Julian proposed consolidating various FEPs (7888, 400e, 171b) to publish a unified recommendation.
Evan (@evan@cosocial.ca) objected to the use of the "context" property in FEP 7888, advocating for a new vocabulary instead.
The discussion included differing views on the utility of the context property and its historical usage.
Darius utilized his data observatory (TBD) data set to hopefully prove that context is not a properly currently seeing any usage.

How does the “thread” property differ from the “context” property which basically every implementer is already using and has been doing so for 6+ years?
That doesn’t really cover the why other than “context is vaguely defined” (maybe, but its’ been used in this exact way for… 7 years now? And is being used in this way by multiple interoperating implementations)
I can leave this as a comment on the PR or the issue tracker, but my position is that "conversation tree" is entirely the wrong way to look at it, because a "conversation" and a "reply tree" are not the same thing. You can fork the conversation, you can reply to something in a different conversation, and you can have your post moved to a different conversation. I could define a property for it, but my intent was to gracefully degrade to using it for grouping
I don’t really have a horse in this race but we’ll probably never get rid of the existing use of context so I mostly question the advantage of us having to deal with three conversation grouping properties for the indefinite future

there was probably a time when `context` could've gotten renamed in the same way that `scope` was renamed to `audience`, but we're about 10 years too late on that discussion
@trwnh I will be the first to admit that I’m not a massive fan of the “context” property name but given it is baked into likely billions of posts at this point I mostly feel it’s the lesser of two evils. If this were an misuse of the property that was blocking some preferable use (e.g. Mastodon’s abuse of the “summary” property for CWs) then I would agree that it would be worth dealing with the pain, but in this case I feel pretty much any use of the property would be better off picking a more specific name so we may as well grandfather the use of “context” for “conversational context” (which is a valid use, per the definition)
Truthfully the Original Sin here is the inclusion of such vaguely defined terms in the original AS2 specification
@trwnh (I have converted these thoughts and a few more into an issue. It’s a bit strange to see discussion for a FEP moved to an issue tracker - for pretty much all of them historically a SocialHub thread has been made, and that has worked quite well)
it was offered as an option and I vastly prefer being able to resolve question by question rather than a long conversation thread that doesn't ever finish.
1. It defines a new property, `thread`, to identify the conversation thread of an object, instead of the `context` property, which can be used for other things besides threading. 2. It uses an existing type, `OrderedCollection`, for the thread, instead of creating a new type. 3. It defines a `root` property to quickly navigate from a thread collection to the root object. 4. The thread contains objects that point to each other using the `inReplyTo` property.

In principle it's finished, but last time we put it on lemmy.ml for testing there were performance problems and we had to revert. So far it's not clear what caused those problems, so we need to try again somehow.
Yep this has been a growing problem, with ppl using various alt accounts on different servers to downvote things. Usually it's pretty obvious because these accounts are all from the same servers, and have little or no comments or posts.
With that setting you can be sure that all the votes at least are coming from your local users, keeping vote anonymity, and without disconnecting from the bigger servers.
I actually want to suggest an extended feature where you can use an allowlist of servers allowing voting in your instance, creating in effect a affinity group of instances. I'll make a formal issue later
Cool, I originally thought about doing it that way, but maintaining allowlists and blocklists for all the different types of activities could get cumbersome (especially if we add things like blocking posts, comments, communities, messages, etc). But ya that's a good issue to have.
This tech could easily work with any type of camera too, that's a lot harder to identify than glasses with a light that turns on when its recording. Hidden cameras on pins, necklaces, clothing, etc.

It was great to get so much support and encouragement from everyone involved in making this launch happen. This is just the first step on a ten thousand kilometre journey, but we’re lucky to have such an encouraging and supportive team and community behind us.
I want to highlight some of the blog posts and social updates of support for the Social Web Foundation since our launch on 24 Sep 2024.

I helped launch the Social Web Foundation today and will serve as its first Research Director. I’m proud to be part of the group of supporters, advisors and founders who made this foundation possible; it is an honour to be among people who share my passion for ActivityPub and the Fediverse.
I want to say why I think it’s an important project.
Since its publication in 2018, ActivityPub has had support from different organizations. The W3C formalized the standard. Mastodon led implemention and defined the network. The EFF have advocated for the Fediverse. Until now, no major organization has taken on advocacy for AP as its central goal.
Many people have ideas about what the Fediverse needs to be bigger, safer, and easier to use. But the solutions they propose fall between the cracks of any one implementer or service. We want the SWF to be the entity that takes on those jobs.
Not everyone agrees that the Fediverse needs to be available to more people. That’s OK. And not everyone is going to be comfortable with the mix of commercial and Open Source implementers plus civil society groups that form the support for the SWF. That’s OK too. Hopefully, our work will still benefit you.
For me personally, the work will be straightforward. I’m going to continue doing the work I’ve done for the W3C and other ActivityPub projects: protocol refinement, documentation, meetings, speaking engagements, reports. But from here, I’ll be doing it with my SWF hat on.
I’ll also help develop the content like explainers, guides, and case studies for different targeted audiences. And I’ll do outreach through speaking at events, private meetings, or other personal engagement.
This work won’t replace my regular job at the Open Earth Foundation, which is important to me. I’ll just be taking on additional responsibilities with SWF.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us financially, with advice, or with feedback. And thanks to my family for their patience; with the book launch, the foundation, and my work at CoSocial, there’s a lot of talk about the Fediverse around our house every day.

