Mercoledì (20 novembre) mattina dovrei riuscire a fare l'aggiornamento a Lemmy 0.19.7, stamattina l'ho fatto sul server di test e sembra funzionare tutto bene.

Ci metterà un po' perché c'è anche un aggiornamento del database e delle tabelle per cui dicevano che potrebbe servire anche mezz'ora se ci sono molti post.

The FAQ of Communism, written by the Luigi of the Marx & Engels duo. Quick to read, and easy to reference, this is the perfect start to your journey.

1. Michael Parenti's Blackshirts and Reds | Audiobook

Breaks down fascism and its mortal enemy, Communism, as well as their antagonistic relationship. Understanding what fascism is, where and when it rises, why it does so, and how to banish it forever is critical. Parenti also helps debunk common anti-Communist myths, from both the "left" and the right, in a quick-witted writing style. Section II: Historical and Dialectical Materialism

Ugh, philosophy? Really? YES!

1. Georges Politzer's Elementary Principles of Philosophy | Audiobook

By far my favorite primer on Marxist philosophy. By understanding Dialectical and Historical Materialism first, you make it easier to understand the rest of Marxism-Leninism. Don't be intimidated!

1. Friedrich Engels' Socialism: Utopian and Scientific | Audiobook

Further reading on Dialectical and Historical Materialism, but crucially introduces the why of Scientific Socialism, explaining how Capitalism itself prepares the conditions for public ownership and planning by centralizing itself into monopolist syndicates. This is also where Engels talks about the failures of previous "Utopian" Socialists.

Section III: Political Economy

That's right, it's time for the Law of Value and a deep-dive into Imperialism. If we are to defeat Capitalism, we must learn it's mechanisms, tendencies, contradictions, and laws.

1. Karl Marx's Wage Labor and Capital | Audiobook as well as Wages, Price and Profit | Audiobook

Best taken as a pair, these essays simplify the most important parts of the Law of Value. Marx is targetting those not trained in economics here, but you might want to keep a pen and some paper to follow along if you are a visual person.

1. Vladimir Lenin's Imperialism, The Highest Stage of Capitalism | Audiobook

Absolutely crucial and the most important work for understanding the modern era and its primary contradictions. Marxist-Leninists understand that Imperialism is the greatest contradiction in the modern era, which cascades downward into all manner of related contradictions. Knowing what dying Capitalism looks like, and how it behaves, means we can kill it.

Section IV: Revolutionary and Scientific Socialism

Can we defeat Capitalism at the ballot box? What about just defeating fascism? What about the role of the state?

1. Rosa Luxemburg's Reform or Revolution | Audiobook

If Marxists believed reforming Capitalist society was possible, we would be the first in line for it. Sadly, it isn't possible, which Luxemburg proves in this monumental writing.

1. Vladimir Lenin's The State and Revolution | Audiobook

Excellent refutation of revisionists and Social Democrats who think the State can be reformed, without needing to be replaced with one that is run by the workers, in their own interests.

Section V: Intersectionality and Solidarity

The revolution will not be fought by atomized individuals, but by an intersectional, international working class movement. Intersectionality is critical, because it allows different marginalized groups to work together in collective interest, unifying into a broad movement.

1. Vikky Storm and Eme Flores' The Gender Accelerationist Manifesto | (No Audiobook yet)

Critical reading on understanding misogyny, transphobia, enbyphobia, pluralphobia, and homophobia, as well as how to move beyond the base subject of "gender." Uses the foundations built up in the previous works to analyze gender theory from a Historical Materialist perspective.

1. Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth | Audiobook

De-colonialism is essential to Marxism. Without having a strong, de-colonial, internationalist stance, we have no path to victory nor a path to justice. Fanon analyzes Colonialism's dehumanizing effects, and lays out how to form a de-colonial movement, as well as its necessity.

1. Leslie Feinberg's Lavender & Red | Audiobook

Solidarity and intersectionality are the key to any social movement. When different social groups fight for liberation together along intersectional lines, the movements are emboldened and empowered ever-further.

Section VI: Putting it into Practice!

It's not enough to endlessly read, you must put theory to practice. That is how you can improve yourself and the movements you support. Touch grass!

1. Mao Tse-Tung's On Practice and On Contradiction | Audiobook

Mao wrote simply and directly, targeting peasant soldiers during the Revolutionary War in China. This pair of essays equip the reader with the ability to apply the analytical tools of Dialectical Materialism to their every day practice, and better understand problems.

Congratulations, you completed your introductory reading course!

With your new understanding and knowledge of Marxism-Leninism, here is a mini What is to be Done? of your own to follow, and take with you as practical advice.

