struggling with basic human needs. And that is "the shining beacon of capitalism".

In Norway it has for a long time been common to use the US as an example of what not to do.

Problem

I had several photos which wouldn't post for some reason. After poking around a bit, I found out that my home server has an upload size limit of 5 MB.

Now, an upload size limit is perfectly reasonable. Storage is expensive, and Lemmy is primarily designed for link aggregation and discussion, not file hosting.

However, the way Lemmy currently behaves when it encounters a large file is not ideal, and varies depending on the app/UI.

At best, you get a cryptic error message like {"data":{"msg":"Exceeded maximum dimensions","files":null},"state":"success"} or {"data":{"files":null,"msg":"Too many pixels"},"state":"success"}, and at worst, your webpage/app stalls for an indefinite amount of time.

Solution?

Obviously, it would be prudent to improve the comprehensibility of the error messages, but if there were a way to automatically compress large images to below the size limit, that would eliminate the error me

Lemmy 1.0 will have automatic resizing for uploaded avatars and banners. Based on your post I also added some more config options to resize other uploads (for post images and markdown embeds). As well as options to disable video/animation uploads.

A common use case from fediverse users is to be linked out to a site, and attempt to "bring it in" to their local instance/app of choice. This is done by taking the browser URL and pasting it into their site/app's search bar, or equivalent.

I personally feel like I understand German-speaking people better the more I study the language.

E.g. my experience was that they are generally good listeners because their language has a sentence structure which forces the listener to wait for the most important information at the end of a sentence.

Onboarding experience needs to be simpler for mass adoption

If the fediverse is to be adopted by the masses, the onboarding experience needs to change. A new user can't be presented with a choice of instances as part of signing up or at least the process of making the choice needs to dumbed down a lot. I don't know how or if this can be solved, I just know as someone involved in app development and UX that the current experience won't work.

My mother would not know how to handle this paragraph:
"Lemmy.world is one node in a network of hundreds of Lemmy instances. Before you sign up here, take a moment to explore all the instances at lemmyverse.net. You may find an instance with a regional or topical emphasis that speaks to you! Don’t worry about being left out; Lemmy instances are interconnected so users from each instance can participate with communities on other instances."

For mass adoption it needs to be so simple that even non-techie older people can get through it without feeling like they might be doing something wrong.

I think they should stick to the "email provider" analogy. Whole paragraph should be something like:

The only thing you need to start interacting with the Fediverse is an account with one of the many providers, just like with email! Providers are freely available across the globe: pick one that suits your location or interests best! You can start browsing the content of nearly the entire Fediverse from whatever provider you choose. Don't worry, you can always create an account with a different provider later.

You could add a sentence or two about where to find sensible defaults or link an article that explains the more subtle things.

I think the emphasis on instances (and not naming them the more familiar providers) hinders adoption.

I (Evan) also spoke on stage with Peter Cottle of Threads, Mike Masnick of Techdirt, and David Imel. We had a great conversation about the way the Fediverse is developing in 2025, how the different connected networks are interoperating, and what to look forward to in the coming year.

One compelling part of the Fediverse House experience was the outreach to different communities that can benefit from using social web technologies: marketers, creators, and publishers. I think addressing broader sets of needs can be helpful for spreading the technology. The talks were recorded and will be released online over the coming months.

Thanks to everyone who attended or spoke at Fediverse House; especially to Cory Doctorow, who gave a great talk about enshittification and the social web. And a special thanks to the team at Flipboard, including Mike McCue, Marcie McCue, and Mia Quagliarello for making the whole event happen and for inviting SWF to participate. We look forward to even more Fediverse events at SXSW 2026!

The Social Web Foundation will be at Fediverse House in Austin, TX on March 9 and 10, at the same time as South by Southwest Interactive. This is the first ever Fediverse event at SXSW, and we can’t wait to reach out to new and old fediversians at the event in downtown Austin. We’ll be coordinating two events at the space, and I’ll also be speaking on stage.
I’ll be speaking with David Imel, Peter Cottle and Mike Masnick at 10AM at the “Fediverse Corner” roundtable panel. (RSVP)
We’re organizing a Networking Session and Light Lunch for Fediverse participants and the fedicurious from 11:30AM to 1:30PM on Sunday, March 9. It’s the best place to meet up with Fediverse-involved people during South by. (RSVP)

The state of conversational contexts (February 2025)

A conversational context is what the ForumWG uses to describe what you might see as a reply tree or comment thread. One of the short-to-medium term goals of the ForumWG is to get conversational backfill working reliably.

What this means — conversational backfill means that when you encounter a post/status/note/etc. (e.g. you're mentioned or boosted/shared something), there is a reliable and comprehensive way to retrieve the entire conversation around it, so you are not interacting with the object on its own, but in its proper context with all its sibling replies.