Those who have followed my health update and original posts know that I was hit by a car while crossing the street in late June. It’s now been 12 weeks, and I want to give an update on the update.
Just a couple of months ago, I was in really serious pain, with 9 rib fractures, and even with opioid painkillers taken every couple of hours, every movement was excruciating. My left wrist was in a brace and I couldn’t write or type. My face was bruised and numb, with broken bones in my jaw, cheek and eye socket.
Today, I’m mostly better. It’s astounding how resilient my body is. I have a hard time with standing and sitting, but not with the kind of blinding pain that made me want to faint. I rarely wear my brace, and I’ve started running daily.
I’m seeing an occupational therapist, a psychotherapist, and an acupuncturist for better circulation and healing.
My broken wrist is still very stiff; I can barely bend it. The orthopaedic surgeon says that I may need another surgery at some point, but I am hopeful. I can type, write, and do most household tasks. It still can’t take a lot of weight; I need to push myself up with my other hand, for example. I am not yet back to the weightroom, which is a bummer, since it was an important form of bonding with my son before the accident.
I have a hard time remembering just how scary and all-encompassing my injuries were that first weekend. I felt like my pain was everything; all I was was a pain-haver. I kind of gave up at some point even imagining what it would be like to get back to normal.
I talked to my therapist about this; I’ve kind of realised that I’m never going to go back to how I was before the accident. I’m always going to have a body that had a really violent set of injuries, forever. But that doesn’t mean it has to be worse. She said, “How do you know it isn’t better?” I’m trying to hold onto that thought.
Legal and financial issues still loom, but they feel like they’re starting to resolve. I kind of realised a while ago that the reason people get pain and suffering payments from legal settlements isn’t to compensate them for the pain they had during the accident; it’s to compensate them for the pain and complications they’re going to have for the rest of their lives. It’s a way to pre-pay for chronic, recurrent medical issues.
I’m doing some household chores, gardening, and other light hand work. I’ve been trying to do extra stints of dishwashing to make up for all the chores I skipped, but I’m literally 3 months behind, and I’m probably never going to catch back up.
Thanks to everyone who’s had kind words about my accident; it’s meant a lot. I’m probably not going to make any further updates, except in that creaky way that people with pins in their bones complain about oncoming storms. No words of wisdom to share except please be careful crossing the street.

Four weeks ago today, I was hit by a truck while crossing the street in Healdsburg, CA.
I was hospitalized for a week in Santa Rosa with 9 rib fractures, a broken wrist and facial bone fractures. I learned how to walk, shower, dress and care for myself while in excruciating pain.
On release, I stayed with my generous and caring brothers and their families in the Bay Area, until doctors cleared me to fly.
I’ve been home in Montreal for almost two weeks. My wife and kids take great care of me.
My wrist is still in a brace and I can’t type well or hold anything in my left hand.
My ribs still hurt, but I’m able to get through most of my day. I’ve been gradually reducing my use of painkillers. Daily I’m taking about 25% of the dosage I took when I was released.
I’m seeing a physical therapist and a psychotherapist to work my way back to something like my normal life.
I also regularly visit a doctor and a dentist.
They say it takes at least 6 weeks to heal broken ribs. I’m hopeful.
In my life, I was overextended. I had my job at Open Earth Foundation, a grant from Summer of Protocols for adding E2EE to ActivityPub, and editing work for my book on ActivityPub for O’Reilly Media.
Everyone has been really accommodating that I had to take time off. I’ve been little by little taking on more responsibilities as I heal.
I am cooking simple meals one-handed at home. I walk 1-2 km per day for exercise, and I’ve eaten out at restaurants 3-4 times.
The next big challenge is dealing with insurance, hospital bills and lawyers as I sort out who pays for what. It is greatly complicated by the fact that I’m a Canadian who had an accident in California.
My wife has been taking good care of this part of the accident for a few weeks, but it’s becoming a bigger part of my life.
Anyway, tl;dr is that I’m getting better and better. Probably not as fast as I’d like, but steady progress. I’ve been incredibly lucky and I’m very grateful.
Thanks in particular to all the people here who’ve expressed well wishes and shared kind words. I haven’t replied directly to everyone, but please know that it meant a lot to me.

Konkret handelt es sich um Plugins/Dienste, die beim Erstellen von Texten helfen oder sogar komplett automatisiert Texte verfassen, um AI-generierte Bilder oder der Kombination aus beidem. Auf der anderen Seite stehen Dienste wie Google et al., die versuchen, Antworten auf Suchanfragen direkt aus den Suchergebnissen zu extrahieren, um dem Suchenden den Klick auf den entsprechenden Link zu „ersparen“.
Auch wenn ich das generelle Potential von KI durchaus sehe, sind das zwei Bereiche in denen mich deren Anwendung eher nervt!
Ich bin ein „Kind“ der Generation Web 2.0, ich schreibe meine Gedanken ins Web um mich mitzuteilen und mit anderen über meine Ideen und Einschätzungen zu diskutieren und (konstruktiv) zu streiten. Wenn ich was zu schreiben habe, schreibe ich etwas, wenn nicht, nicht.
Leider gibt es aber auch Menschen, die berufsbedingt schreiben müssen, ohne dabei die Freiheit zu haben, dies lediglich nach Lust, Zeit oder Inspiration zu tun. Dieser Druck verstärkt die Verlockung, auf KI-Unterstützung zurückzugreifen natürlich wesentlich.
Ein „wunderbares“ Beispiel hierfür ist die WordPress Community auf LinkedIN. Ein stetiger Stream an ähnlichen und meist inhaltslosen Posts mit einem überzeichneten, grellen, bunten Bild im Comic Stil, in dessen Mitte ein verunstaltetes WordPress Logo prangt!
Mein RSS-Reader ist zum Glück noch frei von solchen Inhalten, aber die Anzahl der KI generierten Bilder steigt auch hier auffällig konstant.
Das persönliche Bloggen hat eine lange und reiche Geschichte. Es ermöglicht Menschen, ihre Gedanken, Erfahrungen und Leidenschaften in einer einzigartigen Stimme zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Doch mit dem Aufkommen von KI-Technologien, die in der Lage sind, menschenähnliche Texte zu generieren, könnte das persönliche Bloggen bedroht sein. Die Versuchung, diese Aufgabe an Algorithmen abzugeben, ist real – aber sie könnte auch den Verlust von etwas Unersetzlichem bedeuten.
Per definition hat das nichts mehr mit „bloggen“ zu tun1, aber das ist Wortklauberei und das Problem ist wirklich real!
So real, dass Google aktuell schon damit zu kämpfen hat:

Auf Social Media hab ich ein sehr schönes Kommentar zu der Misere gelesen. Leider finde ich es nicht mehr und muss deshalb improvisieren. Hier eine sinngemäße Zusammenfassung: „Ein Ziel der industriellen Revolution war, unliebsame und stupide Prozesse zu optimieren um dadurch mehr Zeit für Kunst und Kultur zu schaffen. Und was macht AI, sie automatisiert uns genau diese Freiheit und nimmt uns ausgerechnet das Erstellen von Bildern und Texten ab.“
Die Aussage ist sicherlich etwas konstruiert, beschreibt aber genau meine Sorge: Optimiert euren Arbeitsalltag mit und durch AI, damit ihr mehr Zeit zum schreiben, bloggen und „malen“ habt, nicht umgekehrt!