1. Get organized. Join a Leftist org, find solidarity with fellow comrades, and protect each other. The Dems will not save you, it is up to us to protect ourselves. The Party for Socialism and Liberation and Freedom Road Socialist Organization both organize year round, every year, because the battle for progress is a constant struggle, not a single election. See if there is a chapter near you, or start one! Or, see if there's an org you like more near you and join it.
2. Read theory. Don't think that you are done now! Just because you have the basics, doesn't mean you know more than you do. If you have not investigated a subject, don't speak on it! Don't speak nonsense, but listen!
3. Aggressively combat white supremacy, misogyny, queerphobia, and other attacks on marginalized communities. Cede no ground, let nobody be forgotten or left behind. There is strength in numbers, when one marginalized group is targeted, many more are sure to follow.
4. Be industrious, and self-sufficient. Take up gardening, home repair, tinkering. It is through practice that you elevate your problem-solving capabilities. Not only will you improve your skill at one subject, but your general problem-solving muscles get strengthened as well.
5. Learn self-defense. Get armed, if practical. Be ready to protect yourself and others. Liberals will not save us, we must save each other.
6. Be persistent. If you feel like a single water droplet against a mountain, think of canyons and valleys. Oh, how our efforts pile up! With consistency, every rock, boulder, even mountain, can be drilled through with nothing but steady and persistent water droplets.

One of the Social Web Foundation’s programs for this year is to work on making long-form text more useful and available on the Social Web. By this, we mean multi-paragraph texts of “web page” length, like a blog post, a magazine article, a newsletter, a forum post, or a wiki page. This length of text can usually fit comfortably into a single ActivityPub object — let’s say tens or maybe low hundreds of kilobytes of content. Longer texts like books are probably too big for this use.

There are a lot of producers of long-form text on the Web, and many have enabled ActivityPub for their software. There is some discussion of longer texts in the Activity Vocabulary — the definition of most of the data types used in ActivityPub — but it’s not all in one place, and there’s not practical guidance on restrictions.

To help publishers and consumers of long-form text objects, I pulled together the relevant properties and types into a Fediverse Enhancement Proposal (FEP), which is a community-led standardization process. The document, FEP-b2b8: Long-form Text, is currently available as a draft for review.

If you’re a publisher of long-form text, or you are developing user interfaces that may encounter this kind of data, please take some time to review. This is still a draft-level document, but I’d love to see it shaped and improved by incorporating the experience and knowledge of many practitioners and implementers.

Bitwarden isn't going proprietary after all. The company has changed its license terms once again – but this time, it has switched the license of its software development kit from its own homegrown one to version three of the GPL instead.

The move comes just weeks after we reported that it wasn't strictly FOSS any more. At the time, the company claimed that this was just a mistake in how it packaged up its software, saying on Twitter:

It seems like a packaging bug was misunderstood as something more, and the team plans to resolve it. Bitwarden remains committed to the open source licensing model in place for years, along with retaining a fully featured free version for individual users.

Now it's followed through on this. A GitHub commit entitled "Improve licensing language" changes the licensing on the company's SDK from its own license to the unmodified GPL3.

Previously, if you removed the internal SDK, it was no longer possible to build the publicly available source code without errors. Now the publicly available SDK is GPL3 and you can get and build the whole thing.

Sempre più spesso, l'informazione generalista ci mostra quanto la cybersicurezza sia ormai un tema all'ordine del giorno. Lo dicevo già in tempi non sospetti su questo canale, ma ora sta diventando evidente per tutti: la cybersicurezza è importante, ma non solo!

Solo negli ultimi due mesi ci sono stati scandali per intrusioni nei dati sensibili dei cittadini per colpa di dipendenti troppo curiosi. Da una parte, abbiamo Equalize, una società di business intelligence coinvolta in pratiche decisamente poco legali, con accessi abusivi a sistemi di pubblica utilità a vari livelli, comprese aree riservate solo alle forze dell'ordine. Dall’altra parte, c’è Intesa San Paolo, dove un dipendente si è improvvisato investigatore, frugando nei dati bancari di più di 3.500 clienti.

Ora forse è arrivato il momento di mostrare anche con i media generalisti il tema della cybersicurezza. Infatti, il ministro Nordio ha deciso di agire, stanziando 715 milioni di euro per rafforzare la cybersicurezza della pubblica amministrazione. L’idea sembra essere quella di potenziare le difese con qualche progettino e qualche lezione di consapevolezza sulle minacce cyber, per farci sentire tutti più sicuri.