We plan to achieve this with a combination of a top-down (FEP-driven) and bottom-up (implementor-first) approach. While this sounds incongruent, top-down approaches tend to overcomplicate and bottom-up approaches tend to violate the protocol (unintentionally of course :joy:.)

Just wrapped up a call with @pfefferle@mastodon.social and @jesseplusplus@mastodon.social to review their implementations of FEP 7888, specifically in relation to conversational backfill.

:heavy_check_mark: individual objects serve a context property
:heavy_check_mark: that context property is a URL that resolves

One of the concerns raised was related to the OrderedCollection of items served by the context. Specifically, if the items presented in the collection were not in chronological order, NodeBB failed at importing some of the items as the inReplyTo referenced an object that did not exist.

The solution to this was to ensure that the collection items were in chronological order from oldest to newest. Once fixed:

Ich war dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal auf der #FOSDEM, hauptsächlich weil @evan und @andypiper (im Dunstkreis der Social Web Foundation) mehrere Fediverse-(Sub-)Events organisiert haben:
Den Social Web Devroom als Main-Track mit diversen längeren und kürzeren Vorträgen rund um das Thema Fediverse. Besonders spannend fand ich die Beiträge der beiden „Long-Former“-Kollegen @matt und @johnonolan, da die Implementierungen in WriteFreely und Ghost, der von WordPress am nächsten kommen.
Das Social Web BOF („Birds of a Feather“) bot eine Stunde voller kurzer (10-minütiger) Vorträge. Ich hatte mir zwar etwas anderes darunter vorgestellt, aber auch diese Präsentationen waren unterhaltsam und interessant.
Bei den Social Web After Hours im HSBXL Hackerspace hatte ich die Gelegenheit, meinen Vortrag über WordPress zu halten – worüber ich mich natürlich sehr gefreut habe. Aber ehrlich gesagt, hätte es mir auch gereicht, die Zeit mit Gleichgesinnten zu verbringen und ein Bier zu trinken. 😉
Es war überwältigend, so viele Menschen zu treffen, die sich mit dem gleichen Thema beschäftigen. Ich habe nicht oft die Gelegenheit, mit Gleichgesinnten zu fachsimpeln, und habe die kurze Zeit daher umso mehr genossen!
Weil die meisten Fediverse-Events hauptsächlich in den USA stattfinden, konnte ich viele, deren Wirken im Open Web ich schon lange online verfolge, zum ersten Mal persönlich treffen!
Die meiste Zeit hab ich mich gefühlt wie ein kleiner Junge, der das erste Mal mit den großen und coolen Kids spielen darf 😍!

Ich werde mich hüten, hier jetzt Namen aufzuzählen – aus Angst, jemanden zu vergessen.

@jesseplusplus@mastodon.social @pfefferle@mastodon.social I fixed up NodeBB's janky handling of collections and now I am able to import an entire Frequency conversation via its context :tada:

I think @silverpill@mitra.social is right though, your context.first needs an id. I worked around it but it's better to have it so it can be referenced against by another page's prev.

My server can retrieve both kinds of collections :) I had concerns about diverging / conflicting implementations in the past, but the solution was found...

the context SHOULD be copied if you want to participate in the same context, but the owner MAY Add whatever they want to an arbitrary Collection

context-unaware impls aren't prevented from participating but this will lead to a degraded experience if you're not careful. likely you would start with some graph source, filter for context, then optionally crawl replies for anything missing or otherwise optionally reverse query inReplyTo

On the first day I was also convinced that I wouldn't put myself through that again, although the offdem was quite an experience. But Sunday was just great. So many Fedi people in one place, I sat in the restaurant for hours and had great conversations. Thanks to all ! Great time, great people.

It's been more than a week since the last event at #SocialWebFOSDEM, and I'm just now getting to writing up some summary thoughts and follow-on notes. We had three big planned events at FOSDEM, so there is an overwhelming amount to think about, and take-a

It’s been more than a week since the last event at #SocialWebFOSDEM, and I’m just now getting to writing up some summary thoughts and follow-on notes. We had three big planned events at FOSDEM, so there is an overwhelming amount to think about, and take-aways to discuss. The biggest take-away for me was: we needed this. The Social Web developer community came together in person for the first time in a while, and it was remarkably fruitful.

For those who weren’t able to attend in person, or who want to go back and review or share great talks, there are a few options. First, the Social Web Devroom talks were all recorded with audio and video, some of which have begun appearing on the FOSDEM web site; check the specific talks for details. Most of the schedule entries have attached slides in PDF format, also.