I went to Vietnam a couple times. If you hang out downtown in the city, you might get a random Jehovah's Witness or Seventh Day Adventist* try to chat you up. "Oh, we can't do missionary work out in the open, so we just do one-on-one conversations like this". Despite the lack of "Jesus saves, die sinner" signs in Hanoi, you can definitely find Catholic and Protestant churches in Vietnam.
The Western press likes to piss and moan about settler nation missionaries that go, without proper visas mind you, to spread their Western versions of Christianity to the DPRK, only to get deported. So am I allowed to enter a white people country without a visa to stir up trouble and expect no consequences???
I'm the furthest thing from an expert on Myanmar. I get everything I know from Burmese friends. But if you look into the minority people situation, many of them are being heavily proselytised by the worst of the Amerikan type. I don't want the Pat Robertson's the world anywhere near struggling people.

La Corte d'appello, in particolare, ha respinto la tesi presentata dall'Internet Archive, secondo cui l'iniziativa per il prestito digitale di libri sarebbe protetta dal fair use, la dottrina che consente di violare il copyright in determinate circostanze. Il tribunale americano ha però definito "non convincente" l'argomentazione.
La causa contro l'Internet Archive
L'Internet Archive – un'organizzazione no profit con sede a San Francisco – aveva lanciato un programma chiamato National emergency library, nel marzo 2020, in un periodo in cui la chiusura delle biblioteche a causa della pandemia impediva a studenti, ricercatori e lettori di accedere a milioni di libri. L'ente aveva dichiarato che il progetto era nato in risposta alle richieste di normali cittadini e altri bibliotecari per aiutare chi era bloccato a casa senza la possibilità di reperire i testi di cui aveva bisogno.
Il Nel era scaturito da un altro progetto di prestiti digitali (tutt'ora in corso): Open library, in cui l'Internet Archive scansiona le copie fisiche dei libri nelle biblioteche permettendo a una persona alla volta di prendere in prestito una versione digitale. Il Nel invece consentiva a diversi utenti di accedere contemporaneamente a un libro scansionato.
Subito dopo il lancio, il Nel è finito al centro delle critiche di alcuni autori, che l'hanno paragonato a un sistema di pirateria. In risposta alla contestazioni, l'Internet Archive ha ripristinato i limiti di prestito nel giro di due mesi. Ma il danno era ormai fatto: nel giugno 2020 un gruppo di importanti case editrici, tra cui Hachette, HarperCollins, Penguin Random House e Wiley, hanno fatto causa alla no profit.
Nel marzo 2023 un tribunale distrettuale statunitense si è pronunciato a favore degli editori. Il giudice John G. Koeltl ha stabilito che l'Internet Archive aveva creato “opere derivate” e che non c'era "nulla di trasformativo" nelle sue copie e nei prestiti. Dopo la sentenza, le parti hanno negoziato i termini di un accordo, i cui dettagli non sono stati resi noti. Ma l'organizzazione ha comunque deciso di presentare ricorso.

L'Internet Archive è comunque riuscito a ottenere una vittoria marginale in appello. Pur confermando la sentenza iniziale, la Corte d'appello ha infatti chiarito di non considerare l'organizzazione un'entità commerciale, sottolineando la natura senza scopo di lucro delle sue attività, una decisione che trova d'accordo anche Grimmelmann.
Nell'articolo dedicato alle alternative a Spotify ho aggiunto questo front-end con una bella grafica e con alcune opzioni interessanti che si chiama Bloomee (alle volte scritto anche BloomeeTunes).
Un’altra alternativa per ascoltare musica presa da piattaforme come YouTube e Jio Saavn (una piattaforma indiana di streaming). Anche questa ha molte caratteristiche interessanti tra cui l’assenza di pubblicità e di traccianti, la possibilità di sincronizzare i testi, scaricare la musica per un ascolto offline, timer personalizzato e molto altro.
È prevista in futuro una versione per iOS e raccomandazioni personalizzate grazie all’IA. Esiste sia per Android che per desktop (Windows e Linux).

Nonviolence was a luxury Ghandi could afford during the revolution because Indians outnumbered British soldiers by something like 20k to 1. There was no world where the recently weakened UK (after WW2) could hold India once it decided to become independent.
The article I posted above gets into this, but it was not. The British did not quit india because some guy went on a hunger strike, and they actively propagate pacifist myths like his because they are completely unthreatening.

I'm not sure anymore where the Threadiverse is headed. (The Threadiverse being this threaded part of the Fediverse, i.e. Lemmy, MBin, PieFed, ...) In my time here, I've met a lot of nice people and had meaningful conversations and learned lots of things. At the same time, it's always been a mixed bag. We've always had quite some argumentative people here, trolls, ... I've seen people hate on and yell at each other, and do all kinds of destructive things. My issue with that is: Negative behavior is disproportionately affecting the atmosphere. And I'd argue we have nowhere enough nice behavior to even that out.
I don't see Lemmy grow for quite some time now. Seems it's now leveling off at a bit less that 50k monthly active users. And I don't see how that'd change. I'm missing some clear vision/idea of where we want to be headed. And I miss an atmosphere that makes people want to join or stay here, of all of t