Bello, no? Sì, bello, ma in realtà qui, come sempre, ci concentriamo sulla tecnologia. Perché sia Equalize sia Intesa San Paolo dimostrano un problema comune: l'elemento umano. Anche il sistema più sicuro può essere compromesso dall’elemento umano: basta una persona con accessi privilegiati o poca etica per mettere a rischio l’intera sicurezza. È l’uso consapevole e responsabile, più della tecnologia perfetta, a garantire la protezione, perché una cattiva condotta umana compromette inevitabilmente la sicurezza di qualsiasi sistema.
Tutti i sistemi informativi di infrastrutture critiche hanno meccanismi di tracciamento per monitorare chi accede o gestisce i dati, di solito al fine diagnostico. Ma, senza sistemi di allerta attivi, i problemi si manifestano solo una volta compiuto il danno. Il rischio principale non è un hacker sconosciuto, ma il dipendente con accessi privilegiati e scarsa etica, che può sfruttare il sistema in modo scorretto.

È difficile capire che molti problemi di sicurezza sono legati al fattore umano, non alla tecnologia. Tant’è che continuiamo a rifugiarci nelle soluzioni facili. E la soluzione facile, nel 2024, si chiama "tecnologia"! Si pensa che un algoritmo o un’app possano risolvere ogni errore umano e problema sociale. Ma è un approccio irrealistico e semplicistico, come credere che basti lo SPID per impedire l’accesso dei minorenni ai siti porno o un sistema per bloccare i siti pirata, o anche un software per eliminare l’evasione fiscale. Avere una soluzione nata per semplificare questioni complesse di base non può aderire al contesto sociale, non riesce ad arginare le disuguaglianze… le implicazioni etiche non sono piccole! Viviamo in un mondo super digitalizzato, dove tutto sembra più facile grazie alla tecnologia; ma in realtà i problemi sociali sono molto più intricati di un semplice codice, e capisco sia facile lasciarsi sedurre dalla tecnologia come strumento, ma si finisce per eludere le responsabilità umane. È solo un senso di tranquillità, ma mette in secondo piano il ruolo fondamentale delle persone.

Ma non dobbiamo diventare solo osservatori passivi delle decisioni prese dagli algoritmi, se no finiamo per percepire la tecnologia come un oracolo infallibile. Immagina di avere un'app che decide tutto per te, dalle canzoni che ascolti ai film che guardi. È facile lasciarsi andare e pensare che quello che dice l'algoritmo sia sempre giusto. E questo mondo incoraggia tutto questo; perché ci stiamo abituando a lasciare che siano gli algoritmi a decidere per noi. Questo significa che non ci prendiamo più la responsabilità delle nostre scelte: per mancanza di voglia? Boh ma la scusa diventa "Ah, è colpa dell'algoritmo se ho scelto quel film brutto!"
Avete saputo di quei parlamentari italiani le cui e-mail istituzionali sono finite nel dark web? Hanno usato gli indirizzi ufficiali per scopi personali, esponendo le informazioni agli hacker.
Un altro esempio è il leak subito da Game Freak, la casa madre di Pokémon, che ha rivelato dettagli su giochi non annunciati e dati sensibili a causa di password deboli nei loro sistemi. Questo dimostra una mancanza di attenzione alla sicurezza informatica in un'azienda che, in teoria, dovrebbe possedere competenze solide in materia di cybersicurezza.

Capisco che ormai ogni soluzione tecnologica sembri automaticamente la migliore, proprio perché tecnologica, ma il punto chiave è che le macchine non possono sostituire il nostro modo di pensare critico e consapevole. Dobbiamo essere attenti e riconoscere i limiti della tecnologia. Se non lo facciamo, rischiamo di usare un’infrastruttura in modo improprio perché ci sembra in realtà sensata.

The Social Web Foundation is pleased to announce the Social Web Devroom at FOSDEM 2025, and invite participants to submit proposals for talks for the event.

FOSDEM is an exciting free and open source software event in Brussels, Belgium that brings together thousands of enthusiasts from around the world. The event spans the weekend of February 1-2, 2025 and features discussion tracks (“devrooms”) for over 140 different technology topics.

The Social Web Devroom will take place in the afternoon of Saturday, February 1.

Format

There will be two available talk formats:

• 25 minutes – for bigger projects, followed by 5 minutes of questions.
• 8 minutes – lightning talks on smaller or newer projects, in groups of 3, followed by 6 minutes of combined questions for the group.

The Social Web Devroom is open to talks all about the Social Web AKA the Fediverse, including:

• Implementations of the ActivityPub protocol or ActivityPub API
• Clients for ActivityPub-enabled software like Mastodon
• Supporting services for the Fediverse, like search or onboarding