The Social Web BOF was not recorded in video, but most of the talks have published slides. Benjamin Bellamy of Castopod also thoughtfully recorded audio for the talks, so I will try to slice them up into listenable chunks, one for each talk. The BOF talks were some of my favourites, so I’m looking forward to getting these released.

Finally, the Social Web After Hours event was not recorded at all, but some of the presenters have released their slides. Julian Lam’s talk, “The Fediverse is Quiet“, was re-recorded for you to view. This event was a great way to end the weekend, with a much more casual and intimate vibe than the lecture rooms at ULB. A fun time.

Lastly, I’ve organized a FOSDEM debrief for speakers at all of the events for this week. If you were at FOSDEM and you’d like to attend, comment here or DM me at @evan .

Social Web After Hours at FOSDEM 2025

The Social Web Foundation and Hackerspace Brussels (HSBXL) are co-hosting an off-site event at FOSDEM 2025 in Brussels, Belgium on Sunday, February 2, 2025 from 19:00 to 21:00 local time. Social Web After Hours will feature four Fediverse-focused presentations from leaders of the ActivityPub community:
Darius Kazemi will discuss the Fediverse Observatory
Julian Lam will discuss NodeBB and using ActivityPub for threaded discussions
Matthias Pfefferle will present the ActivityPub plugin for WordPress
The event is open to the public, but space is limited. HSBXL is at Rue Osseghem 53, 1080 Molenbeek, Brussels, Belgium. Light food and drink available for purchase at the event; proceeds benefit HSBXL.

FOSDEM 2025 – Social Web Devroom – Call For Participation

The Social Web Foundation is pleased to announce the Social Web Devroom at FOSDEM 2025, and invite participants to submit proposals for talks for the event.
FOSDEM is an exciting free and open source software event in Brussels, Belgium that brings together thousands of enthusiasts from around the world. The event spans the weekend of February 1-2, 2025 and features discussion tracks (“devrooms”) for over 140 different technology topics.
The Social Web Devroom will take place in the afternoon of Saturday, February 1.
Format

There will be two available talk formats:
25 minutes – for bigger projects, followed by 5 minutes of questions.
8 minutes – lightning talks on smaller or newer projects, in groups of 3, followed by 6 minutes of combined questions for the group.

Topics

The Social Web Devroom is open to talks all about the Social Web AKA the Fediverse, including:
Implementations of the ActivityPub protocol or ActivityPub API
Clients for ActivityPub-enabled software like Mastodon
Supporting services for the Fediverse, like search or onboarding
ActivityPub-related libraries, toolkits, and frameworks
Tools, bots, platforms, and related topics

Lydic talks about the dizzying changes that are happening in social media these days. Internet users over the last decade have gotten used to a small number of huge social platforms. But political changes, content policy issues, and legal platform shutdowns have upended that formerly stable structure. People can no longer count on their friends, family, colleagues and neighbours all being on the same social networking system, much less news outlets, politicians, and celebrities. So they’re racing around, trying new applications (including, as Lydic notes, the awesome Pixelfed), and seeking a place to be social again.

Why should anyone have to do this? After all, you and I didn’t change our political outlook or our content policies or our legal ownership structure. We have governments and companies changing all around us that interfere with how we can interact with the people that matter most to us. Regardless of how you feel about these changes, why do everyday users have to be the ones to scramble to adapt?

The Fediverse is based on the simple belief that your social connections and your published content are yours. They belong to you. You should get to decide where to set up your home on the social web, based on your own priorities — technical, political, financial, romantic, whatever. And once you have that place on the social web, you can connect to anybody else, on any Fediverse platform, as easily as if they were on your own.

So when your friends are all trying a new Fediverse-enabled app from the app store, you can follow them from your own Fediverse home, see what they’re posting, like, comment, and share. You don’t have to scramble to install yet another application, go through the complicated signup flow, set up your profile, and alert everyone you know about yet another identity you have. You can stay put, keep all your current connections, but still stay connected to your restless friends and bleeding-edge influencers.

And if you get tired of the place you’ve set up your Fediverse home, you can move completely — taking all your social connections (and, soon, all your content) to the new platform you’ve chosen. You won’t have to make a series of announcements, like Lydic does, about all the different places your Internet presence is scattered. It’s handled automatically by the Fediverse platforms. Your followers, family and friends might not even notice the difference.

Social media is fun; we get it. And there’s nothing wrong with trying new apps. Being a pioneer on the cool new platform is invigorating. But if it’s not fun, and you’re feeling the whiplash of multiple platforms rising and falling weekly, please consider setting up your long-term homebase on a Fediverse-enabled platform. You might be surprised how many platforms are already Fediverse-enabled, and more are coming online every day.