I don't see Lemmy grow for quite some time now. Seems it's now leveling off at a bit less that 50k monthly active users. And I don't see how that'd change. I'm missing some clear vision/idea of where we want to be headed. And I miss an atmosphere that makes people want to join or stay here, of all of the places on the internet. The saying is: "If you don't go forwards you go backwards". I'm not sure if this applies... At least we're not shrinking anymore.
And I'm always unsure if the tone and atmosphere here changes subtly and gradually. I've always disagreed with a few dynamics here. But lately it feels like we're on the decline, at least to me. I occasionally keep an eye on the votes on my comments. And seems I'm getting fewer of them. Sometimes I reply to a post and not a single person interacts. Even OP seems to have abandoned their post moments after writing it. And also for nuanced and longer replies, I regularly don't get more than one or two upvotes. I think that used to be a bit better at some point. And I see the same thing happening with other peoples' comments. So it's not just me writing low-quality comments. What does work is stating simple truths. I regularly get some incoming votes with those. But my vision of this place isn't spreading simple truths, but have proper and meaningful discussions, learn things and new perspectives or just mingle with people or talk. But judging by the votes I observe, that isn't appreciated by the community here.
Another pet peeve of mine is the link aggregator aspect of Lemmy. I'd say at least 80% of Lemmy is about dumping some political (or tech) news articles. Lots of them don't generate any engagement. Lots of them are really low-effort. OP just dumps something somewhere, no body text added, no info about what's interesting about it. And people don't even read those articles. They just read the title and react (emotionally) to that. In the end probably neither OP nor the audience read the article and it's just littering the place. Burying and diminishing other, meaningful content. (With that said: There are also nice (news) discussions going on at the same time. And Lemmy is meant to be a link aggregator. It's just that my perception is: it's skewed towards low quality, low engagement and random noise.)
A few people here also don't really like political debate. And there's no escape from it here on Lemmy since so much revolves around that. And nowadays politics is about strong opinions, emotions and emotional reactions. And often limited to that. The dynamics of Lemmy reinforce the negative aspect of that, because the time when you're most incentivized to reply or react is, when it triggers some strong emotion in you, for example you strongly disagree with a comment and that makes you want to counter it and write your own opinion underneath. If you agree, you don't feel a strong emotion and you don't reply. And the majority of users seems to also forget to upvote in that case, as I lined out earlier. And we also don't write nuanced answers, dissect complex things and examine it from all angles. That's just effort and it's not as rewarding for the brain to do that as it is pointing out that someone is wrong. So it just fosters an atmosphere of being argumentative.
Prospect
I think we have several ways of steering the community: 1. Technology: Features in the software, design choices that foster good behavior. 2. Moderation: Give toxic people the boot, or delete content that drags down the place. Following: What remains is nice people and not adverse content. 3. The community
I'd say 1 and 2 go without saying. (Not that everything is perfect with those...) But it really boils down to 3: The community. This is a fairly participatory place. We are the ones shaping the tone and atmosphere. And it's our place. It's kind of our obligation to care for it if we want to see it go somewhere. Isn't it?
So what's your vision of this place? Do you have some idea on where you'd like it to go? Practical ideas on how to achieve it? Do you even agree with my perception of the dynamics here, and the implications and conclusions I came up with?
I don't have time to respond everything, but just about the growth part: Before the Reddit blackout happened, Lemmy was stuck with around 1000 monthly users for at least a year. It was quite boring compared to now, in 15 or 30 minutes you could read all new posts and comments for a day. It was also easy to recognize the handful of regular posters (cheers). At that time you could easily think the same, that Lemmy will never grow and people will leave. But then the Reddit migration happened and we got completely overwhelmed with a 70x increase in active users.
It seems to me that growth on the internet always happens with short spurts and long quiet periods. There will probably be a time when people come to Lemmy again and we reach hundreds of thousands or millions of active users. Then we will fondly remember the time when it was so small.
poVoq and anon6789 pointed out similar things with the growth happening in waves. I'm not sure if it's healthy, though. It puts additional strain on the platform, devs and mods and everyone. And there are (long) dry spells in between. I'd rather have it grow constantly and slowly. And I believe quite some other Free Software projects do. It's a bit of a different story with social media platforms as we have some unique circumstances like the network effect...
And I think the correct way to do it is to provide something to the people, so they want to join. Idk... be useful to them, a delight to spend time here. And offer something distinct or unique. That'd make the platform attractive all around the year. If we don't have a superior product, we just rely on the other platforms becoming worse and that's where our new users come from. Kind of accepting the role to be (and stay) an inferior Reddit clone. But that's not how I see Lemmy or the Fediverse. I want to attract people who've never used Reddit before. Tech enthusiasts, ... join because it's a great platform to discuss t

But not just because they're pushed out, but because they're positively motivated to join this place.
The software is one thing. I think we've come a long way and both Lemmy and the network feel pretty stable now. It's part of the equation. But I think the thing that really makes a difference is the community and the atmosphere. That's why people would want to join. I've started this discussion now, because i think after the Reddit exodus, things had to settle down for a bit. And as other people pointed out it seems we've reached a plateau now. I think that's a comfortable position to take a step back and think about the way forward. I'd like to take this as an opportunity to not just wait for incoming waves shape us, but now decide where we want to go and actively steer in that direction.
I think Lemmy is attractive enough, but that only matters when people actually want to join something new. Thats currently not the case, so for better or for worse we have to wait for another wave.
Reddit has been declining for years as well and basically just lives on momentum from earlier days when forums or forum-likes had their heyday.
Lemmy is trying to get a cut of a shrinking user base and is doing so by being a very close copy of Reddit. It's not exactly surprising that it only "grows" when there is a wave of people annoyed with Reddit for some reason.
Your suggestions are fine, but the internet as a whole is moving to semi-private communities and Lemmy is not going to stop that overall trend.
I am planning to implement private communities soon, hopefully it can help with that. Then maybe Lemmy can become an alternative for Discord and other platforms too.

I think we all know votes are broken. They just show the agreement level of the mob. Not necessarily connected with quality or if something is interesting to read. I think ultimately that's unfixable. But I'd like to invite you all to vote more. People who write posts or comments need to see it's worth typing it. There has to be some interaction or we're just wearing out people who contribute. And remember to vote on comments, too. Be generous.

I'd say don't do it too much since we already have RSS readers and news sites. But I'm willing to yield with my personal opinion. But(!) Please only post articles that you've read yourself. Votes
I think we all know votes are broken. They just show the agreement level of the mob. Not necessarily connected with quality or if something is interesting to read. I think ultimately that's unfixable. But I'd like to invite you all to vote more. People who write posts or comments need to see it's worth typing it. There has to be some interaction or we're just wearing out people who contribute. And remember to vote on comments, too. Be generous.

I'd say don't do it too much since we already have RSS readers and news sites. But I'm willing to yield with my personal opinion. But(!) Please only post articles that you've read yourself. If it's too boring for you to read, it's probably also too boring for the other people to read any you're just contributing to make this place be littered with random noise.

Connected to my previous point: Ask yourself: "Why am I posting this?" Is it because you want to discuss something? If yes: Put in a minimum of effort and contribute something yourself. At least write one or two sentences in your post and don't just dump a single link. IMO you should also write a short summary for your audience so they know if they want to click on the link. If you respect them and their time.
Reacting emotionally
We all do that. Just take a step back every now and then and see if your reactions are balanced in a way that you're comfortable with. Remember you can always down-vote someone and be done with it and not start an argument. But you don't need to keep silent. Especially if you're reading a text like this and making an effort, you're probably on the good side, so I don't want you to surrender this place to the people with less approvable behavior.
Be nice
I'd say everyone of us shapes this place by their behavior. If you want it to become a nice place, be nice yourself. We all know that's easier said than done, but we can make an effort.
Diversity
I think diversity is baked in to the Fediverse. We can have different instances with different focus, different moderation policies and a different tone of conversation. The technology isn't there yet to give everyone what they want, but I think we should embrace our diversity. And do something constructive with it. That's not easy. Some people like to have "free speech" and no moderation. Some like to have civil discussions without trolls and people who are constantly wrong, yet very aggressive and argumentative. Some are meme-lords or whatever and everyone is here for their individual reasons. I don't think we need to completely unite or agree on things. But we have to find a way to get along... Be liberal with other people who might be using this place differently. But don't tolerate unacceptable behavior.
Moderators and developers
You have quite some impact here. Use it wisely. Be fair, open-minded and make this a nice place for us.
Netiquette
People figured out in the 1990s, communicating over the internet is slightly different from communicating in the offline world. They wrote an unofficial code of policies that encourage good behavior on the Internet. Used to regulate respect and polite behavior online. It's called the Netiquette (If anyone has a better link, feel free to provide it to me.) It's a bit outdated so let me copy some guidelines and paraphrase:

Share something new
Your posts represent you - Be proud of them
Consider your audience
Be careful with humor, irony, and sarcasm!

This document provides a minimum set of guidelines for Network Etiquette (Netiquette) which organizations may take and adapt for their own use. This memo provides information for the Internet community.
I think something which would benefit the tone or 'culture' here would be to make it immediately and publicly clear that a negative interaction is unwelcome. Rather than get into a pointless debate with a troll, simply reply "This is a rude and/or low-effort comment which nobody wants here." It might not make much difference to the troll but for anyone else who reads it it creates and reinforces expectations about behaviour. The same thing goes for positive contributions; make sure to comment letting people know when you value their contribution.
I wouldn't mind if moderation was more heavyhanded too. If someone is rude and abusive, block them from posting on the community, regardless of the point they may be trying to make. In that respect I would like to see more moderators from the community
I'm sure technical things could be done to help too. Perhaps letting users switch off visibility for posts/comments that have received a certain proportion of downvotes for example.

I couldn't agree more strongly... I mean we kind of have that already. Everytime I see something that has a score of like -40 because of all of the downvotes, I think they got their just punishment and it's clear that no one likes what they wrote. I think it's superior to replying because it doesn't give that person any reply to start an argument. Just silence and downvotes. But however we decide to do it, i think we should be very open and upfront with what's expected behavior. And I'd like to see that happen more often.

PieFed has that feature. Comments with a score less than -10 (I think) just collapse. I think we need more of those features in Lemmy and the respective apps.
Being able to do this in Lemmy and configure it would be amazing. In Piefed's implementation does it leave 'orphaned' responses to the hidden comment visible or does it hide those as well?

The biggest problem with voting as content curation is that people vote to communicate very different ideas and reactions in different circumstances. So people are sending the same signal to a well-researched, respectful but dissident perspective and to content that is rude, violent, hateful, incorrect etc.
This could be solved by allowing more diverse reactions. People will always want an agree or disagree button, so give them that. But we could also vote on how factual a post is, how polite a post is, how uplifting a post is, etc. We could then build algorithms that prioritize quality content instead of just the current popularity contest. Ideally I’d like multiple transparent algorithms that the user can choose from (or leave a default chosen by their instance) so that users can choose what kind of content is most valuable to them.
One concern is whether this would be too complicated for people to understand or engage with properly. I’d be curious to hear what others think: would this just devolve into upvotes and downvotes again or could this be a better system?
Votes are needed to sort the posts and decide which ones are shown at the top of your frontpage. If we add different reaction types, it's not at all clear how each of them should affect the score. We might come up with some arbitrary numbers, but then the system will get a lot less intuitive and more complex.
Yes, the complexity is certainly one of the downsides to what I’m proposing, which is one reason why I was curious if people thought the complexity would be manageable. Sounds like you think not?
Just to clarify, my thought is to leave this up to users/admins to choose their own algorithm, which would transparently describe how things are weighted. For me, I would like to weigh factual information most highly, then kindness, with raw popularity at the bottom. But others might feel differently, especially if there were even more types of reactions than the three main categories I described.
For new users or those who don’t understand the system, it would be fine to have a default sort, maybe configurable by your instance. It could be as simple as just adding up the positive and negative votes, which would make it identical to the current system, or we could just guess at some different weights. Let me people try them out—not everyone will engage but I hope enough would to help iron out the wrinkles and see what works best.

But if you dig a little deeper, it’s even worse than that.
You see, once again, this is something that comes out of American fundamentalist cults. These items are talismans of their beliefs. Sure, they’re nasty sneers aimed at strangers they’ve chosen to degrade and hate, but they’re also talismans of their religious beliefs.
And there are two obvious meanings to this talisman. First is the statement, just below the surface, that if you can’t get pregnant by your weak Democrat – who naturally isn’t really actually a man since he’s not MAGA – then don’t worry, JD Vance is our God-Emperor’s apprentice. Therefore, he is a real man, and will be able to get you properly pregnant like you want to be, just like any Real Man could.
The second is uglier.
The second is a promise. A promise being made to women who don’t want children. And that promise is, we will make you pregnant like you should be, bitch.
I was going to write about JD Vance’s style of misogyny vs. Trump’s style of misogyny soon, but I guess I’ll talk about it here and now, because this is a manifestation of it.
Trump’s style of misogyny is the sort that doesn’t outright hate women, it just doesn’t think of women as adults. Women aren’t responsible, women in general can’t be trusted to make the right decisions in general, but occasionally, you get one that proves themselves, similarly to a bright child or trustworthy teenager. You can bring those on and grant them with responsibility, much like you might trust a properly-raised child. They just should never be in actual charge; a man must be the actual boss, because you need an actual adult – always a man – at the top.
Plus there’s the sex, of course. That’s important. And babies, also important. But when all is said and done, select women can be treated as mostly people too. Not quite full people, of course, but – mostly people.
JD Vance’s misogyny is much, much meaner. JD Vance’s misogyny – and the misogyny of his entire cult – deeply hates women. Deeply, as in, deeply resents our necessity for sex and childbirth deeply, as in, wishes we didn’t have to be here.
Given that, then if women must be around, it must be only for the purposes of reproduction and childcare, and okay, sex. Also, they should serve their superiors – men – since that’s useful and right too.
JD Vance has pretty much come out and said this, with his commentary about only families with children being real families and the only purpose of post-menopausal women being to raise kids.
And if you’re in a society that permits women not to have and raise children, then maybe you’re not in a righteous society at all. So they intend to fix that, by making damn well sure you have those kids and you raise those kids and that’s it, because that is, after all, your only valid purpose.
And so, this carrying around the talisman of Vance, this symbolic manhood of Vance, this statement that “it’s for Democrats” and a “full family kit?” It’s absolutely a promise. It is a symbolic promise to make unmarried and/or childless woman into literal Handmaiden’s Tale handmaidens.
They will make you fulfil your only valid purpose.
Most of them are probably not fully conscious this is what they’re promising. A lot of them are just in the cult, and the cult is doing this, so naturally, they are as well.
But some of them know.