Content Policy on the Social Web

On Monday, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced a new content policy for Meta on Threads. We are disappointed in these changes, which put vulnerable people on and off Meta platforms in harm’s way for harassment. Ideas matter, and history shows that online misinformation and harassment can lead to violence in the real world. There are good analyses of the details of the policy changes at EFF, The Verge, and Platformer.
Meta is one of many ActivityPub implementers and a supporter of the Social Web Foundation. We strongly encourage Meta’s executive and content teams to come back in line with best practices of a zero harm social media ecosystem. Reconsidering this policy change would preserve the crucial distinction between political differences of opinion and dehumanizing harassment. The SWF is available to discuss Meta’s content moderation policies and processes to make them more humane and responsible.
Distributed Moderation

What do these changes mean for the Fediverse? Through ActivityPub, Meta’s Threads network is connected to the social web, also called the Fediverse. This is a diverse network of independent social services using different codebases and different kinds of content. The network of 300M users of Threads can follow and be followed by people in tens of thousands of other communities. These services are operated by a variety of entities: corporations, universities, enterprise IT, cooperatives, non-profit organizations, and self-organized volunteers.
Theoretically, this distributed structure allows people to make choices about which platforms they want to use – based not only on technical features, but also on community composition and moderation policies. Users don’t need to give up on social connections they already have with friends and family; they can stay connected across services using ActivityPub. Different communities and services can have different content policies, but people in different communities can still stay connected.
Ideally, having an account on a Fediverse service gives people the best of both worlds: they can stay connected to users and content they like, and filter out content and users that they don’t. When unwanted content from one community lands in the feeds of people in other communities, the receiving users or their moderators can react under their own local policy: removing individual text or image posts; blocking individual users; or blocking the entire sending community.
Practically, though, there are limitations to this flexibility. Filtering on the receiving side requires orders of magnitude more effort. If a single sending service delivers bad content to users on one hundred or one thousand receiving services, each moderator on the receiving end has to clean up the mess locally. Moderators get understandably frustrated with this kind of displacement of responsibility. A common response is to block servers that send bad content entirely.
In the case of Threads, though, there are complicating factors. Threads is much, much bigger than the typical Fediverse community, and it has many high-profile users in politics, media and technology. It’s also an easy onboarding service to the Fediverse for people who are used to Facebook or Instagram, meaning many of our friends, colleagues and family use it. Blocking the Threads service means blocking access for all users on the receiving service from all these important accounts.
Unfortunately, there’s not an easy answer for Fediverse moderators. We encourage trust and safety teams across the social web to use their best judgement and the tools available to keep users safe, connected, and informed, and also to minimize moderators’ stress and burnout. IFTAS Connect is a great community resource for connecting with other moderators to discuss these tradeoffs.
Improving Social Web Resilience

We see the challenge of a large service that has poor local content policy as a chance to strengthen the social and technical infrastructure of the Fediverse. None of these options will resolve current problems immediately, but we hope starting the research now will make the Fediverse more resilient in the future.
Finer-grained filtering tools. As mentioned above, moderators on the Fediverse can automatically filter content by author or by originating service. Some platforms also let moderators filter by keywords – for example, blocking out racist or homophobic slurs. More difficult forms of filtering, such as detecting unacceptable images, or the subtle meaning of text, requires more sophisticated algorithmic filtering not supported by many Fediverse platforms. Balancing the ease of use of this kind of filter with the desire from many communities to have final control by human moderators is a good area for future research.
Collaborative moderation tools. Email filtering systems re-use signals received from other users, so that if a message is marked as spam by one user, or a few users, other users will never see the message. This can balance the desire for human moderation with a significantly lowered total effort for moderators. Shared server blocklists are somewhat common on the Fediverse, but deeper per-user and per-post collaborative filtering is not. Balancing, once again, the specific priorities of a given community with the advantage of collaborative filtering would also require further research.
Fact-checking and community notes. One major part of the Meta announcement was a cancellation of the fact-checking program for posts on Meta, and its replacement with a community notes feature, which defers fact-checking to volunteers. Neither of these features (professional and volunteer fact-checking) are supported directly in ActivityPub. We think there’s a place for a variety of fact-checking services on the Fediverse, providing annotations on Fediverse content without requiring permissions from the author, the sending service, or even the receiving service. Building the protocol features and reference implementations, as well as encouraging the participation of fact-checking services, is a good next step in this area.
Jurisdictional boundaries. Zuckerberg mentions in his update that Meta will be collaborating with the US government to resist demands for content policy changes by other governments. Regardless of the valence of these content policy demands, this question highlights an important feature of the Fediverse, namely, that federated services can operate within specific jurisdictions and conform with their regulations. Content that is conveyed across legal boundaries between services can be more clearly filtered or blocked to comply with local rules. We encourage national and regional governments to further investigate this structure for social networking and global connectivity.
Data portability. Choosing a social media platform to use is an important freedom in the social web. The Fediverse supports limited data portability, such that users can move their followers and followed accounts to a new server almost seamlessly. However, this move leaves all posted content, like text and images, on the old server, as well as metadata such as likes and shares. The new LOLA protocol would allow a full move between servers. We want to see more work on implementing LOLA in Fediverse platforms.
Ultimately, the safety and well-being of people around the world should not be in the hands of any single company. Moderation policies are a competitive advantage in an open social network. We continue to encourage the use of ActivityPub, and the distributed control that it brings.