What is Friendica
Friendica is a decentralised communications platform, you can use to host your own social media server that integrates with independent social networking platforms (like the Fediverse or Diaspora*) but also some commercial ones like Tumbler and BlueSky.
Ensure that the last backup of your Friendica installation was done recently.
Using Git
Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository, regardless of the branch (stable or develop) you are using. Remember to update the dependencies with composer as well. So, assuming that you are on the stable branch, the commands to update your installation to the 2024.03 release would be cd friendicagit pullbin/composer.phar install --no-devcd addongit pull If you want to use a different branch than the stable one, you need to fetch and checkout the branch before your perform the git pull.
Pulling in the dependencies with composer will show some deprecation warning, we will be working on that in the upcoming release.
As many files got deleted or moved around, please upload the unpacked files to a new directory on your server (say friendica_new) and copy over your existing configuration (config/local.config.php and config/addon.config.php) and .htaccess files. Afterwards rename your current Friendica directory (e.g. friendica) to friendica_old and friendica_new to friendica.
The files of the dependencies are included in the archive (make sure you are using the friendica-full-2024.03 archive), so you don’t have to worry about them.
Post Update Tasks
The database update should be applied automatically, but sometimes it gets stuck. If you encounter this, please initiate the DB update manually from the command line by running the script bin/console dbstructure update from the base of your Friendica installation. If the output contains any error message, please let us know using the channels mentioned below.
Please note, that some of the changes to the database structure will take some time to be applied, depending on the size of your Friendica database.

If you want to contribute to the project, you don’t need to have coding experience. There are a number of tasks listed in the issue tracker with the label “Junior Jobs” we think are good for new contributors. But you are by no means limited to these – if you find a solution to a problem (even a new one) please make a pull request at github or let us know in the development forum.
Contribution to Friendica is also not limited to coding. Any contribution to the documentation, the translation or advertisement materials is welcome or reporting a problem. You don’t need to deal with Git(Hub) or Transifex if you don’t like to. Just get in touch with us and we will get the materials to the appropriate places.

Here’s the problem, though: the biggest player in the space, Mastodon, does a poor job of supporting Article. Instead, every post Mastodon uses is instead a Note. From a semantic point of view, it might not seem like there’s a lot of difference between the two: both are effectively texts posts that can contain some formatting markup, both can hold an arbitrary amount of characters, and both can effectively be used to represent a full article.
Ironischerweise zeigt Mastodon eine föderierte Note vollständig an, auch wenn der Text weit über die eigentlich erlaubten 500 Zeichen hinaus geht, bei einem Article wird statt dessen aber nur die kurze summary benutzt.
Seine Idee: Ein Content-Fallback Mechanismus!

Das Prinzip ist ähnlich wie, wenn nicht sogar inspiriert durch, schema.org/Thing. Auch hier basieren alle Objekte letztendlich auf einem Thing und trotz der wesentlich größeren Anzahl1 an Objekten und Attributen, können Suchmaschinen sich immer sicher sein, dass es zumindest einen name, eine description und eine url zum Anzeigen gibt.
Bevor wir über also über ein `content-fallback` nachdenken, sollten wir (meiner Meinung nach) erst einmal dafür sorgen, dass die vorhanden Möglichkeiten richtig genutzt werden.

Due settimane fa o boh ho pensato che servirebbe un fork di Telegram Web che sistema alcuni problemi… il piccolo problema è appunto che non esiste (almeno, niente di mantenuto). Boh, ieri pomeriggio mi è risalito così un astio verso Durov, perché Telegram WebK continuava a resettarmi le impostazioni grafiche, e allora ho preso il codice e ho iniziato a manomettere… ecco a voi Spaccogram, insomma!!! ❤️🔥
Ho preso comunque il source di #WebK, perché WebA nonostante abbia più feature ha un problema decisamente grave, cioè che la sincronizzazione dei messaggi non solo è più lenta, ma a volte su mobile decide di non funzionare più… aspetti anche 5 minuti, e non ha finito di sincronizzare, ahi. Ho anche l’impressione che il JavaScript compilato sia più pesante in WebA, ma almeno per quanto mi ricordo il codice

Almeno, sotto una cosa fanno schifo entrambi: conservano il codice compilato nel branch di sviluppo di Git (e a leggere questo già tutti gli altri sviluppatori avranno storto lo sguardo). 🤭
Possibile che con tutti i soldi che si fottono col premium e le pubblicità, quelli di Telegram non possono pagare degli sviluppatori competenti per mantenere un #client #Web fatto bene? Perché al momento i due ufficiali sono tenuti malissimo, uno peggio dell’altro, da due scappati di casa che non hanno manco alcuna colpa, perché lo fanno nel loro tempo libero (e per questo non voglio smerdare loro, ma se il codice fa oggettivamente schifo va detto). E quindi, insomma, anche per questo, dopo aver cambiato alcuni default della app nel source, la mia attenzione è passata subito al forzare il client di credere che Telegram #Premium sia attivo. 😈 Avrei desiderato che magicamente sarebbero state sbloccate tutte le funzioni a pagamento, ma ovviamente sapevo già che il server fa i suoi controlli… PERÒOO… la traduzione dei messaggi in particolare funziona (bene così, perché un tempo era gratis, a dire il vero, come testimonia questa pagina di documentazione mal-tenuta), e persino quella live di tutti i messaggi (che non è mai stata gratis)! Userei con attenzione quest’ultima cosa eh, il ban è dietro l’angolo, anche se in teoria questo #fork è anti-ban (usa API id+secret ufficiali, che giustamente stavano belli dentro i sorgenti, quindi Telegram non può sapere che state usando un client umma umma), Telegram può comunque vedere se scrivete di continuo messaggi senza leggere i precedenti, e comunque non nasconde (ancora) lo stato online… quindi spegnetela quando dovete scrivere. 😳
Il client come vedete è già utilizzabile da tweb.octt.eu.org, ma ancora non ho aggiornato il 100% di stringhe e icone, ma sarà fatto… il nome della PWA installata è cambiato, quindi almeno non si confonde del tutto con quella ufficiale. Not legally. While each type of NSL allows the FBI to obtain a different type of information, that information is limited to records—such as “subscriber information and toll billing records information” from telephone companies.
You can read my article, or Drew Devaults on why he doesn't trust signal, which get more into this, but the short version is that US security forces don't have time to read the content of everyone's message anyway, they care more about the metadata: message timestamps and social graphs.
Signal stores all that data (via required phone numbers, meaning its linked to your real name and address), and via the US's key disclosure laws, it would be illegal for them to tell you that the US government is hoovering up that data.
Well IMO all countries should have the motivation to prevent US spying on their country's populations. You generally don't know about honey pots before they get exposed.
As I commented below, US security forces aren't that interested in message content anyway, since they don't have time to parse through every message to construct meaning. Signal does require your phone number tho, as well as message timestamps, meaning they can build social graphs of real people.
I wrote this, but I'd also like to add Drew Devault - Why I don't trust signal. There's a huge disconnect between what privacy advocates are saying about signal, and what reddit "privacy" communities think about it. If you read the article I linked, you'll see its because the Open Technology Fund (a US state-run entity), actively pushes signal in privacy spaces.
Seriously tho, that's been most of the defense of signal advocates, with zero backup other than signal's own claims. Signal is not self-hostable, and all the data lives on a centralized, US-domiciled server, subject to NSL requests (the US issues ~ 60 of them per day).
Unfortunately you can't verify what their server stores, nor the metadata that they are legally required to share with the US government (which includes phone numbers, and your name and address).
BTW if signal is secure, can you give us your phone number, so we can use it with you?
They must've added that recently then, but still doesn't get around the fact that they're required, which means signal (and likely the US government) knows exactly who you talk to and when.
Signal might be one of the most audited pieces of software in existence. Any criticism is likely either coming from or is supported by countries that fear encryption such as China, Russia and Iran.
The big downsides of Signal are that it requires a phone number and that is depends on Signals servers. That is it. You messages are completely safe as all messagers use the same underlying cryptography.
The audits mean nothing for a server domiciled in a Five-Eyes country. Signal has your phone number, and the other phone numbers you talk to (social connection graphs), and it is 100% illegal for them to tell you that they've been issued a national security letter divulging that information.

The main reason was that the habits app I liked above stopped development, and I read that atomic habits book by james clear, and realized that I could make an app that utilizes some of those ideas about forming habits.

Ich habe, um ehrlich zu sein, keine Ahnung, warum ich immer noch bei Twitter bin, und ich glaube, bei Facebook hat damals wesentlich weniger gereicht, um meinen Account zu löschen…
Klar, Twitter war über 17 Jahre lang das soziale Netzwerk meiner Wahl und hatte über lange Zeit hinweg wenig bis keine Konkurrenz! Ich habe viele spannende und inspirierende Menschen kennengelernt. Twitter hat mir geholfen, mich mit der deutschen Web2.0-Community zu vernetzen. Barcamps und Webmontage wurden über Twitter organisiert und diskutiert. Außerdem verdanke ich Twitter wohl auch meinen aktuellen Traum-Job bei Automattic!
Aber das alleine hat mich die letzten zwei Jahre nicht auf Twitter gehalten. Die Menschen, die mir wichtig sind (inklusive mir), sind weitergezogen und haben das Fediverse für sich entdeckt. Ein besseres Job-Angebot als das von Automattic ist aktuell eher unwahrscheinlich (😍) und wenn es hochkommt, schaue ich maximal alle zwei Wochen bei Twitter vorbei, und seit Monaten nutze ich schon keine Twitter-Apps mehr auf meinem Handy oder Computer.
Das was mich hält, kann also nur Nostalgie und die Romantisierung der „guten alten Zeit“ auf Twitter sein!?!
Nur fair, wenn ich jetzt auch umsetze, was ich da so von mir gebe!
Ich glaube, vielen geht es ähnlich wie mir: Sie sind unzufrieden mit Twitter, haben ihren Account aber aus Sentimentalität noch nicht gelöscht. Doch so wird sich langfristig nichts ändern. Der einzige wirkungsvolle Protest ist das konsequente Löschen all dieser inaktiven Profile. Das Netzwerk verdient durch uns und mit uns Geld, und nur wenn die Nutzerzahlen sinken, wird genügend Druck erzeugt! Aber selbst wenn nicht… das ist dann nicht mehr mein Problem ☺️

Since then there have been 1400+ changes made by 9 people, involving adding 88,000 lines of code and removing 28,000 lines. The issue queue has 98 open and 99 closed issues.
While join.piefed.social went live in October 2023, it wasn't until time off work over the christmas holidays enabled a big push to get it ready that piefed.social went live on 4th January 2024.
Since then piefed.social has federated 190k posts, 2.3M comments and 19M votes with 1900 other instances of various types. Besides piefed.social there are 5 other PieFed instances that I know of.
What a year it's been! I've grown significantly as a developer, had a lot of fun and hopefully contributed something meaningful to whatever the fediverse is becoming. Long may it continue!

I asked about it, and it should get fixed in the next build cycle, sometime this week hopefully. I've been waiting to "announce" my new app until this one gets fixed.
In the meantime, I also put all my apps on izzyondroid, which are updated to the latest versions.
Yes, but it's the app creators themselves who created those apks. Basically it swaps out trust for 3rd party packagers in for the open source app devs themselves.