I find it hilarious that the comment replies on this forbes.com article, are way farther left and more aware of the US's hypocrisies than the average liberal lemmy server commenters.

The article was also just the standard orientalist "our open transparent freedom-loving democracy" vs "their authoritarian 1984 surveillance regime", with an emphasis on "protecting our youths from the evil commies". Not a shred of self reflection after the US just committed the thing they're accusing China of doing.

Similar to git master and whitelist/blacklist having addressed racist origins, I've just learned that "ricing" -- i.e. way-far-from-default, colorfully souped-up *nix customizations -- came from a derogatory word for Asian "riced out" cars.

Je ne pense pas que les gens naissent égocentriques. Je pense que le système capitaliste encourage les gens à le devenir. Le système récompense ceux qui accumulent des richesses, qui ne pensent qu'à eux, qui ne partagent pas. À l'opposé, ceux qui partagent ne gagneront jamais au jeu du capitalisme.

Les gens qu'on trouve "égocentriques" parce qu'ils utilisent leur voiture, souvent, c'est parce qu'il n'y a pas d'autres choix viable. Si la voiture est le transport le plus rapide et pratique pour eux parce que le transport en commun prend 3 fois plus de temps, c'est normal qu'ils prennent le choix "égocentrique". Today’s public square is on private property. To fight inequality, participate in democracy, and build an equitable society and economy, we must build a true public commons beyond one or two corporate-owned, profit-driven spaces. With the open social web,

With the open social web, the production, distribution and use of online content is being freed from the silos erected by today’s largest multinationals. But our data is still captured in AI systems that have “reached scale”– essentially the search, recommendation, and moderation algorithms that manipulate content consumption. These are monopoly technologies by their very design.

The detrimental consequences to society of this status quo are diverse and well-documented: concentration of profits and power, degraded information and media landscapes, prominence of polarizing content, disinformation and online harassment, degraded mental health, and more.

There is a broad vision for something different. We do not have to settle for how corporate spaces choose to govern, or not govern, themselves. The promise of an open social web is that we can all join communities and that online communities can be interconnected.

The Social Web Foundation focuses on the network of platforms connected via ActivityPub. We also support efforts to make other distributed social networking protocols more open and equitable. For this reason, we are excited to support the #FreeOurFeeds campaign launching today. This campaign is an opportunity to develop the capacity needed for the open social web protocols– ActivityPub along with Bluesky’s AT Protocol– to better interoperate, leveraging the entire open social ecosystem to create a working demonstration of algorithmic pluralism at scale.

We look forward to contributing to the essential work that follows from the campaign #FreeOurFeeds: Infrastructure, Innovation Ecosystem, and Governance.

Operating open and independent infrastructure services for social applications are essential but costly. Some proposed outcomes of #FreeOurFeeds are:

Independent implementations of relays, bridges and native protocol interoperability
Standardizing and testing intermediary functions like user authentication services
Personalising and streamlining data transfer and backups across all services.

The #FreeOurFeeds seed funds can support an innovation ecosystem of public-interest alternatives. Just imagine the impact of third-party recommendations and moderation systems, LLM diversity, and curation, news and information discovery.

Open social web innovation in global governance spaces supports diverse, online communities. Protocols need to remain capture-resistant and supportive of open innovation and interoperability across the open social web and an industry-wide transition to interoperable protocols and public interest digital infrastructure is needed.

#FreeOurFeeds is a public crowdfunder to realize this vision with material support, but it is also an opportunity to create a powerful public narrative, bring experts together and plot a strategy around the need for investing in algorithmic pluralism and digital public infrastructures. Ideally, having an account on a Fediverse service gives people the best of both worlds: they can stay connected to users and content they like, and filter out content and users that they don’t. When unwanted content from one community lands in the feeds of people in other communities, the receiving users or their moderators can react under their own local policy: removing individual text or image posts; blocking individual users; or blocking the entire sending community.

Practically, though, there are limitations to this flexibility. Filtering on the receiving side requires orders of magnitude more effort. If a single sending service delivers bad content to users on one hundred or one thousand receiving services, each moderator on the receiving end has to clean up the mess locally. Moderators get understandably frustrated with this kind of displacement of responsibility. A common response is to block servers that send bad content entirely.

In the case of Threads, though, there are complicating factors. Threads is much, much bigger than the typical Fediverse community, and it has many high-profile users in politics, media and technology. It’s also an easy onboarding service to the Fediverse for people who are used to Facebook or Instagram, meaning many of our friends, colleagues and family use it. Blocking the Threads service means blocking access for all users on the receiving service from all these important accounts.

Unfortunately, there’s not an easy answer for Fediverse moderators. We encourage trust and safety teams across the social web to use their best judgement and the tools available to keep users safe, connected, and informed, and also to minimize moderators’ stress and burnout. IFTAS Connect is a great community resource for connecting with other moderators to discuss these tradeoffs.

Improving Social Web Resilience

We see the challenge of a large service that has poor local content policy as a chance to strengthen the social and technical infrastructure of the Fediverse. None of these options will resolve current problems immediately, but we hope starting the research now will make the Fediverse more resilient in the future.

Finer-grained filtering tools. As mentioned above, moderators on the Fediverse can automatically filter content by author or by originating service. Some platforms also let moderators filter by keywords – for example, blocking out racist or homophobic slurs. More difficult forms of filtering, such as detecting unacceptable images, or the subtle meaning of text, requires more sophisticated algorithmic filtering not supported by many Fediverse platforms. Balancing the ease of use of this kind of filter with the desire from many communities to have final control by human moderators is a good area for future research.
Collaborative moderation tools. Email filtering systems re-use signals received from other users, so that if a message is marked as spam by one user, or a few users, other users will never see the message. This can balance the desire for human moderation with a significantly lowered total effort for moderators. Shared server blocklists are somewhat common on the Fediverse, but deeper per-user and per-post collaborative filtering is not. Balancing, once again, the specific priorities of a given community with the advantage of collaborative filtering would also require further research.
Fact-checking and community notes. One major part of the Meta announcement was a cancellation of the fact-checking program for posts on Meta, and its replacement with a community notes feature, which defers fact-checking to volunteers. Neither of these features (professional and volunteer fact-checking) are supported directly in ActivityPub. We think there’s a place for a variety of fact-checking services on the Fediverse, providing annotations on Fediverse content without requiring permissions from the author, the sending service, or even the receiving service. Building the protocol features and reference implementations, as well as encouraging the participation of fact-checking services, is a good next step in this area.
Jurisdictional boundaries. Zuckerberg mentions in his update that Meta will be collaborating with the US government to resist demands for content policy changes by other governments. Regardless of the valence of these content policy demands, this question highlights an important feature of the Fediverse, namely, that federated services can operate within specific jurisdictions and conform with their regulations. Content that is conveyed across legal boundaries between services can be more clearly filtered or blocked to comply with local rules. We encourage national and regional governments to further investigate this structure for social networking and global connectivity.
Data portability. Choosing a social media platform to use is an important freedom in the social web. The Fediverse supports limited data portability, such that users can move their followers and followed accounts to a new server almost seamlessly. However, this move leaves all posted content, like text and images, on the old server, as well as metadata such as likes and shares. The new LOLA protocol would allow a full move between servers. We want to see more work on implementing LOLA in Fediverse platforms.

Ultimately, the safety and well-being of people around the world should not be in the hands of any single company. Moderation policies are a competitive advantage in an open social network. We continue to encourage the use of ActivityPub, and the distributed control that it brings.

What is Friendica

Friendica is a decentralised communications platform, you can use to host your own social media server that integrates with independent social networking platforms (like the Fediverse or Diaspora*) but also some commercial ones like Tumblr and BlueSky.

How to Update

Updating from old Friendica versions

If you are updating from an older version than the 2023.12 release, please first update your Friendica instance to that version as it contained some breaking changes.

Pre-Update Procedures

Ensure that the last backup of your Friendica installation was done recently.

Using Git

Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository, regardless of the branch (stable or develop) you are using. Remember to update the dependencies with composer as well. So, assuming that you are on the stable branch, the commands to update your installation to the 2024.12 release would be
cd friendicagit pullbin/composer.phar install --no-devcd addongit pull
If you want to use a different branch than the stable one, you need to fetch and checkout the branch before your perform the git pull.

Pulling in the dependencies with composer will show some deprecation warning, we will be working on that in the upcoming release.

Using the Archive Files

Due to unforseen changes in the CI not possible at the moment.

Post Update Tasks

The database update should be applied automatically, but sometimes it gets stuck. If you encounter this, please initiate the DB update manually from the command line by running the script
bin/console dbstructure update
from the base of your Friendica installation. If the output contains any error message, please let us know using the channels mentioned below.