Is this how it works: If the only relationship between A and B is that A follows B, then: - A is a fan and follower of B. - A and B are not considered connected. - There is a unilateral friendship between A and B.
If B also follows A, then: - A and B are considered connected. - There is a mutual/bilateral friendship between A and B.
When you receive a friendship notification from another Friendica member, you will have the option of allowing them as a "Follower" or as a "Friend". If they are a follower, they can see what you have to say, including private communications that you send to them, but not vice versa. As a friend, you can both communicate with each other.
How do you cause a “friendship notification” to be sent? What form does it take when it arrives? I've been experimenting with 2 accounts, but have not seen a friendship notification.
@Dirk Maas As far as I've ever seen its just A follows you. Following and friendship are the same thing. Though you can both follow and ignore someone too.
Hi Dirk. It depends on the account type and network. For example my Fendica account is setup to accept all friends requests as "followers". So I get no notification when someone adds me as a friend. But if you follow a Mastodon account, and yo are on Friendica, perhaps they get a notification.
In Friendica you can tweak these things a lot. Let me know if you have more questions.

No, she was not on any list – I knew she had an account, but that's all. I had tried to find her account, but could not.
Two unexpected things happened: (1) She became a follower of mine without any notification to me or input from me, and (2) I became a follower of her – again without any action taken on my part.

It depends what kind of account you have. Maybe you have it setup to accept all friends requests by default. Please check that. And by the way to add someone as a contact is even easier: use the top search bar and paste someone's profile (url or name). Enter. Now you can submit a friend request. WordPress Playground is this fascinating tool that allows you to run WordPress without a server. It achieves this by running PHP in your browser by using WASM. It sounds cool, and it makes for numerous interesting demos, as its original creator Adam Zieli
Having built Translate Live for WordPress.org–a way to translate plugins and themes without having to use a table UI–I have a bit of experience with having WordPress Playground do more complex things. But I also know that it be a bit difficult to get started with that.
Blueprints to start a Playground
So, as you can see with Translate Live, a WordPress Playground can be booted into configurations, and these configurations are (currently) called Blueprints. They are JSONs made of options and a list of steps. You can choose from a number of available steps like installPlugin to share a link with someone to try something in WordPress without having to set up hosting for that.
The available steps are somewhat basic but powerful. It can be abstract to think of what to do with them.
So, I had the idea that while the available steps of WordPress Playground are quite universal, we could build a library of “more meaningful” steps that do and “transpile” them to existing steps.
Build a Playground Blueprint with a Drag and Drop UI
Welcome to the WordPress Playground Step Library: Combining these steps with a click (or drag and drop) UI, it allows you do quickly create a WordPress Playground that does things you didn’t know you could easily do. Here is a screenshot: So, for example, it could be useful when you share a WordPress Playground link to add some explanatory text, and what better to use than the infamous1Admin Notice? But, how do you do it?
Turns out, you’d need a small mu-plugin. But with a custom step, it’s just a matter of adding that step: So such a “custom blueprint” for playground would be this: { "landingPage": "/", "steps": [ { "step": "showAdminNotice", "vars": { "text": "Welcome to WordPress Playground!" } } ]} But careful. The above doesn’t run in Playground. There is no showAdminNotice step. But the Step Library automaticaly transpiles to a valid blueprint: { "landingPage": "/wp-admin/", "login": true, "steps": [ { "step": "mkdir", "path": "wordpress/wp-content/mu-plugins" }, { "step": "writeFile", "path": "wordpress/wp-content/mu-plugins/0-mu.php", "data": "<?php add_action( 'admin_notices', function() { echo '<div class=\"notice notice-success is-dismissible\"><p>Welcome to WordPress Playground!</p></div>'; } ); ?>" } ]} So which one is easier to remember? You can try this blueprint in WordPress Playground now! It will look like this: I’ve made the Step Library so when you configure it, its URL reflects to your custom steps (this is the above in the Step Library) so that you can easily share them. If you wanted to share the actual running playground, share the URL of the “Launch in Playground” link.

This is traditionally misused by plugins to prompt you to upgrade so that your wp-admin screen can get bloated with this. To the point where there is an Admin Notices Manager plugin that allows you to keep them under control. ↩︎
It seems YT started another attempt at blocking alternative clients. They changed something in their API and both SmartTube and Tubular (NewPipe fork) are completely broken. Apparently it started happening this past week, but we personally just felt it today.
Since this morning I have not been able to play any videos in SmartTube. Instead I get an "Unknown source error Response code: 403" every time I click on a video on the Home screen. The Home screen...
I've been trying for a while now to integrate torrents properly into lemmy, just need more time for testing and demonstration. Torrents really are the only way forward for video content, youtube will just keep getting worse and worse.
That's an interesting concept. Thought how will it work for mobile users? Uploading there is often costly, both in the limited data plan and battery life.
Like most torrents currently... most seeders have lots of HD space and network bandwidth, and are happy to share to the occasional leech as long as the torrents stay alive.
Also there are some mobile clients like libretorrent that can be set to turn on only when plugged in.
Ok, but.. hmm. Do you have statistics on the share between desktop and mobile users? Maybe I'm wrong, but I think most browse lemmy from a phone. Most torrents work fine because most torrenters do that on a PC, but relatively very few on a phone. I'm honestly interested if you have some info on that.

After updating to 0.19.5 from 0.19.3 my postgres is often using up 500%+ of CPU according to docker stats and often going to 100% CPU on most cores according to htop. Also noticed in the uptime monitor:
htop shows one of the 5 postgres processes constantly on UPDATE. I think this might be part of the problem.
I'm not comfortable with postgres and am honestly completely in the dark how or where to mitigate or even pinpoint this issue.

`context` is fine for any kind of grouping of objects, as is noted in AV.

in reply to infinite love ⴳ • • •@trwnh I will be the first to admit that I’m not a massive fan of the “context” property name but given it is baked into likely billions of posts at this point I mostly feel it’s the lesser of two evils. If this were an misuse of the property that was blocking some preferable use (e.g. Mastodon’s abuse of the “summary” property for CWs) then I would agree that it would be worth dealing with the pain, but in this case I feel pretty much any use of the property would be better off picking a more specific name so we may as well grandfather the use of “context” for “conversational context” (which is a valid use, per the definition)
Truthfully the Original Sin here is the inclusion of such vaguely defined terms in the original AS2 specification

3. It defines a `root` property to quickly navigate from a thread collection to the root object.
4. The thread contains objects that point to each other using the `inReplyTo` property.