Please note, that some of the changes to the database structure will take some time to be applied, depending on the size of your Friendica database this update might run for days.

Known Issues

At the time of writing this, none with 2024.12

But the development branch is currently rather unstable and should be used with caution as the development diverged far (for Friendica terms) from the now stable branch. We will let our very valued ALPHA testers when the dev team things that the development branch is stable enough again.

How to Contribute

If you want to contribute to the project, you don’t need to have coding experience. There are a number of tasks listed in the issue tracker with the label “Junior Jobs” we think are good for new contributors. But you are by no means limited to these – if you find a solution to a problem (even a new one) please make a pull request at github or let us know in the development forum.

Contribution to Friendica is also not limited to coding. Any contribution to the documentation, the translation or advertisement materials is welcome or reporting a problem. You don’t need to deal with Git(Hub) or Transifex if you don’t like to. Just get in touch with us and we will get the materials to the appropriate places.

Digg è infatti un sito aggregatore di notizie americano fondato originariamente da Jay Adelson e Kevin Rose nel 2004 che permetteva agli utenti di inviare e votare articoli di notizie e altri contenuti web. Digg ha guadagnato rapidamente popolarità grazie al suo modello di cura dei contenuti orientato agli utenti, in cui la comunità ha determinato quali storie erano in primo piano sulla piattaforma. Nel 2008, Digg era uno dei principali attori nei social media e nello spazio di aggregazione di notizie.

Kevin Rose lancio’ Digg nel dicembre del 2004. Il servizio Internet ha riscontrato un successo immediato e per lungo tempo tutti i big-tech hanno preso in considerazione un’eventuale operazione di acquisto dell’azienda. Un accordo non e’ mai stato cosi’ vicino come a meta’ 2008, quando Google ha portato Digg all’altare prima di andarsene all’ultimo momento.

Digg sarebbe stato venduto per circa $200 milioni. Ogni singolo dipendente era a conoscenza dell’accordo, perche’ Google li aveva intervistati tutti uno per uno. Fu il merito dell’allora CEO Jay Adelson se Digg e’ riuscita a far tornare tutti in pista dopo che l’affare e’ sfumato.

Dopo aver goduto di anni di dominio tra il 2006 e il 2010, con un pubblico di 3,8 milioni di visitatori unici mensili negli Stati Uniti e il suo modello di voto aver ispirato la creazione di siti simili come Reddit ha dovuto affrontare critiche quando ha implementato un'importante riprogettazione del sito nel 2010 (denominata "Digg v4"). La riprogettazione ha introdotto la promozione dei contenuti basata su algoritmi, che ha ridotto il ruolo del voto degli utenti a favore dei consigli automatizzati. Questo cambiamento ha sconvolto molti utenti di lunga data, portando a un contraccolpo significativo e alla migrazione su altre piattaforme. L'esodo degli utenti è stato un punto di svolta importante per Digg.

Betaworks ha rilanciato Digg con una nuova attenzione alle notizie curate e all'aggregazione di contenuti. Anche se il nuovo Digg ha guadagnato terreno, non è riuscito a riconquistare la sua gloria precedente. Nonostante gli sforzi per adattarsi e innovare, Digg ha lottato per riconquistare la sua posizione un tempo dominante.

Non ci sono ancora dettagli sulle modifiche che verranno apportate alla piattaforma, ma i fan di Digg sono ansiosi di vedere cosa ha in serbo il suo fondatore per la rinascita della piattaforma.

A Seismic Warning for the Tongan Eruption

In mid-January 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (HTHH) volcano had one of the most massive eruptions ever recorded, destroying an island, generating a tsunami, and blanketing Tonga in ash. Volcanologists are accustomed to monitoring nearby seismic equipment for signs of an imminent eruption, but researchers found that the HTHH eruption generated a surface-level seismic wave picked up by detectors 750 kilometers away about 15 minutes before the eruption began. They propose that the seismic wave occurred when the oceanic crust beneath the caldera fractured. Lutris will also let you install a game from a GoG offline installer using the install script from GoG (using the script means that if there are dependencies like the game needing a specific DirectX version it gets automatically configured in Wine).

Also if I understand correctly the article, going via Bottles means you have a single Wine "instance" (i.e. a wine prefix) for all your GoG games - as GoG access in managed via GoG Galaxy which is a Windows program - whilst Lutris by default gives you one wine prefix per game, so it's a bit better isolated and you can chose different Wine versions for different games (for those games were latest is not bestest).

Last but not least, if you want further isolation from your system in Lutris there is a "command prefix" option (under runtime options if I remember it correctly) where you can put the prefix for the command that runs wine with your game, which let's you run things like firejail which sandbox the whole Wine instance and whatever game it's being used to run (in my system I have it as default, configured to deny thing

Can be nice for the different versions of games out there, not just gog.

Bottles is cool because it really focuses on you having complete control is wine.

Heroic is great because you can log into gog through it and install the games. Somewhat like Steam. Just noticed you can have Heroic link installed games to Steam

This sounds like a written confession or statement to the police, after he's already in police custody. Not a "manifesto", which is something justifying your actions to the public and done before carrying out whatever it is.

I'm not buying any of this. Someone who went to so much trouble planning, executing, and getting away without a trace, isn't going to go out in public with a bunch of incriminating items on their person. The NYPD probably just picked this tip out of the thousands they got, and are making things fit after the fact.

There does seem to be inconsistency between the shooter meticulously planning things out and then this guy conveniently popping up at a McDonalds with all the gear and confessing. Seems like the first thing you'd do would be to ditch the gun and the silencer. If the gun was 3d printed, he could've literally just melted it down. On the flip side, if he wanted to get caught then he didn't have to do all this complex planning and could've just stayed at the scene and surrendered.

Yep, the cops and US news are trying to get everyone to ignore all these glaring inconstencies.

They fucked up, let the guy slip through their fingers, and now are trying to do damage control.

I really find it to be quite absurd that people are still thinking this isn't the guy. This is probably the guy. My basis for that is basically just that the shooter had a 200 dollar peak design redditor backpack and a uniqlo packable jacket when he shot that guy, and those are both heavily techbro-coded fashion items. That's on top of all the internet history of this specific guy pretty much indicating that he's the guy. Back problems, leading to a several month long disappearance, after he turns 26, and is no longer on his parent's healthcare plan.

We can also look at it through the lens of just the assassination attempt itself. The news is saying they found either a 3d printed gun, or more commonly, a ghost gun (which I have not been able to find a consistent account of). In either case, that involves buying a mostly unregulated firearm upper, and then either finishing an "80%" pre-assembled lower with a drill press, or probably even a regular cordless drill, or just wholesale printing the entire lower of the gun yourself. Both of those, are also techbro-coded methods of obtaining a firearm. Compared to just buying a somewhat common firearm in a state where it's pretty easy to get a gun a couple months before, and then shaving the serial numbers off the gun, or just getting a gun off the black market, or stealing one from someone, which all seem maybe easier than going the ghost gun route.

In the video itself, we see him struggle to cycle the gun manually, due what is probably a combination of using subsonic ammunition, and his suppressor, which I'm assuming did not have a nielsen device, or, a booster. Those are devices that are meant to help browning-style tilting barrel designs cycle much more reliably. They also tend to cycle less reliably with heavier baffled suppressors compared to much lighter, quieter, disposable, and easier to produce wipe-based suppressors.

His research and meticulously planned operation also consisted of shooting this guy in the back, in front of a camera, while this guy walked to his hotel. That's a plan that has a high percentage chance of success, it's the same way that you'd see many mob hits happen, but does it strike me as something which is particularly complicated or out of character for this guy, if he had a couple months to cook something up?

Based on the entire description of that chain of events, that would probably indicate that this is a somebody that's had some amount of preparation but wasn't some kind of professional or overwhelming genius. It could be the case that they dug around online for thirty minutes, happened to find a guy that had both disappeared for a couple months, had medical problems, was a little bit more conspiratorial, or rather, had incoherent politics, and would be the kind of guy who would dress in a peak design backpack and in a uniqlo jacket, and was ALSO a guy which was exiting new york at that time via bus. They would then have to plant evidence on him, which cops are known to do, but that's all, legitimately, entirely possible. Is it more likely than this being the guy, based on everything we've seen from the video?

I would say no, probably not, this is probably the guy.

The number of black-haired white guys who wear this clothing, are interested in tech, had health problems, and have been screwed over by insurance companies isn't a small number. There's probably thousands of them in any given US city.

You are doing the thing where the media is all pointing at a single person, and trying to convict them based on non-material-evidence factors: clothing, blurry pictures, ideology, "motivation", etc. None of those things link this person to the crime scene. If they showed you all the other tips and candidates they've gotten in the past week that fit the bill, I doubt you'd be so sure.

A Magnetic Tsunami Warning

Tsunamis are devastating natural disasters that can strike with little to no warning for coastlines. Often the first sign of major tsunami is a drop in the sea level as water flows out to join the incoming wave. But researchers have now shown that magnetic fields can signal a coming wave, too. Because seawater is electrically conductive, its movement affects local magnetic fields, and a tsunami’s signal is large enough to be discernible. One study found that the magnetic field level changes are detectable a full minute before visible changes in the sea level.
